1983 RZ350 Pipe Swap Comparison with Butt Dyno Run (and other stuff)

  • In this video my friend brought some custom RZ350 expansion chambers over to my house for test fitment onto a US style RZ350. The 83 in my garage falls into this category. Prior to fitting these pipes onto this bike, I did a butt dyno run with the currently fitted Toomey pipes. I ran into some issues fitting the new pipes onto the bike. Ultimately, I decided this near museum quality first year motorcycle should be brought back to full stock configuration. There is some carburetor jetting and then ended up with the bike all stock again.

What rpm and speed figures did you get when you tested them? You need a stretch of road with "markers" could be whack it when I pass "this tree" at 5k in 2nd then take which gear I'd got up to, rpm, and speed readings when I pass "that road sign", any "marker" will do but it has to be consistent, I used to make pipes and sometimes you'd swear blind the bike was faster cos it was more vicious when the power hit but in reality wasn't as quick as a pair which felt more tame.

Yes, the true measure of horsepower is through the butt Dyno. Butt you already knew that.

Toomey chambers aren’t what they’re cracked up to be! If you get formula for building chambers you’ll see the stinger portion is to short and the I.D. Is too big. Like most things it’s a compromise. I corrected mine and the difference is night and day!
