  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. TEDxYouth@Manchester is proud to present its 6th TEDxYouth conference on Wednesday 5th November 2014. Our event is presented to 450 post 16 students from The Fallibroome Academy in Macclesfield, UK and to over 150 invited students from local schools. We live stream our conference around the world and our theme is ‘Reset’ and the exciting programme includes brilliant speakers, and stunning student performances.
    Holly Baxter is the 25 year old co-founder and editor of The Vagenda, an online media satire magazine for women, as well as author of the Vagenda book, which came out earlier this year. She is also a columnist for the Guardian and a freelance journalist for a number of other national publications. She is the previous resident of an airing cupboard.
    About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    SHAME on all you people who are picking on her . Get over yourselves! All she did was trying to do was make a point on women's self confidence ...which was all about how media is making women feel bad about themselves no matter what, starting at a very young age. She may have picked a poor example....but geeezzz. She is doing a lot more then the likes any of you. You're like a herd of sheep....going after a small tidbit of grass and missing the bloody pasture! "TRY AND STAY FOCUSED ON THE ISSUE!"

    She's right. Those magazines and ads are disgusting, but I think people ascribe too much blame and power to the manufacturers of this swill. If no one bought them, these mags and ads would go away in a year. They are exploiting flaws and insecurities that are inside of us. They aren't creating them. Cosmo and Playboy outsell The Economist because people are shallow and horny. The mags are a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself.

    Corporations don't care about social issues. What they put out is what gives them a financial return. Of course some individuals may go off track or be mixed up, but they probably get weeded out over more financially based objective professionals. I've seen an old boy sexist man, who made his own rules replaced by a more professional women. It was a bitter pill for him to take.

    Regarding the top theme of these comments about this comment: the doughnuts bit. Why isn't it possible for humans to get over things that humans are born with. Men are born with a certain penis size, just like women are born with certain breast size, men with a certain amount of body hair, women with a certain hair color... it is noones fault or desicion. So why don't concentrate on the things that really matter: Mind-sets of people, behavior and all those important bits that can actually be changed for the better.

      My comment was that the human race exists because women have given birth which I believe is a verifiable biological fact.
      The context of that comment was to make the point that, despite the musings of The Fuzz, women HAVE been present during the “hard work of building civilization”, etc.
      Then, as now, there are many different roles that are required to build a functioning society and not all look the same … however … all of them have value.

    Interesting talk. Interesting that you have strong opinions of how women are portrayed in the media and the affects this can have on a person. Interesting that you think having a small penis is an issue for people or should be if your partner has one. I understand what you meant by that comment but if you're going to mention gender equality - it swings both ways (pun intended).

  • @Omegaures
    @Omegaures 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Asides from agreeing, or disagreeing with the message (which is quite sound overall), it doesn't address the cause of the problem, only the symptoms! If someone likes chips and you want him to stop eating them and to stop him you take away the chips, as soon as you aren't there an he has access to the chips he'll start eating them again! Addressing the cause will stop him!
    Instead of mocking the market's responsiveness to this kind of advertisement and, instead, analysing the effects of the lack of certain parental figures, or their standards and aptitudes in the developmental process of the child would allow to target the real problem, the cause of "Everything that’s wrong with women in the media".
    I'm not saying this is the only cause, but whichever the causes may be, it is there that people need to work, not on the effects, for the same reason that a painkiller doesn't cure diseases!
    Oh and to Edit a point it: This may, or may not have to do with feminism, but has little to do with equal rights!

      Besides the argument that all the CEOs are men doesn't hold up. I know a lot of girly and female magazines, made only by women. It's even hard to get a job there as a man. Guess what? All those magazines follow the same pattern:
      BOYS-STUFF TO MAKE YOU LOOK BETTER - DIETARY ADVICE - COOKING RECIPES - HOW TO MANIPULATE BOYS - CLOTHING TIPS TO HIDE YOUR FLABBY PARTS - MAKE UP and RANDOM PSYCHOLOGICAL MUMBO JAMBO.

    How is this exclusive to women? Everybody is targeted male or female, old or young, in magazines and in any other media outlet. How is this a women and not a cultural problem I'm not sure, but everyone is targeted, however not everyone is effected. Self-esteem is short for Self-estimation. Key word here being "self". If you look for other sources for validation, such as media image, they are everywhere and hardly apply to women only. I wish this was not based on the gender but culture. Because its a cultural issue not a gender issue.

    It's a little disturbing how even TED talks continue to under represent minority women & women of color in these presentations. Progressive policy is to lend a voice to the underprivileged & the disenfranchised. Yet, the very women in Western society who still suffer the most from conservatism & the religious right, and who are lacking in social mobility and financial independence most often, are time & again finding themselves sidelined in favor of upper-middle class white women.
    In the year 2015, something about this mentality is becoming very worrying.

      Eirik Magnus Larssen So do you actually have proof that minorities and women are applying to give TED talks and are being turned over due to discrimination?

    • @eirikmagnuslarssen4242
      @eirikmagnuslarssen4242 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ophelia Bloom
      Social scientists have extensively documented the discrimination of women of color in Western media outlets in favor of upper-middle class white females. The most chilling example of the phenomenon was uncovered by a Canadian team of social anthropologists, who were studying the representation of minorities in Western media. They ascertained that women of color who go missing receive on average 27 times (!) less news coverage than missing white women do. Social scientists have since come to formally describe this virulent and systematic discrimination of minority women in the Western media as "Missing White Woman Syndrome". The phenomenon is prevalent in Western media outlets to such an extent that it was deemed to have sufficient relevance to merit its own own article on the English Wikipedia pages. I invite you to reflect on that.
      My remarks here are intended as an indictment of this institutionalized discrimination in the Western media at large, and to force debate about this issue. One can reasonably assume that either a sympathy for or a genuine belief in White Supremacy politics is involved behind this phenomenon, which is reason enough for me to act. Also, when social scientists present people with well-documented evidence about a level of discrimination in popular media that brings to mind South Africa during the days of Apartheid, and their first reflex is to start shooting the messenger, complete with vitriol and hatred, what does that tell us?

    • @katiesmith8501
      @katiesmith8501 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Eirik Magnus Larssen Don't bother trying to explain. People who say shit like "Herp, do you have documented evidence that racism is a thing, derp?" have NO interest in what you have to say because it doesn't validate their racist but no-I'm-totally-not-racist-because-I-have-black-friends bullshit. As to the ridiculous point your heckler was trying to make, even if there are no black women applying or organizing Ted Talks, that still speaks volumes on the limits we put on women of color in the first place....but white supremacy is a nice mindset if you can talk yourself into it I suppose. I'm with you Eirik!

    • @opheliabloom8321
      @opheliabloom8321 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Katie Smith I didn't ask for evidence that 'racism is a thing', you moron, I was speaking specifically about TED talks, because accusing an entire organization of holding racist attitudes is a strong claim that requires proof.
      And no, if there are no black women applying for or organizing TED talks, it doesn't speak volumes about shit because an organization can't include people who don't WANT to be included. The only alternative is treating black people like special needs children by creating special integration programmes which imply that they have to imitate whites to be truly 'equal'.

    "Me and my friend decided to set up this online magazine..." is a quote taken from about the minute point of this talk. What if she set up the magazine by herself...would she have said "Me decided to set up this online magazine..."? No? Then why say "Me" (object of the action) when "I" (subject of the action) is the correct word?
    I listened to the whole talk, but almost stopped when she made this grammar mistake because her credibility lessened.

      No, I figured out how to stay out of the friend zone. But most men haven't. I was just commenting on what goes on generally. Women want rich guys, men want attractive women. Make up, hair styles, certain clothing which accentuates women's appearance, will increase the number of men who are attracted to a woman. And despite the desire of so many women to have men not care about what a woman looks like, it isn't going to happen, because we've evolved to find certain things more attractive than others. A few of these things, a 70% waist to hip ratio, healthy looking skin, hair, good teeth, clear complexion, all things that coincidentally coincide with health and the ability to have healthy offspring.

  • @HoppyBunny.
    @HoppyBunny. 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    After listening to her, I am more affirmed that a world under feminist totalitarianism, it would be a cold, barren, humorless, oppressive, bland, uncreative dark world. It must be convenient to blame men for the choices and decisions women make for themselves that sometimes don't work out. She's complaining about petty aesthetics no one with the ability to think for themselves allows themselves to be emotionally crippled by.
    Its interesting how feminist have no problem with constant images of men getting assaulted in the genitals for comedy or fathers in endless sitcoms portrayed as either pedophiles, incompetent, absent, feckless and intellectually deprived. Yet you don't see men and fathers carry on as if it's an absolute true statement about men.
    Oh, and there is absolutely zero observable evidence that feminism PRACTICES gender equality. Entitlement is not equality.

    • @HoppyBunny.
      @HoppyBunny. 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I would be surprised that any had anything sympathetic to say about men in any format. in practice, feminism believes the primary endeavor of men, the world and the universe should revolve around exclusive deference to women. Broadly speaking, the only consistent thing feminism has to say about men is we're rapist, abusers and oppressors, And only feminism and feminists can set the standard for how men should live and exist, as well as truly believe, only feminism is so completely absolutely the expression of higher morality and ethics that it and it alone is qualified to define and determine the lived experiences and identities of the male gender more than the men who live them.

If she were dressed in shiny, skintight synthetic crap with her boobs pushed up to her neck, had on stiletto heels and tons of lip gloss (let's not forget twerking), yeah, that would undermine her message.
