  • Since the 1940s only 5% of all major films have been directed by women. In 2016 the women in film revolution has arrived and it begins with you.
    Naomi McDougall Jones is an award-winning writer, actress, and producer based in New York City. She wrote, produced, and starred in the award-winning feature film, IMAGINE I’M BEAUTIFUL, for which she received three Best Actress Awards and “The Don Award” for Best Independently Produced Screenplay of 2014. Naomi was additionally one of the writers for Amazon’s new TV series THE NEW YORKER PRESENTS, which premiered at Sundance. Naomi has become an advocate and speaker for bringing gender parity to cinema. She is the Founder of The 51 Fund, an investment equity fund focused on financing films written, directed, and produced by women. More at www.naomimcdougalljones.com.

    "There will be an entire industry constantly telling you that your stories don't matter, and we need you to make them anyway." Before you comment on this TEDTalk in a negative way, please think about this sentence. Everyone's stories matter. She is simply highlighting that some stories get more stage time than others. If you think your life, your story matters, then so should Naomi's. Naomi's talk is smart, inoffensive, and rooted in her personal experiences as an actress, writer, and producer.

      I think the issue comes with representation. When I try to make a story, I do not represent a story. I present it and this ends up being, not just healthier but better received. It's not that someone's story is not important or more important than. It is on how to you connect with your audience. There are stories that remain classic, because of archetypes used that connect with cultures ACROSS the ages. I believe that this is THE story - a story that everyone can connect with, and the way to go about it. Take heed, I don't mean you cannot represent someone's story and experiences, but when you focus too much on their gender identity, their skin color and other superficial things that don't make the full extent of a human being, you miss the point of the story. You focus too much on the things that represent rather than on presenting a story.
      Probably why videogames are winning over movies, and why manga is winning over comics. Probably why Birds of Prey did so bad, why the last Terminator did as bad and why Ghostbuster 3 was lackluster (though I would argue there is more to this one that made it fail). And why Sonic did so well, why Wonder Woman has done INCREDIBLE - directed by a woman btw. Focus on the story. Present the story. And make characters more than their gender. Pick directors because they're good at what you want to present, not because they have this or this other gender. Make movies because you want to tell a story, not because you want women to be better. There are talented men directors who definitely know intense drama and there are women directors who definitely know their amazing action scenes... If we keep splitting this up, it won't end well and films - and stories - will just become watered-down versions of what they could have been. Exclusionary views don't help anyone.

      I'm of a simpler mindset. I want to see good films. Have a good story. If it was or not directed by a woman? I don't think that should be the important part. A man can make a good story about women just as a woman can make a good story about men... And thinking differently excludes creativity from all sides to come in.

    THANK YOU! I am ecstatic to hear all of the things that she is doing for women in film. As a filmmaker myself it is refreshing and wonderful to be heard. This conversation isn't about men or why women aren't equally a part of media, it's about creating more roles for women to have a VOICE, so we can tell our stories. Talent doesn't exist in gender.

  • @LesleyShannon

    What a wonderful talk! I love how it isn't just about providing more opportunity for women in film, but about the difference providing those opportunites can make in our society as a whole. Film and media impact so much of our day to day life, and we don't even realize it. This talk brought that to the forefront. Bravo!!

    I hate feminist bullshit but this actually wasnt as bad as I expected. She didnt go into the whole "all men are evil, hollywood is evil, you are a sexist" narrative.
    There was a little bit of "hollywood is holding us down" which I partially disagree with. But she does indeed have a point that film making is a vastly male dominated profession, and that she would like to see more women getting into film making. Instead of arguing for special treatment, she essentially said "if you want things to change, get your ass out there and do it!"
    I am not a fan of modern third wave feminism. But I think this woman did a fairly good job with this presentation.

    • @BB-xm6hy

      NDNguitarguy . yeah she was actually good at her presentation!!!

    • @Aschvampir
      @Aschvampir 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the latter part was good but her stats just seem fishy to me. Not to say they are wrong, but I would like to see that split into genre and maybe even budget. A cheap horror film for 1mio that makes just 20mio. might be considered a flop when looking at the last number but when we put that into perspective (20 times the budget as income) it becomes much more profitable.
      Now I am going to be a huge sexist pig and assume that many female writers/directors/etc can be found working in Romance, where a film can be shit out for nothing and be profitable since 10mio is a lot of money when compared to nothing.^^
      But overall I didn't mind her talk, she wasn't whining or throwing shit, she actually did something. Although it has sexist tendencies^^

    Great speech! I'm just moviegoer but I have noticed that issue. I always look how many women are involved in movie project which I'm intrested. I'm angry at movies where female characters are just for nice smile and naked body. I hate films where nudity is not justified... (and why do we see so little of male nudity?) I'm glad that more and more women in Hollywood start talking about this issue!

  • @jennifertownsend4200
    @jennifertownsend4200 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is the best talk I have ever heard on the issues explicated here. Perhaps what is most disturbing is how entrenched the issues are - how women are silenced and told to 'Be careful where you voice the truth. It will get you in trouble. Suck it up. It's just the way it is.' In fact, it's beyond disturbing - it's infuriating, it's unjust and wholly unacceptable.

    I'm guessing the dislike bar is due to the title... but I'd say the talk itself is very good and informative - and it's true, if you have 50% of movie graduates, why is there a leaky pipeline? :)
    We see the same in science, but it is slowly beginning to shift, but there is great value in knowing these statistics and questioning if perhaps we do unconsciously decide someone is better at a job than another based on their gender or their appearance or their age, rather than their actual skills. We all do it but we hate to admit it :p

    Loved the talk. What bothers me is that it seems that TED released it recently on its website as a "newest talk" just because of the recent news regarding Weinstein and the others. They know that people will show interest on it because of the news and so they will be able to show more adds. Why didn't they feature this ted talk on their website before? Because back then nobody cared? This topic was as relevant then as it is today and yet they kind of silenced it by not promoting it more. Shame on you, TED!

    She talks as if men and women live in different universes, as if they don’t share children, finances, beds, professional goals, values, traditions, etc, as if they don’t share profound love for each other. Yes, give talented women all the opportunities they deserve but not by diminishing talented men or creating the illusion that men and women live in alternative universes. Great movies have universal appeal, beloved by both men and women because these creations speak to our deep humanity. The key is create equal opportunity for talent regardless of gender to bring to the screen truly engaging art and entertainment that speaks to what we share as human beings on this small planet.

    • @BB-xm6hy
      @BB-xm6hy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Daulton Young She never said to watch a movie JUST because it's directed by a woman. She simply said that you should look up some female directors and see if there are any films you are interested in by female filmmakers. I watch about 1-2 films a day. Even if you only watch 1 a week, you're telling me that you couldn't find 1 out of them 4 that was by a woman and you would enjoy it. If there are not films by women that are good then of course she's being ridiculous. But, obviously there are. And, they deserve just as much recognition if they're just as good. Check out Sofia Coppola. amazing director.

    • @nandafprado
      @nandafprado 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe she used poor wording, yeah it totally does seem like she is telling us to watch a movie just because it had females involved but if you look at moviesbyher.com jesus a lot of great movies had women involved and I had absolutelly no idea. Also their are mostly indie movies (as a indie movie fanatic who actually watches an indie movie at least once a month I recognise them easily) she should have framed as "watch more movies that are poorly or not even at all advertised" as in "dont only go to the cinema to see movies that you've seen a trailer for, frequent more, explore more (but dont go to franchise movie theaters, go to those who present indie content)" but I guess that seemed too long and looks out of context for the presentation. Hollywood has been the same story much more than indie movies, basically the same hero story of always.

    TED is really persistent. Can't you guys take a hint. No means no. lol If you want sexism, and yes sexism is not exclusive to men, read romance novels, written mostly by women for women. Its the women's equivalent of Die Hard or Indiana Jones. Pure fiction meant to indulge women fantasy, much like action movies were for men. Before today's version of action movies where charachters are male hero played by females actors. As for romance, novels... “Readers understand that the books celebrate female power. In the romance novel, the woman always wins. With courage, intelligence and gentleness she brings the most dangerous creature on the earth, the human male, to his knees.” ― Jayne Ann Krentz --- The author of over 50 consecutive New York Times bestsellers, JAYNE ANN KRENTZ writes romantic-suspense in three different worlds: Contemporary (as Jayne Ann Krentz), historical (as Amanda Quick) and futuristic (as Jayne Castle). There are over 30 million copies of her books in print. ....and yet I don't see men on TED every other day complaining about wanting to write romance novels. Give it a rest for god sake. No one is oppressing you and you are annoying everyone with fictional narratives and victim stories.

    if you qualified for the job, you are more likely to get the job. if you can't get the job you want, create it yourself. What happened to the time when your gender didn't matter but what you do, do matters. Bet she doesn't care that sewer workers, garbage workers, etc etc are mostly men.
    Also women are not discourage to create films, the interest to do so are with mostly men. And that should not be seen as a bad thing nor as a good thing.

    Maybe have the leads in your screenplay make realistic choices instead of the over dramatized bullish you force down peoples throats then whine about the patriarchy keeping you down.

    WTF... I wrote a female dominated film it comes naturally to a mommas boy. My mom owns her own company and came with nothing to this country: USA.

    Why do people just asume that others refuse to watch a movie just because a woman wad involved in the making of it? Please, you are extremely ignorant if you think that is the case.

    Where are all the exiting and interesting TEDx talks that I subscribed for? Why every single time when I open my mail and see a new TEDx vid, it's either in spanish or some feminist bullshit. Time to unsub I guess.

      djt6fan Clearly you're just ignorant. this was a great video. just becausd it was feminist you're disregarding it? jesus..

    • @djt6fan
      @djt6fan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, clearly. I mean, how can I not see through all the irrelevant bullshit she's complaining about? I mean, shit, she's complaining about what roles are available to her in a movie industry, while women elsewhere are still getting stoned to death. Jesus, poor her, first-world-problem-induced PTSD. Yes, how did you know that I disagree with her just because her mum is an enraged feminist?

      djt6fan she's not complaining only about what roles are available to her .... and she is definitely not the only one who is facing this sarcasm.
      the matter is just that we can't get a right platform to explain the issue and the right audiance.!!!!!!!

      Did you even watch the video? She actually made A very good case. Her message was "get your ass out there and work for the change you want".
      I hate modern feminism, but this woman did a fantastic job with this presentation.

    the ROI argument is invalid.
    Male production teams are better and thus cost more. Big budget films have lower ROI but make 100s of millions of dollars off of a 10-50 million dollar investment.
    Female production teams are worse and cost less. But even if you watch a shitty movie, you still paid to see it. Its really not hard to make more than a million dollars on a film that costed 100K.
    So even though those films made by men have lower ROI, they actually make more money in total. It makes no sense to suggest that films made by women make more money as all of the highest grossing films were produced by male directors.
    By that demographic that showed that less women make it to the big budget studios, that means more women are in the low budget studios that have higher ROI.
    These higher ROI low budget studios are carefully watched by the investors as they're high risk investments, thus increasing the probability of success.
