the point of musicals is to show the emotional side of music. When people(the characters) can no longer express their feelings and emotions through just words and sentences...they start to sing or perform. That perspective really helped me enjoy at least THIS musical more than I thought I would as I'm also not a musical kinda guy.
There should be a musical where you make this comment while I laugh my gritz off of commenting on charlie who dont like musical so the people make a musical of the guy who don't like musical.

He’s not wrong tho. I wish people would accept that musicals aren’t for everyone and if you don’t like musicals you probs aren’t going to like this movie, especially since it’s 2 hours and 40 minutes long. Does that it’s a bad movie or will flop? No. It’ll easily clean house at the box office. I just wish people would stop freaking out whenever they here someone doesn’t like a musical or think that somehow this one will suddenly “convert” them to liking musicals
@@Lawrence_TalbotI DO think a lot of people generally understand and accept that musicals aren’t for everyone but I think it’s just our human nature to be a little startled or confused when we find a lot of pros in something we like very much and then there’s someone who doesn’t feel the same way and we’re like “How could you not like it?!” “It was great!” “It was so well done!” “WHAT?! What do you mean you don’t like so and so.” “You have no taste!” Etc etc. Especially when it’s a large amount of people who share the same sentiment and a few others don’t.
I think I see his confusion, and also why he thinks a new song happens every 3 seconds and why some of them are "nothing songs." Dancing through life is one giant 20-minute song with speaking sections interspersed throughout, but I think he might be seeing every break to speak as the introduction of a new song. No wonder he finds it exhausting lol.
@@tysonbrown9437 Actually, i find that people dont like a LOT of things because they dont actually understand them or their purpose. There is a lot of your perception that can be impacted by your understanding of something.
@@TheArtisticGamer7some people just don't like that much singing in a movie. There are other things to enjoy besides musicals. It's not a farfetched concept that not everyone loves music theatre

I'm a fan of the Broadway production, so I was worried. Ooh boy, was I wrong. It was beyond satisfying. So well made; you can feel the passion on the screen. So great!
I was also worried but everything was perfect and better than I expected, the set, the costumes, the actors, the performances, the way its directed, everything was made with love and respect for the Broadway musical, it's a musical made by a musical theatre fan, I swear when idina and Kristin appeared I screamed and felt so seen, you can feel the passion in every take
The only thing i dont like is the horrendous staging and composition of that gravity scene at the end. The cgi completely broke the immersion for me, like the original wizard of oz somehow made the flying witch a lot more fun to watch in my opinion. That being said, i think it was a really fun film and the universe its building is really interesting.
@@leaderchannel3919It’s technically both. Twisted is to Aladdin, as Wicked is to Wizard of Oz. They even reference the wicked book in the book shop and jafar sings the melody of The Wizard And I at one point

Well, this is an interesting review. I work collecting surveys to see how movies are received in the most common complaint we’ve heard at our location is that wicked isn’t enough of a musical. In fact, from the usual music crowd their only complaint was that there wasn’t enough music. Second most common complaint is that they hid the fact it’s a part one from their advertising.
I legit found out that the movie is only half of the rest when i saw "part 1" in the opening lmao but i'm going through my obsessed-with-the-movie-i-just-saw phase and saw articles from several months ago saying that it's gonna be a 2-parter
Thank you for saving me a watch. I was gonna see it when it hit streaming but now I'll just wait until the second half hits streaming. How are they gonna split it into 2 films?? Whack
@@rkatthere was no one they could put 2 parts in one movie even without being really long or without it feeling kinda rushed. And actually part 1 ends in a satisfying place where it doesn’t make me angry that there isn’t two parts already out.
@@LovelyPromis3That's because this part of the story ends where Act One of the show concludes, right before Intermission. That's typical of how they are constructed.
For him to say that when one song ends another begins just makes me think of the musicals I've seen that are actually sung all the way through. First to hit my mind is Hamilton and Les Miserables to a degree. Can't think of any other right now.
I grew up with Wicked and I bought the tickets with my husband in tow. He knew NOTHING…and that made me so happy. I was even happier knowing he enjoyed it afterwards. He said he believed in musical movies again (just a little bit) from this. The only downside is now he doesn’t want me to spoil Act II until the second movie comes out next year.
I’m glad that worked out. My girlfriend took me and I needed to take a small walk in the middle to keep me awake. I acknowledge it’s a good movie, but it’s not my type of movie lol
As a fan of Wicked and knowing you are not a musical kind of guy, you actually gave a pretty solid review. I always have a bias and usually watch reviews with biases in them. However, you went in just blind and still found a sense of enjoyment out of it. I definitely see your reasonings of why some things dont need to be sung. But again, thats just on you not being a musical person. I give you full respect for not liking musicals and yet still doing it.
Yep and Boq (who is in love with Glinda (who the actor is actually the real life boyfriend of Ariana)) turns into the tin man, as he doesn’t have a heart.
I like how he talks about “Dancing through life” saying how he doesn’t like to think….yeah that’s going to be super important in Part 2 on why he doesn’t THINK 😭
As a theatre fan, but not an avid Wicked fan, many Broadway mega fans are huge on musicals like Les Miserables, or Phantom of the Opera. those two musicals are the goats in Broadway world, and they are ENTIRELY MUSIC. hardly any spoken words in them. So yeah, being overstuffed with music is definitely a huge plus for big Broadway fans
Eh, depends Les Mis and Phantom are as big as they are because they are spectacles on their own. Every song tells a story and has slower bits to keep telling the story. But if you ever liked Family Guy or American Dad, you like musicals
@@nanvolentine9110 Nah, Phantom is literally the staple of musicals. Same with Les Mis. Basically any musical you've seen has either been inspired by the writing of Phantom and Les Mis or by watching them. If you want awful, you should look at Doctor Zhivago. Even Footloose, which at the time was considered groundbreaking, just is mediocre at best. The songs are mediocre, the story is literally a dad and his goons refusing to let people dance, because his son died in a carcrash. And the dad is the only one who is needed to change his minds and suddenly his goons who were also super against dancing are suddenly glad he changed his mind. If you dont like Phantom or Les Mis, then odds are more likely that you want the storytelling to happen more like Kinky Boots, where most of the story is told in spoken word before "amplified" with song rather than have the story progress during the song.
@@Predated2I think they meant the movie versions of the plays. Modern musicals really can’t do what the past ones did. Like Mary Poppins, West Side Story, the Sound of Music - no modern musical holds a candle to them. The remake of west side story, for example
@@Predated2 I agree, Doctor Zhivago is awful, Footloose could only be suffered through once, but Kinky Boots? Oh, dear God, no! Add Flashdance, too. Give me the old musicals, for the most part. And the last Disney move I actually liked is Enchanted, I'll watch that one any chance I get!

Charlie using the "We don't want to think" (Dancing through life) musical number as an example of something that seems unnecessary is especially hilarious when you know what happens in part 2 of Wicked LOL
Also, it's not just a song characterizing the prince but the song serves a purpose in highlighting the way the students (and really how most people) can be persuaded to just...be willfully ignorant? The students do not care about the obviously unjust, weird things going on at the school. Like only Elphaba seems to give a shit and everyone else seems content to live in ignorant bliss and be like "eh well its not my problem, everything's fine, the wizard will sort stuff out".
my sister and I literally had en entire conversation after the movie about how we're glad that numbers such as "dancing through life" weren't cut even though they're not as integral to the story as, say, "loathing", and instead decided on doing two parts lol
also laughed at him saying it’s a “five minute number” when it’s the longest number in the show (about 10-12 minutes including dance numbers and dialogue that’s not on the soundtrack) and even LONGER in the movie

Bro it’s not that hard a lot of people like substance over singing and Ik the rebuttals is that there’s meaning in singing but just like Charlie is saying not everything had to be sung
For me, it's like horror games and jumpscares, if done sparringly it can be great, it's fine (as long as it's not too long), too much and my immersion is broken, and it'd start to feel like how it feels to try listening to that "toxic gossip train" bs.
I like musicals, but not in a movie format. I really dislike that. I think if you take your boyfriend to experience the "real" thing (which is usually really expensive though), he may see things differently. Although, he may still not like them in a movie theater, like me.
@@mikeyshoe6627 no I don’t mind people not liking them and I realize everyone has their reasons! I just think it’s funny how people react to musicals, either really excited or really hating it lmao
As a longtime theatre fan, this was probably my most anticipated movie of the year. I’ve always wanted to see the stage show but sadly haven’t ever been able to do so. I was a tad worried that the movie wouldn’t feel as magical as seeing it performed live would feel, but knew I’d still enjoy it regardless. Glad to say that, despite my worries, it absolutely met my expectations! The casting was perfect. I don’t know if I’d go as far as to say Cynthia Erivo should get an Oscar for her performance as Elphaba, but she 100% owned this role. I literally could never imagine anyone else fitting as well as her after seeing this. She perfectly captures Elphaba with just a look: A woman who goes against everything but also never really had the chance to be part of it in the first place. You can see her cold demeanor break down and literally warm up to Glinda as their friendship blooms, which adds so much extra tragedy when she ends up having to rebel and become the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’. That’s not even to mention her voice. Her vocal performance throughout the movie was enough to rival Idina Menzel’s iconic performance back in the Broadway days. Just an absolute powerhouse of a voice. And that’s just her! Ariana Grande gives a great performance as Glinda, doing a great job of matching the ‘rich snobby girl’ with the ‘Good witch’ she will later become. This show is extremely reliant on that relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, so I am happy to report they manage to sell the chemistry. I genuinely felt myself shedding manly tears when Glinda finally let go of her pride and helped Elphaba with her dance. These two had a solid chemistry that truly is the heart and soul of the story. Casting in general was excellent. Every single actor felt natural in their respective roles. Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard is a casting choice sent from the gods and he perfectly captures that ‘charming snake oil salesman’ vibe that he needs to have. Michelle Yeoh definitely managed to steal the spotlight from his as Morrible. Having never actually seen the musical, I had no idea that she would become an antagonist. Michelle did such a perfect job playing into this in a way where I truly did not see it coming. Yet, it didn’t feel like she was playing two completely different characters when she showed her true nature. I could 100% believe both sides of Morrible as a supportive mentor and an active hand in Oz’s oppression. So special shout-out to her for managing to capture that The sets were wonderful. Oz as a location has the potential to be whatever, so it’s nice to see the filmmakers try to get creative with how a magical land like Oz may operate outside of just the places we’d seen previously through Dorothy’s eyes. Shiz really does capture the vibe of a magic school without feeling like it lacks its own identity. The Emerald City manages to feel like its own magical depiction without just straight copying from the original film. And, the one thing I am thankful to report, it did NOT feel soulless. I was so expecting some generic green screen CGI backgrounds that wouldn’t capture the warmth and whimsy of Oz, but they did a great job making the locales feel real and lived in regardless of the methods they used to create it. The message sadly hits a tad too close to home. I think this is a musical that will never really be irrelevant with its message about othering people and the dangers of unity through bigotry. The main conflict comes ahead when the animals of Oz that were once given the same rights as people are forced to conform to becoming not even citizens. We see this most with the goat professor Dillamond, whom is forced to resign from the school due to his not being human. The scene in class where he sees the cruel message left for him on the chalkboard was handled quite well. Despite being a goat, Peter Dinklage’s vocal performance managed to so well capture the pain and fear within him. I know damn well I’ll be bawling when act 2 comes out and we discover his fate after such a great job bringing the character to life with only a few short scenes. This musical really could not have come out at a better time, for better or worse. And, of course, this conflict leads to Elphaba being similarly marked as a target to Oz after she defies the Wizard. While we’ve yet to see the full extent of this due to it only being part 1, we still see it with the opening number of ‘Nobody Mourns the Wicked’. Watching the munchkins’ reaction to the news of the witch’s ‘death’ is played perfectly. What is a celebratory number for themselves is, in actuality, a horrifyingly tragic cult-like song for those of us who know the truth. Even sadder still seeing Glinda forced to play the role of ‘relief’ despite her clear reservations having to pin her closest friend as the villain even in death. Them burning the large statue of Elphaba was a great touch as well, truly showing how bad their hatred of the witch had gotten. I’d say that the opening number does a great job of engaging the audience into this tale. From the opening shot of the witch’s hat as she lays ‘melted’, to the flying monkeys’ flight throughout Oz (with a cameo from Dorothy’s crew on the yellow brick road), to the shots of all the wicked witch propaganda in Munchinkland it just gives off this epic and climactic atmosphere. The movie really does take advantage of it being a film version of an already iconic musical and origin of an also iconic film. There’s definitely a lot of ‘legacy shots’ and references to the original story, but it is well earned here. Wicked feels like the literal best case scenario for these types of movies like ‘Ghostbusters Afterlife’ or ‘Lightyear’ or any of these other films trying to base off nostalgia. Whereas those films struggle to earn anything more than an ‘I know what that is’ response throughout, Wicked manages to recontextualize its predecessor in clever ways. From Elphaba’s green skin to the yellow brick road to the silver slippers to even her hat. Basically everything gets explained in this story, yet it doesn’t ever come across as just ruining the magic. Somehow it just works here. ‘Defying Gravity’. I wanted to save my thoughts on this number for last. If nothing else, the movie deserves to exist for its rendition of Defying Gravity. Being the Act 1 closer AND easily most recognized song in the musical AND being the final song of the film, there was nothing short of humongous stakes and expectations for it. I’m glad to say they completely sold this song and forced an ugly cry from me. The cinematic sequence of Elphaba flying on her broom for the first time mixed with Cynthia Erivo’s powerhouse of a voice is impossible to resist. I don’t think it’s even possible to watch this scene without getting chills. I wish I could put it into words properly, but I really don’t think I can properly make anyone feel the magic of this scene myself. It’s just… perfect. Absolutely perfect. Even listening to the song now still elicits a strong response from me. 9/10. I still hesitate to call it a perfect film, but I really couldn’t discuss anything that genuinely bothered me about the movie. I guess some songs weren’t my favorites and i would have loved to just see part 2 already, but that’s the worst I think I can personally say. If you’re a fan of musicals, see this NOW. Legit may be my personal film of the year, although I’d have to review everything I’ve seen this year to decide that.
i get all your criticisms about the musical numbers stem from an overall distaste for musicals, but i feel like saying a lot of the characters’ emotions are sung at you instead of being sub-textually integrated into the plot, is pretty much just describing what a musical is. that’s not an actual critique of the film because if anything it’s what it was supposed to do. on top of that, there really wasn’t that much more singing than there would be in a standard musical. it’s half of the entire show so only half the songs are included (everything in act 1), maybe you felt it more because of how you feel towards the genre, but i think it was a lot less frequent than u let on. there also aren’t any of these “nothing” songs you mentioned, like that’s just blatantly untrue. every song in the film either establishes motivations, introduces a concept or character, develops the world or directly progresses the story. again, i get why all of this was said, and i’m not even some wicked fanboy running to defend my sacred cow, i just think it’s incredibly disingenuous of you to misrepresent the movie and give a false perception of what it actually is just because of your own personal biases
Spoiler Alert! Fiyero (the brainless jock bro you were singing about) literally is the Scarecrow-yep, Mr. “If I Only Had a Brain”-and that’s 100% intentional. The whole story is built on the idea of not taking things at face value - especially the sudden songs, and the way they connect everything in this world is wild. There are so many Easter eggs that tie back to this theme, and by the end of Part 1, you’ve actually met everyone except Dorothy without even realizing it. I usually hate musicals, but Wicked is the one I actually love. Why? Because every single lyric has a backstory. Every line has meaning. It’s not just a bunch of random songs-it’s all connected, and it’s honestly genius. If you’re not catching the layers, you’re missing the best part.
Right, i feel like wicked actually has solid songs that convey either references to future events or tie into a theme/character moment. I be fucking it up during Dancing through life everytime 🤣 but I can see for him how it can seem like they sing a lot and be annoying bc all the songs are pretty long (all positives for me, i freaking love musicals) and have the talking parts in the middle, which if you were to think the song is over cause theyre talking and then they just get started on verse 3 I can see the irritation 💀
As someone who also despises musicals, I think the point Charlie was making wasn't that the songs don't have a point - it's that the message many of the songs have can still be conveyed through basic verbal/non-verbal dialogue. A movie doesn't have to break into song every 5 minutes to tell you the same story
It’s a good point. I don’t love musicals but I did see Wicked live circa 2016 or something and thought it was a fun experience. If it were just put directly on film without enough actual cinema aspects it would get annoying quickly
0:01 the intro. lol. This is how you feel just before you let someone know that you love watching the movie Wicked. I absolutely loved it. By the end of this movie, I’m looking at it like it’s some type of MCU level Avengers movie. I was literally wanting an after credit scene. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie that makes you feel this enveloped in the world. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a Movie that have done this to this to this degree.
Dancing Through Life was always one of my fav ensemble songs, I’d love to hear Charlie’s full version of “We Don’t Like To Think” now tho😂 this video is so funny to me
I don’t like musicals either but the actors performances were so good and I also found out Ariana and Cynthia were actually singing live like the whole time which is crazy. I think what I realized is that a big draw to musicals is just the spectacle of people singing, dancing, and acting live. It’s hard to capture that spectacle in movie form hence why I would guess most movie musicals suck(the music is usually just bad too though), but this one seems to get it right. Also some people just aren’t impressed by that spectacle and only care about the story which I get and maybe you’ll never like a musical in that case
SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO DIDNT SEE THE MOVIE. That “being brainless” song is really on par with the wizard of oz. I wonder what character this guy turns into… I probably would figure it out if I only had a brain 🤷♂️

I saw them both, and they were awful! They just don't make 'em like they used to.
The remake of west side story, for example

fake news
So special shout-out to her for managing to capture that
The sets were wonderful.
Not all art is for everyone. Thank you for your honest take. glad you still gave the movie a chance

i get all your criticisms about the musical numbers stem from an overall distaste for musicals, but i feel like saying a lot of the characters’ emotions are sung at you instead of being sub-textually integrated into the plot, is pretty much just describing what a musical is. that’s not an actual critique of the film because if anything it’s what it was supposed to do. on top of that, there really wasn’t that much more singing than there would be in a standard musical. it’s half of the entire show so only half the songs are included (everything in act 1), maybe you felt it more because of how you feel towards the genre, but i think it was a lot less frequent than u let on. there also aren’t any of these “nothing” songs you mentioned, like that’s just blatantly untrue. every song in the film either establishes motivations, introduces a concept or character, develops the world or directly progresses the story. again, i get why all of this was said, and i’m not even some wicked fanboy running to defend my sacred cow, i just think it’s incredibly disingenuous of you to misrepresent the movie and give a false perception of what it actually is just because of your own personal biases

SOLID
Came here to say all of this!
I've already been spoiled but put some new paragraphs after "spoiler warning" so people can actually avoid it
As someone who also despises musicals, I think the point Charlie was making wasn't that the songs don't have a point - it's that the message many of the songs have can still be conveyed through basic verbal/non-verbal dialogue. A movie doesn't have to break into song every 5 minutes to tell you the same story
5:01 wait till he finds out that's the scarecrow from wizard of Oz
He still won't care
Yeah, he still won’t care! BUT STILL! HE SHOULD!
rip to anyone who hasnt read the book/isnt familiar with the play

It’s a good point. I don’t love musicals but I did see Wicked live circa 2016 or something and thought it was a fun experience. If it were just put directly on film without enough actual cinema aspects it would get annoying quickly
now you gotta watch “the guy who didn’t like musical”, which is a musical about a guy who didnt like musical
Just for irony sake, Charlie should watch "The guy who didn't like musicals."
3:53 THIS IS SO ACCURATE ☠️
hey i did love wicked though 🩷💚
Used to love your videos omg
I had no idea you were posting again ?? Bettt
Dancing Through Life was always one of my fav ensemble songs, I’d love to hear Charlie’s full version of “We Don’t Like To Think” now tho😂 this video is so funny to me
Next you should watch “The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals”
I genuinely thought this was a video about Guy who didn’t like musicals
I don’t like musicals either but the actors performances were so good and I also found out Ariana and Cynthia were actually singing live like the whole time which is crazy. I think what I realized is that a big draw to musicals is just the spectacle of people singing, dancing, and acting live. It’s hard to capture that spectacle in movie form hence why I would guess most movie musicals suck(the music is usually just bad too though), but this one seems to get it right. Also some people just aren’t impressed by that spectacle and only care about the story which I get and maybe you’ll never like a musical in that case
I didn't expect the Guy Who Doesn't Like Musicals to break out singing in the video. Lmao
That title was so wild out of context, I thought Charlie was a friend or fan of Team StarKid
"anytime a character experiences anything, it gets a balad" yes Charlie that is, in fact, what a musical is
Literally 😂
I’m laughing at the idea of Charlie’s lactose intolerance song being in an actual musical and ending with the character doing a massive fart
I legit thought he was going to say he watched the guy who doesn't like musicals, devastated by the truth
I think Charlie would like the guy who didn't like musicals
Charlie. I promise you, go see the second part when it comes out, and you will have the craziest amount of payoff for every "odd" moment in the show.
SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO DIDNT SEE THE MOVIE.
That “being brainless” song is really on par with the wizard of oz. I wonder what character this guy turns into… I probably would figure it out if I only had a brain 🤷♂️
4:36 he even rizzed up the librarian
