    Hi Mr Huddison . I have absorbed a great deal from your tutorials which have helped me study the NXi.
    Just a couple of points I've noticed on viewing the video for the second time.
    The rotation speed for the 172 is 55 knots, and descending, 10° of flap can be set at 110 KIAS and the rest once in the white arc. Both these are as per the POH.
    Just a little point as I am a self-confessed pedant, is that runway designations are for example, 'two seven' and never 'twenty seven' as it refects the magnetic heading (to the nearest ten degrees.
    I'm sure you already know all this but a wannabe pilot might benefit from knowing it too.
    I look forward to each video as I strive to stop becoming rusty.
    Happy flying .

    Excellent series as you build through well thought out degrees of difficulty. I do want to compliment you on your camera work. The G1000 PFD and MFD screens were large, clear and bright - in other words playback is highly readable - well done. Thank you for the professionalism you bring to,your videos. Thanks for another super helpful video Huddison! One point about FLC however, you wouldn’t normally setup FLC on the ground. When you hit the FLC button the speed will be taken from the aircrafts current airspeed (which is why your FLC started at zero). Once the air / on the initial climb you can simply hit the FLC and the autopilot will automatically apply your aircrafts current airspeed and continue the climb at this speed to the altitude set using trim. During the climb you can refine the set speed if you wish using the up/down buttons, but typically you would continue to control the climb rate using throttle in much the same way as in manual flight.
    I know it sounds backwards but basically throttle controls your climb / descent rate and trim is used to set your speed.

      Thanks, that makes a lot of sense and is a wonderful addition to the video.

    Thank you so very much, I have been wasting hours with the G1000 ILS functions. As you indicated, I had a number of failed attempts in Northern California. Really great video for newbies to ILS like me, easy to follow and understand. After this one I changed planes to the Daher 930 from Gatwick to Bournemouth and using the touchscreen PFD and 'Proc' and the principles were the same and somehow it got me there. Your other videos are really helpful too, nice work! I like that you use PC and Xbox Series S too, showing that this can be available to all. Something to probably pay attention on if you're adding an ILS approach inside the aircraft rather than on the world map. When you've selected your transition check to see if there's a frequency showing, if there's no frequency showing it won't work. That's what I've found anyway.

    • @Huddison
      @Huddison  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent addition 👍

  • @TWOKDOK1
    @TWOKDOK1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have been practicing ad hoc ILS approaches at H International (no ILS approach entered in FP) and have found that as long as the locator has been firmly captured with the green line CDI in the centre and you fly at a constant height (assuming within ATC mandates / as on the ILS chart)you can ‘arm’ approach mode and it will capture the glideslope automatically; you don’t have to wait until the green diamond reaches the yellow altitude line. This reduces the mental load in keeping a beady eye on where the diamond is. I also noticed that, because the glideslope at H Int. is 5 degrees, it is very difficult to decend fast enough in the Cessna 172 because even with the throttle fully closed you will still have difficulty in slowing sufficiently to engage flaps so you are likel to well overshoot the numbers and land long but you could still use it to land safely in almost zero vis. (Subject to minimums of course).

    • @Huddison
      @Huddison  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed, you can activate APR as soon as you're locked onto the Glide path/slope.
      Interesting re H Int, I'll have to give that a try.

I've taken the tutorials' but there are big gaps on what to do next like how to start a new flight in the world map or how to properly land. I find landing the hardest part. @@Huddison yes very odd. I repeated, went and installed all remaining updates and still the same. The main difference I see is from the video is that after selecting ILS 27 L the BIG approach is already highlighted. I then scroll down to load and all of the indicated altitudes have a series of dashes although the heading and distance to each point are shown. Also, including EGKN as a waypoint sees a really odd route for me, quite different to the video where it flies North from LGW, then South South East almost as far back down as EGKK before heading North again to EFKB.
      I wonder if I’m on a different patching cycle potentially.

    • @Huddison

  • @TormodSteinsholt
    @TormodSteinsholt 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think you were confused at the 22:45 mark. You increase your rate of climb by increasing throttle. In FLC mode, you are using your throttle to control rate of climb. If you increase throttle, the plane will nose up in order to maintain 74 knots. You also could've used this opportunity to explain Vx, which AFAICT is the speed you were looking for. Vy give you fastest climb, but Vx give you most climb over the least distance travelled.

    My experience two years after this video is that pressing VNAV makes the aircraft automatically descend at the optimal rate, i.e the rate designated by the magenta “V” bug. I noticed that in this video the vertical speed is set discretely at 1,000 fpm, which would be set automatically by VNAV. I know that you covered VNAV in subsequent excellent videos. I’m just wondering if VNAV was not fully developed at the time this video was made, or if there is something I’m missing that caused you to use VS on the descent.

    • @Huddison

      I was still fully getting to grips and experimenting (somewhat) with VNAV, when I made this particular video.

    Greeting sir. Thanks for this video. I did learn some things unknown previously.
    Question: I did not see you ever activate the approach using the PROC menu on the MFD. Did I miss that or did you not perform that task? It seemed that your aircraft performed for ILS as expected even if you did not activate the approach when coming to the IAF. I did see you arm the autopilot to APP mode to capture the GS. However, I was under the impression you had to Activate the Approach at the beginning of that phase of the flight.
    Also, is there a reason you did not use the VNAV on the autopilot instead on manually descending the plane with the VS mode?
    Thanks. Inquiring minds (such as mine) want to know. 😃

    • @Huddison
      @Huddison  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings. You are correct, I didn't activate the approach on the MFD - the G1000 NXI is still incomplete in some aspects & as my example in this video shows, it didn't seem to matter if I activated it or not. Typically, one would have to; although it can make the NXI mode 'bug out' in certain situations.
      In regards to using VS, I tend to do whatever I feel is quickest\easiest to climb or descend or climb at particular points in a flight. You do whatever comes more naturally to you ;)

    • @Topcat1952
      @Topcat1952 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Huddison Thanks a lot. Since I wrote my comment, I learned that it is not necessary to select "activate approach" if the next waypoint you are flying to is part of the approach. You only use it if you want to skip waypoint(s) that are in the flight plan before you get to the approach and go direct to the first waypoint (i.e. IAF) of the approach.
      You approach worked as you were already headed to the IAF.

    Good day sir. I was following these instructions but have hit a snag early on. I select the departure and arrival runways as shown, but when I see you do so, it automatically plots waypoints for you, but when I select the arrival runway, it just plots a straight line from the end of take off runway to the start of the landing runway. I was hoping you could give me some advice on this please? I had the same issue when trying to copy your first auto pilot video over Paris.

    I have been using the Flight Simulator for the past 6 months and have been trying to learn Autopilot. I have found your videos very useful. However, when using the ILS approach just before I come in to land and coming off autopilot my throttle accelerates rather than decreases my speed. Is this a bug in MSFS?

    • @Huddison
      @Huddison  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends where you have your own physical throttle set to on your controller (and the aircraft you are piloting), when you come off Autopilot. Try to match it to what you see in the aircraft.

    Huddison, love your videos. I’ve watched this particular video at least a dozen times. Duplicated this flight on my Xbox/s countless times. I can’t get the plane to descend. I pickup the localizer, and the glide slope. The glide slope diamond comes down and keeps going down as I fly over the airport. Often times the localizer goes goofy also.
    I notice when I press approach, the nav goes off. Is this correct? Any idea what I could be doing wrong? I can land manually by following the localizer and glide slope but the plane will not approach without my input.

    I find it surprising that the autopilot would allow the aircraft to approach stall speed without some sort of intervention / warning?

      I guess it depends which aircraft you are flying; but the C-172 has manual throttle.

    • @TWOKDOK1
      @TWOKDOK1 ปีที่แล้ว

      By manual, I presume you mean it cannot be controlled by the autopilot. Somewhat surprising considering it’s cruciality to staying airborne and the ease with which automation can be implemented; after all, even my car has auto electronic speed control via the ‘throttle’). Also surprising that the Garmin doesn’t ‘baulk’ at any dangerously low speed implicit in its solution e.g. audio warning “increase throttle!” ?
