@drekberg I really enjoy your work and am grateful for your contributions. I believe there is one area of the "Lindt chocolate profile," that makes it a poor choice.
I have read from other sources that the "alkali process" that Lindt uses in making their chocolates significantly reduces the flavanol content in their product.
Was the information I had obtained incorrect?

    • @edwardbutka4750

@@jeremybalizenter2896 LOL, I wish I would have read your reply before I made my post. But, what I have read from other sources makes me suspect in eating Lindt Dark Chocolate.
That alkali process actually helps the "taste profile" of the chocolate. If I was not looking to eat the dark chocolate for the flavanol bang, Lindt is a quality tasting dark chocolate option.

Lindt 90% cocoa is my normal chocolate bar with 7g sugar in the 100g bar, so two squares is just 1.4g of sugar.
Another I like, though it's a little harder to find, is MONTEZUMA'S Absolute Black which is 100% cocoa solids. That's it. Nothing else is listed on the pack under 'ingredients'. Zero sugar. It's perhaps a bit of an acquired taste but no one else in the household steals my chocolate! 😉

It has so many health benefits as well to the point that i'm not even sure how true these are. So apperently dark chocolate boosts your exercise performance, it has antioxidants, it lowers blood pressure it helps balance the LDL and HDL cholestelor, boosts mood (and unlike caffeine it dosen't make you more anxious if you already are before) and it even helps with memory (so sort of a natural nootropic?). Of course all these are from the cocoa content but how true are these claims? i'd really like to know because it sounds too good to be true.

You can also make your own freezer chocolate which consists of raw cocoa powder with coconut oil a little bit of coconut sugar( much lower glycemic, wont spike insulin) cinnamon and you can add nuts and coconut and laid in the freezer and have little bit every now then. I will others things like maca, goji berries etc.

I second that recipe is just I dont follow you on the coconut sugar part. Sugar is sugar no matter what. The super high process to obtain is pretty the same, its not a nature made product. Plus remember your body does not have sugar receptors but sweet receptors so yes, is going to trigger a signal to the brain some 'sugar's is coming even if it's not which brings us to the insulin response. Marketing is strong on the new trend of KETO safe? products ...

Usually, when talking about cakes, cookies, chocolate and other sweets, if it tastes good, it's most likely unhealthy :) I like chocolate a lot (however, I do not eat very often), but I have never managed to enjoy dark chocolate, including the top brands, like Lindt. I would rather have a dark coffee without any sugar. The diet helps if you have some health condition and really have to avoid certain things, but, when that is not the case, if the diet makes you hate the food you eat and eating in general, then it harms more than it helps. I had to take a diet several times and at times I really got depressed seeing foods in stores, or when people invited me to dinner and I had to avoid certain things they were serving. If the food doesn't harm you, then the negative thoughts about it will do it instead. You have to enjoy what you eat... like life!

“There are many proven benefits of dark chocolate on health, so the potential harm from the presence of lead and/or cadmium needs to be weighed against these benefits,” says Castle. “Moderation is probably the best advice for dark chocolate lovers. I buy 100% and slowly melt it with a bit of coconut oil and either a small amount of coconut sugar or monk sugar. In summer I will drizzle that over berries or frozen banana or I add some nuts and seeds to the melted chocolate and allow it to firm up again. This way I get a far healthier treat with less sweetness and a healthier form of sugar than a bar with higher amounts of white sugar.

@@corceles I actually called Lindt and that's what they told me. The 90% is alkali processed aka dutched- the 85% is not. Dutched is not as healthy and it has less phytonutrients- which is the whole point. Dutching chemically alters the cacao to lower it's acidity.

How often can you have this (speaking of a two square 1/2 serving of an 85% cocoa chocolate bar) and not compromise health and continue to encourage weight loss? If details are helpful, it’s an Alter Eco chocolate bar with a full serving (4 squares) being 190 cal, 17 total grams of fat, 4 g of total sugar and with raw cane sugar being the 3rd ingredient on the label.
