One of the worst features of the Sun Star models, but not all, are the showy door gapes, I can't understand why they are not designed with more attention; Sun Star knows how to do the models well, I own some excellent ones, but it remains a step behind the latest generation ones, I hope they improve.
Usual open Sunstar models suffer from these bad gaps, especially on the doors. I only have a few European releases and one Mustang, and that's it. Haven't jumped on their models because of their quality. If they were priced more like Maisto, they would be better received, in my opinion. As for what to do, try building an old school garage diorama, make it a bit dirty and showcase it. I don't mind lower quality models if I paid peanuts for them, but if I have the time and space, I'd probably use them for diorama stuff.
I think you should customize it a bit and give it some patina, its ok for an old rusty car to have panel gaps! And maybe cover the ugly spare tire with some fabric? -and no, the quality/price is not ok
I had a similar experience with my Sun Star 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. One side is fine with decent gaps, the other side, the 2 doors don't shut all the way and the little triangular window is a bit misaligned like on your model, but bent towards the inside. That causes the rear door to not shut all the way. There is also a major gap between that window and the metal. At least mine has 1 good side, so I display that side out. I only paid $55 total shipped, so I'm not too upset. With yours, I don't think you'll get a better one if you exchange it. That huge gap between hood and doors is really bad design. Looks like it was done on purpose to compensate for a poorly designed hinge.
This was a 1st generation of SUN Star models, and yes, you are correct that the "Platinum's" are much better quality without the "Dogleg" hinges for the trunk, doors and hood. The trunk on this 53 Chevy has a spare tire that's supposed to simulate a tire cover, which is why it looks wanky.
SunStar is a strange producer. They're between a toy and model. So I couldn't buy W100 nor Lincoln limos for my collection. More than 100 bucks! :((( OMG, not worth more than 35. Anyway, hope to get W223 Maybach from Almost Real both for me and you, Marek. :))
I AGREE With You 125%..as in my opinion Road Signature Can Be Compared To the Quality Of Sun Star, if Not More ...Many of the really cheap MAISTO Die Cast , I Have Bought ($15-$20)..Have there PAINT QUALITY. Comparable /Compatible To AUTO WORLD ($80-$300)..in my opinion
Sun Stars truly are hit and miss. I have a few, but pointedly, I have 63 Falcon I love but then a platinum series 1960 Fury, which had clear vinyl stickers over the emblems that took some of them with them when removed..and the gummy upholstery print on the seats. The platinum series are packed in Styrofoam and Styrofoam can gas out and react with other plastics and the longer they’re in the Styrofoam the worse they get. These platinum series are 200 buck plus models, and thats a lot to pay for disappointment.

Compared to it's competition at that time "Welly, Maisto, and Motor Max" Sun Star was pretty good. The Sun Star Platinum Collection is the 3rd generation models, and obviously they've come a long way. Sun Star Platinum Collection competes with the likes of Autoworld, Acme, Autoart and Highway 61. They may have a way to go to be Norev, Paragon and GMP, but for the high detail, quality and cost, you cannot beat Sun Star.

I know this feeling. And those dog leg hinges are craptacular.
I usually receive broken and destroyed models but not really low quality from the factory models.

that "foil" was clear plastic. I think they were trying to go for a "cover" on the spare tire.

Sun Star makes great looking model cars. i like them even better than Road legends or Road signature.
