I studied another style of Aikido - Shodokan (Tomiki) - as well as Aikikai (this vid), and I am struck to see how soft this style is here. After 2 years in Shodokan, it is very interesting to see how un-martial Aikikai has become. It’s pretty, tho.
That’s ridiculous! So you go into your dojo with the intent of destroying your practice partner. I’m glad I’ve never had the displeasure of meeting you.

What you appreciate in the video is what is commonly known as commercial Aikido or white-collar Aikido. This version of Aikido was developed by Koetsu (Kisshomaru) Ueshiba with the support of Koichi Tohei with the aim of attracting a new audience to its ranks. It must be borne in mind that, after the Pacific War and the defeat of Japan by means of the atomic power, all thoughts or activities related to the war and the imperial military values were *severely discredited* to the general public view. Therefore, to revive this organization, Koetsu renamed it as the "Aiki Corporation Main Aikido Dojo Headquarters" or _Aikikai Honbu Dojo_ . With this, aikido had to be re-presented to japan and the world in a non-warlike, non-aggressive, inclusive, harmonious way; a way for the new times and the new thinking, which derived gradually to the dynamic and aerobic dance-like training that is seen to this date. You will not find in this Aikido anything related to the study of martial prowess or effectiveness, since it is not its objective. At the end of the day (and this is just my opinion) Aikikai is *not* Ueshiba Morihei's Aikido, is Ueshiba Kisshomaru's Aikido. Ueshiba Morihei O Sensei already perceived these changes for a long time and for that reason he left Tokyo for the rural Iwama looking for a place to develop his Aikido and build a shrine dedicated to the deities of his discipline. His last years were spent in Iwama shaping what would be his final version of Aikido. Perhaps you should be inclined to look at Iwama or the styles developed by Ueshiba Morihei's students from before the war for that samurai legacy.

These Japanese fighting techniques evolved from the Samurai and the use of bladed weapons . I've seen knife defences in aikido . Whatever your martial art you'd better be very good against a knife because otherwise you'll get cut or stabbed . Our instructors were clear about this. Also , I remember being told 'try to keep still , don't jump about '.
Neither the doshu nor his successor are supposed to hold any ranks or belts. They are teaching and training outside the rank system, so no one stands above or below them.
The movements of Aikido are sound, the problem is with the pedagogy: they never teach them in a dynamic, holistic way and so they do not have a full understanding of the full utilities of any movement. There are Dynamic strikes, chokes, and breaks in Aikido most teachers have a basic understanding of but never apply beyond a shadowy expression that never gets due practice, and if you dont practice it, you won't do it.
Thank you very much for this, brilliant to see inside hombu dojo. If this class starts at 6 am, can you please tell me how many classes there are per day and how long are they?

I like aikido I've been doing it for six years at this point and have garnered a brown belt in it something people need to understand is not all aikido is the same style what you see in the video is the newest style of aikido stuff like yoshinkan and nishio aikido are some of the older styles back when O'Sensei had aikido as more closer to the roots of Jiu Jitsu and the originators of those styles learned from him at that period of time if you had to choose a form of aikido go for one of those or if you're lucky Steven Seagals aikido would be a better choice the techniques in that at least make more sense. That's not to say I think Aikido as a whole is effective there are things that work the wrist locks especially hurt like a bitch but I will agree with everyone there is some bullshit in aikido again this is coming from someone who has had over six years of experience in it so I feel like I know what I'm talking about.
I wouldn't train aikido for self-defence unless you have a teacher with a radically different training methodology. As you can see in this video, the head of the mainline doesn't teach techniques with resistance or from realistic attacks. As the Aikikai's website states, "The goal of Aikido training is not perfection of a step or skill, but rather improving one's character according to the rules of nature." In other words it doesn't aim to teach anything practical except character development.
Mihaly Sensei, I would like to help your channel to translate English subtitles into Portuguese, is it possible? Sometimes I do translations for Guillaume Erard Sensei's videos too. Thank you !
Naw not hard at all, if my 5 yr old can move me in the same direction I'm moving by using our momentums together - even she can lead me to the ground.. It's about flow not power & breaking the apponent's balance while you are rooted & centered at the same time accepting their force of direction towards you.. But will be honest, out of experience the only problem you'll find here is if the apponent is ""NOT committed to their attacks..
That cover photo of the sensei throwing an opponent with the effortless look on his face cracks me up. I guarantee it wouldn’t be so effortless for him to throw me.
You don't understand what is aikido. Aikido works by forming physical harmony with the assailant. That is the secret to aikido's effortless throwing. For all the energy you use to resist, it is the aikido guy's job to conform oneself to the rhythm of your energy.
I disagree with most people saying that Aikido doesn't work .All I see is them attacking the neck and the throat to me that is very dangerous 😜 I have never seen the MMA boys attack one another in the throat. Wrist locks are banned in full contact judo as well as finger locks the only thing they don't do are eye gouges. Also training with weapons are also essential for self defense. What you don't see are the full force strikes to the arms neck and throat which you need a split second before doing an arm ,wrist lock or a throw, very effective ...to me any who can smash a coconut with his bare hands is very dangerous 😜🤣
Uke can counter tori techniques easily, the form doesn't work. Tori is too far from uke to have any control. Tori most of time are not in the direction of uke. Aikido works, but aikidoka are very bad level, uke can't (and don't know) how to counter, how to correct tori techniques. Also aikidoka practice a form that have no sense, not usable.
Aikido can be very beautiful as every art however I don’t understand why they have so many of the people attack with a chop. This odds of this happening in a street encounter are next to none.
Not sure why people like you keep "popping up" onaikido channels, why not stay at the channels that you like and that you "understand", channels where a punch is a punch and a kick is a kick. You almost seem like a hater, a troll...
@@FreeSalesTips But it doesn't function in a fight. Trying to turn it into effective self defense or a combat style ruins what aikido is designed to do. Look at how they execute the moves, it's clearly made to look nice, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Is it normal for none of the other students to talk to a visiting foreigner? None of the Western students who spoke English even said a word to me. That was my experience with a class I attended this summer. The woman at the front desk was very helpful and nice, though.
While it is quite beautiful to watch, from an 'arts' perspective... if anyone actually resisted or fought back; 3/4 of those techniques would never work! They only flow so easy because the partner is going with every movement.
Aaron Rodriguez Aikido is not designed for fight, only for defense. If you want to hurt somebody and you throw a committed attack to an Aikidoka you are gonna get destroyed.
Carlos Centeno you're completely wrong, someone who trains even for a month in mma or boxing will pass a Aikidokas defense immediately and KO. even moreso if the person has jiujitsu/wrestling/judo experience. someone trained only in aikido will be annihilated in a fight against someone of any skill level in other martial arts under the MMA umbrella, period.

I also liked the principals of redirection and flow, similar to small circle jujitsu.
Rei (bowing) is used to do both. I did Aikikai Aikido in New Orleans, Louisiana approximately five years. How Aikido is done it is mostly in silence and you learn through observation and experience just as other Japanese meditative arts. Discussion is done either before or after Keiko (class).
@@kevionrogers2605 Thanks for your reply. I understand rei, but not talking to your students is inconsiderate. I'm not sure that aikido is "mostly done in silence" - it is up to the discretion of the teacher - but even if it were the case, that applies to keiko not to the beginning and end of class. A teacher that says absolutely nothing and barely acknowledges the existence of their students is not a good teacher.
@@shugyosha7924 From my experience in Aikikai Aikido with the United States Aikido Federation that is generally how a class is done. Also examinations have talking in it.
@@kevionrogers2605 My experience is with Aikikai. If every teacher decided to copy the doshu, I think that would just make everyone worse teachers.
I just have to step up to the plate and say it. aikido is BULLSHIDO!!! I wasted a year of my life training this bullshit. I dont understand why youre making fun of Aikido. I started training in Aikido when i was 10 years old, after watching under siege and yes I know some people dont like Steven seagal but it inspired me. I went to study with the great white tiger while he was still forming the UFC with Mr. Frank Dux and they used me as an example of how a 10 year old boy weighing 80lbs can easily stop a 200lb boxer with out even gettting hit. I also learned the death touch but i can not use on it anyone for obvious reasons. People only talk crap about Ninjaitsushotojutsu and Aikido el stevo no touch empty hand bullshitokungfuo because they are whimps, and know their worthless MMA is no match for us in real life hand to hand to the death combat. ive studied at the yellow bamboo, the black belch academy, and even a little at My Hero Academia, so I know what im talking about. Aikido is the most lethal combat style ever made, and to suggest other wise is preposterous !!

John Maisonneuve Whatever you think of his movies, Segal was the first westerner to open a dojo in Japan. He was seventh dan at the original Hombu dojo!
In a street fight or attack, i doubt any one would offer his hand like that. theyd punch and kick!/ or use wepons. what im getting at here, is, is this practical defence in a real situation? Oky, i guess the answer is yes, if you know what your doing!
For all the naysayers: there are no claims being made by Aikido that it is purposed for fighting or for self defence. Those are claims being made by other martial arts about Aikido. Indeed some independent dojos make such claims, but usually there are combative variations being taught in those dojos. Such variations are not taught in Hombu Dojo. The mainline purpose in Aikido training is not for fighting. There are greater things in life that fighting with other people. And it is those things that Aikido focuses on.
Why do you do a martial art? Just dance, it is the same. Or change the category of aikido as gymnastics. Official school in my country have said during many years "aikido, learn the way to defend you". C. Tissier said that too. The last decade, aikido dojo don't use the word defend. They realize that aikido is just useless, and a gymnastics. Aikido have no plus value than other gymnastics. That's why aikido fall down.
Akido always look beautiful. However it seems there is so much co-operation between the two so that the attack doesn’t seem realistic. The attacker is quite passive after the initial defence and lets him or her be twirled around. Certainly many believers.
you can tell how awkward it is for the students "sparring" each other bc the one guy playing along doesnt know which direction to shift his body weight to throw himself hahaa
I've trained this art for about 9 years and now I'm back to training with masters from Korea sadly I feel this art will not work against a trained fighter I have gotten it to work in situations in bars on the street Etc but you are fooling yourself if you think it's going to work on a trained fighter you're going to get knocked out I don't care what your degree is I know I've seen it first-hand it doesn't work

I have practiced Aikido myself for many years: it truly is an amazing *ART*. But it has nothing to do with practical self defense: *any* 6 months experienced kick boxer will win from even 5th Dan Aikidoka.
Aikido is for training your mind and body, let them grow and bring them together. A kickboxer who wants to grow and make or bring his own martial art to the next level can use aikido to make this true. My own experience with martial artists, boxing, kick boxing, kyodo and others give myself as an aikidoka the change to improve my own martial art. Once a master in boxing was my opponent in the dojo. It was unbelievable what we, me and the opponent, have learned from each other. It is still 8 years ago and the memories are stil living. I say to you : ‘this is aikido, this is boxing, these are martial arts'
Why do you and the three other guys use the same exact lines. “I have practice Aikido for c number of year” “but it has nothing to do with self defense” are you in bjj gyms and you are losing business. Fucking pathetic!
@@barney2403 look anyone can get lucky but the facts are this is not an effective self defense martial art. While they do have some moves that are effective the martial art as a whole is fairly ineffective. There's a reason this art isn't used or trained for combat sports. I'm not trying to bash the art or anyone who chooses to practice or learn it. I'm just saying from a self defense standpoint it's a terrible choice. All I'm saying is if I'm going to put time and effort into a martial art. I also want it to benefit me in real life if I need it. There are plenty of arts that are way more beneficial than this.
Aikido is a sort on mutual dancing with full participation of the pretend ‘attacker’; “give me your pretend strike”, unrealistic but mutually comforting, and watch me twirl you around. Indeed, it’s pretty but simply vacuous and but certainly a feel good’ activity, for a committed mind-set .
I was teaching a couple of days ago and caught my foot while receiving a technic from my senior student while we practiced vigorously- not presenting to class. I was punching to the face in a practical way. As I caught my foot in my hakama I was unable to correctly receive and nearly broke my neck as my face was driven into the mat and my body pivoted over the top of my head still pinned to the mat. What you are watching here is teaching - presenting to a class - like you watch boxers practicing in a gym on a punch ball. Don't mistake practice to imprint correct movement and technic with practical application which is very dangerous if you fail to receive. You only demonstrate in comment that you have never practiced anything for a lifetime - like a gymnast that must know every movement to N-degree or suffer terrible injury. In Aikido we practice in many ways - this is class , a beautiful class that has many levels depending on you training of martial arts and what layer of knowledge you see. I strongly recommend you find a martial art and practice a lifetime and then understand.
Kenji Nakakura Yes, a true believer - certainly unable to see reality. There is a reason that there is no competition in Aikido (one exception - and if you see it, it’s pathetic). But, not surprising, it doesn’t matter to the true believers. Sorry to let some reality in.
Do you even have ANY idea of how Aikido was created and what history it has? Do you have ANY idea, that all of these principles and techniques originally come from the battlefields of Japan in it's samurai-era? Do you have ANY idea of how o sensei was so sick of all those killings and deaths he had to excecute or have experienced before 2nd world war when he was young(he was in the army and he was a bodyguard of his mental mentor in those years) - that he started to create Aikido - a way to avoid violence in a very effective and harmless way? Do you have ANY idea how DEADLY these Aikido-techniques can be if excecuted just a little bit differently from what you can see in a dojo(where OBVIOUSLY no one wants to die nor get seriously injured!)? Of course not.
In all of my years as Aikidoka there were a lot of moments when a technique - like let's say shiho nage - were NOT exceuted properly by me or one of our students - the effect was horrible - it immediately went from a painless experience to an very painful and sometimes even death threatening situation for uke(the training partner) - it was often close to brake his neck or similar. It was very clear to us as young Aikidoka, that it was VERY important to excecute all these techniques in a very controlled way otherwise the technique can immiadately and suddenly switch to a very old form of it - a form that was used in the battlefields of old japan where it was affordable to kill or disable attackers as fast and as directly as possible. When you look closely you can still see a lot of those deadly techniques in Aikido - but hidden behind a very harmless VERSION of it...hidden in a very intelligent and pieceful version of it! From time to time our sensei showed us those old forms - showed us what ORIGINALLY and really is hidden behind irimi nage, shiho nage and so on....and I must admit it was horrible. He excecuted this old forms veeeeery slowly and with care - but you could still feel the power and you could feel what would happen if he'd excecuted it during a real attack with full force: Your arm, your shoulder, your neck, your wrist or whatever would be involved in this technique as attacker would be immediately broken while falling down to the ground! But this can only be understood by a person that went deep into this Aikido world. All the others just see some guys grabbing their hands and excecuting some "dancing"-like moves. But believe me - it's just the way of approaching those very dangerous techniques by training WITHOUT being harmed or harming someone else in the dojo !
Kenji Nakakura Kenji, you make unfounded assertions - how can you know my background. Shameful display - instead of asking the basis of someone’s claims, you jump to conclusions and make erroneous assertions. Thus, no exchange is possible. Sorry.
I was a fanboy once, I became an aikidoka. It lost me after years. But this training doesn't even look inspiring in any way to me. Where is the love? This video shows just an emotionless, kinda unmotivated bunch of overthetop movement-chains. Even the students during warm up seemed bored. Maybe I get this totally wrong. Maybe the video just didn't catch any intensity. But for me these are just some throw-in techniques, presented by a teacher, who is just a someone depending on his ancestors. No heart. No effectiveness - as far as Aikido can even deliver it.

There are Dynamic strikes, chokes, and breaks in Aikido most teachers have a basic understanding of but never apply beyond a shadowy expression that never gets due practice, and if you dont practice it, you won't do it.

Oh boy
The problem with aikido is not enough resistance training now i studied aikido for about 4 months and i have nothing against it
What do you mean with resistance ? Can you give me an explanation ?
I wouldn't train aikido for self-defence unless you have a teacher with a radically different training methodology. As you can see in this video, the head of the mainline doesn't teach techniques with resistance or from realistic attacks. As the Aikikai's website states, "The goal of Aikido training is not perfection of a step or skill, but rather improving one's character according to the rules of nature." In other words it doesn't aim to teach anything practical except character development.

bujindork Not tough, just realistic.
You don't understand what is aikido. Aikido works by forming physical harmony with the assailant. That is the secret to aikido's effortless throwing. For all the energy you use to resist, it is the aikido guy's job to conform oneself to the rhythm of your energy.
People who know nothing of Aikido are the ones who always judge it.
That's why it works so well in MMA.......

An example of a similar attack is an ice pick grip with a knife. Or a swing of a weapon.

Yes, a true believer - certainly unable to see reality.
Kenji Nakakura
Kenji, you make unfounded assertions - how can you know my background. Shameful display - instead of asking the basis of someone’s claims, you jump to conclusions and make erroneous assertions. Thus, no exchange is possible. Sorry.
