I know that it is not the case today, but as a historian I find it rather amusing and wholesome that you as an Austrian is dating a Serbian. The reason why I find this so is because your countries beef with one another started WW1 and changed the world forever.
Plus it might be a possibility that your ancestors were trying to shoot each other

@@glassychap1141 good argument! And you are totally right. We both like history, travelling and we talk often about such things and watch documentaries (like this one). My granddad was stationed in Yugoslavia during WW2, while her great granddad died unfortunately. But yeah. Luckily these times passed and hopefully never come back. I love Serbia and their amazing hospitality. Also she also finds it amusing that I wear a Gavrilo Princip T-Shirt for sleeping (got it as a present in Serbia ;'D ) Well what should I say .... hahahhaa

As a Russian Orthodox Christian, I believe that we're all children of our Lord. Even Muslims, gays and other people who break God's commandments. We can pray for all of us. And wish for each one to repent of their sins and come to the Lord.
And I don't think it's a sin to visit a Catholic church and worship there.

I don't think that part of this video was very well presented. There are people who call themselves Catholic, but have even been to an extent excommunicated or barred from receiving Holy Communion, such as some politicians who push anti-Christian things, and are called not real Catholics. To refer to a survey of people who call themselves Catholic and then give an answer on a social or political issue, isn't really comparing two religions. What does the Bible say about it? What does the Pope say? What are the teachings of the two churches? And if the video is going to mention a current fad, why not give more of a history, how only in very very very recent years has public opinion swayed a bit, at the moment, to support gay marriage, etc. Perhaps someone will say yes they support it, but some years ago they didn't, and their parents and grandparents don't, who are of the same religion. To look at a snapshot of public opinion (and what self identifying Catholics were surveyed? Just those in the US?) and tell us about the differences between Catholic and Orthodox, in my opinion is not really explaining the differences between the two. It would be like highlighting when someone sins, or is in error, and saying that defines their beliefs. No, that is a sin or an error according to their belief system or their religion.

10:04 fun fact is that Orthodox people rearly sit while praying. It's an exaggeration to say "it happens more" because 99% people stand during prayers (even most of children) even for hours. The thing is that Orthodox churches do have some chairs benches, but they are generally used by old or sick people while the prayer is going on but they are placed near the walls while most of the actual church is empty (for people to stand) with the middle part usually having the icon of the sait of the church (this can vary). Everything here obviously varies from region to region (im personally from Serbian Orthodox region) but it looked like a fun detail to mention here
Great video btw, really enjoyed it

I'm coming from a mixed Catholic - Orthodox background. My Catholic relatives have been very religious, church going people. There have been nuns, priests and church musicians among them. When I was young I was absolutely indifferent to Orthodoxy and the only connection I had was the fact I was baptised Orthodox as a child. Although not being very religious, I absolutely loved Catholic church and was often to masses, weddings and baptisms. I was like one inch close to converting to Catholicism.
Getting older I've become more and more into Orthodoxy. It's traditional, raw, mystical, spiritual, kind and there's nothing more sublime than the Holy Orthodox liturgy.

Greetings, my beloved begotten sister/brother! I have some feedback if that's okay. I'd like to say that we as people are so glad that you have converted to Orthodoxy. I so agree it's much more traditional and pretty much more experienced than anything else. That's because it's connected to the Julian calendar (it's old style, but it's the truth) which is a lot better than the Catholic Gregorian calendar (modern-day people celebrate) that my personal opinion is not very truthfully celebrated and not very old style either(old style Julian calendar - either ancient, but has more experience and is blended with Orthodoxy - the traditional way to celebrate the best Orthodox holidays) you know that in Greek it translates to "Prawoslawye"? This is why in the Southern East countries, there are countries that are part of the Balkan. The Balkans are countries, located in the South East(Europe) where many of the population in there who are in it are called Slavic people. Over the past years, history has been one of the top main traditions and cultures from which we adapted today. Bulgaria, one of the Balkans, (next to the Black Sea borders) has one of the largest History in the whole of Europe (probably in the world too), and it's placed the second best mineral baths(in the world?) In the whole continent. As a Bulgarian person, if we ever have been asked how much big is either our history, culture, tradition (etc), oh my, it's going to be, a never-ending topic! Not only in Bulgaria but also in the whole Balkan municipality too! There's Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Croatia- one of my beloved countries that has one of the most amazing cultures and traditions ever recorded. My apologies for not providing more information, as because of that will be probably one of the longest comments ever, but if you'd like to dig deeper into our Balkan world, you are always free to explore and learn about the amazing story of, Slavic people, one of the most amazing countries in the whole world.. My mom is from Bulgaria, so I know a lot about Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Eastern Orthodox Christianity’s cross has three lines the normal one, right above the normal one is a much smaller line, and a long diagonal line at the bottom. That is supposed to represent The Holy Trinity. Look up Eastern Orthodox cross to see it.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the middle one represents the son because Jesus’s arms were hanging there, the top the father because God rules heaven, and finally the bottom represents the Holy Spirit because it roams Earth.

I'm a Catholic and among the more traditional variety. We should follow the ancient tradition of our church during Lent and also fast for 40 days as our Orthodox brethren do. I attempted this for Lent this year, and though I failed a couple of times, it is truly something which enriches the soul. We should also follow the tradition of fasting on all Wednesdays and Fridays. I'm Scottish and in Scottish Gaelic, the names of three days of the week relate to this old fasting tradition - Wednesday is DiCiadain, "day of the first fast", Thursday is DiarDaoin, "day between the fasts", and Friday is DihAoine, "day of the fast".

Orthodoxism prays to the God as main diety, orthodoxism allows divorces if the spose is alchoolic, violent, or sociopathic, orhodoxism allows marriage withing the church of an orthodox and another type of christian, without reconversion as it is believed that baptizing a follower of christ twice, is a heresy. And we don't pay a monthly tax to be part of the church. You pay a gift when you baprize a child, when you get married and when somebody dies, but not monthly, and nobody ex communicates you if you haven't went to the church for a year. Just to clarify: Papal Infallibilty in the Catholic Church only applies to When the Pope is speaking on matters of faith and morals, as well as when he has specifically stated that he is speaking "ex cathedra" (from the chair of Peter). This is very uncommon, and rarely happens during the time most Popes are in power. In short, video missed a pretty key detail.
Also I think it is important to note that Catholics do actually fast during Lent, it just happens to be less .. how do I put this.. intense? than Orthodox fasting. And fasting on Fridays is something that I wish more people did, tbh I think most just forget that is something we're generally supposed to do.

It didn't start out that way. The early Christians were horribly persecuted. Sadly this continued even after 'legalizing' Christianity. Even by the church itself! Remember the inquisition? And, the church tried to wipe out the Knights Templar, breaking into their homes & slaughtering them in front of their wives & children! They chose Fri. 13th to do that, which is why that date is considered unlucky. I believe the Knights Templar found the buried treasure in Solomon's temple; and were growing too powerful for the church's liking.

Correction: It's not "Arch Bishop of Moscow", it's the "Patriarch of Moscow". Also regarding Easter: while your explanation regarding Gregorian and Julian calendars are correct in the context of the New Calendar and Old Calendar (14 days difference), the Easter is being calculated based on the Moon calendar and Jewish Easter. Orthodox do take into account the Jewish Easter calendar, and the Orthodox Easter must happen after the Jewish Easter. The Catholic Easter doesn't take into account the Jewish Easter. So there are some years when Orthodox Easter overlaps with the Catholic Easter, so again this is nothing to do with the Gregorian or Julian Calendar. The Christmas, however, between Catholic and Orthodox is always 14 days apart because of the Gregorian (new) and Julian (old) Calendars. Also Orthodox receive the Holy Fire, Which happens on the Saturday of Orthodox Easter in Jerusalem.

The filioque, which likely originated in Spain as a defense against Arianism, only became a controversy when members of Charlemagne’s court adopted it and accused the Greeks of heresy for reciting The Creed in its original form. Even the pope at the time thought it was a bad idea to mess with The Creed. The real issue between East and West is the doctrine of papal infallibility and the idea that the pope, by himself, can define church doctrine. The Orthodox are proponents of the conciliar method employed in the great ecumenical councils forming the basis of the faith, where ALL the bishops met, discussed, and adopted doctrine together. It was the presence and collaboration of all the church leaders together which facilitated the holy spirit’s intervention.

    • @ownpetard8379
      @ownpetard8379 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

The Holy Spirit's intervention, but yes.
The origin of the Roman Catholic Church in its present form is Charlemagne. He established the Holy (no, not hardly) Roman (no, German) Empire (not much compared to the Roman Empire in New Rome - Constantinople). He sought out obscure doctrines (filioque, exotic Redemption theories) and discredited practices (unleavened bread for Holy Communion, unmarried priests) to bring into his church to distinguish it from the Orthodox churches of the east, especially that of the Queen City, Constantinople. He was the reason for the split between East and West.

This is very interesting, I’ve never really had the chance to learn much about the Easter Orthodox Church. As a Catholic living in the Bible Belt of America I’ve mainly only been around Protestants.

It’s fascinating. Especially the Middle Eastern one (where Christ was basically born) and which unfortunately is the most oppressed - because they live in highly Muslim areas, sometimes extremist Islamist

@@BlueSwampyCraft and what is the middle eastern one exactly? All the ancient Orthodox Patriarchates (Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria) exist in the middle east, and the Monophysite Copts, Armenians, Syriac etc Orientals exist there too😛

I was 5 years of chronic illness! I was Semi Housebound, lost my health, job, finances and my fiance left me. I couldn't even look at electronic screen for 5 minutes, or hold a 10-minute conversation.
But God did an amazing work.
I now have a Christian Channel where I encourage people and show them what God did in my life and that there is hope for you also. ✝️🔥😊

My partner is from Croatia and he says these are the 2 main religious where he lives. Apparently, Croats are most frequently catholic and Serbs are most frequently orthodox. The 2 spent a long time hating each other resulting in war during the 90s. He's told me some heartbreaking stories, but he's gotta be the most fascinating and awesome man I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.

As a Serb, you can't rely on any story from Balkans 100%. All countries on the Balkans have done some terrible things. It's just, many Croats and Serbs are rather willing to hate each other and put all the blame on the other rather than both admit their faults and reconcile, as we're painfully similar in linguistic alone, and should've been brothers, not enemies.

The first thing you got wrong was the debate over semantics. Orthodox is the original teachings. If women are supposed to sit on the pews to the right, and men on the left, that's it. No discussion. You do it or leave.
