Very informative interview. Given the cost and how long it took to develop the f35 joint strike fighter, it will be interesting to see how successfully the US military develops drone capability.
I hear that Stacy observing that FPV drones are small and carry small warheads.
I don't hear WHY they're small. Is something preventing Ukraine from building a drone that delivers, say, an artillery shell? Yes, that's bigger, duh, but can we talk about what problems come with bigger? Where is the size cutoff? Are we only interested in drones that can be picked up by a person? Does the cost of drones rise non-linearly with weight? Why? Battery cost scales with weight and capacity, and those are the heaviest thing on the drone.
Ukraine has a pretty common large 8 motor model. I don't remember the name. I think pre-war, it was used in agriculture. (Possibly for spraying pesticides.) In general, fixed wing is more efficient than rotary wings, so I expect especially for heavier payload, fixed wing has an even more important advantage. But at artillery range, just using actual artillery to deliver artillery grenades, probably makes the most sense?! These small drones were / are in large a way to solve an artillery supply problem. There are hundreds of small private workshops, where people develope and assemble drones. I get the impresssion a lot of (young) people (including women) do this as their second job, to support the war effort. The Ukranian DOD isn't in control of this. It's grass root entrepreneur companies, having direct contact with the fighting units on the front. Remember some 20-25% (!) of war financing, is actually completely private sector, so my guess is they don't even rely on government funds for production. This is what makes it so dynamic! I seem to remember the Ukranian DOD tried to get a better grip the other month, and it involved some 300(!) manufacturers.
@@andersgrassman6583 Have you seen videos of artillery trying to hit a moving tank? It takes dozens of rounds, each one costing $4000. And dozens of rounds takes MINUTES to deliver, which is a major problem.
A $12,000 drone lifting a 15 kg 105mm shell (or an 7-9 kg anti-tank mine) over artillery ranges is more likely to hit the tank, sooner, at lower cost. Or at least, it would be if they could fix the jamming problem.
Ukraine effectively lost the war the day the Russians began beating them at their own game...FPV drone warfare.
Ukraine is still fighting;
no negotiation
