Did We Choose The Right Boat? (HH44 vs HH52)

  • How a boat ages says a lot about the build materials and quality. And, there just so happened to be a three-year-old HH on display at the La Grande Motte boat show. Which prompted us to hop in the camper van and drive the 9 hours from Italy to France. (Ok, that plus the temptation of all the other new catamarans we could step foot on.)
    Plus, HH just announced the new and highly tempting HH52 which naturally leads to the question, should we upgrade?

    WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.
    We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
    Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
    We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.

    Love the little model at 0:56...it's the little things that count. And even if all you know for other languages are Spanglish and Polynesian greetings, that's still better than no knowledge! Motivate yourself to pick up more languages! As Federico Fellini once said, a different language is a different vision of life. To have another language is to possess a second soul. So by learning another language, you're opening the door to that culture and thus a new perspective. Opening ourselves up by learning other languages...is how we grow as people. It's another way of appreciating the world surrounding us. If you talk to a person in a language they understand, that goes to their head. But to them in their own language, that goes to their heart.

    I really like the sugar scoops that fold up, it seems like a good safety feature from both a following sea point of view but also for safety when you are on deck. You guys see soooo excited about your new boat, and that's a fun thing Keep the good stuff coming guys.

    • @monicapuccetti3310

      And safety for landing fish, granted our sugar scoops are much smaller as we’re only 38 ft but I have not been comfortable with my husband going down there to land a big fish while underway, they really can thrash and it’s not much space (he does have he hand holds but I’d be much happier with the fold up sugar scoops). Alas our budget was not a new boat boat so we’ll be happy with our 38 ft 11 year old boat and I’ll just make him clip in when there’s a big fish on.

    Love seeing your excitement over this stuff! This really is like watching two kids in a toy shop. This was a neat tour! Though I still think you chose the right one. When you decide to make a big purchase of a mode of transport, you look for the one that speaks to you. And the boat you ended up selecting spoke to you!
    Fun fact: The flag at 1:49 is the civic ensign of the British Virgin Islands! The ordinary British Virgin Islands flag is dark blue! The flag and its coat of arms has been in use since 1960! It features St. Ursula holding a gold oil lamp and surrounded by eleven lamps. These eleven lamps represent her 11,000 virgin followers. These islands would be named after these followers by Columbus in 1493 as the BVI's many islands reminded him of them. Below the shield is a banner that says "Vigilate" which is the territory's motto and means "Be watchful" in Latin. Although what is now BVI was claimed by the Spanish in 1555, they didn't build any settlements there and the Dutch were the first to live there until 1666 when English planters forced the Dutch to leave.

    Technically, the HH52 is the upgraded version of the HH55, not the HH50. The HH52 is 55.9 feet making it even longer than the HH55 which is 54.9 feet long according to HH Cats website. I think the HH44 will be perfect for you guys but I think Jason's eyes light up a little bigger whenever the HH52 is mentioned 😜🤩But the question everybody else is asking...did you get a dishwasher?

    • @darren5472
      @darren5472 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the 52 uses the same bottom mould as the 50 and has a new top to upgrade the design. The extra length comes from a longer bowsprit, which inturn increases sail area and power. HH recently released a video about the new 52. Looks like the future of cat sailing to me. 😊

    • @ganzonfamily
      @ganzonfamily ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@darren5472 The bowsprit is not included when measuring a boat's length. I believe the HH52 comes from an entirely new mould because the designs of the helms are quite different from the older models, which employ a raised helm position.

    Puhhhleaseeee upgrade sizes. It's all i've thought since I saw the 44. The extra Length and Width make such a difference living on board. The cost is considerable sure, but this boat will be in your life for a long time coming. No sense not getting exactly what you wanted, and resenting the size difference after the fact Love your content guys, living the dream!

    Just a suggestion to think about with lots of tea drinking... Tea and coffee are considered the strongest inhibitors of iron. A cup of tea reduces iron absorption by about 75%-80%, and a cup of coffee by about 60%. The stronger you make them, the greater the effect will be. So it's best to avoid tea and coffee while eating and for two hours before and after the meal. I hope you find this useful and helpful. Thank you for your great content and cheerful energy! Good luck with the new boat!!

    Have you made a decision on whether or not you're going to get any type of lightening deterrence installed on your new build?

    Top quality fun content as always. Indeed the 3 years old HH50 looks pristine, although would have add young children in for those last 3 years with the cubic rule aging process applied, the cabinetry would at least look 9 years old 😅. True story from a father of growing toddlers. Thank you guys, cheers from northern France !
