    As a child in the 80's this song (and Pete Burns specifically) changed my life. I saw that I could be someone that I yearned to be and knew who I was. Loved Pete Burns and others in the 80s that broke barriers. Even had Pete Burns' & Divine's hair for the late 80's! haha Great stuff and great memories.

    This really did change the pace of 80’s dance music. It was around 120 bpm- that was astounding for pop music at the time. I remember burning up the dance floor at a teen bar to this song. You just couldn’t help yourself!! A friend of mine from the U.K. was a very close friend of Pete Burns. He lived with Pete for about six months before moving to Barcelona. Very interesting and kind person from what I’ve been told- and definitely marched to his own drum beat.

"Brand New Lover", "Hooked on Love", "Nukleopatra", ""Your Sweetness (Is Your Weakness)", "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me to the Doctor)", "Come Home with Me Baby", "I'd Do Anything", and maybe the best cover ever made, "That's the Way (I Like It)"

    Love Love Love this song. As you said, it was the first chart topper for the Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) production trio, who went on become one of the most successful songwriting/production teams of the 80's and worked with the likes of Bananarama, Mel & Kim, Rick Astley, Donna Summer and Kylie Minogue. Would love to see you check out 'Divine - You Think You're a Man' as that was the first SAW UK single to make the chart. It's an amazingly camp HI-NRG track and I adore it.

      Yes SAW produced albums 2&3 for DOA, but that is the one instance where the records sound more like DOA than an SAW production, because DOA were an actual band & the end result is not much different than the original demos, plus DOA wrote those songs, not SAW...you cannot say "You Spin Me Round" sounds like "Never Gonna Give You Up"...the closest SAW ever came to the DOA records was the Bananarama ones of "Venus" & "I Heard A Rumour"...and maybe the Mel & Kim ones...I do have that 3 CD Hit Factory set, which is fun...

    Adore your reviews. Great fun and hilarious! Pete had the eye patch as he'd just had a nose job and hated it and wore the patch as a distraction for people. Steve, Mike and Tim are the others. Spin me was actually on the U.K. charts for over 5 months (longer than any Beatles song) and held the world record for any No. 1 song that took the longest amount of time to get there. D or A had many other top 40 hits and were huge in Japan.

    They started off as an indie band in 1980 in Liverpool with many line-up changes. This line-up (1983-1988) was the most successful commercially and they were massive in Japan for while. I used to see Pete Burns a lot around Liverpool in the early days. He worked in a record shop called Probe and if somebody bought a record he didn't like, he would hold it at arm's length and say "What are you buying this shit for?" hahaha

    R.I.P. the late, great Pete Burns. He was definitely a one-off, unique and totally unapologetic legend. He had such amazing charisma and perhaps the most piercing, waspish wit that could cut people in half! To say he was a complex individual is an understatement.....and he was probably his own worst enemy. But he certainly made an impact during his time on earth - sad that he left us too early.

      Not all of Europe. She failed to have any major hits at all in the UK, arguably the most important/influential market behind the USA. 3 songs reached the top 100. Her single everlasting love hit number 45 in 1987. Very few, if any, people will remember her in the UK or Ireland, let alone label her as a 'legend'.

    • @nunogouveia6458
      @nunogouveia6458 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@scottjefferson884 yes, Sandra never really made it in UK and Irland but was huge in Germany, Poland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and other European markets - she was bigger than Sabrina or Samantha Fox. "Maria Magdalena" was released in 1985 peaked #01 in 8 European countries, #02 in 5 countries, #03 in other 3 countries - and TOP 5 in many more. It only achieved #13 on Eurochart Hot 100 because it did not peak at same time in all countries. Despite that it sold over 250k singles in France and also over 250k in Germany. In 1986 the song was year end best selling song in South Africa.

    • @paraickenny8979
      @paraickenny8979 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottjefferson884 I don't know whether you made this statement to dismiss Sandra or show off your musical knowledge, but you're wrong on both counts. I'm from Ireland and I bought Sandra's first album ("The Long Play" which includes "Maria Magdalena") at the time of its original release and have bought everything she's recorded subsequently (and it's a pretty substantial output). While it's true she doesn't have a huge fanbase here or in the UK, it's a ridiculous generalisation to suggest that no-one here knows her. Yes, the PWL remix of "Everlasting Love" was her biggest hit here, but you seem to be underestimating the sheer volume of physical records one had to sell back then to reach #45. The track got a huge amount of club and radio play, and many of her other songs were regular fixtures on MTV Europe, not to mention Pete Waterman himself (of said PWL) actively plugging the single on his hugely popular "Hitman and Her" TV show. I have spoken to many people in the British Isles over the years who have bought a single here, an album there, and still remember her fondly. It's a very different story in the rest of Europe, where she was genuinely HUGE, and would definitely be considered a musical legend by many. Personally - being Irish - I wouldn't call her a "legend", I consider her to be A FREAKIN' EURODANCE GODDESS!!!

    Supposedly Pete Waterman (from the record label Stock, Aitken & Waterman) said to Pete Burns "we can't do this, it's music for Queers!" and Pete (god rest his soul) turned round "yeah but it's music for Queers that people will love!" 😄...

    Yes 4 people in the band but with this Song only one needed lead singer, the other 3 were redundant on it 😂 good old Stock , Aitken and Waterman!

    "Lover come back to me" (1985) and "Something in my house" (1986) are also very good titles and have amazing videos.

    One of my favorite 80s songs with the same high energy beat is "Blue Monday" by New Order. Check it out.

    Citation: Burns was "a cross between Oscar Wilde and Dorothy Parker... you don't get more brilliant than that."

    An interesting history behind Pete Burns and his physical transformation . He never made another hit like this but it was not easy, really .
    Thanks , Dereck . I come from the eighties and is very interesting viewing your reactions to this music.

    Try the Communards version of "never can say goodbye", its a typical 80s song/video (official) especially with the dancing, and of the same music genre.
