  • Throughout her career, Alicia has been an advocate for women and girls in film, using her media presence to address issues of gender inequality in one of the world's most visible industries. In her TEDxSanJuanIsland talk, Alicia presents research and personal experiences as a woman in the entertainment industry to highlight the underrepresentation of #GirlsInFilm.
    Alicia Malone is a film reporter, critic, TV host, writer, and all around movie geek, appearing on Access Hollywood, E!, MTV, AMC Theaters, Fandango, Afterbuzz TV, BiteSize TV, IGN, Reelz, EPIX, Australia’s Today Show, to name a few.
    Alicia travels the world to cover film festivals including Cannes, Toronto, Sundance, SXSW and Comic-Con, and has interviewed nearly every movie star you could name, even hugging all the hot male ones, and Oprah. Hey, she’s only human.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    Even though I watched this when it first aired, I've been waiting for it to get uploaded to see it again. Alicia just does an amazing job at shedding light on some things that most people don't often think about, but probably should and she does it in a way that's both informative and entertaining. And that's not something a lot of people could do with a topic like this.

    We all know firsthand how hard it is to give a speech and even harder still to make it good. +AliciaMalone you are a woman that makes me feel better about my love of film and letting it be a part of me. Women in film need to be like the diversity in film needs to be changed and while i am male i can see that women need to be payed just as much if not sometimes more for their work. Thank you and great talk.

    Excellent speech. I agree that conversation is going to be very important, and I'm glad to know that they are happening. I sometimes fear that conversation and debate, (especially on important topics such as this,) are a dying breed, but it's people like you who remind me that it's alive and well. I've always respected your opinion on film, and I just wanted to say keep up the good work, keep spreading the hugs, and keep the conversation going. I will be willing to engage in it.

    Male voice here. I love you Alicia, and I love this conversation because it's one that needs to be had. Having said that, I want to poke a hole into the argument just ever so slightly. I was a Film and TV grad. I had absolutely no interest in becoming a director (again, male). I wanted to do producing or PR or advertising or just something else that wasn't necessarily on set. I'm definitely not the only male that thought this way, and out of all the women that were in my classes, I'd say maybe 1 or 2 (out of 25-50 person classes) of these women actually had an interest in directing. Obviously my school can't speak for other schools. But simply looking at the 50-50 split of male to female film school grads and then looking at the split of male-female directors isn't fair, because those aren't correlations to be made. Having said all of that, it still is absolutely ridiculous that only 4.1% of films are directed by women. My argument is simply saying that making the connection between film school graduates and directors isn't exactly fair. Again, huge fan, I think 95% of this is eloquently articulated. I just had a problem with that direct connection of film school grads to directors.

    • @user-vn9sh6hv8r
      @user-vn9sh6hv8r 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You make a fair point wharmon, and there must be some truth in it. The point i would offer is that this is in itself part of the problem of the culture of the industry. Had young girls been brought up believing they could themselves make films, rather than only seeing male directors doing so, there would undoubtedly be more young women seeing themselves in that role, seeing that as a career path, and going for it. That may sound simplistic, but people especially youth, form ideas of what is possible based on what they have seen.
      In Germany now, there is roughly 50/50 gender equality in directing, and more women are stepping up into directing globally, undoubtedly buoyed by conversations such as these and more initiatives to support women in these roles. From my own experience, i had wanted to get into cinematography (3% women in that field). When the opportunity came up to join a practical filmmaking course as part of my film degree, i went along. From the door i was faced with a room full of young men - all Jean-Luc Godard wannabes - and one other woman at the other side of the room. Today, nearly twenty years later, i would react differently, but at the time i was intimidated, i felt that it wasn't a space i was going to get a fair shot; i was also painfully aware of my 'difference' and i turned away.
      I say this because the outcome you see is not always indicative of people's desires - it's reflective of what they believe to be possible, and also what they believe they will have to go through to get what they want (i.e. lots of mansplaining, exclusion, belittling, and harassment - the norm for many women in majority male domains). This is why, when Rachel Morrison gets an Academy Award nomination, it is such a big deal as it suddenly makes visible a career path that many women may have always seen themselves excluded from. I can hear all the haters saying 'diddums, if you want something just go for it', and yes, that's an option - but at what cost? It's easy to say that from a perspective of privilege, and being treated as worthy without having to prove it first.
      I can't speak for the women in your class, or for those *not* in your class, but what you *see* is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to these situations. Until the playing fields are even - in other words, until there has been significant cultural and systemic change - we won't really know for sure who has an interest in directing. But i am 100% sure that it if the field were even, there would be well over 4% of women directing, and many more than 12.6% of directors would be POC also. This disparity is unsustainable; the industry has no choice now but to change - or be changed.

    6:00 ok, I'll take that challenge, from the 2000s alone: Iris, Veronica Guerin, Amelia, La Vie en Rose, Wild, A Mighty Heart, Blind Side, Iron Lady, Danish Girl (Alicia Vickander has a big role in it), Hours, Fur, Sylvia, The Impossible, Calendar Girls, Philomena, Mrs Henderson Presents (I think), North Country, Albert Nobbs......
    You have some good arguments (women not getting directing opportunities), but there's plenty of roles for women, they don't always gross high.

    • @emcats84
      @emcats84 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +okonh0wp It is really disappointing to see that Alicia has been taken in by the third wave feminist narratives about the film industry. I agree about the directing side of things, but women are not always playing stereotypes or bimbos. In fact some of the best roles have been female in the last several decades. It almost came across as if she was talking about 1950's and 60's movies and not now.
      All up this talk was more about her personal experiences and subjective view about the industry whilst trying to project it as the norm. Her outrage at idiotic comments and harassment online is cherry picked and misinformed.Pew research shows in general that men receive more harassment online than women, especially celebrities.

    • @user-vn9sh6hv8r
      @user-vn9sh6hv8r 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You've listed 18 films from well over a decade (Wild is 2014 and The Danish Girl 2015) and yet there have been *hundreds* of films released, the overwhelming majority of which do not have female protagonists, and many do not even have named female characters with speaking parts.
      You proved Alicia's point with your comment. It's been two years since you wrote this comment, I really hope your perspective has been changed by the facts since then.
