  • It's December and Perch Fishing Master Mark Austin takes us through his approach when catching big Perch! We take a very close look at how this Perch catching machine goes about landing these impressive fish from a range of rivers and stillwaters.
    We look at the tackle and methods that he uses and take a very close look at his favourite lures. He catches fish on both Shads and little Craws, while we talk tactics and techniques. His determination and attitude results in him landing the fish he's after, in this awesome mid winter session.
    A huge thank you to Mark for letting us pick his brains and for sharing all his Perch Fishing secrets!

    I fished with Mark a few weeks back definitely a man who knows his way around a big Perch or 2.
    A great dedicatated Lure Angler and like you said he puts in a lot of effort and sure gets rewarded. We fished in nearly 30mph winds with rain and sleet no monsters but we both got onto some fish and had a great day.

      Well took the advice on today pal, walked miles and moved all the gear and kids several times and ended up with a River Crossens beauty that Gordy the piking pirate Burton himself would be proud of as it was from his local stretch. Had your latest vid in the back of my mind, when it wasnt happening get on the move 👍🏼

    Brilliant video, awesome series!!! Learning a lot from these videos! Still after that 2lb lure caught perch and I'm taking these little gems you dig out from your constant questioning. I absolutely love it!! Never heard of a jika set up in your last video and low pressure from this video are things I'm going to implement and use in my fishing. A question I have that I wouldn't mind getting answered in your next video is how long on a newish venue will you guys spend in a swim whether that's time or casts before you think of changing lures and also moving on. I love learning more about lure fishing and wouldn't mind hearing more details!!!
    Awesome video as always👌🏻

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Don’t be too quick to move swims. Make sure you spend a reasonable amount of time in each. In Winter, you’ll need to fish slower and you’ll spend longer in each swim. Maybe 20-30mins, maybe longer. Don’t assume they’re not there. Try a few different lures. Mark switched lures quite a few times here before moving swims. I would maybe watch this vid again and keep an eye out for this in the future ones too! 👍👍👍👍

    Being new to predator fishing, I've been struggling for bites. Having come across your channel, I now know why - my retrieve is far too quick for these winter months. Also, the lures I'm using aren't really moving across the bottom. The insight from these guys is invaluable, look forward to trying to replicate it on the bank of my local canal soon!

    • @Rose.Of.Hizaki
      @Rose.Of.Hizaki ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending where you are fishing. Its highly recommended that you use thick florocarbon or a thin wire trace just in case of pike and zander. Drennan soft trace or 7 strand is recommended. I personally use 7 strand. You might catch less fish as the perch could get spooked but on the other hand its much safer for the fish and you wont lose a lure unless you hook into a snag.
      If you havent already found out. You do catch a fair few pike when targeting perch. Thats just how it goes.

      No Nick was absolutely perfect asking questions. Nick had to probe him because that angler wasn't letting on too much, he looked very sneaky to me. So you ask more questions to get a clearer understanding, surely! Spot on Nick, but not a great angler to choose for a video in my opinion. He looked very uncomfortable and clearly didn't want to let out too much info.

    @alannevard6993 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's an old video and I enjoyed it but I think a problem with it was the sound. At times you were talking at the same time or he was looking away from the mike and so some words he said were missing.

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback 🙏 If you follow my videos then you’ll know that having another person in the videos is something new for me. I think I was keen to keep them ‘conversational’ but the problem with natural, unscripted conversation is that we (as humans) do sometimes speak at the same time, rather than taking it in turns to talk. However, I do see that sounding quite clumsy in the final edit.
      Another issue here is the shotgun mic. I’m often standing just off screen (as I wanted the guest to be the star of the show), however, this means that I’m closer to the mic than the guest. Maybe gives the impression that I’m raising my voice over the top of theirs. Two lapel mics might be better, or I just need to stand same distance from the mic or spend longer in the edit tweaking the levels to quieten my voice (easier to do IF we’re not speaking at the same time!)
      I think, whilst, I want to keep it conversational I will just need to be mindful of some of the issues above.
      Again, I appreciate your feedback. I’m very focused on trying to create the best content possible for you guys and comments like this really help with that 👍

    Quite interesting that many get into light lure fishing due to the light and minimal gear you need, no smelly baits etc. I got into fly fishing for the same reason, very enjoyable not carting barrows of stuff around you hardly use.. May explain why this style has taken off in the last decade or so. I came back to fishing after a long break and no one did this before, we specimen 'Perchfishers' were very few, now its got to be one of the most popular styles after carping. Great to see that Perch are getting the fame they didn't used to have, but a lot of competition on the 'special' waters now for us oldy traditional perchers. :) its all good though. Also there some scientific debate about atmospheric pressure affecting fish, its proven they cannot sense the change as they are below water basically separated from atmosphere, the swim bladder is not affected, yet many anglers swear by it. Interesting debate still ongoing out here, science versus belief. And besides .. he caught plenty on that 'high pressure' day, its venue and finding fish.

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your thoughts on this 👍 Yes he caught fish but he knows these waters really well. He knows what a decent day looks like and relatively speaking it was fishing poorly. High / low pressure isn’t a debate I’ve ever taken much notice of myself. I go fishing whenever there’s an opportunity to go! But it is an interesting debate. Love fishing light for perch and I do a little fly fishing too. A style of fishing I love. Thanks again for your insightful comments 🙏👍👍

    • @GillmanStudio
      @GillmanStudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lifeonthebank you're welcome mate. If you have ever waded out into deep water with chest waders on. You will notice the tightness at your lower legs and ankles in just a few feet of water. Thats the water pressure, that's what the fish live in. its the perfect test. Your upper body feels the atmospheric pressure, thats what we live in, you yourself can sense the massive difference. They are separate pressured 'environments' and very different. The only link to fish behaviour studies note is likely weather which is influenced by atmospheric pressure as we know. But expecting a fish, 4 feet down to sense the difference between 998 and say 996 and change behaviour just doesn't stack up. I wouldn't use it as a guide but I wouldn't suggest others shouldn't, its up top them, just research it first.

    Low pressure helps, a good presentation helps, knowing good spots help: but the ultimate secret for catching big fish is time on the bank. There’s no substitute for that. An average angler who fishes every day catches more than a top rod with few hours/week to spare.
