The Chinese-sourced EV battery is both technically better and affordable. I believe that all EVs priced above 65k do not use a Chinese-sourced battery, suggesting that it is pretty hard to cut the price to be lower than 65k and still provide a decent driving range without a Chinese-sourced battery.

      After two years I just made the first regular service and had absolutely no problems. First car in 54 years that in two years just needed 4 wheel changes as we have hard winters in Swiss mountains where we live. And I had mostly potent German premium in similar performance classes so also TCO is far from used to be. It’s one of our cheapest cars besides our Tesla business fleet. Including investments for PV and powerwall and 11 kWh chargers (we charge in 10 seconds and have climatized car in the morning) since our first Tesla in 2008 we started to safe (inflation included) a high 30% on car cost and had nearly no more downtimes. Also we are FREE from manipulative oil prices and petrol or diesel from politically questionable sources working against our interests of democracy, religion and freedom and war!

      The Rav hybrid strangely faster than most petrol SUV in its class, and wipes the hybrid, diesel and turbo current Sportage. The awd in the Rav gets the power down much better as well. Toyota are the kings of Hybrid. So makes sense for Kia to go all electric. These are lovely looking cars and seem better that the full electric Toyota in this class. Not sure why Toyota aren't bringing the performance Rav motor to Australia from the US which will match this. But then again the Rav is so ridiculously popular here there is no need.

    • @Alaster-
      @Alaster- 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@justinseauIt's common sense to have full functional v2g (not just v2l - which is basically a joke) and mandating chargers have the capability to accept it. Therefore our govt's will sit on this for decades... Not holding any hope of there being a standard soon...

    • @wmfoster
      @wmfoster 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Alaster- V2L isn't a joke when it is able to output 15Amp 3600W. Plenty of rural properties already have a generator cut over switch on the main board. Flick to the input plug, and 15Amp will run lights and power points. No need to start up the genset unless you need to reheat the hot water tank or fire up the air conditioning.
      V2G sounds great until you realise you need your state government, energy distributor, wholesaler and retailer to all agree to it before you can pay your sparky $1,000 to install a $10,000 V2G 2 way charge controller!!!

    • @Alaster-
      @Alaster- 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@wmfoster you're right, v2l has it's uses, but it's still a joke on the grand scheme of where we should be at. 15A is great if you want to go camping, or camp in your house during a blackout. Just don't turn on your kettle and anything else at the same...
      V2g is vastly superior in it's power delivery and capacity to load-shift energy consumption and production. Setup up correctly - it enables those with solar, to competely power their house and time-shift solar production or for others to load shift off-peak electricity. You can do it with several brands of house installed batteries now, all we need to do is have the capability to plug the car into it properly.
      V2g is being trialled and will be introduced wholesale sometime in the next decade or 2. I've spoken with engineers at our local grid control station - and they've advised they're already planning for it (and are well aware of the trials going on).
      Prices are expensive now - there's only 1 charger available in Australia last check, and the minority of EVs don't support v2g anyways. As with any new technology the prices will drop as soon as it becomes mainstream. As usual, the rest of the world will make it mainstream, and we'll be another decade behind... I doubt I'll buy an EV until it is.

    • @wmfoster
      @wmfoster 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Alaster- To the best of my knowledge South Australia is currently the only state you can connect a V2G charger in and the total battery outgoing power capacity (sum of V2G charger and any "home" batteries) must be below 10kVA per phase (30kVA for 3 phase site).
      Even a simple vehicle charger over 20Amp (>4.5kW) requires approval from SA Power Networks there!
      They had a deal with JET Charge for a bidirectional charger for the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander (both CHAdeMO).

      I suspect the shift from EGMP, from NMC battery, from RWD and from 800 v architecture is a money saving exercise - if it manifest as a product at a great price then jobs a good one but if not sadly a fail. Let’s hope the other offerings (EV3 and EV4) which Kia in 2020 announced would all be built on the EGMP are not compromised like this offering. We need competitive pricing to be driven by economies of scale, improved manufacturing technique and innovation leading to cheaper batteries not by compromise on materials, design or technology!

      Hyundai’s Kona & Kia’s Niro nailed it with efficiency and range. But since both of the aforementioned, they’ve gone for the US market model. That being, include everything, built like a brick on wheels, don’t bother with range and to hell with efficiency. So long as the Yanks can class it as SUV and it looks like an IBC on wheels.

    Bonjour from France and thanks for a great review of this interesting car. I've owned an e-Niro since 2019 and it has been faultless. My local Kia dealer says we won't get the EV5 until next year, this may be because Kia have a plant in Slovakia and may produce it there to take full advantage of any European country incentives. We don't put tariffs on cars coming from China as the USA does but anything built in Europe will get incentives, certainly here in France. The key to EV5 success is of course making them in volume.

We don't know how the Chinese KIA will compare until it's been selling here for a couple of years. One thing going in KIA's favour is its dealer network, as mentioned by Paul.
