Gus is one of my oldest friends, and if we still lived in the same city, he'd be in a ton of my videos. When I was in Orlando, I wanted to do a video with him, and he suggested Blue Beetle. I hope you all enjoy watching the reaction and discussion of the movie! (You'll also probably notice we have a very similar sense of humor.)
To be honest I think there's alot of things you toss up to tropes, without really considering what you're actually saying. For example, you talk about Jenny and Jaimies relationship. And how there isn't enough there. I disagree. Jenny sees a reflection on how Jaimies family is right away with Jaimie and his sisters relationship. Or the relationship that he has with his family. It's a void that she desperately tries to fill with her philanthropy work

Okay, Holden. Real talk. You have to get Gus back again for another video somehow. Kidnap him if you have to. The chemistry and humor between you two is absolutely hilarious. And I love that he's a nerd like you.
I've been trying to get Gus into DBZ since we were kids! I took him to Soupa Saiyan in Orlando when I was there (and this will be a part of a vlog), but he thinks it's about time for him to try it out.
I love Xolo Maridueña performance as Blue Beetle. He plays my favorite character, Miguel, in Cobra kai, which I'm dying for Holden and Jen to react to someday, along with the Karatie Kid films. I think every role Xolo Maridueña plays is a role he was born play.
@carriesmith742 I wonder if Cobra kai will die in S6, lol. I hope Miguel wins the Sekai Takei. I wanted him to be a two-time all valley champion like Daniel and Johnny, so I hope he wins the Sekai Takei since he didn't win the last all valley.
Holden mentioned that the Blue Beetle ship reminds him of Nite Owl's craft from Watchmen. That makes perfect sense as Nite Owl is an analog for Blue Beetle because DC wasn't comfortable using those classic characters in such a gritty story, they had Alan Moore create new similar characters for the Watchmen universe.
It’s clear Holden and Gus are great friends 🥰 Gus’ impression of Holden is spot on. I stepped away from my screen just before that point and for a second I wasn’t sure who was speaking 😆😉

Just so it has its own space: I would love to see Holden and Jen do a watch/react to the greatest depiction to date of the DC universe, Young Justice! The Blue Beetle arc in that series is awesome!
I lost my uncle last year to alcohol and George Lopez played the Uncle PERFECTLY. Everything about his character was the exact way my uncle was and i cried the whole ride home just thinking about him. Overall i loved the movie although it was pretty cliche. 8/10 for me.
I lost my uncle 4 years ago to alcohol as well. This was my dad's older brother and i happened to go with my dad to this movie. we were both extremely amused and very emotionally moved by just how perfectly George Lopez and the writers coincidentally captured who my uncle was in the character of Rudy. We spent the drive home after the movie reminiscing about my uncle and missing the hell out of him. I give all the kudos to George Lopez and director Angel Manuel Soto for bring my uncle back to life for a couple of hours for me and my dad.
I love the inclusion of the Ted Kord/Blue Beetle history! As many surely know, the TK/BB was a classic DC character, very much in the spirit of Batman/Ironman. What might have been cool, is some mention/reference/brief appearance by Ted Kord's best friend, Booster Gold, a time-traveling hero from the future! That said, Jaime Reyes with the scarab is the Blue Beetle of the 21st century! I would love to see Holden and Jen do a watch/react to the greatest depiction to date of the DC universe, Young Justice! The Blue Beetle arc in that series is awesome!
I really liked this movie! Nite Owl from Watchmen IS based on the Second Blue Beetle: Ted Kord! In fact all of Watchmen characters are based on old Charlton Comics that were acquired later by DC (Nite Owl -> Blue Beetle, Rorschach -> The Question, The Comedian -> Peacemaker, Dr Manhattan -> Captain Atom, etc..)
Both of my parents and grandparents are Peruvian, but I grew up mostly in El Paso, Tx which is where Jaime is from in the comics, and it was so cool seeing this movie. I have a lot of respect for mexican culture, and growing up around it most my life just made it even more great getting to see a Hispanic super hero like Blue Beetle on the big screen. The movie was also so hyped down here in El Paso that we actually painted a Blue Beetle mural on the side of one of our movie theaters...even tho....it didnt take place in El Paso....hmmm
Enjoyed this watch along. You guys had a fun dynamic together. You can easily see it's two old friends that can pick up right where they left off no matter how long theu haven't seen each other.
Holden you’re outa pocket for that title 🤣 I’m Mexican, and I can speak on behalf for most Latinos in, we love a some representation and it’s in no way offensive we don’t care 😂🙌🏼 but “Amigo” is crazy 😭 Next video “Watching Black Panther with my black friend, my JIT” 💀
Holden making the connection of the old blue beetle ship with the owl from watchmen was really cool. A fun fact is that the owl was actually based on the blue beetle. Steve Ditko (creator of spider-man) after leaving Marvel started to work to a small company called Charlton Comics and created a lot of characters there including blue beetle and the peacemaker. In the 80’s DC bought Charlton Comics and offered the characters to Alan Moore to use in watchmen once Alan’s is a huge Steve Ditko fan. In the end both DC and and Alan Moore decided to not use those characters in watchmen but all the new characters introduced in watchmen were based on this Charlton Comics characters. The Night Owl was based in blue beetle and the Comedian was based on the Peacemaker and all the other watchmen characters to. Cool, Right ?
The OMAC project in the comics leads to some very interesting story arcs in DC Comics. The cancelled Justice League Mortal film would have featured the OMACs and Maxwell Lord as the main villains. James Gunn has acknowledged Blue Beetle or at least Xolo as Blue Beetle as canon and has also recently cast his brother Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord. If the heads of the DCU wanted a solid build up for a Justice League movie, they've planted all the seeds necessary to grow that garden.
bro Gus is hilarious! we need more of this friendship if there is the opportunity. ALSO: all of that “familia” talk, and not one impression of vin or the FF crew 😮

The afterlife scene with Jaime's father is a reference from and old mexican movie called "Macario" wich is the same movie his dad was watching at the beginning of the movie. I just love that! This movie reminds more like Kamen Rider than any other superhero(i call this movie the mexican Kamen Rider), and maybe that, and because i love Blue Beetle is why i love this movie so much. It triggers me a lot when Holden calls it like ironman, but thats because i'm familiar with the Tokusatsu genre(Jaime holding the big sword looks like a very similar shot from Kamen Rider Den-O), and that's okay xD

Why is it that whenever they have a hero of a specific ethnicity, the whole family is included in the heroics. Like Echo for example. But i must admit Blue Beetle made it seem more fun
As a Hispanic, I tried judging this film without the pandering, or the (very cringy) Spanglish. That being said, the Chapulín Colorado scenes caught me off guard and I loved them. It fits perfectly that the most popular Latino superhero of all time is also named after a bug and a color. Also, fun fact: Despite playing mother and son in the movie, the actress who plays Nana Reyes is 3 years younger in real life than the actor who plays Alberto Reyes.
I disagree. It wasn't pandering and the Spanglish is exactly how my family talks. Just because your family might not talk like that doesn't mean there aren't any families being represented by it. I never once felt pandered to. It was authentic representation of a mexican family.
Holden, you and Jen ABSOLUTELY need to check out Cobra Kai, ESPECIALLY if you've seen the OG Karate Kid movies. Xolo Mariduena, who plays Jaime Reyes, got his real start and got him this role from that show. It's FANTASTIC. GREAT fight choreography with the perfect amount of cheesy and 80's nostalgia. Xolo Mariduena, who plays Jaime Reyes, got his real start and got him this role from that show. It's FANTASTIC. GREAT fight choreography with the perfect amount of cheesy and 80's nostalgia. Being a Cobra Kai fan made me enjoy this movie that much more!
Next up, “Watching Black Panther 2 with my Hispanic Amigo and Black Homie!”
It was a by the book superhero movie, but I enjoyed the hispanic references. Overall, I liked the movie.
Gotta bring in the Hispanic homie for the Hispanic themed movie 💀😂😂
I love the channel name change!
its weird not hearing "Holden Thomas Hardman!" in 1 of these
