  • Welcome to Crimson Guitars th-cam.com/users/CrimsonC... and welcome back to Crimson Guitars and another Mini-Torial with Luthier Tom.
In this episode, Tom demonstrates how to sharpen his favourite tool, the scraper.
    Chapter
    0:00 Introduction
0:13 For this you will need a burnisher made from hard steel
0:34 If you have an edge on the scraper -
1:19 Into the vice and file the edge
3:01 Back to the burnisher to create the edge
    3:41 The important bit!!
4:40 The goal is to create shavings.
5:44 Dust as opposed to shavings = rinse and repeat, reset edge
    6:25 Conclusion

I struggled with scrapers a long time before I understood what happens there. I just didn't have a good enough burnisher. Great tool for difficult grain.

I got a real Paul Sellers vibe from this video, which is a very good thing! I almost forgot I was watching Tom, and not Paul! Nice collection of scrapers! A little tool porn action there, nice! The kitten mug is adorable, guys!

Thank you. It is my favourite tool for carved tops, neck heels, volutes etc. I have been struggling to get a nice sharp edge. Your video is just perfect. I made a few bumps the way you decribed, nice tip to avoid that.

Nice job, Tom! It gets easier in front of the camera the more you do it! I'd love to see a full tutorial on how you got the stunning finish on your Master Build with just Crimson oil and wax, please!

Excellent tutorial. I've found over the years that a lot of my woodworking friends would use dull scrapers, or would not use scrapers because they had issues with them (I think their issues were that the scrapers were dull). Like all tools, sooner or later they need some tender loving care. You did a great job Tom. Regards, Solomon

Nice one Tom. Good to see you getting a solo spot for a change! Shame you dropped the burnisher at the end when you had been doing so well :)
