At about 8:15 into the video is an old timey gospel song. I've tried to find it, but failing miserably. What is the name of that song? I'd love to learn the lyrics!
We met his gr-grandson on the Abrams Falls trail in Cades Cove. We were out of water, our tongues dragging, he just stopped and insisted he fill up our water bottles and had a chat. So friendly and nice. He looked a lot like Alvin: strawberry blond, tan, handsome and fit. It was the highlight of our day!
What an honor that was to meet Sgt. Alvin York's gr-grandson ! And that is some beautiful country in that area. Used to live just over the mountain from Cades Cove, Cherokee, N.C. Miss those mountains. 😊
I have watched that movie, "Sergeant York" several times, and it serves me well to hear that the lightening bolt that guided Alvin to God was actually his mother. Us mountain boys love and loved our mothers with a love as big as the mountains and are guided throughout our lives by our mother's words. Our fathers also, for they worked their lives away for our upbringing. Thanks for the great story of a great hero amongst many who kept us all safe in this great country of ours.
I grew up in Jasmestown Tennessee. The highschool graduated from was started and named after,Sargeant York. We attended his funeral. His home and Grist Mill is a Tennessee State Park. His son Andrew was a Parkranger there and when you toured the house, Andrew would give the historyof his family. Sargeant Yourk, Mrs Gracie and son Tommy are inturned in the Wolf River Cemetery.
Did you know my cousin Jerry Campbell? Jerry was killed in Vietnam, he knew Alvin. You see we were Gracie’s 3rd cousin. Visiting the Campbell’s, apparently just before Alvin past. I sadly opted out Visiting Sgt. York to go horseback riding with Jerry. My mom and sister met with him but at that time he was blind due to diabetes. How many times I regretted not to have meet this man. I’m old now, but know I will meet him in Paradise someday!
I love your stories. My Uncle Jack who came from Salem, Illinois and was living the oilfield life in Wyoming. He came down in the early 1980’s to look at the grave of a modern day disciple of the Lord. I have a picture of my uncle Jack and it moved him deeply. He said he would soon meet brother Alvin in the Lords Kingdom. Fifteen years later he met “Brother Alvin”. I love your stories. I let my aging father listen to your stories. He loves your stories. “He says the Phillips boy is a fine story teller”. Fine a compliment you can get from Dad.
What a man. What a good, solid, salt-of-the-earth man. My late husband was a man much like Alvin York. He could be counted on by family, friends and strangers. That was 45 years ago and I miss him still. I've read about Alvin York and seen movies but this recording seemed to bring him alive, to show his humanity - and his humility. Thank you for another moving tribute to our Appalachian forebears, JD.
What a great way to start my Saturday. I first heard of Sgt, York when I was a boy. What a testimony of faith in the Lord. Inspiring. Thank you sir for your excellent production.
Sargent York was a great solider. He went war despite being a religious man who didn't want kill anyone. Un like Trump and most members of Senate and house of representives. The poor always fight the rich has privilege.
JD, you lifted his name high with pride and respect we all felt in the telling of the story. God love you Dear, he blessed you with a fine gift indeed. ✝
What Good Great God’s Gift to America and mankind. I loved the movie that was made about him👍. Gary Cooper was awesome in it. Thanks for sharing Alvin’s words. I’m sure he’s in Paradise with Jesus and the Saints. Thanks JD.
Hello JD. I shouldn't be surprised, but you knocked another one out of the park. What a hero Alvin York was. They don't make many like that anymore and to have you tell the story made it even more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing this story.
Back in 2005 my mom and I went and toured the home that was given to Sgt. York, and his son is the person who gave us a tour, he had to be a 70s at that time. I still have a picture of him and my mom in their living room.. Great memories.
My late father joined the Army in late 1940 Fort Knox 27 Field Artillery and when tank battalions were formed my dad was transferred to HQ Co. 750 Tank Battalion dad told me about training and how his unit was around Sgt. York farm and he got to meet Sgt. York dad did not talk about his time in the Army much his unit did a lot of fighting but I got the feeling meeting Sgt. I was raised in eastern Kentucky, but even there as a kid in the 70s and 80s, we still knew about Alvin York. I saw the Gary Cooper movie about him when I was 13 and it’s been my favorite movie ever since. All of America’s schoolchildren should learn about this great hero regardless of it being more than a century ago now. I’m my mind, he’s just as important as Napoleon and George Washington. Thank you for a wonderful narration!
There's a lot of us York's in eastern KY especially the Lawrence county big sandy area. My name is les York named after my great grandfather who was a member of the york brothers Band which got famous for rockabilly and played at the ole Opry before Elvis.
Sir, you are the finest storyteller alive today. You probably have heard this, and most likely have a hard time believing it, but you bring these stories to life with your ability to read them in a good ol' mountain boy accent and inflection at just the correct moment that makes you sound like the writer lounging with his children and grandchildren in a sitting room just telling his own story.
I always heard that you learn something new every day. I knew he was a hero but didn't know the story of how. Now I know how the VA that is located in my home town got it's name. Thank you for this story.
One of my favorite heroes when I was little in the 1950's I grew up watching this old movie/Sqt. York and it is still one of my favorite. Love the scene where he got saved and walked in the little white church where Walter Brennan played the pastor.

i saw the movie when i was young, i am almost 66 years old. with the event of the computer i read Avin Yorks diary. it is fascinating. Alvin met Gracie Williams and she was already a Christian, and she is the one who lead Alvin to the Lord. i have been a hunter and rifleman and handloader all my life. i have several flintlocks that i shoot competition and hunt with. no doubt Alvin was a great shot, but a turkey's head at 100yds? you can't even see a turkey head at 100yds! LOL! i love your story's JD,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
It’s great that you mentioned his diary- I wrote this story in my own words after studying his diary- the part about the turkeys head at a hundred yards is Alvin’s words
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller oh well, the truth is the truth, a turkeys head is 2in wide at the most. i am not doubting you JD, it is the shooter i have a problem with. i read the diary about 10 years ago so i have forgotten that, a moving 2in target at 100yds with open sights am a round ball is beyond my belief. and believe it or not York was a liberal, so, just because he said it don't make it so,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I'm sure that there are those that have no problem seeing a turkey's head at a hundred yards away, because I know for a fact that when I was a kid I used to be able to put a thread through the eye of a needle with just the light reflecting out of a television
I have shot squirrels at 100 + yards. I have no doubt that York could and have shot turkey heads at that distance and more. When you grow up with a rifle or pistol in your hands, you get real good or go hungry.
Alvin York was truely a mazing man. I have seen the movie Gary Cooper played Alvin York well over 50 to 70 times. I could wafch that many more times to. Thank you for sharing this story with us over such a amazing man. God bless you and your family...🙏❤🙏❤🙏
Hi JD. I live in Scott County TN about an hour from Jamestown. I always love hearing this story. Thanks so much for this. Sergeant York is one of my heroes. Along with my father and grandfather's he was one of the reasons I joined the infantry in the US Army. I tried my best not to disappoint any of them. I hope I succeeded. Thanks again.
My Wife's Grandmother (Daisy Slaughter) was Mother York's closest neighbor back then and left ton's of newspaper articles and several rare pictures of Alvin and his Brother George and pictures of the Family on a Fishing/Camping trip to a small lake on the other side of "Jimtown" with Model "T" Fords that Alvin bought when they came out after he got back from the War. I Have a really nice picture of Alvin and his younger Brother holding their guns wearing their hunting clothes. Alvin and Miss Gracie were Fine Christian Folks.
Wow, I’ve heard and watched Alvin York’s story many times, but never with this much respect and impact. So well done once again, JD. It seems that those who rarely see the actual fighting, love war. Those they deem expendable are always the ones fighting in it. Mostly poor, simple men who have little but faith and Providence to guide them in the wars of the affluent. Sacrificial lambs in the slaughter, even today as we listen to your moving tribute to Sgt Alvin York these wars continue. Thanks for shedding the light on this true American Hero, simply trying to get back to the Hills and mountains he loved. “Blessed are the peacemakers”, indeed.
Thank you, I can tell you received the. True message of this video. Indeed, I studied Alvin’s personal diary and made a pilgrimage to his grave and only then did I attempt to share his story from his perspective. I did my best to salute a true hero and share his story to the next generation
Wow what an amazing man, Patriot, and philanthropist! I’ve never heard his whole story. During my time as a kid we never really learned much about the Great War but more about WW2. Now that I’m a grown man and amateur historian I’ve delved much deeper into WW1, and let me tell you it’s fascinating, and absolutely terrifying. The sheer amount of folks who died and then barely two decades later it produced a psychopath who was convinced Gods chosen people were the cause of all of the Vyemar Republics(Germany’s) problems. In turn cause our country to hand over its destiny to the military industrial complex, and eventually take us off the gold standard. Don’t get me wrong I’m pro strong military and always support our boys but now we are in a sad state of affairs with our military especially how they recruit for shooters/boots on the ground. God bless Alvin York and all the other brave who gave for God and Country!! Thank You!!!
Sgt. Alvin York, man of peace but formidable in war. I first became aware of his name in the movie "Sergeant York" with Gary Cooper portraying him. They never taught us of this history. Thank you Appalachian Storyteller. This gets more into him being a man of faith, yearned for peace, but put in the violence, gore , mud and blood, of war. Yet, this man of faith and honor, rose up did what had to to be done. I have so much respect for Sgt. Alvin York. I learned much more in this video about his story. You got me Appalachian Storyteller, yours is the only channel I've joined to support, at a low level, but my income is very low too! 😂 Brother, you have a talent in this field that I admire. Blessings to you from a Métis (Native & White..Halfblood. ) brother. Keep it going.
They did until the government , forced my dad’s grand mother, to sale 1500+ acres of land that she had inherited . The government forced her to sale at just ( 8 cents per acre . ) and yes I said. 8 cents per acre . The government took the land at gun point . Claiming that it was going to be for the Smoke mountains national park . Most of their land onced obtained by the government , was de regulated. And sold off to private investors. My dad told me that there were massive chestnut trees in the mountains some over 10 feet wide , that were covering the mountains leading up towards the highlands pastures. My dad said that land prices back then were around $ 80.00 per acre for bottom land and nearly $ 140 . 00 for the tree covered mountain side . There were tin , gold , silver ,coal ,ETC … around the area maybe even on their land . So when my dad’s grandma died , us army soldiers came to my dad’s house , and forced them to leave at gun point . That’s how the people , were treated… they were forced to sale their land back then or else. Be arrested possible killed if they didn’t agree …
Glad you enjoyed it Debbie, this video took lots of work and I filmed a lot of it in Alvins hometown, at his church, and his grave. A true American Hero
A humble American man with rural upbringing, distinguishes himself in the face of almost certain death half a world away from home. Is honored for his accomplishments in war and goes on to humbly serve his community as a leader and advocate for educational opportunities for the children of communities. And love the Lord and serve Him by serving others. A life well lived. God Bless Alvin York, his descendants and others like him. R.I.P. Good an Faithful servant. May we today be deserving of many more such men to keep and guide us in this fallen and turbulent world.
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I appreciate your channel and your exceptional storytelling ability, your accent adds an element of homespun eloquence. Thank you for sharing these stories.
Heard of him through the movie with Gary Cooper. Sergeant York. Mr. Storyteller, this dedication and narrative was superbly done and well read. on point. Loved it.
My great uncle fought in the first world war. He fought at Ypres and a couple other places. He always told me mom (when she was little/young woman) that when the Americans arrived to help out, that as soon as the bombs etc started dropping, they all dropped their rifles and fled, much to the chagrin of the officers. My great uncle was eventually wounded (in the leg) and got sent home. He was so glad to be out of there. It was such a horrific experience.
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller No problem. Before anyone says anything, I know not all american conscripts were like that. I think maybe for those particular guys, the sheer shock startled them and they fled. Being told what something is going to be like and experiencing it first hand is something entirely different.
So many poor Americans subjected to wars and death on behalf of the rich. As a veteran, it is a complete waste of lives. God bless this man and he is a hero.
I grew up watching the film Sergeant York. At the U.S. Army Infantry School, Ft. Benning GA, the first hero our drill instructors taught us about was Alvin C. York. Proud to have served as a grunt in the same army.
I wasn't born an Appalachian. I grew up a flat-lander on the plains of northern Ohio. When I was 25 I moved to Upper Twin Creek, which flows south into the Ohio river. I was an outsider then, obvious to everyone I met. That was 20+ years ago. These days it might not be as obvious as it was back then, but I'll always be a newcomer. Even after I die here.
Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! Thanks so much for your time and efforts in making and sharing this wonderful celebration of a true American hero! 👏👏👏👏👏
I am glad you are a good story teller so ower mind is set to appreciate what our fellow soldiers went through so we can have our country I think that you should share your stories with all the inmates in the prison's so they'll know what heroes are like thank you
I grew up in Jamestown played football for the Alvin C. York High School. Aka York Institute. Definitely have heard many tales about the great Alvin C.
Incredible video about Sgt. York’s life, service and legacy! The Wolf River and Valley of the Three Forks, York’s home, are richly steeped in Appalachian history. We have land on the Wolf River, and I spend many days there thinking about what life must’ve been like, when times were simpler and living off the land was critical. Thanks for such a beautiful narrative and display of a true American Hero and Legend!
This is truly one of the most inspirational stories that I’ve ever heard. With no formal training, he used the common sense of his father and the biblical teachings of his mother to guide him through one of the deadliest wars of our lifetime. He survived and, not for honor or glory to himself, but to build schools and churches in his community. That makes him a hero.
I live in Albany ky not very far from here. Spent a lot of time in and around fintress co tn and I'm so proud to be ever so distantly connected to this man. My mom's stepdad was born in Jamestown and I have kin in Pickett Co TN just over the state line.

What a great story. War is a terrible thing. Sgt York was a true American legend!
Thank Edward- I agree on all counts
Thank you for your service my friend, America needs more men like you
I could not turn this video off God Bless Alvin York.
A true American Hero
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Absolutely
Awsome story J.D. still rooting for you and that diamond play button.
Man- that would be a dream come true!
What a great man he was. Thankyou again for another amazing historical recollection.
Thank you 🙏
My Wife's Grandmother (Daisy Slaughter) was Mother York's closest neighbor back then and left ton's of newspaper articles and several rare pictures of Alvin and his Brother George and pictures of the Family on a Fishing/Camping trip to a small lake on the other side of "Jimtown" with Model "T" Fords that Alvin bought when they came out after he got back from the War. I Have a really nice picture of Alvin and his younger Brother holding their guns wearing their hunting clothes. Alvin and Miss Gracie were Fine Christian Folks.
beautiful
I live just outside Jamestown. Alvin was a fine soldier and better man! Proud to live in the same area
Well said
Gave me chills, wonderful story
Thank you my friend, and RIP Sgt. York
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Very well said, JD.
Me. York was a patriot, most only watch a Hollywood movie about him… and miss his whole story
Thanks so much for your support, it really helps, so thank you! I wrote this story after reading Mr Yorks diary he kept during the war
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller You're welcome my friend. Enjoyed the story very much.
Donnie loved this Alvin York video fantastic 😍 😊 great job 👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👍👍👍 👏👏👏👏👏
I tell Donnie you said so 😂
Awesome! Love 💕 these Appalachian Stories.
Thank you so much Kathleen!
My dad ,and his brothers ,and sisters . All attended school , in a one room school house in wears Valley Tennessee , back in the 1930s and 40s .
they lived a good life!
That's a true hero. Audi Murphy is another.. love your channel.
Thank you!
I love hearing this story and knowing that it's a true story is even better. You did an amazing job on this and I thank you for posting this one
May we today be deserving of many more such men to keep and guide us in this fallen and turbulent world.
well said my friend

Wonderful Story and Great Job !!
Thank you so much! Have a blessed day!
What a great story! The best detailed account of his life I've heard had me on the edge of my seat. Thanks JD😎👍
Thank you Kathy- I tried to approach this thru Sgt. Yorks eyes, and tell it in a way that has never been told
Excellent Story
Thank you so much, my friend. Have a blessed day.
Knew his story but have never heard it like this, great stuff!
Thanks for that, my purpose was to tell his story like it’s never been told before- thru his own eyes
Heard of him through the movie with Gary Cooper. Sergeant York. Mr. Storyteller, this dedication and narrative was superbly done and well read. on point. Loved it.
Thank you, I did my best to honor his legacy
Isn’t amazing how a call to duty.. brings up a boy to man comes after the years we spent.. bless our time spent better or worst
Agreed
My great uncle fought in the first world war. He fought at Ypres and a couple other places. He always told me mom (when she was little/young woman) that when the Americans arrived to help out, that as soon as the bombs etc started dropping, they all dropped their rifles and fled, much to the chagrin of the officers. My great uncle was eventually wounded (in the leg) and got sent home. He was so glad to be out of there. It was such a horrific experience.
Thanks for sharing that my friend
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller No problem.
Before anyone says anything, I know not all american conscripts were like that. I think maybe for those particular guys, the sheer shock startled them and they fled. Being told what something is going to be like and experiencing it first hand is something entirely different.
So many poor Americans subjected to wars and death on behalf of the rich. As a veteran, it is a complete waste of lives. God bless this man and he is a hero.
Well said
All wars are bankers wars.
I grew up watching the film Sergeant York. At the U.S. Army Infantry School, Ft. Benning GA, the first hero our drill instructors taught us about was Alvin C. York.
Proud to have served as a grunt in the same army.
Thank you for your service
What an amazing story. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Bravo, sir. 👏 👏 👏
Thank you Adam, have a blessed day my friend!

@@TheAppalachianStoryteller God bless you and yours. Hoping you have a great day aswell
what a great story! thanks so much!
Thank you so much!
❤️😎⚖️ love this guy
❤️
I wasn't born an Appalachian. I grew up a flat-lander on the plains of northern Ohio. When I was 25 I moved to Upper Twin Creek, which flows south into the Ohio river. I was an outsider then, obvious to everyone I met. That was 20+ years ago. These days it might not be as obvious as it was back then, but I'll always be a newcomer. Even after I die here.
❤️
Im glad he didn't forget his community
Yeah, he was an honorable man for sure. Look for the story to be featured on the podcast our American stories in the next couple of days.
Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! Thanks so much for your time and efforts in making and sharing this wonderful celebration of a true American hero! 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much Jeremy
This was by far the best 1
thanks so much for that, have a blessed day
The historical metal band Sabaton have a song about York.
I was first introduced to him through the film with Gary Cooper.
Awesome
Thanks!
Thank you Mark, I really appreciate your support, this is what keeps this channel coming. Thank you for your generosity
I am glad you are a good story teller so ower mind is set to appreciate what our fellow soldiers went through so we can have our country I think that you should share your stories with all the inmates in the prison's so they'll know what heroes are like thank you
Thank you Ma’am
I grew up in Jamestown played football for the Alvin C. York High School. Aka York Institute. Definitely have heard many tales about the great Alvin C.
he was a great man
Incredible video about Sgt.
Thank you so much for listening to this powerful story about one of Americas Greatest Men
This is truly one of the most inspirational stories that I’ve ever heard. With no formal training, he used the common sense of his father and the biblical teachings of his mother to guide him through one of the deadliest wars of our lifetime. He survived and, not for honor or glory to himself, but to build schools and churches in his community. That makes him a hero.
Amen, he was a true hero
I live in Albany ky not very far from here. Spent a lot of time in and around fintress co tn and I'm so proud to be ever so distantly connected to this man. My mom's stepdad was born in Jamestown and I have kin in Pickett Co TN just over the state line.
