    I am a pragmatist and I can't recommend swapping the engine if the one you have sounds good and drives fast, and you have already been through it and know the condition. You sound almost self sabotaging. You finally have something going good in life. Just let it be nice as is. Just fix the little problems, and enjoy the car. If the engine goes, hell yea, drop in something faster, more modern, more pontiac, whatever. You can achieve a nice sound with the right exhaust setup. You should probably sue that stupid body shop though. You and c milk could easily have done that bodywork and paint yourselves in 16 months and not lost all the extra parts. That's unacceptable. Pandemic is no excuse.

      @Billy Schocher if its a 403, i wouldnt change it at all. 403 olds has a 4.351" bore and a 3.38" stroke. thats NUTS. a better camshaft, headers, and intake manifold along with timing adjustments, and it would be a screamer.

    Sady Winston, it went exactly as I said it would when you dropped off the T/A at that body shop. I said they would have it waaaay longer than they promised and that they would lose and break parts. It is the nature of most body shops it seems. Glad you are finally living the dream my friend. By the way, my 82 T/A came out well.

      One of the benefits of living in a small town for a couple of decades is recognizing professional LOCAL businesses versus clown town pretenders. I agree many/most(?) body shops have rotten customer service records.
      I've got a guy I met over 15 years ago. He's a manager/scheduler. He's remarkable at doing what he promises and standing behind his shop's work. I've followed him to 3 or 4 different shops over the years because of this. If you have a solid mechanic or body shop guy - hang on to them and treat them well.

    • @deusexaethera
      @deusexaethera 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you want a body shop to fix your car properly, have a mechanic strip it down to the bare chassis first. Body shops don't have any expertise with functional parts, they only know bending metal and spraying paint.

    • @danhoyland142
      @danhoyland142 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that’s average turn around time for a to bare metal paint job. Mine was stuck at a shop for 4 years before I got it back in primer then spend another 6 months at another shop for paint.

    The body shop’s priorities are insurance claims so they lag on just regular projects. Had the same issue when I had my car in the body shop paying them cash. They just would not care about my car because it was paid for.
    So yeah they care much more about insurance claims. Your project gets forgotten.

    • @thebigpicture2032

      Shops in my area only do insurance claims. They can make 1000 a day per bay doing insurance jobs so restos would get pushed to the back and worked on intermittently. Finally they just stopped old cars altogether.

    I have a 1979 WS6 Trans Am with the 400 Pontiac engine. I bought it new and have had it for 42 years. In 2018 I had the engine rebuilt. It took six months to get it back. The mechanic did a great job. Then in 2019 I took it to a paint guy with 50 years experience. He had it ten months, but it was well worth it. The car came out beautiful. Looks and runs good as new. It cost me a small fortune to get it restored, but I would do it again in a second. I love my Trans Am.

A lot of it comes from the fact people on the coastal areas are more wealthy overall and can be more exploited. So if you take the Trans Am to car shows and meetups, you can always just put the California plates on for show, and use the PA plates for legit driving around.

    2 days to get to Pennsylvania for a podcast. That sounds like a bet for the Bandit! You just need to get C-Milk an 18 wheeler and go eastbound and down with your CBs... lol @17:15 never ming grin., keep in mind the BOP engines were I think 50 lbs lighter than the chevies. Don't know if it is possible (as big blocks were able to be fit into Camaro or novas, You might be able to fit a caddie 500 that in 70 put out 400 hp 550 ft lb torque from the factory with low rise intake (it is actually below the ports lol) and Q jet, and can make 600 + with aluminum intake, heads...(and the blocks are cheap and again weigh about the same as what you have not) but nothing too outrageously custom. It also would be mostly torque so it would pull harder but not be peaky horsepower, Still matching numbers is smart, and is unique with everyone swapping in ls's. The only other weird idea is a 3.8 turbo from a GTX ... but yeah that's a different direction entirely. Anyhoo just a thought - stay awesome! look up Cad performance, or Hot Rod magazine in August 89 did an article (there have been newer ones) Anchors Aweigh (The budget solution - 500-cid Cadillac torque monsters); Keep in mind the 67-69 eldorado's were pulling spces yes including cornering, etc generally in line with contemporary Jags and Mercedes of the same time. With an aluminum intake and heads you might shave 100 lbs off the front end and help balance etc. and have an extra 200 - 300 lbs of torque and 1-200 hp.again = just a thought, Again they still seem to be a bit overlooked so are not unobtanium like a 427 ford or chevy esp ford SOHC , 426 Hemi,,, My 71 Cady elderado with one could pull well and still with tall, narrow tires respond - turn fairly well in a pinch. (I was able to float sideways - oversteer and correct it in the snow to avoid a wreck in the snow by someone pulling out of a parking lot when the other lane was stopped by using break oversteer - throttle understeer..)

    Granted, I never had a 'dream car' per se, but I can totally relate to Winston's feelings. When I got a 1997 3.2 SMG M3, I finally understood what a good handling car actually feels like.
    Aftermarket exhaust (Remus) -> even with my HQ audio setup, every 1st month in the spring I'd just listen to the exhaust sounds. Handling at the track was good, but, with new adjustable suspension (Koni/Eibach), the balance is almost unreal. The single piston brakes I never liked, but a Brembo setup with bigger discs did the trick. 'F1'-style paddle shifters on the steering wheel, the best mod ever.

    I’m Pontiac thru and thru, but any conversation takes a lot of extra money. Do a mild rebuild on what you have, up the rear gear to like a 342 rear gear, add an overdrive tranny, the TH200 that came in the Buick Grand National will bolt up directly to the old motor, and enjoy. Keep in mind building HP gets you to burning premium fuel which is about a buck more than regular, and 400 HP is not worth the squeeze since 600 plus is the standard. Your rear gear ratio is probable around a 273 since you dive at 70 mph and only turning less than 2k rpm. Definitely not a performance gear, but great for highway driving and saving fuel. Your carb is also set up for fuel economy due to the small primaries, and the secondaries are pretty large thus the loud sound when they open.

    I'm excited for you to finally have it back! I was a teenager when those were new and wanted one ever since. I've driven a couple from that vintage and agree with everything you described while driving it. When listening to you explain what you love about that car makes me feel that you will want to keep that original engine but with those upgrades on cylinder heads, camshaft, exhaust to get you additional hp. Looking forward to more videos with that car.

    Like the car, sorry you got the run around by the shop. I can't believe you had to purchase all the lost broken or broken parts while in shop. Sounds like maybe they were sold or stolen. What matters is you have your dream car back, it is beautiful, and it's all yours to enjoy. Take care be safe, and enjoy your beautiful classic muscle car.😊

    Can't believe you got it back. I thought you would have given up hope. I am really glad they got it finished. I do hope you have a awesome time with it. Sadly I expected they might mess up somewhere after I saw some of your footage. My one friend here in South Africa still have a Trans Am. It is a solid roof with no bird on the bonnet. He is currently repainting it from yellow to black. I wanted to say I recognized that accent of yours. Lol. Anyway hope you make more content with yours.

    Removing the gas is a safety thing. They are working with angle grinders and probably with welding equipment, and a tank full of flammable liquid might not be a good thing. They should've replaced it for you though.

    • @tomcherry7029
      @tomcherry7029 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You dont just remove the gas you need to remove the tank, it is the vapors that explode not the liquid.

    I feel your pain buddy. Having had a car myself, at a restoration premises for an extended period of time, and the amount of hard to get parts that just evaporated was extremely annoying. Lucky for me, I took photo's of everything I had in storage there. A few parts I will never see again. Left a really bad taste in my mouth with that restorer. Have since sold the car off, having not finished it, and bought a later model muscle car that's done, and driveable. Not the same as a 1970's muscle car though.

    It's your forever car, and you like the engine (you even said 'I couldn't be happier'), then you answered your question; no engine swap! It's cool you like the Olds engine (I know those used to get a lot of hate). Thank you for the commentary on the 2nd gen vs 3rd gen! I will be purchasing a late 2nd TA or 3rd gen TA within the next few years (I'd like to do Power Tour). Your commentary on the driving/road trip was very helpful.

    Winston, don't do it! Changing out the motor will ruin the car. It is more than the sum of its parts. Also, chasing HP numbers will steal its soul. It's a never ending Rabbit Hole you will regret going down and a money pit. Everything will need to be upgraded to accommodate the extra power, transmission, drivetrain, suspension. I only say this because I understand the love affair. I've done that to vehicles before and turned them into fire breathing monsters, all ended up getting sold. They loose those aspects that made you fall in love with them in the first place.
    Finally, I only happened across this Channel by accident today. Really surprised because I have been watching you for years on ADVChina and SerpentZA. You guys are prolific!!! Subscribed.

    Winston , you great taste in vehicles. This had me smiling . I had a 78 w72 four speed that I sold thirty years ago , but I still remember how such an relatively unsophisticated car can be so much fun ! and definitely more comfortable and roomy than a c 3 corvette.
    This point might be mute , but one minor mod I would suggest is a Walker replacement catalytic converter , as the newer honeycomb style flows much better than the original pellet converter. plus you will still be smog legal.
    Kudos for saving this Bird !

  • @LoneWolf-kw3ol
    @LoneWolf-kw3ol 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    considering all of the missing parts, over a year past the promised delivery, leaving it outside uncovered and then receiving it back non running with tons of loose bolts and shoddy polish, i would absolutely pursue legal action against the body shop and get your money back as well as making them pay for everything you had to replace and/or fix.
    Sadly, i imagine california law wont even think before siding with them as its well known california is extremely anti-consumer, but its certainly worth pursuing to at least some degree for compensation. *especially* because its the dream car.

    Grew up watching Smokey and the Bandit when, and fell in love with this car right off the bat. I have another car project that I am doing right now, but when it is done, and maybe a year after, I am getting myself a Pontiac Trans am as well. One difference though, I do prefer it without the t-top, but t-top is sexy as hell too.
    I do have to admit.... the 1970 model is my absolute fav type.

      It should have been a lawsuit, but I think Winston is too much like my British culture of ahhh its ok that's a lot of fuss to sue, we take it as a very big thing or as an inconvenience. But, in this case he should have certainly sued so they could settle at least on a price. Nobody should have this experience when sending your car in for bodywork. This is not China. This is not South Africa. This is America...Sue them.

    Also, I know they drive the car around to get it from place to place during prep, but a full tank to dry bones from a paint shop doesn’t sound very believable. Since it’s mostly insurance commissions, maybe they took it on a Joy ride because they’ve never gotten a car like this? Just theorizing, no validity whatsoever!

    The Olds 403 has a bit of a bad rep compared to the Pontiac 400, but I would definitely keep the car numbers matching and just enhance the Olds engine, which has nothing much wrong with it. There is lots you can do from a mild cam, to an alloy intake etc.

    • @motov8-garage832

      The 403 is not a bad engine, its reliable in stock form with good torque. It can be built, they make a girdle you can get for strength due to the webbed mains. It does have smog heads, which could be upgraded. The 403 could make an easy 400-500 hp with enough money. It's all in what you want to do and how much you like whichever said engine and $. Me myself I have a 79 ta with the original 403, it cruises good. I picked up a early 1975 Pontiac 400 that I plan on building to swap into my car. I personally feel the 400 is a better foundation to put my time and money into. A chevy 350 or an LS is also on my mind to thou...
