I'm a lifelong Braves fan, but that opening - the picturesque scenery, the narration, the music - don't tell me today's is better than this. It was majestic then - and now. It made me want to buy a ticket to see the game in the cold between these two teams.
Proud to say this was the very first Major League baseball game I attended. Being from Nashville Tennessee all we had.....and still have are the AAA Nashville Sounds. I was 13. I got to leave school an hour early to make the 3 and a half hour drive with my dad. We checked into the Clariton Hotel, then went and ate at Gold Star Chili downtown downtown and then caught the game. I was VERY confident as a young Reds fan in a quick 4 game sweep of the Pirates. Of course I was shocked when a guy, coincidentally named Bob "Walk" beat Jose Rijo as they lost 4-3. Happily I'd get that 4 game sweep I was expecting about 2 weeks later when it REALLY mattered, against the "unbeatable"....roided up A's on the biggest stage in the baseball. I can proudly say my father and I went back and were in attendance for games 1 and 2 of the world series as well. We went to game 2 of the NLCS as well and I got to miss a day of school Friday which was extra awesome to go with that game 2 victory lol We checked out a neat little baseball card shop in that downtown plaza area where I begged my dad to buy me HIGHLY overpriced 1960 Topps Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson baseball baseball cards, our Hank and Frank cards as my dad would go on to call em, which I STILL have to this very day🙂 We sat behind first base in the second deck about 10 rows back, same seats in the World Series also. Tonight is THE first time I have ever seen the actual televised games, so you better believe there will be a whole lot of pausing while I look for us two needles in the haystack. I'm determined to find us lol I wish my dad was still here to look back on this with me. And as a little special added bonus.....who woulda known I'd be getting to watch, in person, the eventual all time homerun champion 17 years before he hit number 756, during the year his assault on the record arguably really began, the year of his first of many MVP winning seasons. Some people can say they got to see Ruth, DiMaggio, Aaron.....Mantle play....but I got to see Bonds on those two days, and heck, I guess McGwire also....a few weeks later🙂 I'm just a casual Reds fan these days. I went crazy for the Chicago Cubs and my father's hometown, boyhood team The Detroit Tigers not long after The Reds magic 1990 season. Watching this game and the next is going to be a lot of fun, and keep my eyes really busy lol

Ended up here as I'm on a classic baseball kick from my childhood after watching the Astros win the World Series days ago. With the benefit of 2022 eyes, interesting to see how foolish Rijo looks throwing to 1st SEVEN TIMES(!!!) during Sid Bream's 3rd inning at bat to keep Bonds from stealing 2nd. And with 2 outs no less! I screamed out loud forget the runner, get the batter out! Bream ended up taking the distracted Rijo deep to tie the game. LOL.

If I remember correctly, CBS dropped Jack Buck from their MLB coverage all together in favor of Sean McDonough because: 1) He was never their first choice in the first place. He was only in the A-team w/ Tim McCarver out of shher desperation because Brent Musburger, who was going to be the lead play-by-play man when CBS was about to launch their MLB package was abruptly fired on April Fools Day 1990. 2) Rudy Martzke, who was arguably the most influential and/or preeminent sports broadcasting critic/columnist in the United States was very critical of Buck's on-air performance. CBS had a lot riding on their MLB package, and I'm sure that Buck became the natural fall guy for why their coverage wasn't considered quite up to par as say NBC's coverage (w/ Vin Scully, Joe Garagiola, Bob Costas, Tony Kubek, etc.) of recent memory. CBS also felt that Buck wasn't doing enough to make Tim McCarver shine or look good. 3) Buck did himself no favors w/ his flippant derogatory, borderline biased comments about Bobby Vinton's botched attempt at the "Star Spangled Banner" ("Well if you're Polish and from Pittsburgh, you can do anything you want with the words!!!") prior to one of the 1990 NLCS games in Pittsburgh. Buck also had an annoying habit of calling out big plays before they were officially determined (take for example, his call of Jerry Willard's game winning sacrifice fly/Mark Lemke's game winning slide at home in Game 4 of the '91 World Series).

He always talked about how he framed pitches with his glove as a catcher to get strike calls on close pitches. People said umpires weren't so easily fooled. Well, with these pitch-tracking devices now, someone reviewed the data and found that the same umpires called more strikes on close pitches for catchers that use the framing technique than those that don't.
