Cool break. I've never seen one of those boxes broken. I do have to say it was causing me a lot of anxiety watching how he seemed more worried about hiding the cards than handling them with care.
I have to share this quick story with everyone. My first son was born in 97 and I had just got out of the Marine Corps as well. I decided to start collecting basketball cards starting with his birth year. I went to a Walmart in San Diego and saw these boxes of Topps Chrome with the sample card of John Starks on the front and thought, "these look cool", and bought a box. Guys...these boxes of cards were on sale for TWENTY FRIGGIN DOLLARS. They were on the shelf of items they were trying to get rid of. After I opened the box, I thought, I may just go back and get the last 2 boxes I saw to attempt to finish the set. I got 3 of these boxes for 60 bucks and some change, ended up with THREE Kobe rookies and sold them all to a card shop for 300.00 bucks. But anyway, how crazy is that? I'm guessing because stores were basically trying to get of these boxes of chrome it made the rookies even more rare. I'd bet some stores threw alot out when they didn't sell🤣🤣🤣
This was fun. I just sold the complete Chrome set (less the Kobe) a few weeks ago. I was worried about the greening over time. I do have the regular 96 Topps set + all inserts. Iconic. I loved this!
just did a little math on these boxes 20 packs × 4 cards per pack gave you 80 total cards subtract the inserts which would be another 6 cards on average leaves you 74 cards being its a 220 card set would take an average of 3 boxes to make that set back then which means you might pull a Kobe Rookie at an average of 1 per 60 packs way shorter print run then Jordan's. That Kobe Rookie is still way under priced when you compare it to lebrons or Currys chrome rookies
Well for Jordan that another 12 years of circulation, there are far less in perfect condition. It is all about scarcity and demand. And they don't print the same amount of every card so your math doesn't matter. Perhaps there are far less Lebron's on the market.

Unbelievable how well those cards were centered. Almost all of them seemed to be well centered.
