Seeing you get buffed by that Druid, and then you bowing and cheering, was oddly emotional. That was what MMOs used to be, people helping each other out in order to survive against this hardcore world! Very comfy video man, thanks.

I loved sitting at noob yards just to buff/summon things for noobs and also helped pull corpses out of dungeons. Helping someone out was more rewarding than getting XP. This type of community still exists in EQ 1999. Please subscribe for future EQ vids!

yeah man, didnt need seasons or battle passes or any of this massive world boss raidboss with shiny effects etc, just need a few monsters hanging out there in the wilderness, and for those monsters to be scary and powerful.
i think a lot of futuristic and modern mmos fail to understand that when everyones a hero, nobody is. im tired waking up on a beach as the chosen one in a wave of other chosen ones. why we all chosen? doesnt feel special at all. everyones doing insane whirlwind spinning godlike attacks through the air and doing identical enormous big critical h its. its boring.
the world needs to be really, really difficult. then you can actually create scenarios in which you DO NOT feel like a hero to make you appreciate one, and eventually becoming one.
you used to get level 60s hanging out in the newb zones ALL THE TIME because of this. you dont see that in new areas unless the guy is a streamer or showing off his store mount collection.
i remember, there used to almost ALWAYS be a level 20-ish druid sat at the bottom of the Kelethin elevator, ready to buff any new players. the dude literally is preferring to go help lowbies instead of grind his own levels out because he knows how tough the game is for new players, and how strong and helpful buffs are from high level players when you're low level. That feeling of helping people, of knowing you're contributing to others in a meaningful way, is a part of what we all crave as human beings, and EQ got it bang on. troubled to think of another game thats got it right, since.
WoW maybe? with its crafting difficulty / time constraints, and the fact grinding was so boring against weak monsters, or waiting for incredibly rare boss drops. gear was much more of a 'thing' in a WoW because of that, and youd find crafters to be quite respected people, friends with a lot of people. but in EQ, mostly all elements of gameplay were like that.

I made the trip from Grobb to Freeport then Qeynos a week after the launch of EQ. I met the majority of my friends on that trek that I still talk to today. I made the journey from Oggok to Neriak and that felt like this incredible adventure
We were around level 9-10, on Rallos Zek, so we had to survive all the scary mobs (like sand giants in the desert) as well as other players
Then I went exploring Neriak and some random fucking NPC guildmaster killed me because apparently there was a faction thing with troll shadowknights and ogre shaman

Well I think this game looks great to this day. This was the first pure 3d MMO in my opinion....Ultima Online was awesome but had a very different feel and taste when it comes to where you exist in the game. EQ was immersive and I just could not wait to explore all the zones....to see what might lie in this house or what could be behind that corner. If you ask yourself if you had one game to play for the rest of your life on an a deserted island, what would it be? I think EQ would be my choice.

I still have my beta discs for Everquest. Playing Ultima Online at the time... Rumors filled the air with a new 3D type adventure MMORPG. Yes, it was Everquest!! Zoning in for the first time as a Dark Elf to that dark forest and skeletons. Slowly finding your way thru the forest to Commonlands and Desert of Ro. Running from LockJaw while working experience on the beach. Waiting outside the Fear Gate in that dark room, hoping you get your body and stuff back those first few weeks that Fear was tried. The horrifying wipes to Cazic Thule and Innoruuk. Late night pick up groups to farm Fear and Hate for the class gear. The excitement of our guild Paradigm downing Tunare for the first time ever. Racing with Euro guilds to get the spawn times of bosses on US times. LOL, it was all just one big adventure that i don't think can ever be fully realized again.

Makes me think fondly of the old days. I can't even remember the name of the dungeon (the one with paladin and undead frogs) - but I once ran a low-level fighter (8 th?) to the dungeon to pick up free armor drops in the high lev dungeon. It was possible because of the faction / reputation. It really antagonized some high lev trolls that were farming the dungeon since the level gap prevented them from attacking me - good times
