It's amazing how the participants of other marital art forms look upon Jukendo as a 'soft' form... There was nothing soft about this competition!!!

I can see that this is basically bayonet training, and that the goal is to score points by hits with the bayonet end. Excuse this gaijin for what he is about to ask. but if this is bayonet training, and the weapons used are to simulate rifles with fixed bayonets.... Why aren't the two trying to get a butt stroke on each other while in close?

i assume they must have some armor on the battlefield that would prevent blunt hitting from doing too much damage

There probably used to be in the original military manuals but this is just a watered down sporty version developed a few decades after the war, for whatever reason they decided certain techniques were no longer necessary in the sport. Think of it like in kickboxing (also once military fighting style) how your not allowed to hit a guy in the crotch.

Rifle butt strokes were taught in Jukendo's parent art, Juken Kakuto. A modern version of Juken Kakuto is still taught to the JDF. For competition however, it was difficult to design competitive armor that can defend a hard butt stroke, so strikes were limited to thrusts in Jukendo. As one commentator pointed out, it's the same reason you can't do crotch kicks in Muay Thai.

Jukendo is kind of like fencing with simulated bayonets. Same reason why in Olympic fencing you don't grapple with your opponent or hit him with the pommel of your sword
