The verdict on the Support role in League of Legends has always been a divisive one, with half of players saying the role is completely useless and most difficult to climb with while the other half claim it's the easiest role in the game to climb and has a ton of impact. Something more pressing however is the overall attitude people have towards the role: in that hardly anyone appreciates support players, regardless of what stance they take on the role's carry potential. Today we'll be discussing why Support is the most thankless role in League of Legends.

I hate being negative to you but doesn't this add seem a little suspicious. Like this isn't steam or riot supported so how does this work or make money. Sorry if there's something I'm missing. Tldr add seems sus
@@Demodare im curious as well, how are they cheaper then direct from riot?
@@omnizoom I think because riot relies on you overbuying RP while hextech store takes away that, thereby making it cheaper, as well as buying everything in bulk to still earn money. I've used it before and it definitely works though
also rp costs different prices in different places
This is scummy as fuck. Websites like this that sell RP/loot at a "discount" get them by hacking accounts or with stolen credit cards. You're aiding actual theft.

Also being support is great it makes you ready to be parent I swear it may seem easy, but preventing a suicidal baby from dying for 30 minutes is not the easiest thing to do
It's hard when they don't listen though
Very well said.
An interesting and somewhat frustrating part of playing enchanter supports, especially ones like Soraka and Sona, is that because their heals go fairly unnoticed it gives people an over-estimation of their own champion’s current strength. Which can lead to players taking fights when the support is not present that they cannot win, but believe they can, since they don’t realize how much of their survivability is dependent on their support’s presence.
Milio is extremely dangerous because of this, tons of time I have to remind my team not to fight without me for this exact reason
Lost a lot of Ivern games because of that. Jinx gets a pentakill with full hp because she gets a huge shield every 4 seconds and Daisy peel; then proceeeds to engage and die againt one enemy as soon as i am not next to her.
I think it's because League is a scaling game so enchanter's healing is purposefully made weak so it can be impactful in late game. Whereas in DOTA 2, enchanters are rare but they do exist. You can level up their spells and their impact are still slightly better or have reduced cooldown. Because their base kit are kept strong so they are reliable at level 1. This applies to every hero
Well said... some of these adc think they unkillable because they got 3 kills early game sitting under my soraka... worst part is i recall to buy and item leaving them in lane alone and boom they are dead😂😂😂
I’ve had this happen so many times I can’t even count. I love when my fed Darius runs into 5 people without me and ints a shutdown because he didn’t realize I, the Soraka, am the reason he got fed
support is the role where you can do 100 good things and no one bats an eye, but do 1 bad thing suddenly it's support diff

Jungler: First time?
Well jungle is also a macro-reliant champion, laner carries usually blame supports and jungle for not assisting and coordinating the game, regardless if they won or lost the lane@@hitmanmastodon1580
That's way more like JG tbh. No one really cares about the support other than the ADC, therefore no one is going to blame someone who they 'think' does not have control over the game. Even ADC would split their blame between JG and Sup, but they are ADC, they blame everyone.
you can say that about literally any role

I always thought about the team that jungler is the dad who does most important stuff, while support is the mom who makes sure their children do not kill themselves in the meantime. (ADC is the youngest child who keeps trying to put fork into electric socket).
The role that has some of the most toxic players? Imagine. Bot and mid are the most toxic roles.
Something that could've been touched on that's strongly related to this:
Pick order.
As someone who plays support, I will usually only swap to pick earlier for the top laner, since their lane is the most heavily matchup impacted. Otherwise, I will hold onto last or second-to-last pick, which frequently makes the people in my lobby absolutely screech when I turn down their trade request.
Like, my dudes, support isn't *just* a counterpick sensitive role, it's also the role expected to round out your team comp or negate the enemy's team comp. In soloQ, the amount of people who refuse to hover their pick so I can plan mine is absolutely staggering. Since they don't hover, I can't pick to compliment them unless I pick last. And if I can't pick to compliment, I need to pick to counter, which also requires me picking last.
The mentality being that since support is the "least important", they should always be willing to swap you into the pick order position you want.
But I'm the support, not your UwU "yes master whatever u want" doormat. If the enemy team is hard wave pushers and the rest of my team picked champs with poor waveclear, I need to pick a mage support capable of one-shotting waves. If they're heavy on key CC, I should lock in Morgana. Hell if I see they have a bunch of autoattacking hypercarries, I'll lock in Teemo and build full CDR to perma-blind them. These are decisions I just straight up cannot make if I pick early. Support's power is it's freedom and adaptability, and if you take away the support's ability to make informed decisions, you've basically crippled one of your teammates.
Also, ADCs that have it in their head that you're *their* support. No honey, I support the team, not just you. If anything I'm way more concerned with getting the jungler ahead because their impact is larger and generally they're less prone to getting insta-popped the moment a Yone looks at them.
THANKS FOR THIS COMMENT.
This comment right here
I usually swap my pick with the top laner, the amount of times they lost the lane even when counter picking the enemy top and not getting ganked is wild. When I gotta pick first I just lock in senna since I otp her and I might be able to manage the game out but sometimes I can't and my teammates seem to have short term memory cause they can't remember I had to blind pick
90% of Players Need to read this Post
Pick order is top 》mid 》 support 》adc 》 jungle (depending on adc, it can be also be last).
Adc is sometimes more important if they have harder counters or are really good into some matchups. Nilah is great into draven, zeri and twitch for example and horrible into long poke. Kog maw has no hard counters. Rammus and assasains can be bad first pick junglers since they are much less relevant in tanky comps. Supports have some of the least impactful counterpicking unless you play morgana. Most matchups are alright.
I think you should also try adc. Being subjugated to playing adc without support is like playing half a champ and why I don't play adc without duo. Solo queue is much better as mid, top or support since they have more agency and have kits that aren't reliant on teammates (at least enhancers and mage sups are op early).
I love how people rate supports solely on their k/d
Not their k/d/a
Their k/d
And the minute your k/d is good they want to flame for ks.
That’s only show how low they are 😂😂😂😂
This pisses me off everytime. I could go 2/5/15 as lux but the mid who's 2/8/1 will say "well lux you're 2/5 your assists don't matter" like....sorry would you have rather me take those kills? My job was shield, cc, and the poke damage. I did mine. Why didn't you do yours ? It's asinine.
that's exactly how it is, you will play like 1/8/24, your adc has most kills still its your fault the team that won actually lost not their stupid decisions at all and they will tell you at the end "rep supp"
@@linksystothepast well you play mage support, while its not ok to get all the kill you still need to do damage to does your job to the fullest, but if the adc blames you for it then they should expect it from the start when you pick mage support.
Played a game where I perfectly timed a taric ult for a team fight and the only one who react was the enemy adc to complain about their own support
HAHAHAH dammnn also a Taric main here 😂. Nobody knows how much Taric impacts on game, except the enemy
Had a game a couple of weeks ago where I went 5/9/40 as Taric support (the team basically expected me to engage as the only tank, hence the deaths). About 45 minutes in, enemy team had just cleaned up Baron and my team was just walking in and out of bushes like chickens with their heads cut off trying to work up enough intestinal fortitude to go in...
So I took it upon myself, said yolo and popped ult running into the entire enemy team. Got hit by every form of CC known to mankind, laughted, started hammering Q while hitting their Garen and my team swept in and cleaned up. We won the game off of that ace just rolling down mid, not a word of thanks.
I had damn near 100% kill participation, massive vision score and I believe soaked the most damage out of anyone on the team.
@@francogonz adc could survive an assassin full combo and don't even wonder where all that extra health came from
I really hate doing well and seeing the enemy flame their own support in chat. Like shut up, we all have good and bad games. Bullying them is not going to help, and likely will only stress them out. I respect my fellow supports. That being said if anyone happens to be one of those toxic supports that likes to cry support diff in chat, I have to wonder if you need help irl because the desperate for attention is wild.
Perfect description of the support experience
being honest im surprise that a support like renata took so long to show up, thats like many people that play support exclusively like myself feel, "you are alive because i saved you, now do the damage for me so i dont get my hands dirty"
a large part of why people dont play support more is the entire image of selfless healbot
The funny thing Abt Renata is that she's one of the most team reliant supports in the game since her whole kit is designed around spoon-feeding winning scenarios to your teammates in the hopes they follow up.
She actually has a decent win rate in low elo because adcs tend to go in anyways so bailout can actually save their suicidal asses
@@noishfanboy1141you just perfectly described how it feels playing Renata. Spoonfeeding your team winning scenarios lol. It’s like you’ve warded the entire jungle and say“I know it’s a 4v2 but trust me, w and r are going to win this. FIGHT OR DIE”.
I picked up Renata from day 1 as a potential new Main (i play all Enchanters) and people think most of the time i dont do anything as Renata because they think i am Blitzcrank when they see that hook. I do a lot on lane but people call me "afk" not healing them like a Soraka or doing things like Lulu/Nami do visualy.
When i dont overuse my E W and Q they call me afk. Many dont understand the W i had the habit posting a picture of the skilltext in champselect. Many adcs are just to stupid to play with a Renata.
I play sona, which can be considered a selfless healbot champ, but I chose my own runes and build and I managed to climb to plat on flex for the first time, not a huge achievement but I havent been playing that long. I build hextech rocketbelt, archangel staff and lich bane. Oh and also tp because she runs out of mana fast so you want to get kills and back asap to get that blue tear. Early is very important with this build, but it’s super fun to see people flash whenever they see you in late game 👌🏻
Replying a month later but anyway... I play Renata, she's AMAZING. I've been able to win games off of one well timed ult in the mid-late game during team fights/baron/dragon fights, BUT the issue with playing her in low elo is that nobody knows how to play WITH her. I give them bailout and what do they do with it? Run away and die. There's only so much I can do as Renata since she so heavily relies on her team to know what to do. I'll pick her back up for ranked once I escape elo hell.
I've been maining ADC for like 6 years now. I genuinely cannot believe that people think supp is weak or useless. They're probably the single strongest role outside of jungle. I can't count how many times I've seen a support absolutely suffocate an entire enemy team, it's unreal what an excellent player can do.
As a support main we greatly appreciate adcs that relize how much we help them ❤️
Plz say you play euw I need a respectful dude
@@LifelineCleric And we ADC mains appreciate when we have sup with brain.
Sup is better than jungle for the fact that they don't have to farm and get to almost entirely ignore wave state unless a dive is happening

Zilean pisses people off so much, its hilarious. I was harassing the enemies viego for an entire game once and bro was complaining about me the whole game
You do get recognition for playing well as a sp but mostly from the enemy team
this is too real, usually the enemy adc notices when a support is doing well
@@digibeastgaming2814If only their ADC notices, youre not Roaming enough. Make their mid and Jungle suffer too ;)
"A good roadie (or in this case, support) knows his whole job is to make someone else look good, keep someone else safe, help someone else do whay they were put here to do. A good roadie stays out of the spotlight. Once in a while he might step on stage, just to fix a problem, to set something right. But before you even know that he was there, or what he did, he's gone." - Eddie Riggs (Brütal Legend)

@@hyne1234 it still gets the point across
I feel like the disrespect that supports get is indicative of the wider attitude issue league has at large. People simply do not recognize their team for what they do, and as supports have the most nebulous and hard to directly observe impact, they get the least appreciation. The key is that people need to get their heads out of their asses and just be nice to each other bc every role comes with difficulties and challenges, and every player is doing something well that you don't see. Just a shame that half the player base has such a serious ego problem they need to put in a time out lmao
True. Ultimately it's a team effort, but people really forget that thinking they can solo matches.
Everyone wants a meat shield and healing but no one wants to thank them for it. Everyone just thanks whoever gets the most kills. I've seen that in all games that have tanks and supports
Right. I play wild rift and I can't tell you how many times I've done all that AND secured kills (getting high performance) and most times I may only get one person to thank me for that. IF that
Maybe you should try K'sante support, it can send you to other dimension or multiverse.
Recently, I spam K'sante support quite a lot. Somehow, my teammate always thank me, and even my adc always sorry when they make mistake. It's not just one game but almost every games.
Which is why when I get that 0/2/31 thresh I tell him he was the hard fucking carry because they don’t get told that they play well enough.
Tbh when im taliyah and set up a lot of plays for my team, i got 3 honours
I remember this one match I had when I first started playing. I was playing Morgana.
For some unexplainable reason (At the very start of the match) our Mid-lane Yasuo completely abandoned their lane to play Bot.
Mid was completely vacated for at least 3 minutes and no-one ever bothered to try to cover Mid.
Our Top-laner stayed at Top. Our Bot laner stayed at Bot and our Jungler kept ganking Bot and sometime Top but left Mid completely empty. There was a point in the match where there was 4 of us at Bot...
I ended up having to rotating to Mid (since no-one else wanted to), doing my absolute just to make sure that they don't just steam roll our Mid turrets
I was so annoyed to have found myself somehow playing Mid.
it took the whole team far too long to even acknowledge that Mid was a thing that match. by the time anyone came to help. It was already a lost cause.
Needless to say, we lost. and I did do my best but a Morgana vs Yone in Mid wasn't a good match-up, especially when I was still relatively new to the game...
But the thing that will always pissed me off the most, was when that same Yasuo had the nerve to ask me way I even bothered playing Mid when I was so bad and that "I was useless, and I should have stuck to my job"...
If he did his job and not trying to do mine, I wouldn't have had done his job...
if he's somehow reading this. Sincerely, from the very bottom of my heart and soul "FUCK YOU!!!!"
Sorry for venting, this video in particular reminded me of the bullshit I deal with every so often as a support.
Nah. I've had moments like this playing senna. Even karma last night in wild rift. Our first turret is under attack and Kai'sa just decides to farm the jungle camp near us and let our turret go down...we still won, but I was just thinking "why?"

Had a game the other day. I was Asol Support, and my ADC was Smolder.
We were up against Briar and Anivia, and that game I learned how well those two champs work together. Anivia would keep placing walls and Briar would push us into them, shred our health, and kill us almost instantly.
The kicker is that Smolder, despite performing just as badly as I was that game, had the gall to tell me to leave lane and roam, as if he could somehow defeat both Briar and Anivia on his own.
Needless to say, we lost that game.
@kamikazelemming1552 I've had my share of games with teammates that think they know what they're doing but actually dont.. it's not fun
@@kamikazelemming1552you won't like to hear this but the adc was making the right call there. Him telling you to go roam isn't an insult or blaming the lane on you like your comment implies but is instead the adc trying to employ basic adc macro. If you loose that hard in lane the best you can do is mitigate the bleeding, so you ask the support to roam so they can ward and gank so they can try to make things happen around the map and try to snowball a solo lane or jungler so they are being useful to the team and getting income from assets or kills. Meanwhile the smolder would weakside. Freezing the wave as best as he can made easier because there is no way for you to accidently clip the minions while you poke to stack spell thieves or use the minion take proc too early and break the freeze and play safe. If they pressure the tower back off until you are just in exp range soak and go back to freezing when the enemy bot get bored if they dive him and he dies it's whatever he isnt fighting then so he isn't worth money eventually only being worth about 70 gold and there is only 1 not 2 for them to collect and if he does get a kill cool shut down. He gets solo exp can try to stack the best he can for late game which is his entire job and hope you can get the other lanes able to carry him even if he goes 2/14 with 300 cs. It is the mark of a good adc that he was willing to say hey I'm not going to be the carry please go help someone who will instead of wasting your time on me while i just try to be insurance incase the game runs long, in that sometimes flamey adc way.
Honestly thats the sad part at times as a support. You can have teammates who dont know what they are doing. Its personally why I play characters like pantheon, you have engage whilst having the ability to kill other champions instead of fully supporting.
As a Sona main, I can honestly say that, after a 30/40 min game where I must keep an eye on the map, vision, pings, take care of everyone without dying, buying the correct items, positioning correctly during any fight and keep a cool, calm and collected temper while everyone else flaming eachother or me, I am bruned out mentally, which makes me stop playing League for a few days.
At the same time, when I have an ADC that can read the map and knows how to play with me without me having to write to him is just.....ugh, amazing.
Great video Vars, thank you for your work!
This is so true, I've just started playing ranked and I could only play 2, 3 games a day before I get mentally drained, worse yet if my team is incompetent, I might just play that game alone and be done.
Sona main, I hate when my adc doesn’t want to play aggressive during laning phase (exceptions are if we NEED to play safe with a good Draven/naut or cait/lux) or stand parallel to me/is too scared to farm. I play so much better with an adc with good positioning. They don’t trust my healing or damage or speed boost.
I am so sorry for your loss. I stopped reading at “Sona main” and cried.
What?! You have to do all the things everyone on the team has to? No way 😮
@@OrbitDPS Because every role gets to buy support items that gives them extra wards right? Pipe down.
In china the support is called the Auxillary and it's a better term for the role. You round out your team, through mitigation, engage, or more damage. thats why i think one tricking is bad for a support because you should be looking at your team comp and adapting your pick to it.

As a long time support player, THANK YOU for shining light on this massive issue. I like playing support, tanks and enchanters, not to blow my own trumpet but i'm quite good at it, but i just rarely ever want to because it's incredibly stressful micromanaging 9 other players, 5 of which are enemies and 4 who might as well be, all while receiving nothing in return, since as you so eloquently put it supports don't get a singular moment to shine with a visible play often, but rather hundreds of small decisions throughout the game that contribute to victory.
It's true that support may have the lowest mechanical skill floor of all the roles, but being a GOOD support requires a lot of knowledge, split second decisions and SO MUCH PATIENCE.
I don’t even agree about the mechanical skill comparison. You have such little room for error on supports because you have no farm and you’re under-leveled. Sure, you don’t have to last hit, which is like the easiest part of the game. But you have to impact team fights when one wrong step means you’re dead.
@@JuristPugilist yep. other roles deal with positioning, landing skills and dodging too, but with supports it's worse since you're always underleveled and weaker. even worse if you're an enchanter since you also get targeted more
I disagree. As a support main you HAVE to have the fundamentals down like no other. Your map awareness has to be better than everyone else's too.
@user-kv4yb8ec8i that too. And you have to find a way around it as well. Not to mention having to make up for clueless carries that blame you for their own mistakes

Playing adc with support, 50% winrate but playing alone toplane 85% winrate its just so different. Put a support main in toplane or midlane it'll be a disaster.

My proof of being a good support player is when my friends who play adc with me tell me that their games are so much easier when I am with them or how when they play with random supports they miss having me in their lane. It’s the kind of role that you don’t notice what’s missing till it’s gone.
There's also some psychology going in answering the question. Support players are more likely to compliment, ADCs are more likely to complain. So by the psychology of their average players ADCs will receive less flame, because they are usually the flamers, and supports get less praise because they are the praisers.
It's quite the opposite actually imo, because adc's have a reputation of being crybabies, even if their complaints might be 100% valid they will still get flamed by the team because of this. Meanwhile supports are seen as the good samaritans and won't catch much blame because they're "nice" even tho their gameplay might be horrible at times. Just my experience tho.

Originally coming from HotS as an Abathur main, I was surpised how thankless the support role was when I started League. Support has the most agency in the game second to jungle.
Yeah coming from dota 2, supports determine the early and midgame. The thankless role in dota right now is mid.
even though it's the most thankless role, I find myself being the one to be less flamed compared to when the other roles do bad/feed. it's not highlighted as much when I do mistakes like not warding enough or not exerting enough pressure in lane
conversely, I will always applaud the enemy support if they bested me in lane pressure and vision control. goes to show there are better players out there that think one step ahead with their support plays
I get this, I never felt bad when I lost to the better support (unless its yumi)
As medic main from tf2 and a person who plays support in overwatch supports value is like simple politeness like saying thank you please or excuse me insignificant on the surface but can leave impact throughout a person life and if no one had it everyone would be assholea to eachother
it's wild how much even an automated "thank you" from the character, not even the player, can make supporting so much more bearable, a lot of thanklessness of support roles is in how little positive feedback you get on all the most important actions
If you played overwatch you know for a fact that they are the single most impactful role so im not sure if it fits.

Its not my main, but i often play ADC, and the difference between a good support and a bad one is night and day.
I dont carry my support. They carry me.
The way I see it is that we carry the adc to the late game so they can carry the game later
Nah we support them
Just like how some plants need support in order to grow into a tree
Stabilize their growth and ensure they become stronger and massive later on
Better coinflip the support who doesn't hide behind caster minions gl
As someone that went 3/10/43 as Rell Supp., yeah it do be like that
not going to lie, as a support my best memory in a game was when my adc and the middle liner thanked me at the end of a game for covering their ass as a thresh. It doesnt happen often, but when it does, it feels really good to know you managed to help your team out to the best of your ability and that they acknowledge your efforts
My best memory is a bunch of question mark pings on the baron after I Renata ulted into the pit, got Baron and 2 kills and had my team clean up the rest.
This is what fills my body with life.
One way I describe the support role is that you are a multiplier.
Sadly if you multiply a 0 you still have 0.
So no matter your plays, if your team doesn't capitalize on your play, the value is 0.
Another thing most don't understand is that you are the support of the team and not the babysitter of the ADC. Often the ADC is important, but sometimes helping out, peeling, and bringing ahead other members is more important.
If you have a mid or jgl that roams well and ganks well, or gets invaded often, if you can try to help them out.
If your top is popping off and not split-pushing, peel for them. The ADC can safely farm.
i think this really depends on the support! i play with my friends who can barely work a keyboard sometimes but want to learn adc and it’s mostly a game about understanding wave clear and what you need to do to create space for your adc if they’re REALLY bad. one person going 0/5 is never going to be beneficial even if im being productive elsewhere
@@marshxmalluw if you cant get something equal or better elsewhere dont try it. Simple as that
@@marshxmalluw exactly. You can't produce results by multiplying a 0.
Your friend should work on their fundamentals in bot games. Intermediate bots are good enough to distract and disrupt, and they can focus on last hit and wave management, recalls, and general movements.
If you have other players in your team that can be a wincon besides your ADC, supporting them can lead to a win.
Depending on the situation and your support you might have to change your build.
You are basically playing a 4v5 or even a 4v6.
If you can deal significant damage and have decent wave clear, like a Zyra, depending on the situation you could sell your support item and start to farm. Help fixing waves, setting up slow pushes and group with the remaining team
one of the things i despise... when it happens... is when someone evaluates my contribution to the team by looking at my 0/4 score! not ever looking up the 8 assists i have.. when my adc has 8 kills....
and when i do have 4/0/2 or smt on a lux or bard i being called out as stealing kills.... and having all that gold wasted on me!
when i die to save someone, only to be told "no one asked you" when i was looking up that my adc would have given a shutdown for a lot of gold and trying to explain... it comes out as excuses....
i don't know... is it that embarrasing to admit the support saved you? or that it carried a game... or a fight even! i have RARELY been praised for carrying a fight EVEN somone got a penta because i literally CCed the 3 people trying to kill him.... i got 0 credit... all i could read was "honor Jhin"
As a support main, my best friend is having all chat disabled. My teammates are all bots to me (and often behave as such, too!).
ive been playing support forever and the only time i get hate is when playing enchanters
Same I think it’s bc of sexism tho 😐
I think most people think support is easy because it’s much harder to see their impact
Played Zilean in ARAM the other day and was sad to find out there was no statistic to see how many resurrections I've done. Looking at highlight clips, I did several clutch saves on the Sett and Lucian that carried us.
wow you clicked your lowest hp team mates on a 5s window once in a while, truly bafling that league don't track that haha
Nah, if you ult someone as zilean while they are 'low' the enemy will just not kill em. If you are good you ult them within half a sec before they die or while the killing skillshot is already on the way.
And @rootyful there is a tracker as one of the eternals, it says how often you saved someone with your ult that game.
@@Fennin1 if the enemy choose to ignore your ally can just walk alway or dps
As someone who used to main support god damn I almost cried at this. It's so true... everyone else gets credit while you're usually the only one that can see what good you did. I actually just played a game earlier where my Lucian was super strong and fed but I noticed how damn well the Thresh played in every fight and honored him instead - seems he was the reason they won lane so hard and knowing support players he was probably smiling at the PC knowing someone noticed how well he played.
Since I got filled into support when I first started League before branching to top lane, I have nothing but respect for support players and all the shit they have to deal with. 99% of the time, they're just chill and the only 1% of the time when they're not, they've usually been set off by their ADC getting on their case about "making the wrong play" (a large part of why I prefer solo laning in top now)
I think the biggest reason for its stigma has to largely do with the fact that it is the role that, in my opinion, tends to have the most people that have no idea how to play it even remotely at low elos, which is where the majority of league's playerbase resides. Games in bronze/silver unironically end up looking like 4v4's with how little the supports are doing anything even remotely support like, while the other roles are still more or less doing what their role requires (albeit poorly usually, but still), and this behavior tends to not change until at least plat, which is still above a good 80% of the playerbase.
Which is to say, when the majority of the playerbase can't play support, of course they're gonna hate it or think its useless.
That architect and builder analysis was so on point!
as a sup main i shed a tear
Sometimes when my friends actually acknowledge my plays on support it makes me wonder. "Dang, how many big plays have they missed?"
In a way, I think of supports as the drummers or bass players in bands. They're thankless roles (often drummers are made fun of as "simple"), but they act as the glue and provide that base for others (vocalists, lead guitar) to shine.
Another hurdle for supp to climb is that the skillset required to climb vastly differs in low-mid rank to high rank.
going for roams in gold elo is often punished, even if you as the support hit the correct roam timings, simply because your jungle/mid/adc don't know how to play with your roam.
You run mid because you see ur jungler closeby, the enemy jungler is ganking top, both midlaners are around half hp, but yours is slowpushing towards the enemy. your bot wave just bounced and when ur adc is back in lane, he'll be able to freeze.
so you ping ur intention and run mid. then instead of 3man diving the enemy mid like u pinged, crashing a huge wave, your jungler runs top to countergank, eventhough he'll never get there in time. your midlaner pushes the wave and follows your jungler.
if you now follow your adc will be in trouble because he cannot freeze that long. if you dont, your jungler/mid are likely to die, since they fight split while the enemy top/jungle are together. Best case it's a coinflip. But nevermind your adc is in gold and never tried to freeze to begin with and just pushed mindlessly into 2 people, got caught and spampings you.
Honestly in silver/gold/plat your often better of just sitting in lane dominating the enemy and drawing aggro by permapushing. emerald you can start to expect people to actually know how to react to roams correctly.
ill never be over the game where i carried my adc through the laning phase, saved them from so many almost-ints, protected them from dives, and gave up my deathless game to take all four shots of a jhin ult (as a Nami) so they could charge up their ult and finish off the enemy support. no thanks, no honors, didn't even return my post mortem fist bump. Such is life.
You know, I've felt for years now that when you have a good support in the team, you don't notice it. You only notice when you have a bad sup, or the enemy sup is either better or doing something strange, AKA ganking top 2mins. Yeah, think of all the games where you didn't have to worry about your sup, and didn't feel anything amiss... That's him being good. And sometimes he has been good most of the game, but let the ball drop a single time, and now everyone's blaming him. Sups deserve more love, man.
I remember I was swain support, and late game was dueling the top nasus. I won the duel bc I had like 20+ kills (adc was chill with it) and the nasus was underfed. Also, I had ult on the entire time and he just… stood in it. Ofc he yelled at me in all chat about how swain is broken and all that but like, he was fighting a player who was more leveled, had more items, and had an hp sucking ult up the entire time, but expected to win just because I was support so that means I’m always weak apparently. if I hadn’t been fed, obviously I would have lost, but apparently i won because swain is broken and not because I had been performing well that game
Most support players don't even care about spotlight( even tho getting team that appreciate what you do is like a dream) we only have 2 goals, 1st take care of our cry baby enough so they start carrying the game and 2nd make sure the opponents cry baby tilts as much as possible
I play as main support from the begining and i just wanted thank you for spreading some kindness for us supps mains, it's good to see someone mature enough to see what's like to be " that buddy supp"
Literally my last ranked game, top lane Darius kept taking fights he’d obviously lose and started flaming jungle
I, playing support, told him to lay off
Flamed me calling me useless
Ten minutes later I was keeping the whole team alive in enemy base and we won
No honors
Oh my GOD. I can't TELL you how many times I would ping retreat when it wasn't smart to fight. And they'd get themselves killed anyway (MULTIPLE TIMES mind you) and start blaming. Like why do I even bother..

9:14 For enchanters I can say that it gets mostly only noticed if you do well with your counter tools back to back in situation it rly gets felt by your own team.
With Soraka a well timed and positioned E can be very fight winning when u get engaged.
Lulu can nullify one hard engaging champ completely with R and W for 2 seconds. And depending on how well the timing on R was, the frontloaded threat can even be nullified against a lot of engage champs.
Jenna is THE get off me champ, I dont have to describe it more.
Redemption is an item that has such a high impact with semi global range. Even casting it on a single target top or mid, it can allow your teammate to go more aggressive or deter further enemy engage. Same thing in teamfights.
If you are good enough that you use Morgana E reactionary and not preemtively (which I cant, which is why dont play her) you have such high impact because the "uptime" is way higher that way. If the ranged carry can stand in front and "ignore" champs like Blitz, Nautilus, Pyke, Maokai in terms of their CC, it feels so broken honestly, but Im old and slow, so no Morgana for me.
PS: A lot of frontloaded dmg gets off allthough the support did it right, because of buffering. For example, when Shyvanna ults she will always cast the E when ending the animation even if she shouldnt be able to. Ive seen it with Lulu W and Soraka E.
When I first started the game, I was a braum main. That lasted all of a month before I realized that playing braum was like building a treehouse with your forehead as the hammer.
When i played league of legends i discovered i loved to be a support, and almost any kind. I just hate being the "star" i like making others shine. I am already used to people ignore me but that's the main reason of why i play supports anyways.
My problem arises when people act that support is the easiest role, that i am a carried, or that i am dumb. Only the people who did play support understand why is a pain, because you have the obligation to FIRST play the other roles, since your main goal is to support your buddies who will have other roles you need to understand their way of thinking, reasons to do this and abilities, and in the case of a moba you also need to understand the abilities of almost every champion on a base level. So many mental stuff that the supports require to do.
Heck even when i played league of legends on a random match i got paired with someone who did not understand kalista's item and ultimate, i was sadly a Karma because he did not show he wanted to pick up kalista, however i kept my head cool and i taught him the basics and also remind him that the next time he should ask the support to pick up a tank support because of the ultimate. The kalista did actually listen to me and thanks to that because we both kept a cool head we did win.
I do not play it anymore, however if someone does play league or any other game with support role, treat them kindly, trust me, a simple "thanks for the heals" really warms the heart of the support or whatever the support does in that moment. And also if the support tells you something you should listen atleast a bit then think about it, chances are they played your role before anyways and your character.
"all I have to do for you to die is nothing" ~joshstrifehayes
I've been playing league since I was 15. I'm 26 now about to finish college. So around 11 years. 1o of those have been playing support. Not even my friends, many of who I taught or introduced to the game seem to appreciate me to this day, until they are playing without me and start complaining to me how they cant win because there's no vision or they keep dying or the enemy always knows where they are, or they don't get as feed, or struggle setting up objectives, etc. I've complained for years that I lost the love I had for the role. At the start it was about filling in the role nobody wanted to play, after some time I grew to like being able to enable my allies to excel and succeed. It made me happy and I had fun making others shine and feeling part of that success and joy. Over time I've become very unsatisfied do to the lack of appreciation tho, its always "Nice penta x adc", "nice pick jg", "good baron call, how did you know where they where?" nobody ever really sees all I do every game and go forbid I play something like Pyke and steal their thunder. whenever I bring it up they always say something like "go back to adc then or play another role. But that's not really a solution, I want to be appreciated for playing the role I like, the one I'm good at, the one I'm really good at.
But, it is what it is.
Regarding the section on roaming, to be fair, you shouldn't typically roam when your lane is in a state that your ADC can get 2v1'd.
As saying goes in TF2
"Behind every grate Heavy, there is an even greater Medic"
"Behind every pro Soldier, there is a tradwife Medic following his ass" xD
This is why i say most support mains can play jungle cause their jobs are pretty similar, they just provide support in different ways. Ganks and buffs, heals, cc
I was a support main for the longest time, then tried mid maining... I'm still a support at heart, if I still played. But I would get autofilled jungle during my stint as a mid laner, and I had a higher win rate in jungle because all it was, was playing roam support but kill the camps instead of babysit the team's biggest idiot.
idk how much TF2 you played back in the day but from what I remember medics were absolutely loved
He doesn't play other games and maybe a little bit of smash, got tf2 and dota 2 wrong. In dota the supports are the ones carrying the early game.
Fellow Zilean player , with me !
Zilean using R on low health Tristana so she can rocket jump away and return to fight after R runs out (she died and now spams you with pings).
In my days when I played a lot I always told my ADC at the start of the game: play like you have no fear, and if you die you can blame me. A lot of times ADC die because they think they are alone in a fight, they backed off to soon forgetting that I have heals/shields, thinking the support doesn't do much. So once I got their mentality right we would win so much more fights. Also, as a support main I get a minimum of 1 honor per game on average. So I don't think a support goes overlooked as much now as it did seasons ago. I actually picked up support in a time (around season 4) where nobody wanted to play support, and my god it was heaven
I will never pass up an opportunity to make a reference to Brutal Legend. It's one of my favorite games.
"A good roadie knows his whole job is to make someone else look good, keep someone else safe, help someone else do what they were put here to do. A good roadie stays out of the spotlight. If he's doing his job right, you don't even know he's there."
Same goes for supports.
Sounds like god from futurama
I always show appreciation to my support when I play ADC and almost never say anything negative unless they are trolling
Support is the most thankless? Well, kinda true. But at least with support, it's just one guy who hates you. On the other hand, everyone hates their jungler. As a jungler, you are expected to do all things. And if anything goes wrong, even if jungler was doing dragon while the top laner failed their tower dive and died, it's always the jungler's fault.
jungler expected to make tempo. if u r high tempo character and vs some fiddlesticks who outtempo u . then question is not why my jungler is bad its how. then look at team. u have roaming and performing mid and afk top. play for bot with mid. then go top. then go obj. there is a lot of things that u can do as jungler cuz its the only role that is not knitted to a line. if u full clear all day long as karthus or noc without even trying to gank when there r opportunities then sir its jg fault. even useless jg with smite on some important fight can do some impact. take damage. take 1 sec off aggro. anything. league is "complex" game.
The high of being thanked as a support brought me into this role ( and also log horizon)
Yeah isn’t the support seen as having second or third highest influence on a win after jungle and mid in high level play
As someone who was at first discouraged by some back then friends to play support because they wanted me to learn the game first and not get stuck in that awkward trap many baby supports get into - in a way I am grateful. In the end I started maining it and did for years despite how thankless it is - simply because I love some champs in there. But these days whenever I meet a new baby in the role I always make sure to warn them ahead of the role and if they still go for it, try to teach them some tricks so they can climb faster into a position where at least the adc doesnt die the second you go to ward.
To this day I'll never forget a rammus I once had in silver, when I played Yuumi. Every lane was losing and hard flaming, my man just accepted I decided to pull a last hope risk by jumping on him and started perma ganking. We managed to pull a full 180 and win that game, he got praised by everyone but he just redirected it onto me. Never felt as appreciated as that one game.
00:29 that's not what dota players or tf2 players and maybe mmo players think of supports, maybe in the really low ranks but not in anything decent. Mmos the healers are the ones barking around people and you have to beg them sometimes, there's even a meme about, anime vs mmo healers. In dota, early game is determined by the supports, everyone appreciates warding, dust/truesight, smoke plays, smoke breaking, saves/defensive items, kill setups, tp rotates/responses, rune secures, camp stacking, creep pulls, etc. In tf2, medic is a beloved character/class. Shows that you didn't do enough research and based entirely on your league experience. Also for pro dota there's a reason why most captains are pos 5.
League is the only game that supports are not known for not giving sustain and survivability but rather you have hooks and divers to keep the other adcarry dying while stuned for 4 seconds while the other adc just right clicks you... not the smartest game design choice for me at least, never touching this game ever again... but really nice video!
Vars just became enemy no.1 for ADC's after defending supports😂
All the real ADC players know the supports are the real MVP of the team.
Been a support main for years now and this video is literally perfect. No notes
I’m a support main in almost all games so I put babysitting experience on my resume
I personally find myself not enjoying playing DPSes as much as Supports in team games, weirdly. I usually shield/protect/buff teammates in shooter games, and one of my earliest memories playing League was playing as Zilean and figuring out when to slow enemies/speed up allies and Chronoburst for an optimal push. It's a thankless job, yes, but one that I nonetheless satisfying to play. Of course, it comes with a LOT of criticism, both from external and internal forces. But after a while, you kinda get used to it.
Yeah, same here, I always liked the supportive playstyles, but I always liked to be useful and be able to fend off enemies for myself.
I loved playing sunflowers in the Garden Warfare games, you were the squishiest plant, but the only one that could heal itself and it's allies, and your DPS was really good if you could land headshots consistently.
(maybe that's why I like Zyra? I never made that connection before)
If there's a thing I appreciate when it comes to HoK and MLBB os that 1)They don't have means to gain vision until the inhivitor turret is left, and that vision is tenporary and sporadic.
2) In MLBB' case, the role is called Roamer, which helps the player remember that they should roam around the map to provide vision and help other teammates instead of babysitting the adc. In fact, although this is probably different for League and Wild Rift since the map is bigger (hence the need for vision wards imo), during early mid game you probably won't be in the same lane as your adc cuz they are fine as long as they are farming and usually everyone else is occupied either in skirmishes, harassing mid lane, preparing to steal the enemy jungle or watching over neutral objectives and daring the enemy to make the first move.
There's a chance the adc will be ganked, but in these smaller maps, you have a better overall vision of who is where, especially if the roamer is roaming.

the difference between soloq and coordinated support is actually just the biggest between all 5 roles
Support is the only role that’s actually 100% team dependent and that’s why is the worst to play in soloq. You can wombo combo 5 people but if your MF doesn’t ult or she’s super late it’s useless. Who says adc is the worst understand but you forget that you can still farm, we don’t(and now you have better items too).
Supports are the stay-at-home moms of League.
"there is no central theme" excuse me, every traditional support (ie, not ones that were made for another role) have a form of peel. this is because supports as a central theme are made to make up for the primary weaknesses in carries by helping to slow or lock down major threats like assassins.
this was like a no brainer???
Almost every jungler, mid, and most tops has some form of peel, it's so ubiquitous as to be redundant.
In every game I've ever played, i started off thinking "wow my support is so ass, its so easy". Then I start maining support and its hard and my team is useless and I gotta find a way to carry with support.
I agree, supp is the most thinkless role
The pyke that ganks your lane 3 times and kills you wants to disagree. But I know you were joking... right?... RIGHT?
Truuuue expecting brain dead janna press her E on you is worth praising! If support in a team can press buttons it's truly amazing. But if i being honest i hope they make game 4 on 4. :)
4v4 league would probably cut out the midlaner honestly.
You kinda need the toplaner for lategame teamfights, you need the jungler to fill the dead-space in the map with jungle camps, and you need the adc to do sustained damage. You need the support to fill the gaps in the team.
Mid meanwhile is a role defined by it's flexibility - the point of mid is map control but jg does that better now, it's 1v1s but that hardly matters, it's mages but that's not a real role more of an item pack... etc. It's functions can just be eaten up by every other role. :)
I think the reason we see so many Gigachad Braum memes is because when he relieves pressure, it feels more flashy and impactful as he jumps to you and literally puts up a giant shield in between you the enemy.
Finally some apreciation for how support works...
It’s very interesting how influential a support can be. I know that personally, as a supp player of many years, when a team actually listens to my pings and helps me have vision prio, 75% of those games are easy wins because the team has synergy, and allows me to play leader based off vision, and upcoming objectives. When teams DONT group up around vision, or help me clear enemies, we lose and it’s obvious we aren’t winning.
I do try to play as the leader in my games as I have watching the MAP and items, as my priority. I also will try to rotate to help jungler instead of bot if needed/fed.
I hardly ever get any positive messages in chat, but when we do win, it feels good even thought no one really understands all my efforts :’)
I main support, and can confirm, this is how we are treated, albeit mainly when queuing with randoms, I have some teammates that I play with, and boy do they praise me for a good play. for example, there was this one game where I went lulu, and my mid laner went Gragas, I forgot the other champs on my team sadly, but it was a five stack, and yes, we were losing, and near the end, we were fighting around drake to try and stop them from getting soul because our jungler basically abandoned bot lane, and right before I died in the drake pit, I ulted Gragas because I knew it would help him get out alive, and it for sure did, he then continued to thank me for like 30 seconds in our vc 😅. bro was glad I saved his life lol, while sacrificing my own.
Supports have different goals depending on their picks and if there's anything
Engage supports
- have to get picks during laning phase
- if you can't get kills in bot lane, go roam and try to help get kills someplace else UNLESS the enemy support is also an engage support.
- if enemy support is an enchanter, you're free to roam.
- if your adc is dogsht or you lost lane, wait till laning phase is over and support your fed teammate. abandon your adc yes.
Enchanter/Defensive supports
- protect adc and survive laning phase.
- don't need to kill enemy bot lane in laning phase coz you guys scale
- if enemy support is engage support, don't leave your adc unless the enemy support roams first.
- if enemy support is also an enchanter, you can roam if you want.
- if your adc is dogsht or you lost lane, wait till laning phase is over and just support your fed teammate. abandon your adc yes.
Now you can roam if you want and just tell your adc to play safe. But adcs are braindead dumbasses who would rather walk up, die, and lose 3 full waves than lose 3 minions, and then have the nerver to blame you for their poor life choices.
As a support, you not only have to deal with YOUR MENTAL HEALTH, BUT YOUR ADC'S AS WELL. coz these morons are so entitled and down right delusional that they would cry and type ff, or straight up throw the game if they're ever behind, despite you getting your top, mid and junglers fed + objectives.
It's kinda like playing Jungle, except you're expected to not just camp bot lane, but build a house and stay with your abusive partner at all times, and when you do decide to leave and interact with others, you get insults thrown at you.
And then you have the "COUPLE DUO" SUPPORTS
- only picks enchanters (nami, seraphine, soraka, lulu, yuumi, and lux)
- usually paired with a smurfing adc
- spends the entire game glued to them as their duo destroys everyone mechanically
- types nice one babe in the chat whenever said duo gets a kill
- types support diff after a win
- has a sassy attitude and believes that they're a better support player than everyone else
- Can't win when playing solo and will always look for a duo to boost them up the ranks.
- hardstuck bronze or silver and can only get to gold or plat thanks to their smurfing duo partner.
The closest thing that we have to accurately measure a support player's skill is their ability to win with different teammates. This also applies to all roles, but more so for supports.
So RIOT, pls remove duo queue for ALL RANKS.
"Maybe I don't have the strength to wield
An elven sword or a mythril shield
But my heart is strong. And my wand is too.
So try to keep in mind: without me you'd be so screwed"
Reasons I don't like to play support:
1. I feel like my job is to take care of someone I don't know and that could treat me like sh*t
2. Support items are not fun
3. Felling like every role is important and support is only there to have a fifth one
4. Laning a 2v2 and get less experience and gold. I wish support had more options to play than just stick to a lane until your ADC has 3 items
Autofilled supps really give the role a bad name tbh. Lots of people just pick some random mid or top lane champ and sit in bush and do nothing.
As a support main and UX designer, I appreciated the call outs.
A bit off releated but in Wild Rift it's a lot worse.
THEY ALL, expect you to play peel supports despite them not being able to carry.
But if you pick anything a bit of the ordinary like, Senna, Gragas, Ashe or Brand, all the team goes nuts calling you a troll.
This is very funny to me as 3 of the best toplaners right now are adcs making that you have an adc for a top or mid, and pretty much everyone can pick off meta, like Yone or nilah jgl, a mage in bot, etc. But If I do it I'm trolling and they are not.
Even Riot hates us to that level, we even saw it with Camille support recently, NOBODY WAS PLAYING HER, again NOT A SINGLE PERSON.
As she was bad atm in top and jgl.
Someone discovers she can be used as a supp and Riot immediatelly adjusts her to no longer be good...
Same happened with Pantheon (towershot block was op but there was no need to change his E).
It's like they want us to be nothing but a pet with shields and heals with a different twist from each other only.
Still as a main supp, I'm thankful for the recognition. ❤
I really cannot thank you enough for how well you treated this topic, it's really difficult and almost impossible to make other players understand this role (especially in-game). Well done!
Seeing my teammates type "I love you sona/raka/etc" after game actually fills my heart with such happiness
Being a jg main I drastically improved in jg by playing sup/mid. You have all the impact of jg and all the pressure of not needing gold/lvls. Also no lanes treat jg as a lane. They don’t help with objectives, vision, invades, invading, they don’t understand lane prio means you can do anything other than afk in lane and transfer that pressure. As support of mid I can roam, deep ward, fall back for free kills to help my jg, prep objectives, start objectives so they can come back and just smite.
Being a jg main and playing around helping them when I can you see the appreciation and how hard they can snowball other lanes that you can also help with.
To many people focus on cs and crashing waves. They don’t understand every crash is a free roam. Especially if you do a slow crash. I can’t tell you how often as sup I freeze wave to give jg a huge opening and adc emerald and below often break it. Low diamond isn’t as common. I think I’ll easily push past low diamond now. I’ve sadly been enjoying the game and all the praise as mainly support because the value you can add is unreal.
I've been playing support for almost 5 years and for me the worst thing is knowing that there are games that you are going to lose no matter what, one can be playing nearly perfect but oh oh the adc flashed towards the enemy team and dies in the final tf, that situation in specific did happened once to me and the entire team flamed me because I didn't shield and healed the adc after that flash, I was playing leona... 💀. People think you just heal and shield, I have been in the situation where I have not that many assits but we have all the ovjectives thanks to me managing vision and the team flames. I don't flame my team mates that's rather stupid but sometimes I wonder if they actually are bots
This made me remember a game long time ago when I played Lulu support doing whatever I could to not let my team die and one person who gave me recognition was enemy mid "Lulu stop carrying them" and it made me feel really fulfilled for some reason
