Thank you so much for the this valuable info that has helped me so much! I have just recently discovered that I don't recover well... I am now 55 year (started lifting again at 50) and have been mostly focusing on strength, heavy compound lifts, and I am an early bird lifter, starts at 5 AM. I have been doing intermittent fasting for a couple of years and I like it because i have moer control on my intake... My last meal have been at 6 PM and first around 10 AM, and have been training fasted just drinking water, and energy has been fine, but I have been so much injured lately, and I understand from your explanation that's because I am not feeding myself around the training time. Because so many are saying that meal timing doesn't matter , I just kept going. It wasn't until last week I watched one of your videos where you talked about this as well, so I started to test this out, only by adding the EAA's during my session, and my first meal within an hour after, just over a week I have done this I feel the difference! I probably should feed myself before as well, but it's hard to eat 430 am.. Any suggestion on that would be great! Again thank you so much!!!
Svein Håland thats good to hear man....it works wonders doesnt it. I usually have a kale,banana and blueberry smoothie in the morning but decided to use drink it as my Intra workout and it worked wonders for me. Good on keep going.
Hey john, even tho i'm natty but i like to train with volume, i loke to hit the muscle from diffrent angle, i love jay cutler and this is why i like to train exactely like him, i listen to all his advises (including yours) with this i hit every muscle group twice a week For EX; if i do 30 sets total for chest on saturday, i hit again on wednesday with 10 sets just to fill with a blood and stimulate MPS And this going with every single muscle group And to mention i use periodezation (deload week) every 2 weeks both volume/intensity for about 50% So what do u think of my training style???

John, thank you so much for addressing the idea of fatigue. I live with chronic illnesses and chronic fatigue. I also have been working out and lifting on and off, given health over the years. My personal experience definitely agrees with everything you're saying here. I can't do crazy rep/sets with the light weight because my body starting giving out quicker without the benefits. I've had to experiment a lot with balancing the rep/set volume and loading on heavier weights in order to get the body response I need in order to boost metabolism and rebulid muscle. Dealing with a lot of endocrine issues and orthostatic problems, it's a challenge, but not impossible. Thank you for this.

Recently I was 3 days away from gym. I got a mental burnout. I had an excel sheet about how much I drink water, I was constantly watching TH-cam videos about training and diet. I counted my calories all the time and weighted food to be precise on 1 gram. I counted my rest at gym to be perfectly 30 seconds meaning that I get ready before that and start the set exactly when 30 seconds have passed. I began to worry about my cortisol level and testosterone and estrogen. I began to be unsure if I'm lazy or am I starting to push too hard. Then I just hit the wall. One morning it was so difficult to get up from bed, wash teeth, go to shower, wash dishes, boil eggs, drink water, take creatine and protein, make food, eat how I was supposed to eat. I visited shop to buy some food and I was staring at the stuff there and I felt like crying. I wanted something good to eat, but I knew that I would regret it later. I had set myself rules and I felt like I was in a prison. Then I became too hungry and ordered a pizza. It was delicious! I was worrying too much about everything and it exhausted me to the point that for 3 days I was unable to go to the gym. I thought that ok, that's it. Now my motivation ended... Today I went back to the gym. From now on I still have rules for myself and I even added a new rule: Don't stress! I learned that failing is ok... (insert Arnold Schwarzennegger Speech That Broke The Internet) So today I won't be watching this video, because watching TH-cam videos gives me stress because I feel like I'm doing everything wrong. I like this channel and you explain all the things in detail. Hands down one of the best channels in TH-cam. I'll be watching your videos again when I'm able to stress less. I'm sure you've made many good videos since that.

Maybe work muscles doing supersets on antagonist muscle so you get to work on the "rest time" but it doesn't get you so tired/fried when you work other muscles. And maybe pair smaller muscles with bigger ones. Like chest and biceps etc. And maybe consider doing low volume. Just use 1-2 movements per musclegroup per session. Late bedtimes suck when working long hours and there's nothing to do about it but those are my tips for the training sessions. Hope you get something out of it :)
skip some workouts and get more sleep. i do construction work so i have to manage fatigue. Workout, upper lower split> start of the week heavy compounts(short workouts), end of the week high reps(takes more time) but now i can recover in the weekend.
@@miraklingthep3907 7 to 8. If i get less or if to tired i skip the next workout. Its all about the recovery for me. If I neglect that I will break down my body and wasting my time in the gym.

I had an amazing 4 day Pull/Push split this week. Woke up this morning feeling wrecked which bummed me out because I wanted to go hard today and tomorrow to round out the week. Got up, had a walk to my donut shop and had a couple kolaches fresh outta the oven, hot as can be... walked home. Dropped a King Kong and had a warm shower. Feel better and feel like I could go have a session, but I’m listening to my body and taking the day off even though I still wanna go move some iron. 😏 As a natty I can’t go hard all the time, every single day... reality is a bitch sometimes.
throwing in aero-only days is a solution that works good for me, when I feel lifting isn't for my body on a given day. 2 machines , 20mins each, high intensity. On a day I feel too wrecked to hit the gym at all, I do a couple of sets of stretching, it takes 15-20 mins total. But doing nothing is also a solution, then next day you have no excuses at all .
1- fatigue - peripheral and central - must load and exhaust 2:48 - when its concerning the fatigue - when the reps are just falling down each week what cause cns fatigue- its not just compound movemetns - excessive volumns[ expirienced - like 24 30 40 sets for biceps too much ] even high reps -can take to failure but burns too bad- to much aerobic demand 3- rest - enough- between sets important- very short is bad - eg concentration curls not much vs squats -common sets 8:35 -9 25 - important - 4 sets sq and 6 sets accesory less demanding than 10 sets of sqs 4- sleep- dont sleep too late - 7-8 is good 5- nutriton - important ofcourse 14:11- the science 14:28 - experiment ps prior to session carbs or even during - 100 percent - fast digestion foods 6- stess - is it gonna matter in 6 months - not all a big deal - exceptions like job loss not protein grams per day or ig likes 7- laugh - happiness - like arnold - would look forward to his session in his gym coz closer - other guys were pissed he was smiling

Its crazy when you said about laghing during the workout, I contantly break a smile or laugh just by myself, all because of the joy of lifting weights! I've noticed on heavier sets that if I smile or laugh it sometimes makes me stronger... Just try it by yourselves!
I get stressed when someone tells me not to stress! However, I laugh a lot so I guess it will even out! 😄 I am working out with two other funny fellows and I guarantee it helps tons! It really does, try it👍🤗
When I do a lot of high rep/volume to failure it's just slowly wearing me down week by week - I do much better in the 5-10 rep range with really high intensity:)
Eric approach makes sense, if you can spread the volume of a x2 frequency split on more day and recover, go on. I still stand with John and with his view on the video "how hard you should train", but if Eric's approach works for you, go on.

Been to a few of those laughing classes when I was younger. Our instructor would ask us to raise our hands over our heads and laugh as hard as possible. Feels forced and stupid at first but when you notice your neighbors laughing like they're batshit crazy, you'll end up laughing for real. Good times!
I’ve never laughed in the middle of a set but I can say that when you find that sweet spot and the contractions are spot on it does smear a grinch grin across my face. I did bad mouth a kettle ball one time in a low volume and with no one around. My form was crap and I became impatient and said things I won’t repeat on here after I made the adjustment to correct. This video was excellent. Very important information.

Hi, is it normal for my quads to recover faster than my hamstrings with less DOMS? When I train legs, I do squats and leg extensions for quads and RDLs and lying hamstring curls for hamstrings. My quads also get some activation from the walking lunges I do. I take all my exercises to near failure if not failure. My quads are never really sore but hamstrings are...
Get a muscle roller. Just got one myself and pretty incredible results for quads. Excited to see what it does for hams, they always take the longest to recover for me
I’m the same, Hamstrings are always sore even if I do half the sets. I guess it’s because for most ‘quad’ exercises you’re still using your hamstring to some extent believe it or not. Vs for hamstring exercise, you barely use any of your quad muscles at all.

John could you make a video on what you think is the best way to recover or fix when you already went past your limit of central nervous system fatigue. I think a lot of guys get to the point where they kind of became obsessed with training and didn't rest then don't know how to pull back. Me being one of them.

Hi John. I have noticed when I have a 4-5day break from training I seem to grow really well in that time, like a growth spurt so too speak. I thought I was imagining it but it has happened 3 times noticeably in the last 2 years of training (that's all the breaks I have had) I train similar to you and am enhanced, have done bro splits and am now on push-pull so I train 3 muscles in one go, I do a minimum of 30 sets per workout (except legs lol) and go to failure on about 50% of sets and near failure on the other 50%. Is there some sort of explanation for this? Next vid perhaps?
This video is one of the best video on youtube! I have multiple sclerosis, muscle recovery is ok but cns recovery is very slow even with steroids. I need to rest at minimum 2 minutes between sets, otherwise in the second set my reps drop a lot. I use low volume and medium reps (5-8 sets for each bodypart and 5-10 reps) and I my schedule is 1 day on 2 days off (push/pull/legs). Overtraining is a real thing especially in over 40 and especially in a non healthy people. But certainly there are some people with good genetic and good recovery capacity. Again, amazing video John!
Do NOT laugh during a hard set whatever u do...I did while lifting as a friend farted and I lost all my strength. It was funny and terrifying at the same time 😂
I used to worry too much about this stuff at the end of the day do what your body is comfortable with if you’re overworking your body will let you know

Long work hours with late bedtimes, short rest periods due to time constraints on workout time, basically I'm screwed 😭
Maybe work muscles doing supersets on antagonist muscle so you get to work on the "rest time" but it doesn't get you so tired/fried when you work other muscles. And maybe pair smaller muscles with bigger ones. Like chest and biceps etc. And maybe consider doing low volume. Just use 1-2 movements per musclegroup per session. Late bedtimes suck when working long hours and there's nothing to do about it but those are my tips for the training sessions. Hope you get something out of it :)
And forgot to mention... Use high intensity. Maybe go to failure more when doing low volume so u get the best bang for ur buck.
skip some workouts and get more sleep. i do construction work so i have to manage fatigue. Workout, upper lower split> start of the week heavy compounts(short workouts), end of the week high reps(takes more time) but now i can recover in the weekend.
tonymaltinie same here mate I hardly manage to get 7hrs of sleep, how many hrs of sleep you are getting maye .
@@miraklingthep3907 7 to 8. If i get less or if to tired i skip the next workout. Its all about the recovery for me. If I neglect that I will break down my body and wasting my time in the gym.

I had an amazing 4 day Pull/Push split this week. Woke up this morning feeling wrecked which bummed me out because I wanted to go hard today and tomorrow to round out the week.
Got up, had a walk to my donut shop and had a couple kolaches fresh outta the oven, hot as can be... walked home. Dropped a King Kong and had a warm shower. Feel better and feel like I could go have a session, but I’m listening to my body and taking the day off even though I still wanna go move some iron. 😏
As a natty I can’t go hard all the time, every single day... reality is a bitch sometimes.
throwing in aero-only days is a solution that works good for me, when I feel lifting isn't for my body on a given day. 2 machines , 20mins each, high intensity. On a day I feel too wrecked to hit the gym at all, I do a couple of sets of stretching, it takes 15-20 mins total. But doing nothing is also a solution, then next day you have no excuses at all .
1- fatigue - peripheral and central - must load and exhaust
2:48 - when its concerning the fatigue - when the reps are just falling down each week
what cause cns fatigue- its not just compound movemetns - excessive volumns[ expirienced - like 24 30 40 sets for biceps too much ]
even high reps -can take to failure but burns too bad- to much aerobic demand
3- rest - enough- between sets important- very short is bad - eg concentration curls not much vs squats -common sets
8:35 -9 25 - important - 4 sets sq and 6 sets accesory less demanding than 10 sets of sqs
4- sleep- dont sleep too late - 7-8 is good
5- nutriton - important ofcourse 14:11- the science 14:28 - experiment
ps prior to session carbs or even during - 100 percent - fast digestion foods
6- stess - is it gonna matter in 6 months - not all a big deal - exceptions like job loss not protein grams per day or ig likes
7- laugh - happiness - like arnold - would look forward to his session in his gym coz closer - other guys were pissed he was smiling

Its crazy when you said about laghing during the workout, I contantly break a smile or laugh just by myself, all because of the joy of lifting weights! I've noticed on heavier sets that if I smile or laugh it sometimes makes me stronger... Just try it by yourselves!
I get stressed when someone tells me not to stress! However, I laugh a lot so I guess it will even out! 😄 I am working out with two other funny fellows and I guarantee it helps tons! It really does, try it👍🤗

When I do a lot of high rep/volume to failure it's just slowly wearing me down week by week - I do much better in the 5-10 rep range with really high intensity:)

Eric approach makes sense, if you can spread the volume of a x2 frequency split on more day and recover, go on. I still stand with John and with his view on the video "how hard you should train", but if Eric's approach works for you, go on.

Been to a few of those laughing classes when I was younger.
Our instructor would ask us to raise our hands over our heads and laugh as hard as possible. Feels forced and stupid at first but when you notice your neighbors laughing like they're batshit crazy, you'll end up laughing for real. Good times!
I’ve never laughed in the middle of a set but I can say that when you find that sweet spot and the contractions are spot on it does smear a grinch grin across my face. I did bad mouth a kettle ball one time in a low volume and with no one around. My form was crap and I became impatient and said things I won’t repeat on here after I made the adjustment to correct. This video was excellent. Very important information.

Hi, is it normal for my quads to recover faster than my hamstrings with less DOMS? When I train legs, I do squats and leg extensions for quads and RDLs and lying hamstring curls for hamstrings. My quads also get some activation from the walking lunges I do. I take all my exercises to near failure if not failure. My quads are never really sore but hamstrings are...
the RDL stretch is why your hams are so sore..that's ok! keep cranking!

I’m the same, Hamstrings are always sore even if I do half the sets. I guess it’s because for most ‘quad’ exercises you’re still using your hamstring to some extent believe it or not. Vs for hamstring exercise, you barely use any of your quad muscles at all.

Honestly I love absolutely every video of yours. You explain everything so in depth. John could you make a video on what you think is the best way to recover or fix when you already went past your limit of central nervous system fatigue. I think a lot of guys get to the point where they kind of became obsessed with training and didn't rest then don't know how to pull back. Me being one of them.

Hi John. I have noticed when I have a 4-5day break from training I seem to grow really well in that time, like a growth spurt so too speak. I thought I was imagining it but it has happened 3 times noticeably in the last 2 years of training (that's all the breaks I have had) I train similar to you and am enhanced, have done bro splits and am now on push-pull so I train 3 muscles in one go, I do a minimum of 30 sets per workout (except legs lol) and go to failure on about 50% of sets and near failure on the other 50%. Is there some sort of explanation for this? Next vid perhaps?

This video is one of the best video on youtube! I have multiple sclerosis, muscle recovery is ok but cns recovery is very slow even with steroids. I need to rest at minimum 2 minutes between sets, otherwise in the second set my reps drop a lot. I use low volume and medium reps (5-8 sets for each bodypart and 5-10 reps) and I my schedule is 1 day on 2 days off (push/pull/legs). Overtraining is a real thing especially in over 40 and especially in a non healthy people. But certainly there are some people with good genetic and good recovery capacity. Again, amazing video John!
Do NOT laugh during a hard set whatever u do...I did while lifting as a friend farted and I lost all my strength. It was funny and terrifying at the same time 😂

What is the max ceiling for reps before impacting recovery? Ive heard 15-20 sets per week, Ive also heard 40s/set, but what about in terms of reps?
i have never seen any studies on reps...it would depend greatly on the intensity of the reps too
I used to worry too much about this stuff at the end of the day do what your body is comfortable with if you’re overworking your body will let you know
