    Date: St. Patrick's Day 2022
    Location: Main Street, Flushing.
    At around 6am on Thursday passerby's called 911 to report smoke coming from a commercial building on Main Street. This commercial structure held many different smaller shops divided inside. Ladder 129 arrived on scene, quickly gave the 10-75, got their saws, and began to force entry. Engine 273 stretched a line and began extinguishing visible flames. The fire quickly made its way into the walls and voids spreading rapidly. A second alarm was transmitted by Battalion 52, Division 14 would transmit the 3rd and 4th. Multiple Tower Ladders were set up to douse the flames along with hand lines from adjoining roofs. The busy Flushing morning commute ground to a halt while the FDNY operation continued.

    Speaking as a retired Nurse, I wish that all Firefighters that are visibly in smoke conditions fighting the fire would where their protective masks. Lord knows what cancer causing agents are in these old buildings. It brings me to tears when I see older Firefighters suffering with cancer. It does happen even to those that don't expect it. It is an aweful disease that takes its toll not just on the person who has it but the entire family, including children. Great job by all these Firefighters, but remember to protect yourself so you can come home to your family. God Bless!!

    Aerialscope is the Cadillac of tower ladders. I'm proud to say they're 100% hand made in Wisconsin. And we here are proud that FDNY trusts them with their lives.

      Hahaha! Nothing is 100% made any one place. Seagrave is located in Clintonville so they are assembled in WI. But I agree the Aerialscope TL is a rock solid platform to work from. It's an old design but it works.

    The word in the street is that one of those stores that deliveries were charging those delivery electric scooters and one or more than ore caught on fire overnight. This means the FDNY was battling a chemical-electrical fire. Very difficult.

      I think they have teams from different areas that do specialized jobs depending on the Commanders' instructions. I assume they go in for specified time periods and stand by to relieve the team before them or their orders. For example at other fires I have seen they have men on roof-tops, and rescue teams, but I did not see any on the roofs of nearby buildings.

    One of the smokiest incidents I've watched. Smoke has killed more people than fire itself ever will. This video reminds me why I got out of FFing. It's mostly tedious as hell.

    Can anyone tell me the FDNY's SCBA policy? Is there even a requirement to actually WEAR a facemask? In 25 minutes of incredible video (and many others like it), I saw ZERO masks being worn although most of the FFs and even white helmet Chiefs were wearing a BA. Multiple times the aerial crews disappeared completely disappeared for extended periods of time into the thick smoke. Are the egos or tradition so strong that good men and women will haul around a BA but never use one? I do have to admit, I was encouraged when FF Pappaccio opened the valve on his tank @17:48 but who knows if he ever went on air. Probably not. These men and women (and all FFs) are brave FFs dedicated to saving life and property. I just wish they would protect their own by wearing the PPE they carry around on their backs!

    That building was the location of Wendy’s in the 1990’s, where five employees were murdered. After that incident Wendy’s closed that store. The perpetrators were former Wendy’s employees who robbed the store and tried to cover up the crime by killing the staff.

    Can they move the tower ladders from the top too or just the bottom?

    • @peteb9279
      @peteb9279 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can control them both from the bucket and the platform but some times the controls in the bucket lock out

  • @keithweathersbee1
    @keithweathersbee1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A question, at which point was the building a total loss? Oh, sorry, the answer was obvious. The exact moment FDNY arrived.
    With all the personnel present standing around, pushing uncharged hose around, trying too untangle them, they could, as a unit lifted the structure and placed it on empty land, then watch it burn. This would have caused little disruption to residents.

  • @k9tide

    Just an observation.. the guys in the tower ladders in the middle of the smoke with no SCBA…. Should be noted so in 10 years insurance claims and lawsuits can be denied /dismissed. Guess the tank o their back and the mask hanging off them is just for the cool factor….

    That's the building that WAS Wendy's where during a armed robbery at closing time in 2000, I believe 7 employees were shot execution style in back of head with 5 of them dying at that moment and 2 luckily survived! It's called the Wendy's massacre.
