  • Each year is an opportunity to learn, and this year was no different.
In today's video, I take a look at the various lessons I've learned in my garden in 2020. I thought back to everything I've done so far, and pulled out the things that stuck out at me the most.
    We have swag! shop.nuweblarehomestead.com/
Nuwe Blare Homestead is a homestead in the Arizona desert. We (try to) grow our own food with our desert garden, we raise chickens and ducks for eggs, and we build the things we need. Homesteading in the harsh Arizona climate is not easy, but we are learning how to use the resources we have at hand to accomplish our goals. We're a South African-American family, so we occasionally share recipes for South African dishes.

Good job on using in ground gardens in Arizona! It's much more water efficient than raised beds. Don't get caught up in the hype of raised bed gardening y'all. It's not the appropriate garden tech for the drylands. In ground gardens and Sub-Irrigated Planters is where it's at. Grow more Food with Less Water.

Thanks! Yes, I agree. I have mentioned it in other videos as well, but raised beds in Arizona are a bad idea from a water conservation perspective. I know other people do it, and have success, but I'm pretty sure they could use less water if they had in-ground beds.

@@NuweBlareHomestead Agreed! Plus I'm getting massive food production out of my rainwater harvesting earthwork garden beds. Using way less water.

Yep, I grew chard in 2019, and it definitely LOVED the heat!

Thank you for sharing your lessons learned. I live in the high desert of CA; similar climate to AZ. We actually have two grow periods for potatoes- March and Sept. Mine are in the ground now and doing great 🌱🥔

I just planted my next batch of potatoes too. I'm hoping for a good harvest this time.

Is the grass Bermuda grass? That stuff has a huge root system. I used to spray it with roundup to kill it completely...

It's what we call "wire grass" out here, which I think is Bermuda grass. Yeah, it's a royal pain in the rear end. That's why I put the landscape fabric down on the walkways, because the grass was just invading everywhere, and the walkways were helping it spread. Hopefully now I'll be able to control it more.

Round up is poison and stays in the ground for a long time. It is proven to cause cancer. It should be removed from all stores. A man won a court case in California against it and won millions.... Though he's dying and leaving a family. Truly a sad story. People please don't use this stuff it can kill you.

This year was so freakin hot. My tomatoes toasted on the vine in may. I just let them go. I got a lot of fruit though

It was definitely hotter this year than last year! We still had really cool weather in May last year, but none of that this year. I was mentally prepared for that this year, but I wasn't actually prepared for getting things like tomatoes and peppers into the ground as soon as I should have. They're producing nice now though, thanks to the cooler weather.
