According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)-World Economic Outlook (WEO) report, Bangladesh’s per capita GDP will exceed India’s for the first time this year. In episode 592 of Cut The Clutter, Shekhar Gupta talks about how Bangladesh has been ahead of India in almost all major social indices but per capita GDP, and why we must question the government about how India lost its growth surge and lost this advantage too.

Napoleon's quote has come true in Bangladesh - “Give me an educated mother, I shall promise you the birth of a civilized, educated nation.” People will talk about the country's export, labor force but the actual change that happened in Bangladesh is the empowerment of women. This does not get many headlines. If you go to random rural areas in Bangladesh you will now hardly find a woman in her early 20s without primary education. This woman has a smartphone and also has a mobile bank account with either Bkash, or Nagad and has a side business (farming, etc) of some kind supporting her husband. This was unbelievable only 15 years ago. I am no soothsayers, but this improvement in Bangladesh is just the beginning. Unless some cataclysmic event happens Bangladesh will rise higher and higher.
It is also a fact that in terms of manpower India is far superior to Bangladesh, but utilizing that manpower and resource efficienctly to grow at a higher pace than Bangladesh is another topic altogether.

Quite amusing to see so many people to be shocked by this news.
We should've already expected this to happen, sooner or later.
Since 2017, Bangladesh's economy has grown faster than ours. While we grew at 7.2% in 2017, 6.8% in 2018 and 4.2% in 2019, Bangladesh had grown at 7.3% in 2017, 7.9% in 2018 and 8.2% in 2019.
Also, Bangladesh has developed faster than us. In the past 10 years, Bangladesh's HDI grew at 1.40% per annum, higher than India's 1.35% per annum.
And lastly, Bangladesh has also controlled its population much better than India. Where India's fertility rate is 2.2, Bangladesh's fertility rate is 2.0
So yes, they've beaten us at every level,
not to mention U-19 cricket world cup
    Unfortunately today,
    India is Poor but Proud
    Instead,
India needs to become Rich but Humble
That should be our agenda, not caste-religion politics.

Bangladesh is trying very hurt to convince Myanmar to take all of their people back. That’s why Bangladesh is working hard to pacify China so that they can create pressure but Myanmar is not doing anything. Then even in the court they are just saying that they would take.
Lot of rohingya are depressed because of that torture which they endured. Myanmar have frightened them a way that even the rohingya are feeling unsafe to go back. But still Bangladesh is trying their best whether it is to take care of them or something else. Absolutely if rohingya are feeling unsafe so in that case if those torturers doesn’t get punished they will not agree till then. Bangladesh can’t force them but they are trying their best to send them to Myanmar everyone have to put pressure on Myanmar then Myanmar government will punish the criminals and then it will solve till then don’t know

We should not live in a dream world. It is a fact that Bangladesh, Srilanka and Maldives are much better than us in HDI (Human Development Index) for last few years even if they have less GDP than us. The HDI encompasses (1) Long and healthy life (2) Access to knowledge (3) Decent standard of living.
The GDP does not provide a clear picture. Although Maharashtra has the highest GDP in India but Kerala is number one in HDI.

    • @amanshukla8758
      @amanshukla8758 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Just a small correction, mate.
Actually India has higher HDI than Bangladesh, as per capita GDP is not the only thing that determines HDI.
India has 0.647, while Bangladesh has 0.614.
Still, Sri Lanka and Maldives have higher HDI than India. (very high, in fact)
But the more important thing here is, that in the past 10 years, Bangladesh's HDI has grown at a higher rate, 1.40% per annum, than India's 1.35% per annum.
So yeah, we've done a party bad job considering how East and Southeast Asian countries and also, our very own neighbours, have overtaken us in economy and development.

small developing countries have edge in terms of gdp...not only bangladesh but any small country with coastline (obviously to boost trade) have better gdp than india...well i am not defending govt here but people who are handling this should lay out separate action plans for different regions of india..like boosting tourism in north east...identifying areas with industrial prospect like rajasthan and so on...one more point to be added is to divide uttar pradesh into separate states as proposed by many intellectuals...as smaller state is more manageable and we all know that UP and bihar are worst performing states in terms of economy and are in news for all wrong reasons.

@darsh mart i am not giving excuse...i am telling you truth...neither i am trying to save govt coz it is shameful to go down to economy which was 40% lesser than india 5 years ago...i am just saying that gdp growth rate of smaller geographical nations tend to be higher side simply because they put all their resources mainly in one industry...cloth industry for bangladesh...electronics for vietnam...tourism for maldives...these countries make their laws in such a way that the industries which are major to their economy flourish and attract foreign investments...we cant do that in india because india is big...and resources differ from region to region...so thats why i said that action plan need to be made and rather states of india must be encouraged to focus on resources which they have in plenty...and when you give example of china remember my dear its not a democracy...so whatever sees good it goes through without thinking nature, people rehabilitation, protest are none and other things like that are not taken into account...i garauntee you if you give country even in my hands i will make india grow faster...but there is one condition that i will do whatever i see right without taking into consideration people's opinions...i give you small example...if three gorges dam would never had been built in india since it displaced million people, pose threat to downstream cities, destroyed wildlife in river valley and many things...but that dam was built in china and you never saw any protest...anyways the problem for india in increasing its growth is industrial sector...see the normal growth pattern is first you expand your primary sector , then secondary sector (industrial sector) and then services sector...india never expanded its industrial and leapfrogged directly to services sector...and thats why you are seeing large scale unemployment and other things which are harming economy...as we all know that these unemployment are mainly in industrial sector...services sector is the sector which is generating employment and is major contributor to economic growth of country...so as i was saying bangladesh economy is growing because they have put their resources mainly in cloth industry...and have laws in such a way to attract more foreign investments in this industry....i am not saying that all bangladesh do is cloth industry ...i am just saying since cloth export is their main export so they are encouraging more companies to come to bangladesh....economy is more complex than science my dear...its not like science that you change one factor then only one other factor will change...in economics if you change one factor then 100( not specific ...just a number) other factor start fluctuating...and then all you have to do is find a optimum point where your tradeoff between loss and gain is in your favour.

Dear Mr Sekhar Gupta: Today’s analysis was excellent. We need to admire and applause the leadership of Sheikh Hasina for earning the respect of her country Bangladesh in the indian subcontinent. We from our side should give the citizens of Bangladesh the due respect. I hope this shock, that we Indians got today, helps to correct the major mistakes that we did in the past 5/6 years. Let’s see how our political leadership responds to this reality, instead of blaming someone else. We should eliminate 2020 in our thinking process as Corona isn’t the factor for Bangladesh racing ahead of us.

It's terrible. My take is you won't grow if YOU CAN'T even EDUCATE & FEED your people. With it's HDI numbers B'desh would've eventually beaten us. Covid or no covid. Education is a great asset, person can take care of oneself, earn better, feed better n live longer, be entrepreneurial, be more aware of government services, stand up exploitation & what not.....even in a poor remote village...
People say we need economic reforms but I believe if we don't reform our ADMINISTRATION we can't go anywhere except the ditch of poverty.
    Businesses need
Stable rules ( see our convoluted tax & commerce rules)
Quick dispute resolution ( Courts overburdened)
Friendly Administration (well our bureaucracy is one of the worst, unaccountable n rent-seeking)
Many Indian districts are the size of New Zealand ( population). But governed by a Single overburdened IAS DM babu following orders from state capital. Local City people have extremely low say in local level policies. Even bare minimum infra needs sanction from capital, minister n bada Babu. Everything is at snails pace.
Administration is busy appeasing senior officers not serving people because their growth doesn't depend on City-elected Powerful Mayorz Office but on a senior Officer who cleared UPSC decades back. So most of them don't care about citizens or governance. I feel Hathras police would have behaved differently if they reported to local citizens (through a powerful Mayorz office) than state capital Officeers. Moreover, with third grade ground level staff they can't do much either, no matter how noble their intentions.
Our POLICE is governed by 1861 Act. Something as basic as separation of investigation & generic law n order Roles hasn't been carried out yet. Our policeman is a detective in the morning n standing at barricades in the afternoon for netaji. Learn from US...
Is this 18th century colonial 'governance' model a way to grow in 21ST CENTURY?

As a Bangladeshi it is really amazing to see how much the change has happened to our education, health, gender equality, banking and infrastructure for the last 7/8 years. Political stability is one of the key factors for the growth, second is effectively using human resources and lastly implementing practical strategic foreign policy. As a person like me, who happens to work with a lot of economic data as a professional, humbly like to argue that we are not even middle of our projected potential for 2030. Still a long way to go, specially in the field of establishing justice, practicing anti curroption and promoting more researched based corporations.

As a bangladeshi I think the india-bangladesh relation has declined for the following reasons in the last 5 years
    1. The Tista agreement- India has not shown any major initiative for solving the problem and we are deprived of water in the summer season and in the rainy season india opens the (Farakka)barrage to flood banngladesh and our northern part goes under water(even this year flooding has damaged people livelihoods agriculturally and economically)
    2. Border killing - The number of unnecessary killing in the border by BSF has not declined
    3. China's investment(financially and brainly) in all the major projects in Bangladesh
    4. Progressive relation with Pakistan- After Imran Khan became the PM, BD-Pak diplomatic relationship has substantially improved
    5. BD People's perspective about India has degraded negatively because of blaming bangladesh over and over about illigal immigration

That means they have a dream to make Bangladesh 'shonar Bangla' and they know very well how it looks like. And that also indicates that they are still very focused. India is not the standard they have considered, they have standardized their 'shonar Bangla' dream and they are just chasing it.

Sir, have a look at how Vietnam has progressed. Between 2000 and 2012, India and Vietnam were in pretty much in step with each other. Since then, they have reached $2,800 against Indian level of ~$1800-1900. The rate at which Thailand is growing is equally impressive. There are so many Indian companies which are preferring Thailand and Vietnam for incremental capital expenditure over India. I am a qualified economist and a professional investor and every day has been a nightmare for me since late 2016. Its like traveling in the last coach of a train, watching the train getting derailed around a bend ahead and having no power to do anything about it. Its really painful.
Having said that, I have the following two suggestions to remedy the situation:
    1. Prabhu Shri Ram should be declared an avatar of Modi.
    2. Instead of the Ram Temple, we should make a Temple for Modi.
These are the only priorities we seem to understand.
Its ridiculous how bad the governance has become. The rot which started with Pranav M becoming the FM, has been taken to another level due to the incompetence of the PM, FM Jaitley and whoever is posing as FM nowadays. Pathetic and no longer funny. Shame on these clowns for destroying the hardwork of PVNR and Dr MMS.

We recall the great leader Srimati Indira Gandhi who paid the highest honor to a new born country fifty years back. She understood that the healthy growth of neighbor Bangladesh is integral to India's development. Since we share the same climate, water source, culture and many other things, our fate is to a large extent common. We must not forget every third or fourth individual on earth is a South Asian. And despite recent progress, a big number of our people lives bellow poverty line. Let us forget whatever bitter things exchanged in the past. Let's work together for the people of this historic land. Every citizen of India and Bangladesh has a role on it. We should refrain from hate speeches. We should pay attention to the real concerns of our neighbors. A united South Asia will be a sustainable solution to all sorts of imperial interest whether it is Chinese or US.
