    Very good insights. It really helps in choosing the right brands as per budget. Now a days there are a lot of transactions are happening on various non retail forums like Facebook Marketplace etc allowing people to hunt for good quality pre owned models at reasonable prices…

    I have that hwy61 Hemi under glass but I can't remember what I gave for it. At the time I was working and if I wanted it I would have paid whatever it costed. Now I'm way more into looking for the good deals. Getting alot of them where the doors fall open too easally and don't stay closed properly. I just had to glue the doors shut on a Ferrari. If one can get past that and don't need to have functioning doors. I'd just go with whatever is cheapest.

    I lucked out in value when I bought a bunch of tv and James Bond cars in the late nineties early 2000's. Got the Munster's Koach for $15.95 at K-Mart, Dragula, Monkees Mobile, Mach 5, Speed Racer Shooting Star, they were all like $25. I also got all the AutoArt James Bond cars, the gadget DB5, the Lotus Submarine, the Lotus Ski car, and the Toyota from You Only Live Twice all for about $65 new at the time. All those cars are worth way more now, although I'm not wanting to sell them at all. But to build my collection today would take way more dough. In fact I finally added the 66 Batmobile and the Green Hornets Black Beauty AutoArt was $200 new.

    I'm not a huge collector but I know my way around...but I'm pretty sure that anson, road legends , road tough and GMP are all branch off's of ertl and eventually ertl turned into autoworld and you forgot to mention motormax or motorworx they would be a few steps above ertl and maisto due to the hinge,paint,rim and detail for the price and another lower end model is welly welly has a lot of different cars but the suv's and pickups are usually older so definitely harder to get your hands on.with my experience with ertl you want to be careful of the cast...it's old so that means it's weak but if you find a mopar car a movie car a ideal tools truck you want to look it up ertl does a lot of limited production cars and there will be a number on the exhaust showing that it's number 145 of 500 for example also maisto and burago both companies seemed to merge in the mid 2000’s and make different versions of the same cars and with the new ones what you’ll see is a burrago in a Maisto box most of the time it will be a Lamborghini or Ferrari I imagine it’s a licensing issue...

    Great video, i been collecting 1/18 scale cars since the 90s after seeing the 1/24 Franklin MInt cars and how expensive they were and couldn't afford them. Even though the Franklin Mint and Danbury mint ones had better detail, the way cheaper 1/18 Road Legends were bigger and nice enough looking for me for only 15 or $20 each. Spencer Gifts once had a clearance sale where i bought a Road Signature 1979 Trans Am for $5 and now they are selling for $100. Sun Star is a nicer brand for a good price. I find Maisto way better than Ertyl American Muscle. I have seen a lot of Ertl car interiors with lousy detail, I mostly stay away from Ertyl. Also i noticed the later Maisto models have better detail than the older ones, the same goes for the newer Road Signature models.

      Hi, don't know how You went with Franklin Mint, with My past experience here in the UK anyway, stay away from these back pages magazines advertising clocks/watches, cars, dolls, in My opinion they're overpriced and c..p quality, invest Your money in 'real' antiques, something Your Grandmother/Grandfather would have been around in Their time, I paid £400 for a mantle clock from Franklin Mint, what's it worth now?, Peanuts!, the movement could probably been bought for £30!, Buy a mantle clock with a French movement, safer investment, talking only from personal experience here.

The interiors and engines aren't that highly detailed but still not bad. Chris, I really appreciated your video on 1/18th scale model cars. About 15 years ago, I bought about 80 of these cars, all in boxes, and had no idea what they were worth. I've sold about 20 of them. Mostly for $20.00 to $50.00. I now see some of them are quite valuable. I am concerned that the boxes, particularly the plastic, are dusty. Do you have any advice on how to clean them without damaging them? I would appreciate and help you could give me. Thanks again.

    • @ThriftShopHustler
      @ThriftShopHustler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing. Feather duster to get off what you can, then a damp rag (not wet, damp) if you have serious fogging issues on the plastic box windows you can use a dab of olive oil once you get the dust off, use a paper towel to rub it on the plastic window. DO NOT USE THE OLIVE OIL ON THE CARDBOARD PART OF THE BOX. Good luck.

Many times they are made by the same companies already mentioned but there only distributed to the car dealerships and not sold to the public. I’ve seen some of them go for big money, especially when there isn’t a model available for sale. I remember one I was on a bidding war on eBay for back in the early 2000s that was a first gen Mitsubishi Eclipse, it sold for more than I wanted to pay, lol. Chris - Wonderful segment. I had been waiting to go to a diecast show in Michigan where I'm located to pick up this knowledge. THANK YOU. I'm a muscle care guy from the 60-70's era. Sounds like GMP and ERTL are likely sources? Are there any good size diecast shows around the country worth visiting? If so, where and when? Also, are you aware of anyone making custom water soluble decals? They obviously make them for the big name race teams, but I would like to recreate cars from the mid-60's through 70's and need someone to work with. Any suggestions? I've searched the net and have not found any. ERTL, ACME and others are not returning my calls or emails. I'm waiting for the bell to ring!!
    Chuck

      @ThriftShopHustler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GMP is way better than ERTL, ERTL is like the commons but older one's in the package can be worth money. There are tons of show's in California but finding stuff at a good price your better off looking at Estate Sales. I use to have a connection for decals but that was 10 years ago, sorry. I would suggest looking on ebay for custom decals.

    Nice video. I would say that right now, and basically the last 5 or so years, there has been a major interest in diecast of all scales especially the 1/18, 1/24, and 1/64. Greenlight and Burago are 2 brands that I would add to your video.

    Chris, very informative diecast video. You did forget about the worst of the worst in 1/18th scale: Mira and bBurago (my personal opinion). When I was new to diecast collecting I purchased one or two of the worst. bBurago lacks in quality and Mira is just terrible. I could go on about these two examples but you can judge for yourself. I agree EXOTO AND CMC are very high end but they retail for big $$$. Look out for BBR, another high end model. I have a load of GMP/Acme and they tend to be very good in quality and generally affordable. Thanks for the video.

    You forgot so many companies not to mention all the other scales. A longer video could have helped. Bburago was the first 1/18 diecast producer although they were making 1/24 diecasts in the 1970s! How about Franklin & Danbury Mints? 1/43 scale is huge and older than most other scales, having come from the model train world (O scale) Slotcars, Matchbox, Hot Wheels, etc, etc
