  • A playing comparison of the Softone Bucket Mute versus the Humes & Berg Bucket Mute.
Neither of these companies asked me to review/compare their products. Both of these mutes were bought with my own personal money, and the reviews are honest and genuine thoughts.

Thanks, Jeremy! I did watch both. Without going into a whole novella, I found your video as well as others when I started looking for a practice mute that might work on a bell front baritone. Actually a sax guy and former band director, I lost my right hemisphere and left side of my body to a major stroke 13 years ago. I went to work with a friend's saxophone players last week and she asked if I would like to use a baritone and sit in with her beginners. By doing this, I can start to regain my music (which was totally obliterated by the stroke). I live in a high-rise apartment building and need to mute a bell that I can't shove a straight practice mute into. Any suggestions for an 11.5" baritone bell??

Nice comparison. I personally prefer the softtone for the reasons you mention, but also because it is basically impossible to scratch your bell with it. It's too easy to scratch your bell with those H&B clips, especially during a fast mute change.
My question: in a big band trombone section, do you think it matters for all 4 bones to use the same kind of bucket? Or are the sounds similar enough that it doesn't matter?

Thanks, Eric, for watching! From a trombonist's perspective, the sound is similar enough to get the job done but we also know the convenience factor for those quick mute changes. However, a band leader or someone else may wonder why we're putting a 'beret' over our bell. Case in point, I recently took both mutes to a gig not knowing what the other players used beforehand. Thankfully when I showed up, the rest of the section used the softone or something similar. Sometimes convenience is the best answer unless someone specifically says otherwise. Hope this helps! - Jeremy
