Hi Jeremy See and thank you for this video! Can you recommend a good device much bigger than a phone that can easily sit on an electric piano music rest to run these apps on? I don't want to try and read music from a small device, and I don't want to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars more than necessary to have an adequate device to run these apps on. I looked at the thumbnails of your recent videos and didn't see one that seems to compare these types of devices.
Been very pleased with Simply Piano... been playing since Thanksgiving and I've got about 12 chords down and it impresses me that at almost 40, I can play a little bit. Never going to do it professionally, but yeah I can now walk up to a piano and play a few little jingles. All I wanted :)
My two boys started with Simply Piano four years ago and it was amazing to get them started! They’re 9 and 10 years old now and have a teacher! The apps are a great start!
I've been using Flowkey and the ability to select whichever measure I want to practice is extremely valuable and a big time-saver. If you're having difficulty with a particular measure or set of measures but have no difficulty with the others, it doesn't make sense to have to repeat all the other measures every single time just to practice the section that you have trouble with.
Jeremy, thank you for this video. I am a never played the piano in my life guy that has always had a desire to learn but, never had the time to do so. I just retired and have purchased (not yet taken delivery of) a Kawai CA49 and am now determined to learn. Ironically, it seemed to me to be easier to review and decide on which beginner's piano I wanted to buy than it has been to decide what to use to learn to play. Your video has given me a starting point from which to experiment and decide.
thanks for all your help !!! I just bought the p125 today after watching your reviews and now I am testing simply Piano . You got yourself a new subscriber :) I always wanted to play Final Fantasy songs from Nobuo Uematsu
I need an app really for beginners. An app that startels teaching what is a cord a minor or a major cord, an octave, etc. An app that starts with the terminology of musical instruments execution. That's really would be an app for beginners.
Great video and thank you! We've used at home both SP & Flowkey. My daughter started SP at 8, during lockdown, and after 3 years is still studying piano with a teacher (I'd add that after 1 year the app, which was really fun and worth buying it, is not enough just by itself; the teacher later on had to focus on her posture and technique). I had musical background om assical guitar and liked the songs, mostly on Flowkey (SP had much less contents on Android). A quite severe limit I found for not English speaking learners was the language: kids cannot benefit from the courses unless they can understand them.
Flowkey is far better technically/learning advice and traditional strategies, we’re only a few weeks in. But flowkey doesn’t give the same dopamine achievement hits that everyone is addicted to. Or giggles. I’m talking about for my 12 yr old.
Excellent review! Thank you so much! I have been trying to teach an 8-year-old attached to her device and found concentration wanes. This review allowed me to choose her learning guide (at home with her parents AND with me) based on the way she learns. I also found that I could brush up with the Skoove app if I want to purchase both.
This video is just amazing. Mind blowing. I didn't thought that there was so much. Anyway I literally didn't thought they were any at all. It's nice to be able to watch this, this morning. I am currently doing a piano course online. But the professor is stuck with let it be by The Beatles. I am full of it. I can't find a way to play it. I can't find the beat. So I prefer to practice what I learn on songs that I listen all the time and that I love. It's so much more enjoyable. Thank you! You are awesome.
I used flowKey for 7 days from scratch with no background knowledge. It moves very quickly to.the next level with less repetition like SimplyPiano. I ended up giving up as my hands need more repetition to train the muscles. When I tried Simply Piano, it's 3 weeks now and I have grown so much and get my muscles memory leveled up now. Simply Piano as well allows you to have 5 members of the family (Me and my 2 daughters 5yrs & 12yrs) learning at different level. And yes, the family is moving on. Unfortunately, SimplyPiano does not allow you to change the speed and my 5 years old sometimes gets very discouraged because of seeing so meny red in her play. If only they can change this. Also, there are times they use musics and bass that are like hard rock, that I personally hate, and I just rush to play the part to skip the, which is not helpful. If only they can allow to turn that off. Also, Simply Piano does not have the video of a pianist showing how my hands should move, like flowKey, and sometimes you just do the wrong approach and learn mistakes way longer before you can correct it. If only they had the piano teacher's hands like flowKey, then it would be the perfect app!
You've outlined probably the BIGGEST shortcoming in Simply Piano, the speed that it presents the single line of music notation coming in from the right of the screen can't be changed. It is a MAJOR flaw.
@@johnwoodrow8769That's a lie. On Android it has the Option to change the tempo. It is also stated in the review. Or what are you referring to? Is 60% still to fast for you 😂😂?!?!
Hi Jeremy, truly appreciate your video! Which one would u recommend for a very young kid at beginner level, who already has a personal teacher, but would like to increase interactivity and engagement with the piano at home, almost like a game. Thank you!
I have to tell you that I find the lack of a whole bunch of contemporary songs to be a lot closer to what I want from a piano learning app, because so much of what has come out in the past 30 years……and I know I’m gonna insult some people when I say this…… so much of what has come out in the past 30 years has been total crap. Add in the metronome feature, and the ability to reach out to a piano professional, and I think that it’s going to be well worth the additional money without having to scroll through endless pages of Adele and Ed Sheeran just to find something that’s worth playing. I think David Bennett had recommended skoove, and I after your review I’m starting to see why. Thank you for covering this.
I have the Yamaha DGX-670 based on your recommendations about 2 years ago (maybe now you don't feel as strongly about it. ) In any case, I wish companies like Yamaha would produce learning apps as a perk to buy their instruments. I appreciate your work! Cheers!
I got a three month free flowkey subscription with my yamaha piano but they dont really advertise it I learnt about it while watching a review on my keyboard
The DGX-670 has sort of a learning app built into the keyboard itself, with 100 songs that you can play along with as you follow the bouncing ball on sheet music shown on the built-in screen. It also has something called Chord Tutor, which is more like a chord dictionary than a chord tutor.
Hi Jeremy, Great review! Very much enjoyed it! I have a follow-up question for you: Is there any app you can recommend that allows you to choose a song (e.g. Elton John's Daniel) and decide which soundtrack/channel (e.g. lead voice, piano, guitar etc.) you want to perform live on your piano while the song is being played? Thanks so much for a feedback. Best, Sash
Thanks for your review. Could you please tell which output will I need to connect an iPad for learning - USB to Host or USB to Device? I'm trying to choose a keyboard at the moment and don't want to make a mistake with this.
Thank you for this breakdown. I tried flowkey, and the lessons honestly are a little annoying. It feels like things are missing like maybe what fingers to use on which notes. I'm forgetting now because it's been two years. But learning scales was really good on there. I keep thinking to go back but honestly it wasn't worth it for me. I just didn't know what else to use. There is part of simply piano that seems good, not all the bright colors and stuff, I like to interface on flowkey better BUT the way they show your interacting with an actual lesson, I think is probably superior. I had never heard of the other application but now I'm going to do a trial because I think the lessons themselves will be better. Again thank you for giving us the demo!
Have you tried pianonote? I've been teaching myself to play the piano for a few hours on the weekends the past few years. I can play basic songs, but really struggle with 8th and 16th notes or playing with both hands when the 2 hands are playing anything complex.
Problem with all of these apps is there is no guidance from advanced and on. Yes the songs get harder but there is no guidance anymore. So you end up with just practising harder songs until you get it. Not really learning technique, flow, posture, handplacement, motion, relaxation, use of arms and body, freefall, trust (list goes on and on) . You will also most likely develop bad form if there is no one watching you and could even injure yourself. It can take some time to unlearn these bad habits. Within a year of piano playing I completed Yousian, Playground sessions and Skoove. But the road ends there for piano apps (atleast for me). If you want to progress any further a teacher is mandatory. I would say get one anyway if you are serious about piano playing. But if you just want to see if this hobby is something for you then these apps are a great and cheap way to get started.
I’m looking for the ability to simply see the notes on my device that I’m playing on my digital piano. I see lots of videos of pianists playing and what they are playing being transposed onto a device. Thanks!
I have an acoustic piano, for 25 years. Decided to not let it just sit there collecting dust. Is there an app that works better with acoustic and android device? Complete noob here, for now. I want to be able to read sheet music so I can pick up any piece of music and atleast understand what's written. Which is best?
I don't like that Flowkey doesn't show fingerings. They are really useful for picking up a song quickly. Instead, you have to watch the instructor's finger movements which is time consuming and error-prone.
Hey, great video! I’m trying to get back into playing the piano after not playing for a decade but I was an advanced player. Which would be best the app for me?
Not necessary in the app itself. This sort of stuff is easily found and well covered by other TH-cam sources. I'm not promoting any particular app, (I use Simply Piano and it does have limitations IMO) just addressing you particular point. What I have found is that MANY internet sources are best explored, the app just being one of them. For example, I've found way better arrangements of songs covered by Simply Piano from other free sources (better arrangements, easy of playing, and reinforcing key concepts).
Thanks Jeremy, great review! In the future can you do follow up videos for each of the apps at an early intermediate to intermediate level. Also which app has the best sheet music for printing so I can improve my sight reading!
I know this is old, but I am having good luck with Musescore. There's tons of sheet music uploaded from users that you can use, and you have to pay $5-6 bucks each for. It also has a play feature with looping and slowdown.
hi thank you! I have to choose: a digital piano with or without lightened keys? the question is: is there any app that connect to the digital piano and username: the light key function? thank you for your reply
Is the Casio CT-S1 shown here suitable for learning piano? Asking because of just 61 keys and only semi-weighted. Would it be hard to switch from that to "full" electric piano?
Jeremy, you also have a link in the description for PianoForAll, but you didn't review it. It appears to be a one-time purchase, for up to 300 lessons. Have you tried it, what do you think of it?
Is it possible in any of these apps to change from english music encryption (A,B,C,D,E,F,G) to spanish/italian music encryption (Do,Re,Mi,Fa,Sol,La,Si)?
I finally bought a Yamaha E373 and it's been so long since I played that my fingers hurt attempting to play the pieces I usually did...really frustrating so I'm gonna restart 😅 Thanks for the video!
The 3 apps from this video are side scrollers, I get dizzy with them and found they don’t really prepare you to read sheet music. I like Playground Sessions and Piano Marvel better since they actually have normal static sheets. I did a full year of Playground Sessions and wanted to review my options again before I renew.
Many thanks for great review. I planning to start learning with simply piano. Can you please help me to choose right digital piano? At the moment im between Yamaha P525 and Yamaha P225. Are they both will work with my ipad and apps like simply piano, flowkey etc? Or there is some better piano? Tkanks in advance
Great video and subject, Jeremy. This is valuable information for many, especially with free trials for the apps featured, and as usual, recommended keyboards and other peripheral accessories and items. They would be good to shake off the cobwebs, even for me, but I have more advanced courses now.
@@JeremySee And that recommended keyboards looks really familiar. I think Masataka Kono uses the same Zoom digital recorder for his videos. I think he had a recent video featuring what he uses.
I have studied keyboard about 2 years when I was 20 and I play in choir. But after my studies I went for job abroad. Then i have no touch with keyboard for almost 15 years. But at the corona time I wanted to learn keyboard again and I bought a keyboard. I can still understand the notes and chords and I can play keyboard using that notes. But its not as I did before 15 years. I really wanted to play keyboard fluently. Please help me which app is best for me or if I will go to a real instructor ? Thank you.
This is really helpful. I see that you didn’t include Yousician in the review. What is your take on Yousician in comparison to Simply Piani and Flowkey?
Very useful video.thanks..but still confused..I have yamaha E373, can you pls suggest which app will be suitable..and similar to chordana in casio?doesn't yamaha has its own?
Simply Piano does has (a serious) sheet music mode. Where you can select multiple bars and choose left and right hand modes to learn. Here you can follow with the actual sheet music or turn the selected bars (or whole song) into the 'game mode'. I use this a lot after mastering a song through 'gane mode'
I started restoring my piano skills with “playgroup sessions” yet you don’t appear to include yet it has many courses, bootcamps for beginners intermediate and advanced then thousands of songs also learn so finding your favourite music isn’t hard at all.
Are there any free apps that let you play using midi files. I want the notes to appear as they would on sheet music, not the cascading down video game look. Also, would be nice if I could connect my iPad to it with a cord and have it stop if I hit a wrong note. I have a Yamaha P105. Thanks!
Hey Jeremy ....Long time, hope you and your family are doing well. I do hope Roland gets the new FP-E50 to you for review, would be a excellent comparison to the Yamaha DGX. Spec wise, it looks killer good. I do like Roland's PHA-4 Keybed Action. Excellent review on these learning apps. Thanks
What a funny intro this video got. For the average person who wants to play the piano at home on your own as a hobby at your own pace without having to sell a *kidney*
How long will the free trials last? This video came out at the perfect time, I placed my keyboard order 2 days ago but it won’t be here for another week or so.
What is the best app, I already experience simply piano but bad to say not complete song always short only I like huge full song and can learn formally
May you suggest me which app has the most Japanese songs such as video console game (mario, etc.), anime (gundam, sailor moon, etc.) as well as J-Pop (Ken Hirai) ?
Surely you need to print out the music so that you can practice it many times over having first learned from the app. I tried flowkey and couldnt find an option to print the music.
Hi, I’ve purchased Simply Piano but I don’t have the ‘play section/library’ mentioned in your video. Is this still rolling out and are the songs region bound? Cause I’m living in Europe and I would like to have Asian/Chinese songs as well. Thank you!
Do you need a specific keyboard that has the mipi cable or do these apps use the mic on your iPad to tell if you messed up on a note? I’m about to order a dep20 but can’t seem to find if it works with simply piano and how to connect it
You can use a MIDI cable or MIDI Bluetooth adapter or use the microphone in the tablet. Using MIDI allows you to play with headphones and a noisy room can’t cause a problem.

Is the Casio CT-S1 shown here suitable for learning piano? Asking because of just 61 keys and only semi-weighted. Would it be hard to switch from that to "full" electric piano?
Hi I’m following your videos , all are so informative 🥰😇🤜🏻🤛🏻 can you review Suzuki hp -x3
I think the play louder and play lower notations are fun to learn. It is in skoove but not simply piano. Is it I. Flowkey?
Jeremy, you also have a link in the description for PianoForAll, but you didn't review it. It appears to be a one-time purchase, for up to 300 lessons. Have you tried it, what do you think of it?
Is it possible in any of these apps to change from english music encryption (A,B,C,D,E,F,G) to spanish/italian music encryption (Do,Re,Mi,Fa,Sol,La,Si)?
Settle down Julie Andrews 🙂
I finally bought a Yamaha E373 and it's been so long since I played that my fingers hurt attempting to play the pieces I usually did...really frustrating so I'm gonna restart 😅
Thanks for the video!
Which one would work best for someone with very little vision who just wants to learn chords and by ear? I cannot see small and quick moving video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you.
Thanks for this informative video. Do you still have the links to try the apps ?
Great video ❤. Is there any arranger like app , For example like to play the Yamaha like styles… trigger with intro, fill, ending… ??
Hi Jeremy, thanks for your very informative videos! I'm a complete beginner to piano... Do u feel the Yamaha EZ300 works well with piano apps?
Works perfectly!
Thank you for your video. What you think about Chordana play and casio music play ?
Hi Jeremy thank you for the awesome in depth review! Would Roland Go:Key would with these apps? Many thanks Ethan, Australia
Yes it will!
Are you still giving your keyboard lessons to play with accompaniment ?
If so , I would like to join .

Brother, please do review for yamaha psr-E473 vs casio ct-X9000. I have more confusion.
Hi Jeremy . Did you know any software for MIDI To STYLES ? Pls
I have a Roland fp 10, can I connect the skoove app to it and play using headphones? How do I do that?
Simply Piano does has (a serious) sheet music mode. Where you can select multiple bars and choose left and right hand modes to learn.
Here you can follow with the actual sheet music or turn the selected bars (or whole song) into the 'game mode'.
I use this a lot after mastering a song through 'gane mode'
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
I started restoring my piano skills with “playgroup sessions” yet you don’t appear to include yet it has many courses, bootcamps for beginners intermediate and advanced then thousands of songs also learn so finding your favourite music isn’t hard at all.
I suppose if one were to use this and essentially master the app, that type of person who reaches out for professional instructions at that point
"Without having to sell a kidney", thank you for the info 😂
Which one works best with windows PC?And google app so you can do both
Are there any free apps that let you play using midi files.
Thanks
Thanks for dropping in bud. It's a pricey board and I'm asking Roland to lend me a review unit. But I'm not hopeful. 🤞
@@JeremySee Wishing you the best of luck!👍
What a funny intro this video got.
For the average person who wants to play the piano at home on your own as a hobby at your own pace without having to sell a *kidney*
Piano Marvel for me
Can I add a drum machine into my CAsio CT-1?
I would like to be able to use rhythms with my keyboard
any of these apps support or correct pedal? have lyrics?
Didn’t you experience an out of sync (midi latency) when connecting your Casio st1 with your IPad by Bluetooth?
There'll always be some latency with anything wireless.
What about Yousician?
How long will the free trials last? This video came out at the perfect time, I placed my keyboard order 2 days ago but it won’t be here for another week or so.
No worry. I'll keep it available till you get your keyboard. ❤️
What is the best app, I already experience simply piano but bad to say not complete song always short only I like huge full song and can learn formally
Does any of these apps interact with the keyboards with lights and keys?
May you suggest me which app has the most Japanese songs such as video console game (mario, etc.), anime (gundam, sailor moon, etc.) as well as J-Pop (Ken Hirai) ?
Leuke video top ,
Ik heb een vraag ik heb een digitale piano de amadeus d510 is dat een goede investering geweest .
Groeten Richard
thank u bro
How does the app know what keys you're pressing?
loop 5 plus bars and set tempo. thar would be good.
Surely you need to print out the music so that you can practice it many times over having first learned from the app. I tried flowkey and couldnt find an option to print the music.
Why did you leave out the Yousician Piano?
which app has Hans Zimmer songs ?
do i need micro usb or regular usb for midi function? for the casio keyboard shown
Thank you!
Hi, I’ve purchased Simply Piano but I don’t have the ‘play section/library’ mentioned in your video. Is this still rolling out and are the songs region bound? Cause I’m living in Europe and I would like to have Asian/Chinese songs as well. Thank you!
Have you finished the essential 3 course?
Do you need a specific keyboard that has the mipi cable or do these apps use the mic on your iPad to tell if you messed up on a note? I’m about to order a dep20 but can’t seem to find if it works with simply piano and how to connect it
You can use a MIDI cable or MIDI Bluetooth adapter or use the microphone in the tablet. Using MIDI allows you to play with headphones and a noisy room can’t cause a problem.
