  • A couple of weeks ago I got my first look and the all new Kia EV9. It is packed full on innovative features and technology that leads the way in the large electric SUV segment. It had edgy looks that I am sure will divide opinion but there is no doubt it is a well thought out car design.

    Its looks are err challenging . How can any car that big and heavy possibly be green ? For me hell on wheels . I want a well built car with NO tech , a 1988 Saab 9000 , perfect.

    Great car and very well covered, given the very limited time you have at these events. Love how Kia are really helping to drive the EV market. I do love the blind spot cameras coming up on the dash. To be fair Tesla’s do it too, but having no instrument binnacle, the camera view appears on the main screen, which requires a look to the side.

    Interesting comment about the door mirror/camera issue. Harry's reel on the EQXX revealed that Mercedes have door mirrors on the 1200km range family car because cameras draw unnecessary power from the batteries. A mirror is aerodynamic as you make it.

  • @Cttechexpress
    @Cttechexpress 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    RWD is a no-go in cold states and the AWD is going to hit $75K plus dealer markups, and only have around 230 miles of range. I guess for that price they're still in a class of their own for now though, with the nicer and better spec Volvo EX90, Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S all costing significantly more.

    Great review! On the face of it these seem expensive, but prices of cars are high and I think you get a lot of bank for your buck. After all, other big SUV’s are even more.

    For a mid-size SUV this actually might sell well in Australia. SUVs here (Toyota RAV4 and Kluger/Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX9 etc etc) are the third most popular type of vehicle after dual cab utes (Ford Ranger, Isuzu DMax, Toyota Hilux and Dodge RAM) and 4x4s like the Landcruiser, Prado, Patrol etc. Sedans and station wagons are becoming less popular, leaving mainly small hatchbacks in 4th position. Even though our fuel is much cheaper than in the UK and outside of coastal main cities EV facilities are few and far between, I think this will do well. What this country needs for EVs is one that can drive off road, tow 3 tonne and cross creeks, all with a 700km + range with the AC on 24/7.

    Hi Ped
    A really pro review, suggest Kia have this on screen in all their showrooms. Styling I think would be an acquired taste, many if the features good and in some cases ahead of the game. The only drawback for anyone considering or who can afford it, is the woeful lack of infrastructure in this country and this crazy headlong rush to Net Zero😢

    A big beast of a car with interesting tech in it. The new Defender has that rear mirror camera system as I had it in the car I had on test for a day at launch. It took a bit of getting used to but by the end of the day I really liked it. The ability to charge an e bike is a game changer for me. Maybe a replacement for our i-Pace.

    I used to recommend Hyundai and Kia to everyone as great value vehicles. No longer the case. Plus, the recalls on their products would be a major concern.

      @JohnLee-db9zt 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Which EV hasn’t had recalls or problems? The problem related to the recall only affects about 7% of the vehicles. As far as Kona is concerned, it’s the last generation related to malfunctioning batteries.

    Just a point on the wing mirror cameras, they use electricity, is the minor aero benefit getting you the power back you would use in their operation. Why not simple aero proper mirrors which you can get that different perspective from 🤔

    You can't deny that Kia/Hyundai are leading the way as far as innovative design and interior technology is concerned, but this comes at a price point that is still out of reach for your average car buyer.
    Like to know your thoughts Pete on where our battery technology will be say 10 years from now and how this will effect residual values of EV's on sale just now ?
    As for the EV 9... I'll wait to see on in the metal before passing judgment on its looks !

    In olden times the affordable cost of a new family car was estimated to be one third of the family income. Apply that now and to buy the basic Kia EV9 the family would need to earn £195,000/year.
    However, times have changed. If we take a young family with two kids with a mortgage, rates, gas, electricity, food, clothes and financing an EV9 then the family income would need to be around £80,000/year. No holidays allowed though.

    Wel Peter…Kia/Hyundai are some way in front of most manufacturers and EV’s in particular. I think they have got a bit off target with Genesis but that will be short lived. The electronic screen door “mirrors” are a very bad Idea..in effect useless and as you say, the tiny screens are non adjustable and the right hand one is covered completely by my hand holding the steering wheel. I think they are such a flawed design and concept that they should be withdrawn from sale immediately and banned by legislation because they are dangerous..even the Genesis man agreed with me that they are rubbish! That rear view mirror is a different thing though..fine and of course on many JLR cars now….perfect for any van though!! The EV9 will sell fast..comments on the price are understandable but the roads are filled with £80,000+ cars now so people are buying them. Good work again. Richard 😀😀😀😀

    I have to say it looks epic. Usually chunky angular stuff looks awkward & doesn't date well (some Lexus SUVs for example) but this seems right.

    Kia have some cracking cars in the market at the moment and this certainly looks like another string to it’s bow, I love the space, the way they are going there own route with either 6 or 7 seats perfomance of 4wd motor choice and all the tech, looks wise it’s a bit marmite and possibly the colour may make all the difference, but sadly priced out the market for Joe Public and am not sure if those that could afford to buy it would want the Kia badge?

    Can't believe the price! The using an EV to store electricity is an interesting concept. As with all these clever ideas, it will ultimately lead to electricity prices going up during off-peak if everyone charges their car to power the house during the day! If this pricing persists though we have a major problem as £70k+ for a Kia, who's market is normally well below that level, just isn't affordable and is going to price people out of EV's. I think we will see another two generations of car battery tech before 2035 which is going to make the residuals on the current over-priced offerings extremely poor. Rent if it makes sense financially for the lease period, but buy at your peril I think.

    Wow that’s one really lovely mean looking car. Love the Matt finish like to see it in Matt Black with Black detailing and privacy glass it really would look something out of a SiFi movie. Look forward to when you get one to drive. It’s much better looking than the ugly Ford Explorer.

    With aero efficiency and lightness of materials the right way to go forward for electric cars the SUV trend will run out of steam in a few years time. Off road ability is irrelevant as most of these vehicles of this type never go near a dirt track.

    I'll be honest, this is the first, and only EV I've seen that makes me think, "I quite like that." Obviously I'd rather this feeling would go away as quickly as possible, and please don't tell anyone I said that! After all, how can I maintain my prejudiced opinion of EVs if I start getting seduced by cars like this!🙄😉😂

    Why...it's bigger in the THIRD row than my dear ol' Dad's Anglia 100E, lol! It looks like we're gonna get an enthusiast drive of this SUV from you in the near future. Some of the TH-camrs in the USA have tested that electronic rearview mirror in various GM cars here, and SOME say that their eyes shift focus to read that screen whereas they don't when using it as a garden-variety, reflective-surface mirror. A strange little request from me, then, if you please, sir: I hope you'll give your opinion on this experience. I have a mirror on both ends of my bike's handlebars AND a tiny one on my specs whilst riding. I can't dodge coffins without my mirrors, so I've turned myself into a mirror boffin. Aloha and take care!🤙

    There are many things wrong with this insane push to an all eletrctric future, but for me, this car sums up everywhere it's gone completely off the rails. The looks are subjective (it's ugly), but the size, weight, cost and a ridiculous 100kWh battery just make you ask the question - is there anything really eco at all about a car like this?

      Err...yes, it doesn't burn petrol or diesel with all that entails in terms of toxic emissions. Also, electricity can and is being increasingly produced by renewable sources. Last year I did all my driving of 19,500 km on the electricity from my solar panels. The anti-EV rhetoric is getting ridiculous and the petrol heads never seem to consider where their fuel comes from. It takes huge amounts of energy to pump crude oil out of the ground, ship it, refine it and ship it again to the petrol station....not to mention the spills and leaks that cause endless amounts of environmental damage along the way. I can drive my EV 25 miles on the electricity it takes to refine a gallon of petrol, and that's only one stage in the wasteful, toxic process of the oil industry.

    Love the look of this and it has many very clever ideas….. but! ….. what it is missing is a V8/V6 engine!! How is a 6/7 seat massive SUV going to save the planet? Absolute nonsense! Also out in the real world very few people with a young family are going to be able to afford £70k plus purchase price ….. we really are being lead up the wrong road here sorry 😣

    You know what's going to happen once they've pushed us all into EVs don't you? These extras, things like climate control and so on, are going to be something you have to pay a monthly subscription for rather than a fixed feature of the car. I've already heard of an EV owner that had his keyless entry deleted because it shouldn't have been there in the first place because it hadn't been paid for.
    As if that's not bad enough, I can see problems further down the line when somebody else buys the car and wants to activate the feature but finds it's all clogged up because it hasn't been used for 3 years.

    Unless electric cars come at sensible prices it just isn't going to happen. 60 k for a car (which will be worth 30 k after two years) is ridiculous. These reviewers talk about 50/60/70 k cars like it's perfectly normal and we will just choose which one we will have. Crazy..
