  • A walkthrough showing how to troubleshoot various battery issues (charging light blinking, battery not charging, charge not lasting as long as usual...) and how to replace the battery if needed.
APRIL 2022 UPDATE: If you need a battery troubleshooting and repair video for the 1000XM4s, I FINALLY posted that video. Check it out at this link: • SONY WH1000XM4 Battery...
Please comment below with any questions or feedback! I have lots of replacement parts for these headphones on my eBay store. Please use the following link if you need some parts :) www.ebay.com/itm/194819910342
If I'm currently out of batteries, please check out this Amazon listing for a high quality replacement battery: amzn.to/3w6moym
In the worst case scenario that your headphones are damaged beyond repair (R.I.P.) I'd highly recommend upgrading to the WH-1000XM4 model. The price different between the XM4 and XM3s is much smaller than I'd expect and usually Amazon is running some sort of fantastic deal :)
Check out the listing here: amzn.to/3ikSlLv
Also, I'm including links to the soldering station and precision screwdriver set I used in this repair that I've had for YEARS and use to fix everything. Check them out on Amazon here:
    Soldering Station: amzn.to/3i18eWX
    Precision Screwdriver Set: amzn.to/3q0BlOI
    Thanks and best wishes!

Excellent video, thanks for posting. I have the earlier 1000x and made the mistake of going out to the mail box in the rain without thinking. 15 mins after, they stopped working. With your video, I was able to disassemble quickly and remove the battery. Then left to dry for 48 hours, and still no luck. Then sprayed 90% alcohol around except speakers and mics, then left to dry for 48 hrs. Then, it worked!

    Thanks for walk through.
3 points that may be helpful.
    1) Removing the screws requires a #00 Phillips head screwdriver. I suggest you resist the urge to use a tiny flat blade screwdriver because that or a larger Phillips head can easily tear up the slots in the screws.
    2) The interior of the earpiece might be slightly different than the video but all the important pieces are in the same position.
    3) A tweezers will be quite useful in replacing the ribbon connector and putting the screws in place. (My fingers are just too bulky to do this easily.)

Oh wow, thanks for a good guide. I was having such a headache trying to figure out the rattling I heard in my right earcup. Dude seriously...THANK YOU! My unit wouldn't charge. It stated that its at 20%. Once plugged in, the led stays red for 10 minutes or so and then turn off. When I turn on the headset it immediately tells me that my battery is low. I tried every single USB-C cable and every charger and every computer with the same result. I was seriously going to just throw these away. Well after watching this video I decided I have nothing to lose since warranty is over so I unplugged the battery as instructed, left it alone for 10 minutes. Plugged it back in and immediately turning it back on and its at 100% charge. Keep it up man...you saving a lot of people money.

same, I don't have these but when it comes to bluetooth things, or even smartphones, how easy it is to replace the battery, and the availability of batteries is very important for long term usage if you really like the item, instead of having to upgrade every time the battery sucks

Thanks for the video! It helped a lot, although it is really not necessary to remove the cables, nor the sticker from the battery if you just want to troubleshoot a reset issue. Just unplug the power connector and that is it! Nothing else is necessary unless you really want to replace the entire battery...

Try holding the power button as you plug it in. "B A" mentioned this in another comment and it worked for me. Before, no red light. Now charging again. I was able to fix it before by disconnecting the battery but it only worked for one power cycle. Some posters suggest that maybe the problem is due to a defective sensor.

thx mate, I followed your advice to first disconnect the battery and then reconnect and charge, battery was full after 10 minutes charge, will test if it stays that way, all the best (after 5 minutes.....it stopped working again. same issue. not reacting to buttons.....maybe need to change the battery. (Update, when I wait, then charge it then sometimes after a 5 minute charge it goes on again and I can use it like normal, but then after a minute or so it stops again and doesnt react, seems a pcb problem from the battery (battery has a pcb). I will order first a new battery , then open the old one to see if battery of pcb is bad, put the new one inside and see if it solves my problem

Thanks for the video. I had the issue where, instead of charging and having a solid red light, the red light would flash continuously. After disassembling, I found the light could stay on solid if I wiggled the temperature sensor (the part held down by the first tape - the orange tab touching the battery). This is true even with the battery unplugged. Tracing the sensor cable back to the board, it was apparent one of the solder joints was only making intermittent contact. A little more wiggling and it came off entirely. I resoldered the sensor onto the board and now it charges perfectly.
Also it looked like the wiring had been factory reworked (poorly), so seems like Sony has some quality control issues. Very disappointing.
