- Juilliard trained opera singer reacts to The Righteous Brothers performing Unchained Melody. 🎶❤️ The Righteous Brothers were an American musical duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. They began performing together in 1962 in the Los Angeles area as part of a five-member group called the Paramours, but adopted the name "The Righteous Brothers" when they embarked on their recording career as a duo.
The best-known version of "Unchained Melody" was recorded by the duo The Righteous Brothers for Philles Records in 1965. The lead vocal was performed solo by Bobby Hatfield, who later recorded other versions of the song credited solely to him.

So many have covered this song, most notably Elvis, but none can touch this performance. Legendary.
My wife and I were at the mall and that song came on and everyone froze, transfixed from one end of the mall to the other. No one moved until the song was over. What a tribute to one of the greatest love songs ever recorded.
Thank you for your lovely comment. Hope to see at my Premiere of a new reaction video today in less than 15 minutes?
..."greatest songs ever recorded" supported by an angel's voice.
My mom wanted to go shopping but my dad wanted to see this. So we were at Sears in the TV area and they had it on. The people who knew were there watching with us. Even in the store he got a ovation!!
Everyone has memories of this song…I could see this happening…

And remember miss Maggie, this was on live tv, no auto tuner, live band and 1 take.
Autotune was not available back then.
Well back then they didn’t need it! True natural talent was the order of the day…
@@nitaonstad9965 Computers were big as hangar for 747 back then.
What impresses me beyond credibility is that was not in a studio with tons of voice-enhancing equipment.
He simply held a basic microphone at varying distances from his mouth and sang his heart out.
This is widely considered one of the best live vocal performances ever recorded.
Of course...I tend to agree.
Yep:)
NO AUTOTUNE... He just “cut to the chase”... and was in perfect pitch and did only as Bobby Hatfield could do and “owned” Unchained Melody...and A little known fact about this performance; He was very nervous(by his own admission) because his parents were in the audience. Nobody will even come close to Bobby Hatfields version of Unchained Melody

He does a wink/lip bite at the end that's almost a Mike drop
THE Best live vocal performance ever recorded. Period!
I love watching these young women react to this beautiful song. I’m 75 and I remember back when this came out. I didn’t appreciate it as I do now. Beautiful. I hope Bobby knows just how much joy he has brought to so many people.
Class of '65? I'm a little surprised that you said you didn't appreciate it that much when it first came out. I thought it was swoonworthy. And, of course, it still is. ❤ My friends and I feel so fortunate to have been born into the generation whose memories were built on the music of that era.
Today, he would have a hell of a "Standing Ovation" in. But there was many could singing in those years, something they can't do today...
He had that ANGEL FACE to match that voice. The high note at the end was something popular male vocalists did in those days. But Bobby's voice made girls melt. They should have made Bobby Hatfield dolls! I would have bought one. ❤
I can't believe he did this while sick with a head cold and performing live for the first time for his parents. He was so good.
Only Bobby Hatfield can truly sing this song the way he sings it. Many have tried but few can come even close.
You sre absolutely right!!!!

He bit his lip at the end his parents were in the audience pleased he did a good job
Don't forget the little bite lip, that always captures me.
100%
A lip bite is not a sign of confidence ,it is a sign of insecurity or stress..which for me makes it all the more endearring. Confidence was Not an enduring trait at that time. It was considered arrogant.
No one ever heard a voice like his. Bobby was a 'counter-tenor, with a natural high range that a lot of Sopranos could not reach. Though he died at the age of 63, he left a legacy of beautiful music and his angelic voice, such as we will never hear again. I call this "Bobby's Song" because no one could ever come up to his standard.
He's not a countertenor. Listen to choirboys. That's what CT sound like
I am 70. And miss the days we see in this video. Thank you for the memories.
I love how he just bites his bottom lip at the end! His voice just melted out of his throat, no bulging throat veins or anything, just butter, like it was no effort at all. Pure God given talent that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it!
Perfectly said 🥰
He was nervous as sh....
Hi mother was in the audience, and it was the first time he have to sing it in front of her.
He was so nervous for fucking up in front of her.

No one "gave him" the ability to sing well, he practiced, practiced and practiced more.
Couldn’t possibly agree more. Getting goosebumps right now.
there is a time when talented gifted people are born into this world JUST to entertain people around the world. Bobby is one of them.
And there are still people born with it .
Man, there is so SO much more than mere entertainment happening there. Way deeper.
True natural pipes on him. No auto tune, no computer enhancements. Just raw pure lovely crooning! Was raised on this music thanks to my parents who are now in their mid 70s. Truly soulful!

A true classic. Many of the "younger" watchers saw some of this song from Top Gun.
I agree. Maggie, you have got to listen to the duet.
Yes, it should be a crime to not listen to both Unchained Melody and You've Lost That Loving Feeling.
Absolutely please listen to You've Lost That Loving Feeeling so you can see what magic they do when performing together
100% agree. I like both but prefer You've Lost That Loving Feeling. The way their voices play together is excellent.
Man is wooing a JUILLIARD trained opera singer after 60 plus years!! WOW!!
There will never be another Bobby Hatfield.
in the giant population of America, there ALWAYS are more Bobby Hatfields . . since the corporate takeover of music in the 80s , we will never get to hear them
One of the most beautiful songs ever written… The amazing voice of this man never ceases to amaze me
I read that this song was originally performed in a movie about a guy in prison.
This duo had 2 of the finest voices in modern music. Thanks for your reaction.
Yea, Bobby Hatfield brought so much joy to his listeners.
Definitely, this is the BEST version. The range and control of Bobby's voice-combined with the effortless transitions really augment this. And he does not distract you by putting on a show (gyrating) or making painful facial gestures.
It was all about the story and the singer conveying the emotion of the story with his or her beautiful voice. It wasn't about vocal athletics.
It's incredible that he's only 25 years old here!!!! This is way way before autotune obviously and this is absolutely 100% live and no lip syncing. At 25 his voice is so incredibly powerful/polished It's amazing. It's unfortunate that Bobby is no longer with us his voice was absolutely beautiful/majestic and a gift from God. Bill and Bobby together were absolute perfection. Stay safe😷

Tons of singers don't use autotune......in fact I'm willing to bet that you don't even know what that is or why it is used.
@@tc1817 Far too many of today's "singers" use autotune, and it's mostly used to cover up for their incredibly inaccurate singing and inability to stay on pitch.

The perfect word to describe the Righteous Brothers was Classy. They no doubt the best duo in music history and perfectly complement each other.
A other duo where real brothers, The Everly brothers, they had also a perfectly harmony together.

Effortless.
It takes a lot of hard work to make that seem easy.
Seriously. I was breathing for him. The most charming performance.
What an amazing voice he had. Really beautiful tone to it. Also, crystal clear diction. incredibly beatiful.
That fact that his face never changed when he hit them notes was amazing and he made it look so effortless! The 60s and 70s had the best music ever made! I was so blessed to experience these eras. Love the reactions of the younger generations thank you.

@@DavidSmith-kn7ef Hibbler's was the 3d recording
@@DavidSmith-kn7ef That’s the version my Dad knows and loves. I got him to listen to the Righteous Brother’s version about a year or so ago, and he likes it, but his emotions are attached to the 1955 version - which he then introduced me to. He already had 5 of us kids (ended up being 8 of us) by the time the Righteous Brother’s version came out, so he didn’t have much time to listen to the radio by that point. Come to think of it, there is another reason he wasn’t familar with this version: I remember us having cars without radios when I was very young, as Dad thought it provided a dangerous distraction while driving back at that time. By the mid 70s he relented, which we were all happy about.

standard after its release. Hatfield changed the melody in the final
verse and many subsequent covers of the song are based on his version.
The Righteous Brothers recording achieved a second round of great
popularity when featured in the film in 1990. In 2004, it was number 27 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema.
" I don't know that I have ever heard one of the other versions ever. Mr. Hatfield killed it, and nothing else is going to ever replace it.

No, they didn't have digital cut and paste, but they did have litteral cut the recording tape and tape it back together with a film tape. Partly where the term cut and paste came from. Mostly from cutting pictures with scissors and pasting them into other media collage style. Old school of what we do on computers now. But recordings were cut and spliced long before digital recording was a thing. After vinyl albums only, but before digital, we had this thing that overlapped both called tape recording. Both reel to reel and cassette styles. Recording booths used reels as did videography. You litteraly cut out the parts you didn't like and taped the recording tape/film back together.
@@thomasarussellsr Yes they did have some sound engineers skilled in the splicing techniques, however if I recall correctly they still tended to favor single takes during the earlier use of using tape media. Remembering that the Righteous Brothers as a duo started their recording career in 1962, and the early 4 track recorders weren't in use until 1964.
I would hazard a guess and suggest that many of the smaller labels (such as the first one the duo were signed to) would not have had too many sound engineers, much less ones skilled enough to skillfully splice tapes to commercial quality.
I'm more then happy to be proven wrong though, as that way all reading learn more!
LOL! Thank you for your suggestion! 😍 Don't miss tomorrow's Premiere!
This is the firs time I've seen this clip with Andy Williams at the start and end. I love the look on Andy's face at the end. He's clearly thinking "how dare the little bastard come on my show and sing like that."
Haha
Jive Bunny :: he was used to being upstaged he had the Osmand brothers and the Jackson five perform on his show more than once.
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I see nothing problematic with Blue Eyed Soul as a descriptive term. It’s pretty accurate. 😉
Totally true but we are dealing with snowflakes in a modern world where everything and I mean everything is a problem😢😱
Personally,I have always loved The Righteous Brothers👍
Completely harmless and endearing term they were given by fellow black singers
In Britain a similar style was called Northern Soul because most of the singers involved came from the north of England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland - people like Steve Winwood, Van Morrison, and The Animals.
Soul music has no color......Just feeling.
Back in the 60's, at the beginning of their career, they did face some issues. Black radio stations wouldn't play their music because they knew they were white guys. And white radio stations didn't play them because they thought they were black. Medley himself have said it was not a racial thing though, more like how society was back then. Also, it was a black disc jockey who coined the "Blue Eyed Soul", as a way to tell his black audience that these guys are really white.
In 2 worlds.......AMAZINGLY MAGNIFICENT..........ETERNAL GRATITUDE BOBBY 🙏🏽💚😇💯‼️‼️‼️
This song played during a pivotal scene in the movie "Ghost". On every album they had one solo song each, and this was one of them.
This live performance is vastly better than even the studio version used in the movie.
I still get goosebumps every time I hear this song
Bobby makes it look easy to sing like an angel. Other singers grimace like they're trying to squeeze the notes out of their arse. Bobby was smooth, relaxed, soulful and gifted.
EXACTLY! I have such a hard time watching singers who grimace when they sing.
I have enjoyed the voices of the Righteous Brothers and above all this outstanding song since 1965 when I was 15 years old. Since then, I have considered Unchained Melody as the most beautiful, romantic and nostalgic song in pop music. Hy Zaret wrote the for the 1955 prison film Unchained (hence the title) . The story is about a prisoner who is nostalgic to return to experience the love of his wife and children. So the song became a standard and one of the most recorded song of the 20th century. Outstanding!!
Girl, you should have heard them back then. Pure heaven!! Have not heard their equal since!! I love the lyrics, the pure musicality of it come second! At the time, this was the song of the decade, and as it turns out, many decades. There have been many versions by many prominent singers, but Hatfield's version is by far the best. No autotune, no digital enhancement. Most artists today cannot compare.
Thank you for your lovely comment. Hope to see you later today for my FUN Reactions Livestream?
no auto tune or any other tricks Just pure talent

By the way, You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling, was the most played song on the radio between 1964-2000.
RIP Bobby. Absolutely effortless and no one does it better.
