Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another New Order reaction this time with a PATREON request of "Blue Monday." How familiar this tune is, why? because it's a smash hit that all clubs in the 80s should have been playing. See my reaction now!

      You don't.
You potter around, half out of breath. Willing you feet and legs to places they can no longer go.
Almost tripping over yourself and but an embarrassment to the younger members of your own family.
The vision you think that you project is not the one that they see.
Lost in a dry-ice fog of past glories, dawn parties, rushes and Tuesday blues, you look at them and smile.
They smile back. You believe it is knowing respect.
      Look again.
      They smile in pity!!!

So did I, as I was listening just one or maybe two radio channels (I'm also 52), because of a kind or musical protectionism all the synthpop and coldwave bands were banned in France and replaced by very bad music. Producers invented a rockabilly wave, these were songs with silly lyrics with people trying to imitate Elvis Presley.

I spent the 80's dancing with myself on the dance floor. You didn't need a partner, but if your friends wanted to join, which they did, it was a party on the dance floor. New Order is absolutely amazing. They emerged from Joy Division, really a punk band, after lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980. The re-worked band New Order really was one of the leaders of the UK electronica movement, to which Depeche Mode and Echo and the Bunnymen also belong. Legendary band and so many great songs, especially True Faith. Bernard Summers was the guitarist in Joy Division, taking over lead vocals for New Order.

Both Depeche Mode and New Order were great admirators of Kraftwerk, the band that probably made emerge synth pop and techno pop : drums from World in my Eyes are heavly taken from Music Non Stop, and the choir in Blue Monday came from the 1975 Radioactivity.

I'm a 66 year old Electronic Music fan who as a fan of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and other German electronic bands so, when this was released I was so glad that the post-punk bands engaged E.M and produced such fantatic music. New Order were at the forefront of an explosion of British bands who came after them. Depeche Mode, Human League (checkout the "Love & Dancing album) followed later by Eurythics and a swathe of others. Listen to the roots of this type of music by listening to Krafterk. The choir you hear is from the track "Uranium" by Kraftwerk from the 1976 album "rRadioactivity." Nevertheless, New Order altered the British Music scene and set it on a new path much different than anything previous. British "Synth-Pop" as it later was known laid the foundations for later bands and artists that became known all over the world. This song charted more than once and to this day is the best selling 12 inch song EVER!

New Wave in the US. In Europe, New Wave meant something like early Elvis Costello - punk-influenced but more melodic and cerebral.
New Order, though, were Post Punk: punk generation influenced by Kraftwerk, Moroder, Krautrock, Bowie, hi-nrg, horror movies...whatever took their fancy. And Blue Monday is the daddy of every vaguely alternative dance track.

I think something that gets lost on many people with regards to historical context is that this song didn’t just happen to sound like those disco songs you mentioned but they were direct influences to new order. You were spot on about the drum pattern reminding you of Donna Summer. This was pretty revolutionary for its time because no song had ever A. Fully embraced both punk/post punk and disco at the same time, and B. Turned it into a number one hit

The most irresistible dance song of the 80's. So iconic that it charted three times in the UK (1983-88-93). And when your song is remixed by Quicy Jones himself (88 version), you know you have made something special! And another amazing song with brilliant video is True Faith th-cam.com/video/mfI1S0PKJR8/w-d-xo.html

Once in the 80's (I believe you're French) a french radio host said "trou fesses" which sounds almost the same, although I really love New Order, I use to laugh thinking of that.

Totally. As a bonus, the Perfect Kiss video shows a live performance in their recording studio with producer Martin Hannett behind the window. Bernard's voice is a little raw and unsteady but the second half of the song is amazing.

    • @hdufort
      @hdufort 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The background "ahhhhhhhh" is a monk choir sample from Kraftwerk that they have resampled.
Bernard's voice is duplicated. One track is raw, the other is processed though vocoder.

You're getting Disco vibes because this genre is Hi-NRG : the post Disco era which is really Disco speeded up with more beats per minute. Another huge Hi-NRG hit is "You Spin Me Right Round" by Dead or Alive
