      Exactly what I was thinking, I was thinking that the things in the prequel were testing the best strategies to beat mankind and then recording those into the dog. So in the original, they replicate everything because they know that is a defect and shortcoming so they end up with the problem in the original. In the end, I think that every time infection happens some memories and information considered important are transferred but not all info.

      It couldn't replicate inorganic parts, i.e. things that aren't part of our bodies (the arm-brace was just free-floating outside of the not yet assimilated body of Henrik, and the crew of the second station never even checked for fillings).
      The reason why the Norris-Thing had a heart attack was because it replicated him exactly as he was.

      Like with all known life; if you successfully cause sufficient damage to its DNA with, for example, radiation it might lose its normal, healthy functioning, preventing it from correctly doing what it normally does.
      Of course, it could circumvent the degradation of its entire body if it managed to avoid being incinerated by the blasts and have any remaining healthy cells start killing off the damaged ones and expelling irradiated materials, but unless it can find enough nutrients to replace the discarded cells this would ruin its disguise.

      Yeah, things absolutely are _not_ intelligent. They can mimic humans and use their memories, but that's totally limited to "flamethrower bad. blood tests bad. radio bad. destroy them."
      I dig this video anyway, because it's really well thought out as, like. An AU or something. But actual Things are just instinctual predators with about the same intellect as, say, a xenomorph.
      Smart enough for you to say "...Clever girl.", but not smart enough to criticize it for "using someone as stupid as Juliette who couldn't even clean up after herself or get Kay alone earlier". That's not Juliette-thing NOR Juliette's fault.
      Juliette isn't stupid. The Thing is. Every other Thing was dumb as fuck and blew its cover, but for some reason this channel only singled out Juliette as "having no intellect" while the other Things got excuses like "chose the wrong plan" or "was too weak and HAD to transform in front of everyone".
      Not even joking, I typed out that last paragraph there because it bothered me so much. Why did this channel even do that? It's so weird!

    • @urippe
      @urippe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

They literally do nothing to show that they want bigger "things" lol. But just surviving and using other things to put their own selves out of harm's way but end up being stupid. They really don't have a purpose for even living they're just some disease or something tbh. Like they really don't have anything else going for them it's just existing for themselves

    This was probably already mentioned by a few other people in the comments, but you can't actually infect people with only a few cells. Fuchs in the 1st movie stated that the infection has to be done through violent means (forcibly fusing large amount of cells together) for it to replicate someone. That's where the whole "ripped clothing" things come from in the first movie. The wiki on the movie also confirms this.
    Now there isn't any good reason given for it other than plot device, as it would be way too easy if a simple touch or sneeze would infect everyone, humans wouldn't even have a chance to begin with. But yeah that throws a bunch of these ideas on how to win as The Thing out of the window.

    When it assimilates a person it gets access to their memories as it replicates their brain. If your best friend was in there, could you appeal to its humanity? If it assimilated enough people, or very kind people, could the Thing be influenced by latent human value systems in its being?
    If I were assimilated, could my love for my family stop it from killing them?

    Film theory time: What if the Thing was a Hivemind instead of individual minds? That would mean that it would actually have a more difficult time telling who was who, and as such panicking easier. While typically Hiveminds are larger than a handful of people, when you're an assimilating and stealthy monster, you'd probably have a difficult time processing and analyzing all the new memories that are flooding into the Hivemind. This could be a viable excuse as to why it does stupid things, like transforming. It could also explain why it would know where the ship is, how to use it, etc.

    I've always had the opinion just based on its esthetics and story telling that, The Thing was super infectious within the body but wasn't super at transmission. That it didn't spread airborne , that it didn't easily spread through skin easily and that's why hostile attacks were effective. Much like in general something like Ebola or HIV is highly infectious but doesn't transmit like measels. The doctor seemed most concerned about food for example , not telling people to wear gas masks. If it spread like measels well then good guys lost day one.
