  • In Game 1 of the 1991 World Series, Jack Morris scattered five hits across seven innings of work, holding Atlanta to two runs. A three-run homer from Greg Gagne in the fifth inning was the difference, and Kent Hrbek belted a HR into the upper deck in right field an inning later to add an insurance run.
This video is the original CBS broadcast with Jack Buck and Tim McCarver, including pre and postgame coverage.

I had forgotten how the umps didn't automatically ask for the ball after it hits the dirt. I miss 90's baseball man, even though my team wasn't too good in the 90s. Play Ball!

That was solid plate coverage by Olson, and what a sportsman too! Professional. I liked the instant replay angle the best 1:53:08

I forgot how weirdly dead it was in there this game 1 (compared to the '87 ALCS and WS in the Dome.) You could hear a pin drop at times, even with the Twins batting and w runners on, and when Morris had batters 0-2 with 2 outs. I remember wondering why everyone seemed so down. Maybe Jack Buck somehow put the crowd to sleep like he did the TV audience. They did finally get going when the Twins scored, but it was like the crowd was from back in the early losing days of the Twins in the Dome w 15,000 fans bored to death. Bizarre.

Am I missing something? Why did both Pat O' Brien and Jack Buck refer to this as the 88 World Series? This is 1991, with Minnesota and Atlanta, not 1988 with Oakland and Los Angeles.

I love that opening with Ernie Harwell. Baseball was at its best when it relied on sentiment and history to promote the present game. As soon as the game embraced sabermetrics and tried to be modern and cool it lost the edge.
