Maybe the lesson here is that the additional length of the handle provides tremendous lever power, momentum, and velocity, enough even to snap a thick piece of steel. Shorter knives are not able to provide similar leverage.
Can see where and how it broke quite easily, but was designed as a self defense machete kind of knife. Amazing how much damage they can take and still be fully functional though, and the lock is just as strong as a fixed blade for most applications. Usually Being nymble along with fast and light does not bode well for extreme hard use. Always a trade off but I think the Espada xl handles it quite well. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
Excellent video JOE X I have one of those and glad you tested it now I know it's limitations, and that important. Like one comment person stated it's pure for selfdefense, slashing , thrusting and intimidation. Still a good knife and your test help prove that 100% In my opinion. ⚔️💰⚔️ No other Folding Knife that large can take what that one toke You beat the crap out of that to show it's strengths and weaknesses 💰🎯💰
I am finally buying this knife because of your extreme tests on it… I’m sold. Having said that, have any folders ever beat that stump test? I appreciate your efforts dude… subscribed
The bigger you go with a Stainless Steel Blade the more fragile the blade becomes from what I have been told. And Carbon Steel is tougher but on a pocket knife especially one that big rust would be a major issue 😎⚔️😎
The tip of the AUS10 steel breaks easily, I noticed this too. Then again, this knife is a fighter. Not a crowbar type of knife and when having some brain people will not use it like that . It stabs really good. And the lock is ridiculous strong.
@@joex Nah, not really. You just like to see the limits. I've done this too often also. Breaking the blade doesn't mean the knife's no good. It means that you know what you should not be doing with it, and also by all kinds of tests you know what it is really good at.
Joe you must really hate that car 😂 I EDC one of these several days a week. Good to know I can stab the shit out of a random car hood or fender and not worry 😁 Please don't stop making this content 👍
The end of a big hard tree stump like this is not a good place to test the tip in my opinion. It is just too tough, if you can stab the tip in deep enough you will eventually break almost any knife. Probably better to use side of the log for tip test, as the tip has a chance to break out a peace of a log. It is a good test for only the mega unbreakable knives. You can probably break even 4Max Scout and the Silent Hero if you get them into that end of a stump, or maybe not.
Maybe show the knives holding up heavy amounts of weight (labeled) so we can see how many pounds of pressure it can withstand before it actually breaks. So I can know the limits of what I could pry open. And I love your channel🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Lynn Thompson would tell you that is extreme abuse of a knife special a folding knife. I myself have broken a lot of cold steel knifes but the locks never failed at all.
Awesome video Joe! I have this knife and it is my favorite folder in my collection. However, your tests continue to show the truth of steel choices. Harder is not always better as it becomes more brittle. I would love to see this beast of a knife with a convex grind, 1055 (South African heat treat) steel, and an extra thick tip (similar to the talwar but even thicker).
Also Joe, I hope you invest in a gauntlet for your wrist when hitting the spine of the knife. I had this knife close on a friends finger... normal gloves will not save your hand. For your safety and continued testing get some steel on that hand! Stay awesome man!
Late response i know.. But it Has nothing to do with steel choice bro. This knife in any steel would break stabbing and putting tremendous torque on a blade. No knife is ment to wack cinder block and stab huge stumps and then try to pry the wood apart. It's just about the right tool for the job. This knife will absolutely not snap doing what knives are intended to do. Fixed blade would snap doing this ridiculousness. You want to chop stumps get an Axe not a pocket knife lol. I'd trust my life with this knife for utility/edc/self defense/food prep etc. Don't go smacking cinder blocks and trying to split oak trees and this knife will last a lifetime
@@xPureRage Hi, I know knives are not designed for this, however... that does not mean I can't ask for one that is morphed with a prybar haha. I still love this knife and it has not broken on me.
Cold Steel is known for their insanely tough blades. Even a giant folder using AUS10A can be this tough, a smaller S35VN folder will definitely be a lot tougher than this.
@Noah Vinkel Hansen Definitely a Pocket Sword ⚔️ it lives up to it's name as a Espada aka Pocket Sword , the test was great and it still can do some Lite Duty Bush Craft Task , the test was a comparison and toughness test and one we would probably not have the opportunity to see if not for the good test JOE X is doing on his channel. One of the best things about Cold Steel is that they actually do make dedicated knives for stabbing, big and thin, such as the Espada. Which also makes these knives some of the best for slicing cardboard.

Joe the destroyer of all knifes 🔪 has done it again , you are a beast 💪, love your vids , I love the espada large xl knife.
thanks margaret!! May i ask, where you are from?
The knife didn't break because there was anything wrong with it. The knife broke because the operator deliberately broke it

@joex , he means you did it on purpose, intentionally.....
And there's nothing wrong with that, we all clicked to see what it takes to break it.
