One of the best parts for me on rewatching the scene with Doc and Ringo in the saloon is that you realise Doc was studying Ringo the whole time. He knew from that moment how fast Ringo was and that he was faster. Also he exactly mimics Ringos every movement with the cup showing just how observant he is without giving away his own speed on the draw. Such a good scene.

@@RhetoricalThrill Historically speaking, very likely true. Doc Holiday was very intelligent & well educated. He was incredibly good at poker because he was able to count cards better than most, even when drunk. Many historians believe Val Kilmer gave a very accurate portrayal, including Holiday's unique accent.

My dad introduced me to a man named Thell Reed who was the gun coach for Hollywood and a quick-draw artist. He told me about a movie he was working on in Arizona called Tombstone. I asked him who is in it, and as he started naming off the cash I got progressively more excited as many of them were my favorites. I had never before or since looked forward to a movie coming out as much as I did this one. The wait was almost unbearable, but then a friend got passes to see an advanced preview screening. I was wildly excited, and we all rushed down to the theater only to be turned away because they already had enough people in our age range. They told us to pick any other movie in the theater, and my friends settled on The Nightmare Before Christmas. I'm told that it's a good movie, and I know many people who love it. But I was so infuriated by missing out on my movie that I didn't enjoy a single second. We could have watched Casablanca or Citizen Kane and I still would have hated it. I should consider giving that movie another chance since I've had thirty or so years to calm down.

On a side note, this movie has been hailed as the most historically accurate portrayal of Wyatt Earp's days in Tombstone, Arizona despite the artistic liberties. Some of the "facts" were not facts at all, such as "the Cowboys" being organized crime and wearing red sashes as identifying marks, but overall, the film paints an exceptionally accurate picture of the events as history recorded them. Most of the town as portrayed in the movie is still there including the Birdcage theater, Wyatt Earp's Oriental saloon and more. The town paper still has reproductions of the trial and other accounts of Wyatt. Wyatt Earp III played a cowboy that killed at the OK corral gunfight. People still wear guns and do reenactments of gun fights on the streets of Tombstone. Every few years someone gets shot in a gun fight in modern day Tombstone. The Clanton's and Earp's still dislike each other.

One of the best westerns ever, and definitely the best of the modern westerns. Val Kilmer was amazing. Doc had all the best lines. I think my favorite was when they're getting ready to go to the OK Corral and Wyatt tells Doc he doesn't need to come, and Doc replies "That's a hell of a thing for you to say to me!" Wyatt is Doc's best (and only) friend and would do anything for Wyatt, and was insulted that Wyatt would even suggest that Doc would turn his back on him when he was needed.
That scene where Wyatt wades into the river really happened, according to written accounts of the time.
If you liked the action of this movie, another great western you'd probably like is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) with Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Some other great westerns are High Noon (1952), Once Upon a Time in the West (1969), and the original Magnificent Seven (1960)

So they were seen by the locals as "carpetbaggers" and resented.

Historians generally agree that this is by far the most historically accurate version of any of the movies that have been made about this story.
For what it's worth, Wyatt and Mattie were never actually married. She was a hopeless drug addict, and the relationship was all but over by the time they arrived in Tombstone.

Also people need to remember the Earp were not good guys either. They were some time on one side or the other of law. They were fighting the cowboys for control of the town in real life. One of the brothers was in the town first and he saw a pimp at times. In real life after the gun fight more of the towns people sided with the cowboys than the Earps. Even Wyatt's common law wife Maddie was said to have been a lady of the evening that either Wyatt met or at one time wormed for him? Dig deeper to find the real history of the west.

But I have watched over a dozen reactions to this movie and not one where they know this is "mostly" a true story with actual people from history. In the days before the internet, I grew up reading a lot. My favorite genre to read as a child was true american west history. The other movie you was talking about in the beginning, Wyatt Earp, is worth a watch. It gets overshadowed by this movie understandably, but it is a well made movie starring Kevin Costner and you get a more Earp family aspect.

The actual history is incredibly complex and there are arguments to this day about most of the individuals and events. The shoot out at the OK Coral was probably somewhat close to what happened. Improbably the shoot out at the creek with Curly Bill did involve Wyatt miraculously surviving a hail of gunfire unscathed though the exact details are somewhat different. Wyatt and at least one of his brothers were pimps at different points in their lives. Reportedly Mattie and some of the Earp wives were prostitutes. It wasn't completely unusual for women who worked as protitutes to end up married and community leaders, not standard for sure but not that unusual either. Wyatt came to fame due to the shoot out at the coral and later a biography by Stuart Lake - Frontier Marshall that was made into a movie in 1934. Probably also didn't hurt that many actors and directors in Hollywood sought out and knew Wyatt before his death in 1929.

    Bill Paxton: That's right.
    Five star edit!
Your knowledge of actors is impressive. I was particularly impressed that you know Thomas Hayden Church's name. You must've grown up watching "Wings" too.
"It's not revenge he's after...it's a reckoning." I think Doc means it's unimpassioned and calculated. Wyatt's not killing the cowboys for personal reasons, but instead to send an unmistakable message that their shit will no longer be tolerated.
    "Wyatt Earp is my friend."
"Hell, I got lots of friends."
    "I don't."
I always loved that interaction, because I think it says a lot about Doc. And I don't think it says that Doc isn't good at making friends. I think it says that Doc is very particular about who he lets in his inner circle. He would rather be intensely loyal to a few people, than just well acquainted with several.
Doc and Wyatt knew that Wyatt couldn't beat Johnny Ringo, because Johnny's quicker with the draw. But Doc knew he could. So he tricked Wyatt in giving him a star so that he could kill Johnny Ringo for him.
Yeah, the women in this movie were pretty worthless. That's my biggest complaint too. But eh, whatever...Val Kilmer was impossibly charming, so I can look past it.

Maddie was, like many people back then, an accidental addict. Laudlum was a combination of cocaine, opium and alcohol. It was used to treat everything from headaches to menstral cramps to war wounds.
People didn't know about addiction, but they soon found out they couldn't live without it.
I disagree with your assertion that Maddie was prissy. What she was, was hurt. She wasnt blind to Wyatt's attraction to Sarah, and she turned cold towards him.
But I DO agree with you about Sarah, who later went by Josephine. I don't find it romantic that she actively got between Wyatt and Maddie, who was troubled but loved him deeply. Anyone who has been in Maddie's shoes can relate.

No historical evidence of hucklebearer. It's just a dumb internet thing that keeps getting repeated.

More truth...Wyatt and Doc had A falling out and were not friends at the end of Doc's life. Doc did not like Wyatt's wife because she was Jewish. In true life Doc Holiday was a very bad raises, bad tempered and a bit of a sycophantic.
