When I was young (1970s), "Bad kits" were the norm. They all had flash, sink holes, warpage, dodgy decals, and every other sort of common complaint without exception. But bad kits made me a better modeler.
I have a handful of bad kits in my stash, specifically because they are bad. They’re almost all old-tooling Airfix that have been replaced with new-toolings. There’s a part of me that looks to them the same way that people comb junkyards for a special project, getting a wreck to see what can be made with the “canvas”.
I'm kinda shocked that the Yak-15 was here, because I thought the end result for you looked absolutely lovely. It wasn't a good kit but it's a cheap accessible kit that I think looks lovely! But the Spitfire, despite having lovely markings I will not argue with because it's not a good kit.
Thank you very much! The tamiya panzer suffers from a mould misalignment on every part resulting in seams that need removing, not to mention the instructions are sub-par (and only in japanese for the painting ones) which is why it was an honourable mention here
Nice video, Tou do seem to make very small scales. I only make 1:48 and slightly larger. but I do enjoy watching your builds. A;; the best for the new year.
You do have the ability to take a sub-standard kit and make a decent build. Your reviews and builds have really helped. I would also like to give a New Year Cheers! To all here.
Great vid and you managed to make some beautiful finished examples out of them. I do have two of the kits you listed on order at the local hobby store (the YaK 15 and PzII…), so I’m looking forward to adding these to my collection. Thank you for all the build and review vids last year….they helped me out lots!
I built the old Airfix Wellington made of hard silver plastic. The fit was excellent. I built the same kit from a much later pressing in black plastic. It was very dodgy and the plastic soft. Over the years those tools did wear out. A well built old kit can still be a source of joy and give a sense of accomplishment.
I think many years ago there was an article in the airfix magazine to convert the yak 9 with a engine off the 262 and loads of filler, tempted now to go through my back issues to find it,must have been 1971 or 72 as I remember doing the gladiator on floats and waiting a week for the car filler to set and plasticard from shirt collars.
You're right, there was. I no longer have the 1972 Airfix Mags but it was definitely that year. The same article also covered converting the Yak 9 kit to a Yak 1 and a Yak 3. Neither of them would have been very accurate, any more than the original kit is, but that just reflects the state of knowledge about Russian aircraft at the time.
I got a model of hms hood from airfix 2 years ago took for ever to build flashing in nearly every part when building had so many alignment issue resorted to using a soldering iron to melt plastic to fill gaps
I'm a long-time modeler, and I'm currently working on a "river port" city in HO Scale. What I have discovered is a puzzling thing in that it seems like NOBODY builds model kits in the 1:87th scale, unless the company is dedicated strictly to model railroad buildings and such. Would LOVE some Scale helos, and Warbirds, Armor, and such in FAITHFUL 1:87TH SCALE! Any ideas?
for subjects in scales such as this, 3D printing may be the solution. As you mention, unless a company is making HO scale models specifically, you are not going to find that many compatible products from other manufacturers. Unfortunately in your case, the most popular closest scale is 1/72, but will look noticeably large on your layout. OO gauge modellers have the same problem, but with the 1/72 models being a bit smaller The reason companies don't move into 1/87 is because scales such as 1/72 are already established and very popular as they stand, it does not make financial sense for companies to move into these scales when they know they will sell well in the more traditional ones
@ModelMinutes Thanks for your reply. (*sigh*) Yeah, that's the same conclusion I came to. It's purposeful, and they're only shooting themselves in the pocketbook. Aside from the appalling retail prices! Especially considering how old the tooling for their mainstay models must be. I'm 64, and the retail price of, say, the Revell, or AMT, 1/32 '40 Ford Coupe, which my DAD built before I was born, tended to cost ME $3.75--4.00! Don't you reckon that set of molds is PAID-FOR by NOW?!? Sorry for the rant. My current project, as I said, is basically an HO scale railroad layout without the railroad. I live in a one-bedroom apartment, and am making an attempt at making a room appear bigger by actually taking up space, and it's WORKING! But the scheme includes a V.A. Hospital, with a typical landscaped front entrance, so I need the ubiquitous small collection of military vehicles set on the lawn, on display as a bracket for the hospital's formal sign. So I've found printed hueys, ambulance tracks, Deuce-and-a-half ambulance, and a jeep, all spiffed-up so patients and families can wander around, of a sunny day. This will include a rooftop heli-pad and Med-Evac chopper, the Hospital campus being a teaching-and-trauma-center sorta place. The rest of the diorama consists of a waterfront business district, behind which will be an assortment of various tall buildings that will also act as my window blinds. When finished, these buildings will be lit, as well as the streets, so that when it gets dark, all the actual outside-world street lighting will blend into the scale streets, kinda making the walls "disappear", See, I live in the top-floor apartment facing the Main Drag of my town. So I'm going to try to "bring the lights inside" after dark, as well as something attractive for people passing by to look at, instead of the P.O.S. mini-blinds I have now, while still having an actual privacy "blind". That's the plan, anyway.
I've just binned the Roden 1/72nd Bristol Fighter. Had a bit of a struggle with it so put it back in the box for a month. Took it out after Christmas, did my very best then confined it to the bin.

It also taught me how to scatchbuild so now I sratchbuild large parts of my models. But hey thats why we love our hobby.
I have a question about attaching wiring/rigging to kits. I just purchased my first spool of AK rigging. I got the super-thin for 1/35 - 1/32 - 1/48 thin rigging, antennas, and wires and 1/350 ships antennas. It's elastic, which is good, but I I didn't do a very good job of attaching it to the first kit I applied it to. Is there some sort of trick to getting this right?
Even though these are your picks,I feel Like you done amazing on all these as some where definetly the fault of the kit,Like the Il-2,and also the Panzer II was certainly one of my favourite, maybe not the best, but I enjoyed you making an AFV!
You did well with these considering the handicaps they posed to assemble and finish. A good modeler can make a bad kit "good". Conversely, a poor modeler can make a good kit "bad". Good video.
There's so many good kits that are produced nowadays, seems like you have a knack for trying your hardest to avoid them and go with poor plastic? Modelling on hard mode?
For a rubbish kit that Sd.Kfz has provided a decent amount of content. Maybe you got your money's worth after all 😉😂 Happy new year, Matt, thanks for the entertaining and informative content throughout 2023, here's to ongoing success and new adventures in 2024. Maybe some more model railway content if I'm lucky 🤪
@@ModelMinutes I’m trying to. Unfortunately my card declined on the £35 I needed to buy paints, filler etc. I’ve only done one model before and it came out nice but is pure brushmark. Still, I got plenty to practice on
I remember buying Mistercraft P-51D in 1/72 a few years back as a decal donor for a specific Mustang Mk.IVA I wanted to build (a plane flown by the final commander of the famous Polish 303 RAF Squadron), and these decals almost ruined the entire project as I ended up having to repaint the model and order good quality aftermarket decals. The Mustang kit itself is a Heller repack, so it should at least be buildable, although probably not all that accurate, right now it sits somrwhere in the pile. The only other experience I had with Mistercraft was a 1/72 Saab Draken kit which I knew was terrible, and based on some ancient forms (I think original Revell from like 1957), but I really wanted to build a Draken quick and as a totally fantasy project, using leftover paints and decals from variety of kits.
ah that sucks, the mistercraft decals are pretty bad and have a habit of falling apart, I always use microscale liquid decal film on them to try and save them
@@ModelMinutes I think I managed to successfully save that project. I cannot put a link to it, as in my experience TH-cam doesn't like Imgur links, but if you want to check it out, it should be fairly easy to find if you Google "Imgur szalonychemik". It is a bit scrolling down my Imgur page as that was a project from 2019, but I've been on a break since 2020, before I managed to get one kit done this year. And along the way to the Mustang, you will be able to see my aforementioned Frankendraken project.
I personally have a number of Mistercrap models (cheap because good, good because cheap, cough cough) that served me as models that I won't be afraid to ruin them with trying to learn how to assemble and paint them. Some of them were relatively easy to assemble (PZL P11c or PZL 23) and don't look as bad, but some are indeed trash (CR714 - upper parts of the wings misaligned with one centimetre gap between where greebles were and where they should have been) plus yeah, it made me hate doing decals and transfers (I still remember having to assemble Finnish "happy windmill" out of tiny pieces and filling the gaps with freehand - it just looked bad)
@@Jfk2Mr The sole model I finished this year, AMT/Round 2 USS Enterprise D from Star Trek The Next Generation in 1/2500 was a real learning curve in terms of dealing. Entire surface of the model gets covered with large sheets of fairly brittle (although not to the level of Mistercrap) decals. I managed to complete it without ruining a single transfer. Some got torn a little, but I always managed to place them in a way that makes it barely visible.
It's not actually a recommendation - its actually a list of the mistercraft kits I either have in my stash or have featured in a video (the ones in the stash will be built in the future). It gives people the ability to purchase the exact version I have featured if they fancy having a go - and just because I think a model kit is bad doesn't mean it won't stop people buying them, in fact I know some people who have specifically bought a kit that I told them was bad as a challenge . . . So if it supports my channel at absolutely no cost to them, allowing me to be able to afford to make these free-to-view videos, I don't think that's a bad thing. . . ?
I thought the Airfix Spitfire was a relatively good kit, I had the starter set version mainly because of the famous 610 Sqn DW-K markings which happened to use my local airfield (at the time) as a forward operating base during the Battle of Britain so I supposed I'm a little biased there. I found the supplied paints pretty good and after a matt varnish the model now takes pride of place in the display cabinet.
The airfix kit is generally not a bad model (although being mass produced over the last 15 years or so has resulted in some wear and tear on the moulds showing up on the plastic. The main reason it went into this video was because the included paints in my example were of a poorer quality compared to other examples of this kit that I have also built
Correct me if I’m wrong but Pz II from Tamiya was actually late 60s. In fact, I believe it’s one of their first kits. I had one and yes it’s far away from the usual Tamiya quality that we’re used to now.
1971 Tooling, not that they tell you that on the box or anything, tamiya is one of these companies who have no problem with selling old kits in the same style of box as their new kits, which is a bit misleading in my opinion
I bought a Boeing 707 kit. It would be fun they said it would be easy they said but no. Flash mold lines the engine covers don’t even fit together. I love the 707 but Atlantis really let me down. I did their hup-2 kit a great two hour build. And I had high hopes. Keep up the great work dude
I've recently built a PM Models F86 and while it was cheap, it was a really low detail kit, so I'm not surprised to see the brand pop up on here. However, there is something to be said for making a satisfying job of a cheap, slightly rubbish kit.
I remember being introduced to Tamiya kits in the early 1980s and being astounded by the well executed moudlings and level of detail. To hear them now described as "not a bad kit" makes me wonder how far things have progressed since my days in the 70s/80s when my bedroom ceiling was lavishly adorned with dogfighting Me's, Spitties and Heinkels.... my wife wouldn't allow them drawing pin holes in the bedroom ceiling nowadays !!! P.S Ignore the arsehole below and keep enjoying your hobby.
@@ModelMinutes Any points you'd like to highlight about it? This was actually the first video of yours I've seen, but I'll be watching the Yak-15 one soon
the funny thing is that not all kits in that range are as bad (or good) as others. At least it gives you some indication of the vintage unlike other companies who still sell really old models as part of their normal range alongside modern toolings. Without doing research it can be hard to tell what you are going to get...
Mister Hobby Kits are...something. They sure are a thing and they cost money, despite being a thing that is not particularly...good. I tried their F-117 Nighthawk, and I GENUINELY couldn't even get started on assembling it. It was so atrociously moulded and covered in flash, and the plastic was just outright disintegrating under the plastic cement to an unusable extent.
The models of these scales are intended for beginners and that is very good. I made models in the 70s and this kind of kit was the norm! To get better, you had to spend a lot of money and I'm not even talking about being able to own an airbrush :o)
yeah . . .even the companies who make these kits don't blanket the 1/72 and 1/48 scale model kits as "beginner models". Even in the same range from different companies there are some which are dedicated beginner models whilst there are others which are considerably more complex and require more skill to complete and are certainly not beginner friendly. I've built larger (and smaller) scale models which have been easier than some 1/72 kits
At least Airfix are honest about their old ‘classic’ kits, they make it quite clear on the boxing what you are buying and set the price accordingly. That can’t be said of other companies that pass off very old moulds as if they are new kits and at new kit prices. For that reason alone I would not put any Airfix ‘classic’ kit in a worst kit list.
@@ModelMinutes Absolutely, just making the point that at least they tell you that you are getting 1970s moulds whereas Revell don’t tell and even try to pass it off as a new kit.
The Bad kits are where you learn to become a good modeller. Easy kits just make you a builder and even then most "Builders" will screw up their Easy kits with bad paint and poor paint skills. There's a trade off but I do love finding these old "Diamonds in the rough" as it keeps the skills from becoming rusty lol.
to be honest That Jaguar looks a pretty decent model ... without the oversized missiles. bit unfair to rate it so bad when you could have simply left the missiles off (I actually don't think Jag's actually had that loadout .. The last RAF ones used in the Gulf war had 2 overwing Sidewinders ...Normal loadout would probably be 2 droptanks and bombs/rocket pods ... given that the Jag was a ground attack aircraft not a fighter
Personally? Because I run a youtube channel where I build and review model kits and I wanted to create a review on that particular model and find out why it was so cheap - I do also have reviews on other spitfires from other companies too
So many tiny kits, hate anything under 1/48 admittedly because my arthritic hands hare the tiny parts. These are some very poor kits to be honest. Had a few rough quality kits this year included 1 with such poorly printed instruction they were useless.
Fun fact: Academy/Minicraft cannot do 144. I've seen better being pooped out of carnival claw games. I'd advise to just avoid their 144 kits at all costs with the exception of super-large subjects like the B-52.
no i dont agree with your rankings the only modle in this vid that looks bad was the last one the merlin id say for the price points of the kits you are asking to much but with a bit of clean up wich quit frankly is fine thay all looked like what thay are ment to look like
Models like models every one is good event hobby kits Craft all tho i have some of these models nad quality but They are good exept the spitfire Mk VB instruction like in tamiya but i knows that they need some money to not go bankrupted but on the bright side great ww1 aircrafts
The Il-2 sturmovik is repack of a repack of a repack of kit made in 1980s Poland, back when it was socialist country and part of soviet block. It was made by ZTS Plastyk together with few other planes used by poland during WWII, like PZL-37 los and Yak-1. The thing is that even then , while PZL-37 and Yak were reasonably easy to put together, Il -2 was already known to be notoriusly bad kit. The legend goes that chief engineer resposnible for making is retired (or even died, according to some) in the middle of the project, and his succesors were not able to finish it properly.
@@ModelMinutes yes, the Most of them are. It’s depends on your luck, you could get a Tiger II for 18,99€ and it will have bad quality. But you can also get one for good quality. The 1/35 models actually really nice, I built the Leopard 1 and it was not a pain in the Ass like the other models.
You can't just blithely say "There were some inaccuracies on the model that weren't on the actual X"! What inaccuracies? Show them, and what you did to fix them!
They are discussed in the full build video focusing on the specific model - this is just a summary video of everything from this year. Most of my viewers have already seen those uploads so I didn't want to waste time by going in-depth on the issues with every single kit again here
@@sarumano884 if you take a look at the “videos” tab on my channel and scroll down through the list, you should see them all there apart from the Jaguar as it’s not uploaded/edited yet

I once took my girlfriend to the Aberdeen tank museum in Maryland. She looked over the exhibits and said, “Real tanks look like badly built model kits.” I guess she’d seen those, too. There’s no moral imperative to build like a god; it’s just a hobby. And as they said in that movie, it’s only a model.
Hi, your honourable mention of Tamiya's Panzer 2, I think I made the exact same model (even the box art looks the same) in 1974. That would certainly account for the bad mould closure lines. The moulds must be knackered by now. Tamiya - shame on you, that is disgusting quality. New (and modern style) moulds please. If anyone wants to tell me that these are new moulds then I would ask why they copied the old ones so faithfully. 📉
These are indeed the old moulds, why expend cost making new ones when people will still buy the kit from the old toolings? Especially if they don't indicate tooling age on the boxes
@@ModelMinutes Well Mr M.M. This is one old git just getting back into modeling who will not be buying this Tamiya model (even though I have this thing for small armoured vehicles.) As they say on TV programs - other makes are available. Wishing you a good one, my regards....

ah that sucks, the mistercraft decals are pretty bad and have a habit of falling apart, I always use microscale liquid decal film on them to try and save them
@@ModelMinutes I think I managed to successfully save that project.
Your "worst" kits turned out better than many folks' best efforts. 😄
Happy New Year and looking forward to more of your videos in 2024.
Happy new year!
I see on your Amazon link you recomend Mistercraft kits. That sort of conflicts with your choices of worst builds.
Those Airfix starter set paints need to thinned with water then applied in 2 coats, using the first coat almost as a primer.
yeah, these didn't quite work like that, the formula had changed
They can also be affected by age.
☺️
The sidewinders on that Jaguar are hilarious...
lol they really are
Correct me if I’m wrong but Pz II from Tamiya was actually late 60s.
I like the quick build of these to show how they are. I know much time and money can be spent on a kit to make it great,
yeah it can be an expensive hobby
I'm ex-navy so navy planes are my first love. Fairey Swordfish onwards but this video really got me going. I'm in Germany looking for the Tamiya kit.
I hope you can find one :)
Thanks for sharing, sounds like a pretty bad kit
i am working on a revell ah-64 in 1/100 its a great little kit highly recommended @@ModelMinutes
Panzer ll is not bad at all.Well done!
Thanks!
Linberg kits were at time were great I built a lot Woolworth or discontinued hares bargen buys
nice
I've recently built a PM Models F86 and while it was cheap, it was a really low detail kit, so I'm not surprised to see the brand pop up on here. However, there is something to be said for making a satisfying job of a cheap, slightly rubbish kit.
definitely, i like messing about with some bad kits :P
I remember being introduced to Tamiya kits in the early 1980s and being astounded by the well executed moudlings and level of detail. To hear them now described as "not a bad kit" makes me wonder how far things have progressed since my days in the 70s/80s when my bedroom ceiling was lavishly adorned with dogfighting Me's, Spitties and Heinkels.... my wife wouldn't allow them drawing pin holes in the bedroom ceiling nowadays !!!
P.S Ignore the arsehole below and keep enjoying your hobby.
Thanks for sharing :)
Pm Model "Spits " have no wheel wells for the landing gear!!!
That is indeed true
Despite this, and seeing the quality for myself, I'm still looking forwards to making my PM Yak-15
Have fun!
@@ModelMinutes Any points you'd like to highlight about it? This was actually the first video of yours I've seen, but I'll be watching the Yak-15 one soon
i think all the issues i had are in the Yak 15 video @@olivergs9840
You suckered me in by showing a 5 Sqn Lightning F6 with overwings, but it didn't appear. Why show it?
is it, perhaps, in the other video where I look at the best kits of the year?
Mistercraft takes a prize, well deserved for ancient ZTS plastyk kit they still sell.
Yeah, it was kinda crazy how bad this kit was
Yeah, it's no surprise that it's often referred to as Mistercrap - missing/other than advertised decals definitely do not help
try the Amodel 1/72 I-16 type 5/6
bad?
Very
After my experiences with airfix vintage panther tank i have never touched that range again
the funny thing is that not all kits in that range are as bad (or good) as others.
It was so atrociously moulded and covered in flash, and the plastic was just outright disintegrating under the plastic cement to an unusable extent.
thats a shame
Even though they may be honest with the information on the list, it won’t change the fact that an old toolings still worse than something modern
I don’t like to segregate our hobby by labelling people, let’s all just share our love of melting plastic together, no matter which parts we enjoy
to be honest That Jaguar looks a pretty decent model ... without the oversized missiles. bit unfair to rate it so bad when you could have simply left the missiles off (I actually don't think Jag's actually had that loadout .. The last RAF ones used in the Gulf war had 2 overwing Sidewinders ...Normal loadout would probably be 2 droptanks and bombs/rocket pods ... given that the Jag was a ground attack aircraft not a fighter
The out of scale armament isn’t the only issue with this kit, but I’ll go more in-depth in the review video
Those missles under the second kit are chonk. 😂
such big bois lol
That Sturmovik looks horribly like the old Airfix kit reboxed.......it was a shocker
I think the old airfix kit might even be slightly better than that one lol
Why would you buy a crappy PM Spitfire when Airfix amongst others make such good kits in this scale at a reasonable price? Asking for trouble . . .
Personally? Because I run a youtube channel where I build and review model kits and I wanted to create a review on that particular model and find out why it was so cheap - I do also have reviews on other spitfires from other companies too
Мистеркрафт бьет все рекорды :)
:)
Yes the spitfire could well have its origins in Frog. Canopy is a giveaway.
yeah
2:00
sidebangers ... when you need that extra bang for your buck
i do enjoy having some side builds
All the best for ‘24!
You too!
NO WAY LESSGOOOO there is wost kits video!
:D
PM models are made in Turkey nearly 50 years ago and they are the reason most of us Turkish modellers began the hobby.
i can imagine!
Holy crap,2 Airfix kits made the WORST list....im shocked.lol🤣🤣🤣
There was also an Airfix kit in the best list too :P
@@ModelMinutes .nothing like a bit if "tounge in cheek" humour.....happy new year to you Mat and all yours at home.🙂👍👍👍
So many tiny kits, hate anything under 1/48 admittedly because my arthritic hands hare the tiny parts. These are some very poor kits to be honest. Had a few rough quality kits this year included 1 with such poorly printed instruction they were useless.
yeah, sometimes they just need to be built so we can move on to better models
Fun fact: Academy/Minicraft cannot do 144. I've seen better being pooped out of carnival claw games. I'd advise to just avoid their 144 kits at all costs with the exception of super-large subjects like the B-52.
thanks for the info
My academy jaguar is still left unpainted
some of my kits are like that too
Mine was the revell p-61 black widow. Everything about it was crap
that's a shame
no i dont agree with your rankings the only modle in this vid that looks bad was the last one the merlin id say for the price points of the kits you are asking to much but with a bit of clean up wich quit frankly is fine thay all looked like what thay are ment to look like
thanks for your thoughts
That Academy Jaguar is truly horrible!
lol it's not the best
Models like models every one is good event hobby kits Craft all tho i have some of these models nad quality but
They are good exept the spitfire Mk VB instruction like in tamiya but i knows that they need some money to not go bankrupted but on the bright side great ww1 aircrafts
thanks for sharing
The Il-2 sturmovik is repack of a repack of a repack of kit made in 1980s Poland, back when it was socialist country and part of soviet block. It was made by ZTS Plastyk together with few other planes used by poland during WWII, like PZL-37 los and Yak-1. The thing is that even then , while PZL-37 and Yak were reasonably easy to put together, Il -2 was already known to be notoriusly bad kit. The legend goes that chief engineer resposnible for making is retired (or even died, according to some) in the middle of the project, and his succesors were not able to finish it properly.
thanks for the info!
So i think the worst models I have ever built are the 1/72 Tanks from Revell. I like Revell, but they are just bad. Not recommended.
Aren't most of them ex-Matchbox? I did their Panzer II some years ago and it was actually ok
Most of my viewers have already seen those uploads so I didn't want to waste time by going in-depth on the issues with every single kit again here
@@ModelMinutes Ah. Thank you. There's nothing that tells me you did a long version. :-)
@@sarumano884 if you take a look at the “videos” tab on my channel and scroll down through the list, you should see them all there apart from the Jaguar as it’s not uploaded/edited yet
The more you build, the better you'll get
Keep trying 👍
That’s the plan
Wanna crap kit get the revell 1/32nd scale f 14 tomcat
that bad?
Your WORST KITS video has over twice the views of your BEST KITS video. I guess give the audience what they want.
People like bad things I suppose
There are no worst or best model kits.
Price, use, age of user etc.
It all depends.
As someone who reviews model kits, there are definitely bad model kits
If you want super duper, modern, fully detailed kits buy them. Don’t moan when you buy cheep kits aimed at kids or war gamers.
Not seen my other video about the best kits then?
ARCADEMY JEGURE IS JA-GA LOL
lol
Mister craft I just avoid.. completely
I like doing them because they are cheap and a good way to try out new skills or products
Dishonorable Mentioned of Miserable builds.
lol
How can you tell which are the worst? You build like a 5 year old.
fair play to those five year olds
all of your builds belong on this list
On baby
Top banter
He's spending time and money to build these just for the sake of us learning and influences us to follow him, you just aren't grateful aren't you, build one yourself!
Let’s see your flawless kits then. Since you’re clearly the gold standard
This is one old git just getting back into modeling who will not be buying this Tamiya model (even though I have this thing for small armoured vehicles.)
As they say on TV programs - other makes are available.
Wishing you a good one, my regards....
