When my husband and I were working on the content for this episode we really wanted to make sure that it didn't appeal to the selfish ego - and instead to the higher self. We'd love to receive you comments on how you authentically ensure that you're likable at work. And have you every applied any of the practices shared in the video?

      Hi Shadé
Just to share my experience here...
I think what made my professional life easier and sane at places where I worked were a few things like...
Honesty and integrity for work at hand and according highest priority to work.
Shirking work is a deep rooted habit among people at workplace. Not shouldering responsibility for the work done by someone is another trait, particularly when there has been some questions about the quality of work.
So integrity and honesty for one's responsibility at work paid off well for me.
The second one was that I avoided to be part of all gossip in the office, which comes under your 'Rise above toxicity'.
Gossip about all women among men particularly was quite rampant and it used to be really nasty and ugly. So i kept my mind away from this filthy mess and my peers at work acknowledged my non-involvement in it after a while though.
So that was what made my professional life meaningful at work. Trust it achieves your objective of us sharing our experiences with you. 🙏

On a side note, not related to the video (which is great), it feels like you are exhausted/feeling unwell or sad today, unlike the other days. My perception might be wrong, but it's just a feeling. I hope you are okay.

    How to be more likeable:
    1. Only seek out the good in people. (Have a positive attitude).
    2. Rise above the toxicity. (Avoid gossip and back-biting.)
    3. Don't bond through unhappiness with people.

What is wrong with unhappiness being the basis of bonding? People who feel oppressed, often have only mechanism to cope, by seeking out others in similar position.

Great advice. I work in a very large city education department. The toxicity is enormous. One way to become likeable in a toxic environment is to not show off to your coworkers too much. Just "show off" to the boss (if he/she is not insecure). I have found that my abilities naturally threaten others. So I try to not display my talents too much.

In order to likeable in work, just share your ideas, beliefs and ask for feedback if you are in senior role. As per my experience as a Branch Manager role in Banking industry, just ignore the negativity and accept the challenges and try to coach for good things to your team members. Still, there are lots of things to do more in this topic, mostly it will also depends upon the EI. Also try to avoid the toxic people and multiply your positive attitude.

This is such a helpful video. I have just started at a new job and one of my colleagues actually rolled her eyes at me the other day, I was devastated when I got home that night and reflected on my actions - I realised I was doing so much wrong, I was gossiping, getting carried away with 'and another thing' and 'someone told me this about him', etc. I will implement these practices straight away! Many thanks.

Watching videos the past 6 months on how to be more likeable at my work place. And I must say, though I have done all of the above you have mentioned as they come naturally to me, it hasn't worked. If you are a good human, purely a good human, this doesn't work. Especially no.2! I don't like gossip at work and to be honest I find it a bit disrespectful when it happens at work. I have used that answer you gave when I was in front of two coworkers talking bad about another team member and it got me even more dislikeable. Some see me as not fun if I don't gossip. To be honest, I'm struggling. Maybe it's how I say things and not what I say, but still being kind and professional doesn't work in toxic environments.

    • @ShadeZahrai
      @ShadeZahrai  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Dimitra, Thank you for sharing about your experience. When the workplace culture is too far gone down the hole of gossip and backbiting, it's reasonable to expect that someone with your qualities to not fit in. I commend you for trying your best without compromising your values.
Gossip is awful. Even listening to it is harmful. Wherever possible it is best to avoid being around it.
You might have already asked yourself these questions:
      1. Is being likable (by those who engaging in gossiping) necessary for you to perform your role well and for your career to advance?
      2. Are you able to keep away from the toxic behavior and maintain a positive state?
      3. Given the choice would you stay or get a job elsewhere with a healthier culture?
Asking yourself some questions will help you gain some clarity and to decide how you're going to move forward.
      Best wishes!

Funnily enough we had a manager from a different department who was being horrible to the extent affecting people's 'nocturnal pattern'. I advised my colleagues that the manager is now under a new director so most likely has different goals and expectations and this may be being filtered through to all the staff. I suggested to not to let it get to the said colleague who acknowledged this yet is not happy that they're having to face the brunt of this new office dynamics.

I like the points but in certain situations if you don't give a negative option about someone when all your peers are giving it. It may lead to a negative publicity for yourself leading to your peers turning against you.. Thoughts?
