Mistakes In How I Ordered My Hammock Gear Burrow!

  • After giving the Hammock Gear Burrow Econ a fair run with close to a dozen nights, I decided to sell it and replace with some new options. I picked up the Sierra Designs Cloud 800 20 Degree sleeping bag and the new Outdoor Vitals Stormloft 15 Degree Quilt. Haven't spent any nights in either of the new bags, but looking forward to some trips coming up to test out my new gear.

    You should change the title to "My bad decisions on a top quilt". It kind of sounds like you are disparaging Hammock Gear, when you really under estimated the warmth and the quilt width that you needed. They state that the 50 inch is for hammocks and the 55 inch for ground sleeping. You are correct on the snaps having issues and they have since gone to a zipper.

    • @BackcountryExposure

      William Kerber not disparaging Hammock Gear, in fact one of the first things i say is that it was a fantastic product. Likely i will consider buying another quilt from them in the future.

      Totally agree, poor title. Why not just change the title to a review of the other two or my new quilts. Not cash in on hg shopper clicks, poor show.

      He keeps the title this way because it’s clickbait. “Oh, somebody said something bad about HG!? I must see!” It’s classless.

    It's a little disappointing that you are ditching cottage gear for made in China by big companies. Why not go with a UGQ bandit, loco libre ghost pepper, or an EE revelation? The bandit can be had in 800fp for $200ish dollars. Plus you can customize everything!

    They make a wide one, and have for years, specifically for ground sleeping. You should have done better research.

    I love my Paria Outdoor Products Thermodown Quilt 15. I've owned it for over a year now and it's been great and you can't beat the price. The coldest I've used it in so far is 27 degrees.

    Great job! Finally a good look at the OV 15 degree top quilt! So many reviewers just pull a down product out of its stuff sack and shoot a review without allowing the down to loft up! Yours looks really nice and lofty! I’ve had nothing but cozy warm nights in my OV Aerie quilt , I’m strongly considering the 15 degree top quilt by OV or the Paria 15 degree quilt to use ground camping in colder weather. Can’t wait to see your review on it and how warm it is compared to the Paria 15 degree quilt. I’ll make my decision then! Again, great job on proper prep wk before showing a product!

    Looking to buy a quilt. Your title sucks. Change it to "learn from mistakes when ordering a quilt.". The title does not explain the content of the video whatsoever. Thanks for making this, it's excellent content.

  • @sacredtrails740
    @sacredtrails740 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Sierra Design has down on the bottom side ....which you dont need with a good sleeping pad.
    Which is why the quilt system was utilized .Less weight , more down for loft on the top side for colder temps.

    Great overview of the quilts. It's nice that it wasn't a major quality issue that let to selling the quilt. The burrow is on my radar for a winter quilt nice to know I will need to go with the wide for dual use with both my hammock and tent setups if I choose that one.

    Oh man same with my nemo tango solo quilt. My nemo bags are great but the quilt definitely comes up short and cold. Or should I say narrow. The nemo quilt is 52 inches which is just not wide enough for ground sleeping.

    I had the same issue with my Outdoor Vitals 15 degree quilt when it arrived. It took a look bit to unclump the down and spread it evenly through the quilt. It looks like it will be a great product though.

    I've got the Paria quilt and the Outdoor Vitals synthetic quilt. I love the OV Loftek quilt. Its warm and being in the Pacific Northwest dealing with moisture the synthetic fill works great even when damp (or wet as happened when my gear went into the Puget Sound) .
    And now after watching this video last night my wife wants me to get her one of the Sierra Designs cloud bags... so thanks for that :)

    Nice new quilts! I found out 2 years ago hammock camping in the winter next to Lake Superior is when I needed a good quilt. It was cold and windy is when I realized that I needed more coverage to keep warmer. I like how they make the first one more like a sleeping bag and it also can be vented if needed.

    I have a 0 degree HG Burrow and love it. But it is the wide since I knew I'd be using on the ground more than in a hammock during the winter. That Sierra Designs bag looks nice. I'm going to need something like a 20 degree for the JMT next year so let us know how that bag works out.

    I had the snap econ burrow and never had an issue with the snaps. I ended up selling it because I wanted to try the new baffle and zipper design. When I finally got the quilt, the duck down reeks so bad compared to the econ I sold. And the zipper actually unzips during the night. I wish I had kept my older econ burrow.

      @@BackcountryExposure Good deal.....while primarily a hammock camper, I have been looking at Pyramid style tipi tents off and on, for those occasions when unable to use a hammock. This Luxe tent looks interesting and I will def check out any videos on it. Thks much for the info about it. Just subscribed to your channel and looking fwd to your videos. I own some of the OV gear and have been pleased with it and their customer service, including both the top and underquilts. So you never did a review on the Outdoor Vitals quilt. How does it compare to the equivalent temperature rating Paria Products quilt?

    • @BackcountryExposure
      @BackcountryExposure  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christoph Dollis I have not yet... that said, for me the Paria quilts have been warmer, but I prefer the baffling of the OV quilts. I do enjoy the OV quilt though. For the price point it’s a great product. I’d just add 10-15° to the temp rating and not take it lower than that.

  • @jamesbadham228
    @jamesbadham228 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There's a reason they suggest a wider width for ground sleeping. Also, 40-degree for high alpine is not a good choice, as you discovered. It regularly drops down to 30 after an 80-degree day. SD bag: if you sleep on top of all the stuff under you, it's defeating the purpose of a quilt, which is lighteter because it doesn't include fabric that doens't insulate because you're crushing it under you. It's also lame that you don't demonstrate or lie in the new version with it attached to the pad Lame vid.
