    Ahh Everquest. Nothing since has been able to captivate me like you did. I was young, the internet was young and so too was the genre. Truly, that was a time of high adventure! I count myself fortunate and grateful to have played the game in its prime - halcyon days my friends !

      First time playing this game, got stuck for 4 days killing repetitive mobs in a dwarven fortress entrance area. Horrible boring grindfest of a game, whoever thinks this game is good is nostalgia blinded or just like boring grinding gameplay, and i say that for all mmos in general, terrible genre. If i wanted to play a grindfest game at least i want engaging gameplay, there are none in this game, just a target and wait combat, no strategy, nothing.

      I agree so much, I just tried playing dc heroes. Too much like wow, it’s just walk through button spamming & the game guides you step by step to almost literally everything. There’s no strategy or tactics to accomplishing anything . I never found a replacement for eq. I know it changed after the lost dungeon expansion, level 100 & mercs!! I setup my dual box again and with mercs I could afk level in the hole. I grounded out like 200AA points & 70th level or something before I got bored

    Great summary! The game is brutally hard... and amazingly rewarding. I played the original on day 1 of release and plan to recreate my Enchanter this coming Friday, 20 years later. Still keep in touch with many internet friends from those days and married a Bard whom I met in game. If it is half as fun the 2nd time around, I'll be playing for a long while.

    This game was so damn cool at the time though. I started it late, pre luclin, everquest trilogy era, but man it was so awesome. Two RL friends started with me at the time. I was a wood elf warrior, they were human paladin and half elf rogue. They were in Freeport I was in Kelethin that first boat ride toFreeport, man that was epic. Another cool memory I have is on a boat ride back to Faydwer, a fellow Wood elf warrior was there, we got to talking, we were around the same level I think around 16ish or so. He showed me this awesome secret at the time that if you let the boat run you over while in the water, it will glitch you into the boat, thus enabling you to get back on. He also showed me a cool camp in Ocean of tears, the two spires that the boat passes between has a bunch of sirens on it, that dont social agro when you figjt them, they stay dark blue for like 8 levels. When you want to leave, watch for the boat, swim out and let it run you over and you are on your way. I still remember that Wood elf warrior's name, Terek, seventh hammer server, baby!

    My favorite memory, strangely enough, is the time I snuck down into a dungeon that was way past my level and got killed. I think it was Lower Guk (?) Luckily, a Necromancer happened to be in the same area and went back in with me to help summon my corpse. Good times! EQ was great because it was risky; I've never played another game that made you feel like you were putting everything on the line like that if you went poking around somewhere you shouldn't be.

      A couple of friends of mine made a similar mistake and entered Sol B at about level 18 and died very very quickly, unfortunately for them it was also bugged at the time and the mobs stayed at the zone in point, right on top of their corpses.
      We tried to get some higher level guys help us retrieve their stuff but as the highest person on the server was only level 35 and he almost died himself trying to pull the mobs away they really were out of luck.
      Needless to say their corpses eventually rotted and they lost all their equipment, but the higher level guys we asked for help donated whatever spare items they had to at least get them somewhat equipped again...EQ really was a social and gameplay experience like no other that I don't think will ever happen again.

    It really boggles me that WoW became such a big success despite all the glaring flaws of Classic WoW.
    People rant about the "sense of community", while also being completely fine with HALF the population of the server being split from eachother in both economy, CHAT, and grouping.
    If done in the name of "lore", why then in WC3 and in subsequent WoW cutscenes do Horde/Alliance characters all communicate the same language?
    The Undead playable race as a whole is the largest mess of a playable race that likewise are a clear lack of "lore" as an excuse. WC3 was spent wallowing in agony watching Azeroth be ravaged by the undead scourge, just for a few years to pass and people are now accepting and welcoming of the Forsaken into the Horde? They can just wander on into Thunder Bluff and be welcomed warmly? Like what?
    Even Classic WoW is such a breeze for getting to max level it's no wonder chats and low level economy doesn't exist because everyone wants to run the same three raids on repeat.
    On the note of low level, the amount of trash and non-loot drops is truly disgusting. Little to no drops from pre-60/50 mobs have anything of value to the endgame world, to the point where you spent 90% of your Crafting Profession vendoring all the garbage you make.
    The fact that an item as simple as Bone Chips dropped from lvl 1, 2, or 3 skeletons can be crucial and needed for lvl 50 Necromancers is prime example of consciencious loot design.

    I remember my first experience in EQ fondly and vividly. I created a high elf wizard in Felwithe. While exploring the newbie area around the castle entrance, I noticed a path leading off into the woods and decided to check it out. There I was, running along that dark trail, my awareness limited by the 1st person view, when I heard that distinctive growl of an Orc Pawn, as he jumped out of the shadows at me from behind. I nearly crapped myself, as he proceeded to stomp me into jelly. That experience taught me right away that danger was lurking all around, and that this was no ordinary game. I couldn't get enough.

    I once did a pickup raid in the plane of fear while my entire extended family was at my house for Easter. I barely said hello to anyone while spending over 5 hours on corpse recovery. This game was a serious addiction for me when I was younger. My friend who got me in into it failed college classes due to raiding.

    Played this from 1999 through to 2005, and I still have my original character (65 High Elf Enchanter). There has been nothing like this since in terms of engagement, immersion and social interdependence. Made friends with people across the world who we grouped with daily. Made my initial fortune making Banded Armor for tank classes.

I remember seeing the beauty of the mountains and fear of the dreadlands... Firiona Vie and even places I remember dying in like Sol B. So many memories. Going on raids to the plane of Fear or Growth etc. I was a Bard, so I didn't get much. Hi. I really want to play this game again because of how much I truly loved it back in the day. I went to the project 1999 site & (unless I misread it) you need to install a copy of EQ Titanium in order to play. I looked on ebay to buy a copy & there were only 2 for sale & both were over $100. Is there any way around this? Did I misread something? Any light you can shine on this matter for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Fuck another thing I loved about this was that they had languages in the game that you could learn by speaking them. So sometimes you could talk with your buddies in their native language if you knew it like, say you and your gnome buddy, and you guys speak gnomish, you could be like, "man, this stupid human has no idea how to tank!" Or whatever. To your gnome friend it would say Soandso says in Gnomish, but if other players dont speak gnomish it would say, Soandso says in an Unknown Tongue and the text would be all jumbled up. Man that was fun haha talking smack on people in Elder Dragon hahaha

    The freedom and toolkit EQ gave players was amazing. No locked encounters, meaningful long duration buffs, crazy amountof utility spells and clicky items. I remember being a level 10 bard, running aroind in RM offering high level soloers to exchange their gold for plat, or guard camps where you'd sell stuff for them so they didn't have to leave and then you got 30% cut, making 300 plat an hour without fighting a single mob. Or random people you helped out once remembering you and shooting you a tell to join thieir camp or raid, even whole guilds launching rescue missions at midnight to get another guild their corpses back bc they wiped in fear, good times. Other games can only dream of that level of interaction lol

    Hype~
    (But RIP pet window; and RIP race/class xp penalty lifts - the only things I'll miss from Blue/Red. The xp penalties don't even make sense to add back, as if classic rangers were ever good at all eheh. Even then, troll and future iksars even make sense without xp penalty due to severe faction penalties - you'll spend your entire char career just barely fighting for even dubious)

    • @Throneofliesgame
      @Throneofliesgame 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Andrew Lambert yea I'm 30 something years old and have to level 60 percent+ slower to play the race class combo I want. If anything you'd think a boost in xp since we're not 15 anymore with unlimited time. That's my only grump about it. Devs did a great job, but sadly it's no longer "play the class/race you like to play".

    • @MorrolanTV
      @MorrolanTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The class xp penalty is unfortunate, I agree. It's technically classic but I feel like 99% of the playerbase agrees the game is better without it. Seems like we could make an exception in cases of EXTREME consensus. But I think the devs are very principled about sticking to classic as closely as they can.

    I spent 6 years on this game as a BST. You're right, learning the game, was tough. Fucking BST coudlnt' fit in to anything. Eventually I got top gear and started tanking and pulling super efficiently. I almost always had a group, but it took like 1 or 2 years to establish myself. It was tough, but earned, and awesome.

    That is as far as I played the first time. After months of solo play, I was lvl 32 and fell down a hole with high levels and could never get my gear back. Plus I lost levels trying to get it. I didn't find out until like a year later that some classes could summon my corpse.

    Man, I would love to play EQ on P99 again. But no shot I am going to grind those hell levels again. It's so exhausting if you're not being power-leveled.
    I wish they implemented an exp rate modifier for alts after you hit 60 once. Nothing crazy, maybe a 50-60% increase. Something like that.
