Blue Monday was released in 1983, which means it was forward thinking, not retro. To this very day this is the best selling 12" single of all time.

The first song fully realized to take advantage of the emerging 12” single back in 1983. The 12” single gave DJ’s so much more to mix with. That break at 10:45 was a perfect mix point. I know because I used to DJ back in the days of hauling crates of vinyl and using the original Technics 1200 turntables. This song was groundbreaking and still gets dropped into everything. It never stops being great!

    Blue Monday
On March 7th, 1983, New Order pioneered dance music with the release of the best selling 12 inch single of all time-Blue Monday, whose initial run sold over 700,000 copies. The song (now used to name the depressing 3rd Monday of January) is perhaps the most acclaimed and even influential synth-pop track of all time.
My sister still has the original vinyl from 1983

Great reaction. You're spot on- the singer wasn't the typical singer with range- he is a guitarist/ keyboardist who stepped up when the original singer committed suicide (group was then called Joy Division- you should check them out- heavy, heavy sound). But, like you said, his minimalist vocal style works great with this song. You should also check out The Perfect Kiss by New Order.

I'm not sure I'd go with the observation that the lyrics could have been written by a third grader...
I could be way off here and i have no doubt that there are people here who know the background to this song better than I do but to me these lyrics have always been about domestic violence or an abusive relationship... His partner laid their hands upon him and controlled his thoughts, telling him how he should think and feel.
To me it reads like he had been in a textbook, narcissistic abusive relationship

One of the best bands ever, innovators, still kicking to this day. Amazing catalogue - they were the first to use the bass as lead instead of a guitar. Too many classics to list but you can try their "CRYSTAL" a perfect pop song by them. As a side note, Annie Lennox main stream not close to these guys even though lovely voice - these guys were complex, innovators, pioneers, brilliant.

  • @johnchrysostomon6284

"New Order" came from a different band "Joy Division"
As "Joy Division" they had a lead singer/song writer in Ian Curtis. But just before they were going to tour America (they're from Manchester, UK) Ian Curtis killed himself.
"Joy Division" got its name from a group of women used to 'service' Nazi soldiers.
When they lost Ian Curtis they changed their name to "New Order" which both reflects there's a new order in the band, and also harks back to Nazi Germany (though the band members are not Nazis)
Gillian Gilbert joined them in New Order and later married fellow band-mate Stephen Morris (the drummer)
Bernard Sumner had to take over from singing when they went from Joy Division to New Order - so yes, he is not a singer. He was all that they had

The lyrics are simplistic yes, and basic vocals, but the meaning, is that the person in the song is not in a good place and in an abusive and manipulative relationship. But all the FX that you refer to that you have messed about with yourself, everything that came after this song was a direct result of or influenced by them. They invented techniques that we all take for granted such as synched drums

Reading through the comments, I think some people have been getting a little carried away, lol. Yes it was the biggest selling 12" single of all-time but bear in mind that the retail 12" single was only really a significant format for less than 10 years and even during this brief window, sales were pretty low compared to the 7" single and album markets. It did have a big influence on the development of dance music, particularly in the UK. However New Order were not the first, nor even ONE of the first electronic bands. Others were ahead of them by years, both in the UK and elsewhere. Although Blue Monday was influential in the world of dance music, it's a long way from being THE biggest influence, as some are claiming. Don't get me wrong, it's a great track and I have fond memories of dancing to it but some of the claims being made on it's behalf are totally overblown. It's not quite as groundbreaking as some would have you believe, despite what the nostalgia goggles are telling them... :)

@thesingerreacts the band had lost their lead singer to suicide so you’re right the vocalist wasn’t very experienced or nuanced. But the were literally at the cutting edge of tech when they did this.
Welcome to the new waves synth revolution.

    Sometimes less is more.
This is less over top of more.
You had to be there. (Then)

The remix of this song became a hit in the United States after Quincy Jones (who owned Qwest Records) remixed it.

The worlds most sold 12inch record of all time and one of the best dance tracks is some of New orders work but a lot is sampled and copied from other songs of all time starts with a drumbeat sampled from a Donna summer track "our love" that little rift that hooky plays at 3.12 is borrowed from where ? can anyone guess ? The 1965 Clint Eastwood film a few dollars more . th-cam.com/video/0JPnR7C8mZQ/w-d-xo.html (skip to 2.16 of the link)
There is also a sample from Uranium by Kraftwerk at 4.00 well as a sample from a track called dirty talk by Kleain.
Still a great track even thou New order borrowed some of the music !
