The Family Structure is Falling apart in America.... Refreshing to see a Man ( of celebrity status, at least in my book ) Be such an Awesome Dad to his Son 💕👍
Here's a recap for everyone: 1) Too much stress inhibits muscle growth. Avoid things that make you overly stressed. 2) Self-sabotage: going overboard with cheat meals and snacking, using "I'm too busy" as an excuse when that usually isn't the case. 3) Having bad friends and negative influences. Surround yourself with good people who can help you prosper. 4) Becoming too routine with meals and training, to the point where you lose motivation. Incorporate some level of variance and don't be too afraid to occasionally try new things and experiment. Try to make things fun. 5) Replacing your nutrition and exercise with supplements. Supplements aren't a substitute for either, they are supposed to be an additional boost beyond what you can get just from food and exercise. 6) You're in a bad gym environment. Find a gym that motivates you and suits your training needs (not a Planet Fitness). 7) Ego. Don't believe that you know everything just because you have been around for a while, you never are close to knowing everything. Keep an open mind to new or unconventional ideas and constantly challenge your status quo.
I know John’s family could never read all the comments on all his videos, but just in case: I am 45 years old, and recently diagnosed as diabetic. I had never exercised or lifted weights in my life until a month ago. John’s videos have helped me so much, not just with form and the physical aspects, but also with the mental, like this video. I am so sorry for your loss. John is still a light in the world, and still helping people who need it, like me.
I will contrast this a little bit with the motivation I've had from following competition winning lifters. Just about everything I know came from watching good lifters do what they do, seeing someone else make the journey from training to top of the podium is hugely inspirational, you get to see the human side of actually working hard enough to win. Social Media in this case is an invaluable resource. As long as you keep the screen time "for business" I count that as a positive (especially if you don't have any local training partners).
"You have friends that suck"..bold of you to assume I have friends john...eat, sleep, train, eat, work, eat..gained 12lbs of solid muscle since I've implemented your advice and workouts..thanks man!
I have one good friend lol, I lift weights almost every day for 1-2 hours, on weekends about 3 hours. No rest days. On the days I don't lift weights, I do boxing at home and afterwards go to a martial arts gym to train Krav Maga with said friend. You know, I used to put all this time into gaming, now it's lifting. I also work in IT so it's really a necessity. But yeah, not having a lot of friends and thus barely getting asked to hang out, helps.

So many people ignore the mental/psychological side of bodybuilding and that's a shame. It's like you were speaking directly to me with this video. I'm seeing a professional to work through depression which I think is a big cause of my stress, self-sabotage, apathy, etc., plus my poor sleep and nutrition discipline. Thanks for all the no-BS info you give us and also for supporting your son's interests the way you do. You're a legend
ive weight lifted for 14 years and also got super into yoyoing!! that was such an awesome twist i love it! tell your boy to keep rocking it that was awesome
Best gains I made was when my diet was on point and I trained hard. The worst shape I was in was when my diet was off, and I did not train hard. It’s that simple. I was actually able to get near my best shape without PED’s when I took my training and diet a lot more seriously and I realised I did not need the PEDs anymore. The gains on PEDs made me lazy because the gains came a lot faster so I never appreciated the gains. Now that things are slower they are more satisfying to me. I’m not considering going down the road of PEDs anymore. Always thanks for the great video, they help a lot.
Good advice👍the most stress most of us have is working a job where the owners treat the workers like peasants and worrying about the bills . working out helps me with my stress and walking 2 miles out in the woods where i live .
I think the number 1 thing that kills gains is lack of sleep. If you don't sleep enough you'll make poor diet choices, you won't have the energy to work out and you won't recover well.
These are great points that make you take inventory of your training and personal habits. When I got back in the gym a year ago and changed my life I lost a few friends. They just didn't have the focus on health like I do so we are incompatible. My grandfather always told me you are the company you keep. Concerning the gym I can certainly relate to this one. I left my old "fitness" oriented gym which had the free weights and machines, poorly maintained, in the back of the building. Mainly a big box gym. I found a gym nearby that is owned by a former bodybuilding competitor with tons of equipment front and center. It's amazing how it changed my training and overall mentality. The atmosphere is motivating in itself. Besides they play old school rock and metal so I don't even use earbuds anymore. On another note... Awesome YoYo trick as usual !
John you shouldn’t rate your self knowledge so low, in my opinion its overwhelming and greatly received. Talking of which i changed my training style today and had the best pump in ages. Keep it fresh an keep body an mind healthy 👍
You ever notice how much he cares about people including his son I like watching these videos because I feel like I have a support system when working out. 3 cheers to a great man!
MASTER THE BASICS". WOW!!! In reference to your example regarding your friends, I live by this quote that I heard years back, "SHOW ME YOUR FRIENDS AND I'LL SHOW YOU YOUR FUTURE". John, such GREAT advice. THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for all of your videos. I'm 64, have prostate cancer and the 44 Radiation treatments slowed me down some. Then my wife died last Christmas. But you know what? Your videos, and vintage genetics, and CT Fletcher videos make me want to lift weights!! It's increasing my gains! Thanks John! I have a variety of dumbbells, and two car jack stands, I put a barbell on ,crawl underneath, lay on the floor and do close grip tricep exercises. No kidding.
Not even interested in bodybuilding , but absolutely love these videos. Not many people in fitness who are this level headed, and open minded but still discerning about what they put out.
I like to keep my diets simple. Same meals every day, just have to keep track of my calories while I prepare my plan and when I feel like it's time for a change, swop ingredients, have a cheat meal keeping the bases of my plan... Is still a cheat meal but ita kinda not at the same time ... Always love your content!! I try not to miss any new vids. Thanks for your knowledge!!!!
I respect this channel and learn a lot. It's good to see Someone focused on nutrition, facts, diet and exercise rather than running his mouth about other youtubers. Very humble and good quality. Thanks for your hard work making these videos for us.
#7 is lit af. And it’s correct. I’ve been reading Ego is the Enemy and that’s what always stand out to me. “Be a student. Remain a student” We can’t know everything. Always try to progress, experiment, read, listen. Don’t close your mind to all possibilities.
John is one of the few you tubers I actually sit through the entire video. Maybe I get bored easy or a bit ADD. But I ALWAYS hear what John has to say. There’s so much toxicity like how John talked about compare & despair. John is a breath of fresh air, he’s like my cool uncle from TH-cam 😂. Been working out since 2012, went from 140 -> 215 so I’ve had my share of TH-cam channels, forums and advice. But I really I really respect John. He knows his stuff and doesn’t BS to sell products.
dude i feel this could be the most important advice i could ever get from any other video out there w/ similar titles,to be honest,i started to learn and believe those advise and experience from the elders since i'm not even close to an expert or master!
Dude..I've never met you except through TH-cam but Sir, THANK YOU for your honest info and your authentic, genuine, way of relaying information. I feel like we are friends just by listening. Channels like yours are helping me down the lifting path (1st year noob gainer). Every time i think im tired in the gym i think about mountain dog on the belt squats making Juji almost tap and then go another set (props to him for toughing it out). Im already seeing great results. Also, That yo-yo trick was SO COOL Alexander! You made it look easy. Keep it coming! :)
I just really like your natural videos and when your son comes up I gave him 10 out of 10! Keep encourage him! Best wishes! Your contents are very professional! Great job! You are a decent man!
What I caught myself doing not too long ago, is quitting mid workout, because I didn't get as many reps of something as I thought I should have. Then I realized it's because Im quitting, that I didn't progress, I just kept questioning what's wrong. Key to that problem was sticking through the worse or weaker days, and doing everything as planned. NO QUIT.
Fantastic!! These could be applied to many things in life. Life Gains! One of my favorite ways to spend free time is learning. I love to read and about lots of different topics (by listening to others also). Fitness and health are incredibly fascinating to me, but so are many other topics. I’m just getting to know you but I’m so impressed with you (one of your videos I watched like 3 times to make sure I completely understood everything you said). I can tell you’re a good person and very genuine. Thank you!
I wasn’t quite sure of what I thought of you the first time I saw you. But you have really won me over with your down to earth attitude and the way you get your information across! It’s exactly the way i like it, take it if you want and if not what ever.
Gym environment is huge! When I walk into a gym I want to hear banging music and metal plates slamming together! Good places like that are rare anymore.
You make time for what you prioritize that's for dang sure!! Love that you mentioned the friends aspect- who we surround ourselves with GREATLY impacts our thoughts, actions, and choices.
Love that you're kid's yoyo tricks are included. That's wholesome man. Also great video! Stress is definitely my top enemy currently with school. I've got to learn to relax
I dont wish depression on anyone but since being diagnosed with manic depression and being put on medication my gains have gone through the roof! Awesome advice John! I am just sharing my own experience 👌
Number 3 is HUGE! There’s allot of people who will act like they are your friend when it’s convenient for them. But, when it comes to you training and bettering yourself, some of these people have a lingering resentment. It’s like it bothers them to see others bettering their lives. Be very aware of these people. They will drag you down when they can to make themselves feel better.
Daves World 100%. Worst is jealousy/envy. My friends know I try to be in shape and try to get me chugging beers. Too much calories. Then I get girlfriends and they talk trash about them while they’re sexless. Girls approach me then walk right into the conversation instantly lol. Made fun of me when I was broke now I have more money than them. Can see the hate/snide comments. And basically they’re all out of my life. Just sucks how many people are out there like you described. Makes me wanna move out of NJ.
Daniel Velkovski Sadly those types of people are everywhere my friend. Just as you mentioned it’s mainly jealousy that fuels them. They see someone who will in fact get the girls attention and instead of feeling proud of you they are intimidated by you. It’s good that you cut these people out of your life. Or at the very least keep somewhat of a distance between them.
I'm guilty of 1, 2 and 5. Having a job with such long long hours and having next to no free time that the only thing I can do other than work and train for an hour and thats it unless I wanna sleep less but we all know too little sleep hinders growth as well. That causes me to supplement too much due to lack of time to prepare proper meals. And that leads to self sabotaging. Ugh thx for reminding me how hard life is john :(. I do really enjoy my training though
i am a fan of you now...esp the last of 7 thinks was right on top. Thanks man....I am 54 and training bb 4 times a week.....still eager to learn and to improve. Keep on doing what you do big guy....
Most credible and honest bodybuilding channel John. Also you watch yourself beeing able to handle your fisique,by this i mean if your in a good relationship or marriage don't go use your fisique to attract other woman and end up in a divorce with all the stress and problems, finacial problems etc...this would really sabotage your passion for the sport and progress.
You can't tell someone something if they already know everything. So I don't try. These people are fun to watch though because you know there going to get it wrong 99% of the time.stupid can't be fixed.
I just realised why I made so many strength and size gains whilst I was off social media, I thought it was because I was focused only to realise now that it was because I wasn't stressed out about all the likes or lack off lol. Great content yet again Mr Meadows 🙌🏿
Hi John! I'm 25 now, and I've been working out for 12 years. I acknowledged and accepted by now, that I don't have the most appropriate genetics for bodybuilding, but I can still strive to being my best, which I'm gonna do. I've learned so many things from you regarding bodybuilding, and you've been one of my idols since I've discovered your channel. But now, what I'm really trying to achieve is not being the bodybuilder like you anymore. Rather being the balanced, knowledgeable, hard-working sportsman, who you are. Prioritize between the different areas of life properly and being as good of a dad one day like you. Somehow I just realized from your son's yoyo tricks cut into these videos, that bodybuilding per se doesn't lead anywhere, only the hard work and discipline it teaches you. Thanks John.

I think the number 1 thing that kills gains is lack of sleep. If you don't sleep enough you'll make poor diet choices, you won't have the energy to work out and you won't recover well.
When you finish watching a John Meadows video and another John Meadows video drops, heaven absolute heaven!
Awesome YoYo trick as usual !
he was right
The gym is a great release for stress. I find it really relaxed me when I'm tearing my muscle fibers down. It just makes me feel better.
The yo-yo trick with the best part of the whole video. Much love..
John you shouldn’t rate your self knowledge so low, in my opinion its overwhelming and greatly received. Talking of which i changed my training style today and had the best pump in ages. Keep it fresh an keep body an mind healthy 👍
As viewers we respect you sir. Best channel of all.
The best on TH-cam. He’s as honest as they come and isnt trying to cram some sales pitch down your throat.
RIP John. I always coming back to your videos.
Stress and sleep. Two things that people underestimate the impact on gains. Gym environment is huge. Another great video John!
Your words will remain as a gospel forever. Thank you John. So much.
I'm eternally grateful to this man. RIP Legend

GREAT VIDEO 👍🏽👍🏽
The most humble, no nonsense training advice out there. Thanks
#7 is lit af. And it’s correct. I’ve been reading Ego is the Enemy and that’s what always stand out to me. “Be a student. Remain a student”
We can’t know everything. Always try to progress, experiment, read, listen. Don’t close your mind to all possibilities.
I stopped using social media 2 years ago.... truly is a peaceful life.
Thanks brother. When I read a headline such as this presented by you, I am all ears.
Over stress is the ultimate killer. Everything seems to branch off that. Good video
dude i feel this could be the most important advice i could ever get from any other video out there w/ similar titles,to be honest,i started to learn and believe those advise and experience from the elders since i'm not even close to an expert or master!
welcome!
Thank you!
welcome!
Love that you mentioned the friends aspect- who we surround ourselves with GREATLY impacts our thoughts, actions, and choices.
you betcha - hope to see you at Arnold!
Love that you're kid's yoyo tricks are included. That's wholesome man. Also great video! Stress is definitely my top enemy currently with school. I've got to learn to relax
you got to respect this guys honesty. He tells you he owns a supplement company and gives you the truth about supplements. Integrity right there.
How in the world does this video get 22 thumbs down??? Awesome video John!!
:(
You slowly become those who you surround yourself with, great point John
Do you know what I like about this guy he literally loves everybody’s comments in the comment section
I read every single one - well I try to, sometimes I miss them, but not on purpose
Very wholesome environment, yes :)
I dont wish depression on anyone but since being diagnosed with manic depression and being put on medication my gains have gone through the roof! Awesome advice John! I am just sharing my own experience 👌
I hate that we're a medicate everything society, but antidepressants changed my life
Number 3 is HUGE!
Ego is the number one killer of gains and you just made me realize this
I'm guilty of 1, 2 and 5.
The biggest gain killer is NOT listening to John meadows ! This guy is pure quality and I enjoy these videos a lot .
I am not a bodybuilding fan at all but this John Meadows is a very knowledgeable and wise man.
thank you!
i am a fan of you now...esp the last of 7 thinks was right on top. Thanks man....I am 54 and training bb 4 times a week.....still eager to learn and to improve. Keep on doing what you do big guy....
thank you!
Relationships are the worst. Went through it for awhile, but pushed through.
This guy is awesome ... humble and wise.
No Bs, but this is the BEST advice I've ever heard. 😎 😎 😎 😎 So glad I've found your channel. None of my friends lift, but me.
This advice works for anything else we do in life not only for training. Nice video.
John Meadows destroys the Ego driven channels with his sharp well explained knowledge & wisdom !!! Keep it coming 💪
thank you!
Thanks John.
thank you!
Before I even clicked on this I said to myself, I bet number one is stress..and man does that hold so much truth to it
yep!
I tell people you never stop learning in the fitness world...like you mentioned...
Nice video
God I love these videos. John you are by far (and it's not even close) the best in the industry. The yoyo tricks are rad as well
John....You're a good dude. Keep helping us!! THANKS!!
I love that you put your son in this, awesome yoyo tricks there!
Stress and sleep are always the toughest for me. Loved the yo-yo trick!
