Some one came over to the house and wanted to know how to burn the image into a silkscreen. I go over each step so you can learn easily how it is done .

I’ve watched a lot of videos on how to do this just to make sure that everyone is doing it similarly. This is the most “cut and dry”, “black and white”, simple and detailed demonstration on how to do it. Everyone else is so worried about the video editing process that it just fucks with the flow. Great training video. It’s like being there in person for hands on training. Thank you for the clarity.

Excellent tutorial. I have been learning screenprinting for 1 week. purchased a ali framed screen, used projector film on a hp deskjet A4 printer, took ages to dry but put under lamp for 10 min. 400watt halogen burned image in 4 minutes. only used thin glass but got good results. made all my own press/exposure unit thanks to King Bob.

Been trying to start screenprinting a few days ago I bought emulsion printed the transfer sheets made a 500w exposure unit built screens n started to burn images on them but everytime i tried to wash them out.. they kept kicking my ass.. This video really helped me out I'm now printing like a pro. Thanks Uncle Bob

Great video. I've used vellum for stippling with a rapidograph pen, but never thought about using it instead of clear cellophane for silkscreening. Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the new tips. Peace.

Thank you so much for this! I did it several times but it's not coming out right. Now I know the problem. I just left it for just 30 minutes and it was a success. I thought, the ink is the problem but no... it was the time length I was leaving it under the light.

Hi Bob... I have been doing this for 20 plus yrs. I was amazed watching your video, I've always done this in the dark, but you were in a lighted room with daylight and all... I've always taken between 5 1/2-7 minutes to burn the image onto the screen, and then using a pressure washer and it usually takes about 5 minutes of blowing it out. I'm amazed how fast and easy it blew out and you were only using a hose with a nozzle it looked like!!!!!!!! Does it have to be the Emulsion you were using to make this easier? When reusing a screen, do you use degreaser? Thank you!
I’m not as experienced as you but from what I know, by letting it soak with water for a few minutes before really trying to wash it out, it makes it much easier to wash out. He sprayed his with water and waited 5 min before washing out
Photo emulsion is light sensitive when dry. You can safely work with some light. Even when dry, to expose a screen under a normal household light would take hours. I leave a door to a room open enough for me to see so there is no direct light but sufficient light to see by. Even is a screen is dry, to expose one in your house with household light and daylight would take hours. 2 things are relevant to washing a screen out. The longer a screen has been drying or stored, the longer it takes to wash them. Longer exposure times also make them more difficult to wash out. Wet both sides, wait 30 sec - 60 sec and they'll wash right out. No pressure washer is required.

Great video sir. Very informative and I've learned a lot from this simple tutorial. Question. I have an inkjet printer instead of a laser. Will that toner aid spray help if I print on vellum paper while using an inkjet? Sorry for my noobness. This is all new to me. Thank you for your time.

Question why do they say it takes 4hrs to dry or even a day I need to do some fast printing for a event at 6pm is it possible to burn a screen and start at 9am to 11am

I burned an image for 12.5 minutes with a 500 watt halogen bulb. The design came out but it was pretty tough. The edges of the design weren't SUPER clean but pretty good. I'm wondering if I exposed it too long. I had the light above it about 20 inches. Do you think I might have over exposed it? Is it supposed to wash with the lines very crisp or is there supposed to a little gunk that's stuck?
Prob a bit late but that's normal, just gotta use a soft toothbrush to rub away the inconsistencies
I have another question and need some help!
I bought the same Textil PV emulsion. I am using the same 500 watt Halogen light. I exposed it for 3 minutes. (when I removed the image it was partially stuck to the screen) Used a spray bottle to wet it and left it alone for 5 minutes and then sprayed again and used the pressure washer to wash out the screen. Most of the image came out almost immediately, but my image blew out and the emulsion peeled up around the image.
The screen felt dry before burning my image, but is it possible it just wasn't done drying? I dried it for about 45 minutes in front of a fan. Or could it possibly be because the Halogen light was too close?
Any help would be appreciated!

When you open it do you need to keep it stored in a cool dark place afterwards?
when washed out and ready to dry you can speed it up in the sun but storing it well inside is best

sorry for the late reply , 12" yes and 500 watt light any screen print supply place has velum don't go to staples or anything like that .

Sure it is, That PV it's used only for screen making. And ink is for actual printing on your textiles.

Hayley Jones The Ink used mostly for printing is called... "Plastisol Ink"..
Yes, Plastisol, learn as much as you can before starting, what to clean your screens with etc. Been researching for almost 5 months now, lol and still haven't burned a screen yet haha.
Bob using the small scoop coater looks like such a pain in the ass compared to just using lets say a 14inch one.....and you just a smoother coat of emulsion great video though :)
would inkjet also work great with velum?
Yes. When using ink jet, print on high quality. Also be sure the ink is fully dry before using it.
hey Bob i have a question.after i exposed the screen i wet it right after,i waited 5 minutes wet it again,i put the screen in the shower wet it down and the emulsion peeled off.i used the diazo 2 part emulsion.any suggestions?

Is emolsion light sensitive or uv sensitive. Because my lightening takes me a minimum of 20 minutes. Maybe my light hasn‘t enough uv light.
it is uv sensitive ,if you are working under flourecent light or any UV lighting this will work agaisnt you . Use a 500 watt halogen light to expose the screen and it should work in 2 to 3 minutes if not there is something wrong
hey bob. i have one quick question about the emulsion. do i've to put a bit of water into the sensitizer before i can mix it with the color emulsion?
azadd halim yes... depending on the emulsion... most come with the big bucket, and a small little bottle which is mixed with water.. use bottled water because tap water could have iron in it.. which will ruin it..
sorry i am just reading this 4 years later but i will answer anyway because someone new may be reading it . BUY pre mixed emulsion it last longer than the stuff you have to mix ok everyone sells a pre mixed emulsion I buy mine from Sati Americas

Hi, is it possible to make silkscreen for black and white photo with halftones? This is first question,second question is- when I am trying to wash screen after exposion ,emulsion is coming off the screen.Does it means that screen under exposed? Thank you!
you can do half tones for black and white photos just get the right mesh count to handle the halftone you are using . If emulsion is coming off where it shouldn't it is under exposed

yes stay out of direct sunlight and you are fine i get my emulsion from Sati America just ask for the pink emulsion

If a few bits around the text come off, shiuld i let it dry longer or expose longer?
make sure your film positive is crisp around the edges not ruff and broken up and make sure it is very black so no light goes through . Then make sure the emulsion is a thin coat and then have your light 12" away all these points add up to a perfect wash out .at 2 and 1/2 minutes
What is the ratio of the glue coating solution and the sensitizer?

ah hi? i just wanted to ask if i can possibly burn an image on silk screen by just using a clean white bond paper (with design) and ,rather than any transparency paper? thanks.
angelica dinero theoretically, you can even use thin tracing paper.. but it really Cuts down on Quality.. i would stick to Transparencies or somethin along those lines
velum is the preferred medium for burning an image it is like tracing paper ( As KaBGRaFx said ) it is best with a laser printer you are welcome to call and ask questions , i do not always see these notices right away to answer them.

silkscreen is made of nylon these screens can be bought cheaper than trying to make it yourself
