Oh mylanta JD!! Unfortunately I have had the displeasure to meet only one person that I believe truly had no soul. He had unalived several individuals. I had been pulled for jury duty. The whole time I was hoping and praying they would fill the seats before they got to my number. You could look into the man's eyes and see pure evil, a black emptiness with a wicked grin. Scared me to death!! Never seen anything like it before or since. Another fascinating story to be sure.

I am curious about what happened to Harry's wife, the lady who ran the grocery store locally, after Harry was exposed and hung? Apparently Luella B. Strother Powers continued to live in Clarksburg, West Virginia until the end of her days. She died April 11, 1957 at age 70 and is buried in Sardis Cemetary, Harrison county. Maybe you could do a program about Luella and show her grave?

I just recently found your channel JD, and I find it facinating. I absolutely love love your stories, and will be buying some of your books. Sometimes it's hard to believe that people could be that evil. It seems that almost all of the people of Appalacia lived very hard lives in those days. There were the evil and the wicked, who survived by robbing and killing and doing whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted to survive. Then there were the good, God fearing, ordinary people who worked hard just to survive, and just wanted to be left alone, but constantly had to be on the outlook for, and be prepared defend themselves from the wicked and evil. It had to be a very hard way to live. Do you think it all stemmed from all the poverty in the region and the lack of law enforcement, and it just created two different societies? Or were some people just born and bred to be that evil, like it was in their DNA?

JD. I’ve never heard this story before. It’s so frightening to hear that he had a wife who treated him well n they were in love but just feet’s away was the devil’s dungeon. I’m grateful he didn’t have biological children either. Thank you for sharing history with us!!! ❤

We tend to think of this kind of depravity in more recent times but clearly this was going on nearly 100 years ago. Whatever happened to his wife though?

How does a poor farmer's son learn to read and write like a poet? And keep a journal? I'm a history buff, and it is extremely rare to find a journal kept by anyone born to poor farmers. Not impossible, but unlikely and rare. Also, his birth name was Harms, but he changed it to Powers as an adult. Interesting. Personally, I believe he was a creation, programmed and sent out to wreak havoc in our communities. Much like those who behave similarly today.

Well JD, that certainly was gruesome, I’m a dedicated true crime lover, mostly podcasts but some YT. I’ve come to the conclusion that some people are just out right pure evil.
I was a passenger in a car one day driving along a hwy, and to the left was a side road and a car with 2 men were sitting in it waiting to enter the traffic flow. I happened to look right at them and the hairs on my neck stood straight up, they had eyes as black as pitch and when they returned my gaze my blood ran cold. As the entered the hwy I said to my friend who was driving to slow down a bit so their car could overtake and get ahead of us. Those eyes were pure evil. That happened over 30 years ago but I can still recall it as if it was yesterday. That scared me…. A lot.
Pray you are keeping well JD. Oh on another point, when the recent hurricane and flooding happened in the Appalachas I was so saddened and kept a close eye on any reports, I feel a bit of connection to those mountains from listening to your tales. 😊
