Best video I've seen on planing. Anyone remember wood shop? This is the type of shit you used to learn in school. Valuable skills. Long gone are those days.

Thanks, that's very timely as I have a body to prepare for gluing in the next week or so! I'm not yet very good with a plane so I bought a sheet of thick glass that I've stuck some sandpaper onto, and that has been very useful for sanding things flat too, particularly pieces that are too small or thin to plane.

Love the comment on making sure to retract the blade before flattening the plane base at the end. Obvious to most...but still...there would be the one person that isn't familiar with these tools.
I am trying to plane a wood blank that I purchased. Could you please tell me witch plane is the best choice for this... Thanks
I just bought a hand planer, and am learning how to use it. One of the issues I'm having is occasionally it will make chatter marks or tear out. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I adjusted the blade so it protrudes evenly across the sole, and is barely exposed. I trued the sole up, and cleared the throat due to poor machining from the manufacturer. I have not attempted to sharpen the blade at all. The plane I was using was a 6" Buck Bros.
Looks like a Bailey #6 with Hock iron & chip breaker.. Could be a #7??

Do you level the chip breaker so that the edge sits perfectly flush to the top of the blade? The store bought ones seem to have inconsistencies in them.
@A1Base yup you'll want to make sure the chipbreaker's edge sits flush to the back of the iron. If you don't you'll find that you can get a shavings stuck there which will eventually gum up the mouth and usually at the worst times. It isn't a MAJOR problem (you'll just need to clear it occasionally so it eats time) but it is easily fixable through some time with sandpaper and/or stones or with a careful hand and a vice if there is a twist to the chipbreaker. When you are done with your modifications make sure to hold it up to a light to see if there is a gap. Do note this changes a bit depending on the type of chip breaker, the one shown in the video looked like an aftermarket replacement rather than the typical Stanley-Bailey pattern chipbreaker which bends a bit to meet the back of the iron as you tighten the screw.

No need to force the plane like you were doing.
Where do I get such a plane? It looks similar to a german "Raubank" but the blade is at the other end.
i want to add that when you realise you are out of square it's more efficient to plane only the higher side not just shifting the weight. I shift the plane so that the blade only take a 1/4 off the piece and the weight of the plane that is off the piece will set that 1/4 to 90 and I just move the plane by an 1/8 inch or so to bring that 90 side down to the other side of the piece so I don't wast material. I prefer to use a narrow scrap of wood to check if the projection of the blade is square you might have introduce this error in your piece while making adjustment we will in this case never know witch lead me to my third point check your square before you work on it to start planing efficiently and save time and material. Those are the tips I learn by using the tool I hope it will help someone. Great basic hand plane mini-torial

Would also have liked to have seen how tight the cap iron should be.
+FitAndGaming not very, if you have to put work into the cap iron spring it is probably too tight. I tend to set it so that the blade will move under pressure, ie use and then tighten one more turn. The blade will stay set where you need it but the cap iron won't be so tight as to distort the plane and pull the sole out of true.. B

To see if its flat, run a metal ruler down its length whilst holding up to the light, if its letting through light its not flat !
Metal rulers are never straight. :) Check one against a proper straight edge and see.
