FYI a colourless blender is a great tool, if you know how to use it. You need to layer down the colourless blender first, then go over the top with the colours. It just simply helps blend the two colours together with out the consistent layering.
You will not believe how many times I have tried to blend with a colourless blender and failed. That name is deceiving! Thanks for clearing the purpose of that colourless "blender" up for me!! I shall make no mistake with it anymore!
... With the colourless blender, you put that down first then do the other colour/s on top of it. The clear alcohol ink makes it easier for the colour to spread into each other
Technically you can use it to blend into white if you want the effect of a shine without harsh line. Another technique is the "tip-to-tip" method where you can place the tip of a colored Copic to the tip of a Colorless blender to create a lighter shade. The third method I've seen people do with the colorless blender and actually use that one first, pretty much wetting the area with colorless ink to let you lay down a smooth layer of color, and it does make it easier to blend on top of it since it's better to blend wet-on-wet ink. So yes you can use it to blend, just not in a way that seems well...obvious to use. I didn't know about the third way until about 3 years ago when I saw somebody do that at a worshop.
Thank you for your kind words :) If you like to see this blender technique in a more in-depth way, you can watch this video I made some time ago : th-cam.com/video/qoSDhCC1Fo8/w-d-xo.html :)
funny turtle I've had mine for some time and didn't know how to use it, so i kept ruining it by mistake (trying to figure out how to use it) i didn't know what it was called to look it up
This video was extremely helpful. I’m getting Ohuhu markers VERY soon, and I’ve had very little experience with alcohol markers. I’ve watched tips and tricks videos and seen the strats other pro artists use, but this video was the cherry on top!
You're so funny and you'r accent is so adorable, but what I love the most is that you guessed the exact mistakes we make when working with markers, even the justifications we use.
Just a little thought. Use something other than marker paper. Marker paper is too thin. That's why you're getting that Feathering. It's not that you're using too much ink, it's your paper. Good video though.
Thanks, I will try that! Honestly I still like my marker paper, mostly because I don't waste too much ink and I can easily blend the colors. I tried them out in my mixed media sketchbook and in this one the colors are all looking slightly different. I didn't expect that ^^" But you're right, marker paper is super thin.
If you know its going to get saturated you can try Poster/cardstock. Its a bit heavier but cheaper then copic paper. Still has the slight bleed but it can take a lot more abuse. I buy the art tiles of card stock too they hold up against markers and water colors great but they are smaller. Good for doodles to sell or practice.
Junifarben Illustration Have you tried Hammermill Color Copy Digital (100lb) paper? It's on Amazon, and for the price (around 15-20 USD) you get 250 papers. I find it excellent for Copics, and there are plenty of people who use it in place of Copic Xpress it paper.
I know I’m a bit late to see this video, but I’m glad I’ve seen it. A while ago I was going to buy a few copics to start getting better tools to color, so I decided to do research and this video helped a lot. Just leaving my support for this video!
I know this video is old but you can actually blend with the colourless blender! You just can't really blend two colours or a dark colour. The blender works best as... Well a blender when you are trying to blend a light colour out into the paper. Mid to dark colours don't blend as well. Other good uses for the blender is correcting small colouring mistakes and creating cool textures and effects.
Actually, you are using the wrong paper. That’s why yours bleeds and looks patchy. The “marker paper” is actually really bad. Your gonna want to use something thicker like Bristol board, cardstock, if mixed media paper
To be fair, thicker paper makes the markers bleed as well. I find Marker Paper to make them bleed the least, but I don't like the way it looks for some reason.. Thing is, when you use really thick paper you actually waste more ink, due to the paper sucking up more :/
It dont really suck up too mutch ink, I have 6 years of experience with copics and watercolour paper XD I had the same markers for 6 years and only a few ( 5 of over 100 markers are now dry) of the ones I used the most went dry! :D I did alot of full coloured A3 and A4 drawings too :) I think it comes down to preference though! But i wouldent recomand marker paper, it is over priced ( at least in my land! i can buy a 500 pages watercolour A3 block for 20 dollar, but marker paper with 100 thin pages cost 40- 50 dollar) And you can only blend and lay on colours to a certain point before you draw a hole in the marker paper ^^; And i get nervous since the paper is so thin! thick paper is more durable in the end :) But thats my preferance XD
My birthday is in a few days and my mom got me pretty expensive alcohol-based markers, and I've been researching a lot about them and how to use them because I don't want to ruin them haha. This video definitely showed me things that I did not know before about alcohol markers. Thanks a lot!
A cool blending trick ive picked up that works well for me is putting down the base color, adding the shade color then going back with the base color to blend it in. Works like a charm
All of this is SO helpful. They're things you don't really think about. The only markers I've ever used are Sharpies, and these tips can apply to them, as well (to a certain degree)...at least, I found it out the hard way. If I ever give alcohol markers a go, I'll have to come back to this vid! Thanks for sharing.
I love this video so much! I just got ohuhu alcohol markers for my daughter learn with and since I don't know how to use markers either we've both been confused about how online artists make magical marker art but nothing we tried worked! OMG you covered ALL OUR MISTAKES!!!!!! Also, this video is Really entertaining. Thanks for making it!
i know this video is like 5 yrs old but it was really helpful , i just got some markers which were a bit cheaper to try out how i liked them , without looking anything up i started coloring and kinda ruined my picture and then i was upset because i spent maybe about 2 hours or 3 of coloring and then ruined it all with one mistake so now ill go get some better paper and try to do it right this time well when its daytime anyway.
Thank you for informing me about the colorless blender. I did try to use it to blend colors and that wouldn't happen, it's a very mismatch name, I'll take your advice about it. thanks!
I have definitely made some of those mistakes along the way.. Thank you for the tips :) I had my micron fine liner smudge sometimes.. but I'll take your advise on letting it dry longer
I find the colourless blender most useful when the ink is still wet. It works best for softening the harsher lines between blended colours. But you need to do most of the actual blending work with the layered colours rather than relying on the blender. Just experiment with different techniques and find what works best for you :)
Thank you! I got some alcohol markers for chrismas after mentioning that I want to try them isntead of my waterbased brushes but I had all of these problems, I came across this video by chance and it was really helpful. Also your drawings are great!
I laughed hard more than a couple of times with this video. They're all true! I'm a beginner so I can relate very much. 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for sharing these tips!
You can make really cool effects with the colourless blender by tapping on the ink with it, laovaan has a really cool video about that on his channel (without wanting to put your content down, I just think its really cool how he coloured the hair almost rainbow like with that technique) And for markers and blending I'd really recommend the rendr sketchbook, it might seem a bit more expensive than the copic sketchbooks or other marker paper etc. but it's really the best paper for marker, especially when blending, it doesn't bleed through at all and shouldn't use too much ink either because it's not heavyweight (a lot of people complain about their paper either bleeding through too easily or soaking up too much ink)
God thank you so much I haven’t been figuring out why my lines were streaky and basically gave up on markers but this video give me a lot of hope thank you so much!
The dollar store actually has a perfect lining pen. I've used them for years. As long as you let them dry there perfect. For anyone who is interested they are called, "R2 roller" by the INC brand.
Im so glad I found this video ! ❤️ I’m new to using alcohol based markers. I didn’t know there’s specific paper for them. I’m stopping by the store tomorrow!
Very convenient this popped up in my recommended, I just got my first set of markers for christmas! Been having a tiny bit of trouble, but i'll keep these tips in mind, thanks!
This may sound a bit cruel, but I think you're not using a proper paper for your markers. The colors seem a bit off and random tiny darker blops of ink are located in the colored area. Marker paper and Copic Marker paper (especially made for copics) usually don't work out for most people. Maybe you should experiment with different papers?(try (kinda) cheap ones too)( I'm working with sketch book paper that isn't really expensive at all and works super well with the copics and fineliners I use) But of course,if you are satisfied with the paper it's completely fine. Everyone to their own,by all means. Though I think the paper kind of "takes away the quality" of colors and the artwork. Overall,it's a very informative video. Good job ^^
yea thats what i thought too. i like using mix media because the paper is thicker and i can layer more without making those weird splotches that happen with marker paper.
I prefer using watercolour paper ( 200 g thic ) :) Then i can blend as much as i like and i can use watercolour, paint etc :) And id dont suck up too mutch ink, i have 6 years of experience with copics and watercolour paper XD I had the same markers for 6 years and only a few of the ones i used the most went dry! :D I did alot of full coloured A3 and A4 drawings too :) I always buy sketch book paper that is from 200 - 160 g thic since it is perfect for testing colours, blending and colouring small sketches :)
Ina V T I use a German brand and it works incredibly well with everything except watercolors ofc...I don't work with watercolord too much though and found out that Gouache works super well for me!
another good tip- don’t let random people at school use your expensive markers. i brought my markers into school first time i ever got them in 7th grade bc i was so proud of them (i’m now a freshman in high school) but this random kid asked to use them and i knew they were high quality but i let him anyway and THIS LITTLE SHIT uses the brush side of my copic and starts jABBING HIS PAPER to make fucking POKA DOTS. i snatched that out of his hand so fast oh my god people who don’t know how to take care of supplies annoy me so much to the point if i bring in my prismacolour coloured pencils in i wont even let them use those bc i’m not letting them end up snapped in half like every other wooden pencil in a school.
Wow, that's a crazy story :D It's heartbreaking even just to read that super expensive stuff was used to do some doodles 😱 If I was in that situation, I would have died XD
Thank you for the tips including the people giving more tips in the comments I’m getting a alcohol markers because I wanted to try something new with my art, so thank you 😊
oh i love this, i mean i learned soooo much but had so much fun doing it! Love your voice as well as your cute drawings. Im hooked and maybe ill even treat my markers better
The blender is supposed to be used before you put colors i think???? Im guessing, and saw someone successfully blend by using it first so thats probably what you need to do. But I was confused about it literally until only a hour ago /after watching the video and seeing her do it/
Why not make another video with the same idea but with content for more experienced artists? I've been using markers for a few months now and I managed to blend and avoid smearing black now but I just can't seem to prefect my art like I want I have no problem with drawing but with coloring
Thank you for your suggestion, that's a very good idea :) I will try to come up with some helpful tips the next time, to prepare a new video ^^ But it won't go up until next year, because I pre-recorded stuff for December🙃
Adrian Crevan th-cam.com/video/ZnC1onMmpZo/w-d-xo.html I did this with markers You can see it and tell me yourself if I have anything I should correct. I'd really like to have some advice I feel like I still don't know everything I should know about markers....
This was so funny and the best! You are definitely right on with the reaction I get at each of those problems. Hopefully I can figure it out before I have to check myself into the loony bin.
Someone who used to be in my school used comic markers like feltip pens, writing pen and basically everything you would use crayons and to top it all of they didn't even draw witg them.what a huge waste of money.
Thanks, I am glad that the video was helpful for you :) I uploaded the video in English and the title is also in English. But some of my subscribers translated the video, that's why TH-cam shows you the title now in Czech (I guess it depends which language you have chosen on TH-cam). There should be also subtitles available. I also see the German titles of some videos which are in English, because in my TH-cam settings I chose "German" as my language. So I see the titles of the videos of eg. Pewdiepie in German, because there are German subtitles for this video.
I've been doing digital art for a really long time, and I decided that I wanted to start using my copics again. This was really helpful to me, because I forgot what alcohol based Markers do when you color with them. :)
I wish I saw this video earlier because I got a colorless blender thinking it would help blend but no but now I know other ways to use it thanks for the tips

I have a plush of your profile picture. It’s bananya if you didn’t know.

Thank you I'm getting alcohol based markers and this really helps me understand the dos and donts.
This must have been the most accurate and gorgeous video I've seen for a long time. I found my younger self in every second of this.
"alcoholic marker artists"
great title
Melody Qin oop
Melody Qin yes.
People who are alcoholic and are marker artists, this is for you!

I'm a markerholic🤭🤭🤭
I don't apologize for the pun😌😌
... With the colourless blender, you put that down first then do the other colour/s on top of it. The clear alcohol ink makes it easier for the colour to spread into each other
That's a great tip, thank you! I will try that out later :)
NeoPiko call their "colorless blender" the "Solvent" which I think is better because solvents usually correlate with removers of sorts.
Why in the hell do they even call it that
Technically you can use it to blend into white if you want the effect of a shine without harsh line.
Your sense of humor is fantastic! thank you for the wonderful and educational video :D
The blender, an artists greatest enemy
So true :D
I honestly had no idea how to use the blender, this video is a blessing
Thank you so much for the video I just got a colorless blender yesterday now I see what I can use it for now
Thank you for your kind words :) If you like to see this blender technique in a more in-depth way, you can watch this video I made some time ago : th-cam.com/video/qoSDhCC1Fo8/w-d-xo.html :)
funny turtle I've had mine for some time and didn't know how to use it, so i kept ruining it by mistake (trying to figure out how to use it) i didn't know what it was called to look it up
the colourless blender 3:34 is my fav part

This video was extremely helpful. I’m getting Ohuhu markers VERY soon, and I’ve had very little experience with alcohol markers. I’ve watched tips and tricks videos and seen the strats other pro artists use, but this video was the cherry on top!
MY NEW FAVORITE CHANNEL
Thank you so much for this huge compliment :))!!
You're so funny and you'r accent is so adorable, but what I love the most is that you guessed the exact mistakes we make when working with markers, even the justifications we use.
Thanks a lot :D I just tried to remember all the difficulties I had when I started with alcohol markers, it seems that it worked ;D
AHAHAAHA YOUR VOICE IS SOOOO CUTEE
;D
Just a little thought. Use something other than marker paper. Marker paper is too thin. That's why you're getting that Feathering. It's not that you're using too much ink, it's your paper. Good video though.
Thanks, I will try that! Honestly I still like my marker paper, mostly because I don't waste too much ink and I can easily blend the colors. I tried them out in my mixed media sketchbook and in this one the colors are all looking slightly different. I didn't expect that ^^" But you're right, marker paper is super thin.
I use straight up drawing paper with a paper to catch extra ink or mix media paper. It usually works out well enough for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Mix media paper is good but I find it a little too absorbent. I use 110lb cardstock which I find works the best
Thank you for this Video! I recently got Markers and I’m still trying to get used to them. This Video really helped me a lot
Keep up the good work
Thanks a lot :) I hope you enjoy your markers so far ^^!
Aww wait, why is this the cutest video? I love your style!
i'm like 50% sure you're german. wenn ja, hi! :D

Just ordered my first alcohol markers, and then I found your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :D Great help!
Thank you, I am glad that the video was helpful for you! And enjoy using your new markers :)
Thank you so much I just got my first pack of achole based markers not knowing much about them! This helps so much thank you! ❤️
I know I’m a bit late to see this video, but I’m glad I’ve seen it. A while ago I was going to buy a few copics to start getting better tools to color, so I decided to do research and this video helped a lot. Just leaving my support for this video!
Thanks a lot for your support :) I hope you are enjoying your new Copics so far! ^^

1 more thing, never lend your markers to anyone who isn't an actual artist. They will press down so hard and ruin it. Rest in peace my marker babies
Thing is, when you use really thick paper you actually waste more ink, due to the paper sucking up more :/
Dana H
I use sketch paper, lmao. It's kind of in between. Not too thin, not too thick. The ink lasts forever and the markers don't bleed a lot
But i wouldent recomand marker paper, it is over priced ( at least in my land! i can buy a 500 pages watercolour A3 block for 20 dollar, but marker paper with 100 thin pages cost 40- 50 dollar) And you can only blend and lay on colours to a certain point before you draw a hole in the marker paper ^^; And i get nervous since the paper is so thin! thick paper is more durable in the end :) But thats my preferance XD
nahgem, I've found that Bristol works best for me.
The best would be X press it Blending Card
My birthday is in a few days and my mom got me pretty expensive alcohol-based markers, and I've been researching a lot about them and how to use them because I don't want to ruin them haha. This video definitely showed me things that I did not know before about alcohol markers. Thanks a lot!
A cool blending trick ive picked up that works well for me is putting down the base color, adding the shade color then going back with the base color to blend it in. Works like a charm
Haha, I always use the blender marker to color by touching another marker to it. I always thought it wasn't a legitimate technique until now.
Best name for the colorless blender! 😂😂😂
;D
I have touch markers and these really help a lot!
I am glad that the video was helpful for you :)
This is the best alcohol marker tips video I have found so far!
Yasssss, I am getting Copic markers for X-mas! So happy I watched this
That will be an amazing Christmas for you this year ;D
Awww thank you!
Me too!!
Superioli 7 cool! That would probably be a wonderful X-mas for you :P
When I saw the blender maker one I was like

Hahahaha I went throught ALL those mistakes in the beginning, damn blender, damn paper! But then I learnt from my mistakes. ^^
Thanks for making it!
i know this video is like 5 yrs old but it was really helpful , i just got some markers which were a bit cheaper to try out how i liked them , without looking anything up i started coloring and kinda ruined my picture and then i was upset because i spent maybe about 2 hours or 3 of coloring and then ruined it all with one mistake
so now ill go get some better paper and try to do it right this time well when its daytime anyway.
Most adorable marker video ever!
Aww, thank you so much for your sweet words :)
Thank you for your comment :) Hopefully your micron won't smudge again in the future ;D
Junifarben Illustration you're welcome. Hopefully it doesnt .. next step I need to learn blending with copics and re-filling them..
I was really nervoues before I refilled my first marker, but it was super easy 8-) So don't worry ;D
Your voice and accent is so cute
I laughed hard more than a couple of times with this video. They're all true! I'm a beginner so I can relate very much. 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for sharing these tips!
Your accent is sooo adorable. Omg. And your video helped. 😶😶
Thanks a lot! I am glad that the video was helpful :)
You can make really cool effects with the colourless blender by tapping on the ink with it, laovaan has a really cool video about that on his channel (without wanting to put your content down, I just think its really cool how he coloured the hair almost rainbow like with that technique)
And for markers and blending I'd really recommend the rendr sketchbook, it might seem a bit more expensive than the copic sketchbooks or other marker paper etc. but it's really the best paper for marker, especially when blending, it doesn't bleed through at all and shouldn't use too much ink either because it's not heavyweight (a lot of people complain about their paper either bleeding through too easily or soaking up too much ink)
I have a 'How to draw' playlist, and I put your video there. So yeah, that means great job for your awesome explenation! :3
Uuuh, thank you for putting my video to your playlist :) And I am glad that the video is helpful for you! ^^
I learned the blender is good for lightening shades when they are to dark
Maybe you should experiment with different papers?(try (kinda) cheap ones too)( I'm working with sketch book paper that isn't really expensive at all and works super well with the copics and fineliners I use)
But of course,if you are satisfied with the paper it's completely fine.
Ina V T
I use a German brand and it works incredibly well with everything except watercolors ofc...I don't work with watercolord too much though and found out that Gouache works super well for me!
Thats great :) Watercolours can make some really pretty backgrounds :) Its good to find something that works for you :D
Ina V T Gouache is the same as watercolors when you use more water
another good tip- don’t let random people at school use your expensive markers. i brought my markers into school first time i ever got them in 7th grade bc i was so proud of them (i’m now a freshman in high school) but this random kid asked to use them and i knew they were high quality but i let him anyway and THIS LITTLE SHIT uses the brush side of my copic and starts jABBING HIS PAPER to make fucking POKA DOTS. i snatched that out of his hand so fast oh my god people who don’t know how to take care of supplies annoy me so much to the point if i bring in my prismacolour coloured pencils in i wont even let them use those bc i’m not letting them end up snapped in half like every other wooden pencil in a school.
Wow, that's a crazy story :D It's heartbreaking even just to read that super expensive stuff was used to do some doodles 😱 If I was in that situation, I would have died XD
That's why I don't even let people come near my pencil case. XD
I let some kid use one of my prisma colors and he pressed down super hard and when I tried sharpening it later on it was all weird and messed up
That's exactly why I always leave the good quality supplies home
Ok, I loved this! I was always wondering what was wrong with my blender, now I know lol
Thank you for your kind words :)
your welcome! and thank YOU for answering my questions :)
Thank you for the tips including the people giving more tips in the comments I’m getting a alcohol markers because I wanted to try something new with my art, so thank you 😊
Thank you so much! I just bought new pens today, and this is really going to help!
I JUST like 15 minutes ago bout a blender to "blend my colors" and now I am learning that that isn't even what it does💀
you are so cute i legitimately almost cried
what is wrong with me lol
I am getting TOUCH markers for Xmas yay!
Wow, that's an awesome Christmas gift :)

These were so helpful thank you so much 🙏 I have them but didnt know how to use them properly until now
oh i love this, i mean i learned soooo much but had so much fun doing it! Love your voice as well as your cute drawings. Im hooked and maybe ill even treat my markers better
The blender is supposed to be used before you put colors i think???? Im guessing, and saw someone successfully blend by using it first so thats probably what you need to do. But I was confused about it literally until only a hour ago /after watching the video and seeing her do it/
Thanks for your tip :) Some others said this in the comment section too! I still haven't tried it, but I will definitely do so soon!
StabbyAbby
*gasp* EDD!! I love your profile pic sooo much, dude!
Can you slurp the alcohol out of the markers? And, if so, is it any good?
read the material safety datasheet. Usually, they contain ethanol and isopropanol. Do not consume isopropanol.
i have, it made me through up a little and i had to go to poison control but the affects were great, it was like i was high for a year straight
Why not make another video with the same idea but with content for more experienced artists? I've been using markers for a few months now and I managed to blend and avoid smearing black now but I just can't seem to prefect my art like I want
I have no problem with drawing but with coloring
Thank you for your suggestion, that's a very good idea :) I will try to come up with some helpful tips the next time, to prepare a new video ^^ But it won't go up until next year, because I pre-recorded stuff for December🙃
HanaOtaku What kind of problems do you have with the coloring? The technique?
Adrian Crevan th-cam.com/video/ZnC1onMmpZo/w-d-xo.html
I did this with markers
You can see it and tell me yourself if I have anything I should correct. I'd really like to have some advice I feel like I still don't know everything I should know about markers....
HanaOtaku Will do!
HanaOtaku I commented on that video of yours :F
Your are a natural comedian. Your timing is perfect and I laughed through this informative video. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for your incredibly kind comment :) And sorry for my late response XD #iwasonvacationanditwasgreat! :D
Love this video! So glad you posted it 🙂
Thanks a lot for your kind words :)
Thenk for the superior tips :3 and.. I have small question.. : czech/english? Because tittle and description is czech, but video English..
Thanks, I am glad that the video was helpful for you :)
I uploaded the video in English and the title is also in English.
