Hey Grant just a heads up, those wheels actually aren't heavy. They are only about 30-40 grams heavier than the RSL 37s, which come in at 1325 grams. So still an incredibly lightweight rim.
At this price point you might as well buy a Specialized SL8. If money was no option then use the Gen 7 for crits and lightning fast group rides. And buy a SL8 for those big days in the mountains. Now that would be the ultimate quiver. Unfortunately not enough folks are buying bikes as the marketplace is overly saturated from the pandemic.

As always, top tier review! I recently purchased the Domane SL 6 Gen 4 (red, blue, yellow colorway) and I really liked the bike. It's built more for endurance/compliance and that's the type of riding I do, and I like the 32mm tires. But generally, since it's an endurance bike, it performs well but doesn't really climb or accelerate like a performance bike. But there were problems with the seat post and Isospeed and it turned out the frame was bad. My local Trek shop had to warranty the frame. That's when I stumbled upon the new Gen 8 Madone. I really like the look of this bike and decided to test ride it. It was actually the SL6 Gen 8 that I test rode and WOW, it was amazing. It was fast, and nimble, and wanted to go even faster it seemed. A lot of Madone fans were arguing that the Gen 7 was still better and looked better. My shop also had an SL7 Gen 7 that I test rode and honestly, the SL6 Gen 8 felt better to me. Although I agree with most that the Gen 7 looks better. But I ended up exchanging my Domane for the Madone SLR 7 Gen 8, in the same colorway on your review. I like the smoke/matte black colorway also, but at this price point, I want the bike to be loud and noticeable. Because I'm still focused on comfort, I had the shop upgrade the tires from 28mm to 32mm. I don't mind the more aggressive position and geometry, I actually thought it felt better than my Domane. I never thought I'd pay $9K for a bicycle but it's also an investment in health and fitness. And being retired military, Trek has an awesome 10% military discount so kudos to Trek. Can't wait for it to arrive! Thanks again for your review!
why thank you so much!!! yea it honestly does make a big different for these top tier bikes and people who buy them always enjoy them, and usually have no regrets, the price is always going to be shell shock but its for your health
Yea makes no sense to me. The only thing I think of is the tested it with bottles there and that acted like fearings to close the frame gap to make it more aero
Pinarello is killing it imho with the new dogma, it's very much a climbing bike that has 90% aero shapes. these brands are just grasping at straws to stay relevant in a market that has self-corrected for the most part.
@@aloha_from_bradley i agree with the idea that one good bike is all you need, but the tarmac, this new madonne and the rest of the new "do it all" bikes are not very do it all. @@aloha_from_bradley I wouldn't put too much stock on self reported aero claims, especially from stationary wind tunnel data. Deeper chords and narrower tubes are always faster in real world. I do agree these are mostly minor differences, but for the money they want, I'd expect more benefits.
Honestly, unless your ride actually includes some super steep grades, stick with the Gen 7, the Venge, Ostro VAM, pure aero + inertia is better on shallow climbs IMO
That seatpost set at the very end of the top tube with no support looks like a catostrophic failure waiting to happen. I'm sure it's fine but the optics scare me.
Beware of those Pirelli P zero tires. Recently crashed with a front sidewall blowout at 90 psi.at 30 mph. I’m going back to Continental GP. after my wounds heal and fractured ribs mend. Don’t risk high pressure on the Italian tires.
Even if it's slower, how many people can actually test it in an unbiased and rigorous manner? It's all marketing. Aero has run its course, now they need to find another desirable object.
It's all in the bottles. Regular round bottles are a huge source of drag, so I can definitely see adding aero bottles to a decidedly less aero frame making the overall bike as aero as the Madone gen 7. The problem is, that comparison really isn't on a level playing field anymore. You could just as easily add those same bottles to the Madone gen 7 (or the Tarmac SL8, or the Venge, etc, etc) and see a similar boost in aero, which would once again put the Madone gen 8 back at the bottom of the pack in aero. It's all a spin on the data. I'm sure Trek has data collected from putting those same aero bottles on the Madone gen 7, and I'm also sure they're determined never to let it see the light of day.
I absolutely love my gen7 (I'm a heavier rider and no, the suspended seatpost has not cracked on me) and have no regrets about buying it even with this one coming out. However, that new design looks like a very cool bike indeed.
I'm incredibly happy with my Gen 7 Madone and see no reason to upgrade to the Gen 8. The irony is not lost as the Gen 7 Madone is equally as fast as the brand new Gen 8 Madone! However I'm still surprised they killed off the Emonda. What's new is the 900 OCLV carbon lay up. If Trek re-launched the Gen 3 Emonda in 900 OCLV with dropped seat stays, then WOW what a bike that would be! In sum, eliminating the Emonda and launching a new Gen 8 Madone (a gussied up Emonda) is really a cost cutting measure wrapped up in marketing jargon and hyperbole.
Dave Arthur's review had it weighing in at 7.35 KGs without pedals & bidons. I gather it's 700grms heavier than Emonda and not much of an advance on Gen 7 Madone.
I‘m so happy I bought a Gen 6 Madone. Don‘t like the new Trek models sadly. Would definitely buy a Canyon Aeroad if I had to choose from the current market.
its growing on me but i fear i am too fat for that seat post design. Also note: if you go with a higher seat post and smaller frame, the leverage forces are just that much more
I like the water bottles. I think all manufacturers are going to start doing that. Orbea has a version for theirs. It's got to make some difference. You can only make the frame so wide to help get air around those fat, round bottles. Overall looks better than last gen...although still not used to the ISO hole.
Hi GC performance. Great job on your video as always. Love the colour scheme. Would definitely want to slam the stem . Awesome super bike 🚴♂️👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nice bike. 320 grams lighter? No earth shattering. The bike looks good though. What is more important is how does it feel? Too stiff? Like a wet noodle? Just right?
@@GCPerformance18 Yes, in a reduction in the weight of the bike. However, in the big scheme it's better to look at the overall weight and see if losing weight on the rider is a better effort. I will give Trek kudos for trimming the Madone's weight though. I owned a series of them in the 2010s and they were great bikes and Trek has a fantastic warranty program.
"... changed the sizing to help out consumers." Suuure. THE biggest issue in S/M/L bike sizing is getting the right fit, as everyone knows. Also, if you're buying a ~$15K (or whatever) top end Madone, you know the size you want in cm, not some arbitrary categorization that was done to save Trek money regardless of what they claim. Might as well say it was done for our "safety" like most BS changes that manufacturers impose on us these days. I would never buy a Trek in the first place, but this soft of thing makes me even less well-disposed towards them.
To me the smallest and most insignificant changes are between the SL7 Gen 7&8. Pretty much the entire gen 8 bike is exactly the same and weighs only .28grams lighter. I prefer the more aggressive look of the gen 7. I would expect an immediate price drop of the gen 7 though given that both are currently the exact same price. Seat stays is a little thicker on Gen 7 but gen 8 does have a slightly more compliant stay (argumentative how much better it is). Aesthetically, the gen 8 color schemes are beautiful and imo, Trek has the best paint jobs in the industry.
Size Medium!!! So, I see Trek is also consolidating frame sizing as well. 🤨🤨🤨 Dare I say, but $13,5000 for a flagship Trek in the United States for the only big box real competition to Specialized is not bad.
Looks funny, manufacturers always making changes! The pricing doesn’t reflect it’s total manufacturing cost, if it was made in America completely than the price is justified!
Not loving the paint job... also I know a few heavy riders, one who cracked a frame by BB, and the other complained of flex. @GC why don't you test ride it and compare it stiffness with S works
Yea they really did. They could have done a better job like use the gen7 Madone front more carbon and deeper fork and then gen 8 Madone with skinny stays. Would look much better
All I heard was start buying gen 7 framesets. There's absolutely no way that thing is the same aerodynamically. Also the gen 7's compliance is so good that on 25c grand prix 5000's I'm always worrying that I've punctured a tube, then I realize it's just the isoflow doing its job. I can't tell the difference most days so when I get a flat it catches me by surprise.
Oh my scale is find and my bike building skills are even better. I have a full Weight weenies post with all my parts and their weights. Love my S5 btw.
I think the cost cutting comes from only offering one Racebike instead of two. The material cost is probably negligible. Also the market trend is obviously moving away from hardcore aero bikes
Love the new Madone except for the color options. A Trek bike should always have the viper red color option and matt black. IMHO the new color option just don't look cool. :(
I’m interested to see how the aero will test beyond trek’s own testing. As a person who works at a shop and has known about this bike for a while now and its weight I feel like, especially compared to the Tarmac, it should be lighter. Maybe aerodynamics are better, we’ll just have to wait
So it’s just as heavy as the old Edmonda, and potentially less aero than the old madone. Curious to see how it tests in Tour magazine. Do like the look though!
Jesus, it isn't even that light. RIP Madone SLR and Emonda. Also, the Gen 7 Madone SLR will remain the sexiest aero road bike ever made. This ain't it.
There’s only one, the ultimate race bike. 77 seconds faster per hour than the Emonda. 320 grams lighter than Madone Gen 7. New, top‑tier 900 Series OCLV Carbon and revolutionary aero tube shapes create a ridiculously light road race bike that floats up climbs. 80% more vertical compliance. Trek’s race‑focused IsoFlow compliance tech is lighter and more comfortable than ever, so you can soar smoothly past the competition. Build your dream bike exactly as you imagined it with a new Project One ICON paint scheme and the industry’s best components.
So it didn't take a full year for the competitors to get rid of the chunky bottom bracket area like Specialized initiated with the SL8 :D Canyons new Aeroad as well
Gen 7 looks better and it built with the new sram it will be way closer to the new ones weight. I’m on my 2nd gen 7. Sorry most of us bought the aero bikes for the look.
That handlebar is a head scratcher, everyone knows more bends equal more critical structure points for the carbon handlebars, now we have 4 more , looks like a coat hanger
This must be hands down the ugliest bike ever made. It blows my mind that anyone would spend any money on this monstrosity. Whoever designed this bike should be indicted.

Apart from paint and bottles, It's a perfect looking bike
so this all aero vs superlight was just a marketing trick to trick us into buying more bikes ??? I am SHOCKED
I mean 7.1-7.3kg is decent. I saw some channel weigh Tour de France bikes for this year and they are in the 7.0-7.6kg. range
Still enjoying my 2011 trek Madone 5.2 and it rides like new and lighter than this one.
madone
Awesome video,love the humour.Definitely get 3 fingers in there.😂
Glad you enjoyed
Um. It’s a pass for me. My 2024 Cervelo S5 weighs 6.5kg 😂. (No pedals // 52T 1x with cages , varia mount and Garmin mount.
You should calibrate your scale 🤣
Oh my scale is find and my bike building skills are even better. I have a full Weight weenies post with all my parts and their weights. Love my S5 btw.

Of course they are selling the lighter bikes less material = less cost per unit. They obviously have to adapt to the current economic conditions
I think the cost cutting comes from only offering one Racebike instead of two. The material cost is probably negligible. Also the market trend is obviously moving away from hardcore aero bikes
Nice bike but sorry its too heavy
those handle bars are so round wtf
better for climbing in the tops lol
Love the new Madone except for the color options. A Trek bike should always have the viper red color option and matt black. IMHO the new color option just don't look cool. :(
I’m interested to see how the aero will test beyond trek’s own testing. As a person who works at a shop and has known about this bike for a while now and its weight I feel like, especially compared to the Tarmac, it should be lighter. Maybe aerodynamics are better, we’ll just have to wait
Yea I have a feeling those numbers they have where with the water bottles in the wind tunnel
So it’s just as heavy as the old Edmonda, and potentially less aero than the old madone. Curious to see how it tests in Tour magazine. Do like the look though!
Based on the data on treks website its faster everywhere, especially with any type of grade other than zero.
@@86Digilio yeah I’m keen to see Tour Mag test it
We shall see
The water bottle cages accept aero bottles and round bottles
Nice thank you
idk, Light weight bikes are cool, but 15lbs? I'm afraid I'd destroy that thing. I'd like my bike to last longer than 2 years.
LOL the finger hole
lmaooo
Jesus, it isn't even that light. RIP Madone SLR and Emonda. Also, the Gen 7 Madone SLR will remain the sexiest aero road bike ever made. This ain't it.
I knowwww
So it didn't take a full year for the competitors to get rid of the chunky bottom bracket area like Specialized initiated with the SL8 :D Canyons new Aeroad as well
hahaha yea wild that they all followed suit
This is like windows 8 compared to windows 7 and no one wants to upgrade 💪
hahahahha
Stunning bike! Looks amazing in the carbon black colour.
Trek wanted to create new Madone, but made an Emonda. I like it though.
yea it looks way more like an emonda then a madone
still 7.5 kg with pedals.
No I’ve seen top specs build at 14pounds with pedals and bottle cages
@@realekmlightweight wheelset
The frame is 700 something grams. You can definitely make it lighter
@@diehardbikes medium is even 690g so imagine if you are riding XS or small.
Gen 7 came out not even 2 years ago and they already pushing it out smh it looks way better than this ugly thing
Yea they needed to make the front of the bike more aggressive. Just keep what the madone looked like
Awesome bike review! Love the Gen 8 changes too.
Right on!
These colors, somebody got paid for choosing them.
Looks like a children's toy and I can't unsee it 😢. The bottles are not helping one bit.
Imagine riding a bike with supermarket colors
All the compagnies do the same one bike for climb and flat road it'S perfect for the compagnies and for us now we i have to pay 😂
Yea way easier for distributors
Sure it’s fast than the Emonda but I just don’t believe it’s faster than Gen7
yea same here, I think alot of it has to do with the water bottle cages and bottles taking up a lot of the space in the inner triangle
Looks like Huffy designed it
lmao
Seen a $20500 trek bike on marketplace two years old struggling to fetch $9999 so... Hard pass!
This must be hands down the ugliest bike ever made. It blows my mind that anyone would spend any money on this monstrosity. Whoever designed this bike should be indicted.
Top specs build for this bike is 14pounds. Really light.
Is this not a top spec at 15 lbs?
@@terrellpickett7904 top spec is all about what you can add to the build to make it lighter.15pounds is good but 14 pounds is even better.
@@terrellpickett7904well sorry I meant custom build. You can still get it at 6.7-6.8 size medium in black frame.
Heavy fore size m
Emonda with madone seatpost
Even with massive butt hole at the rear still over 7kg lol 😂
yea, it needed to be under 7kg for there flagship bike and there competition is tough right now
And why would I ride around on a bike with a LIDL color scheme? Don´t like it all.
some people do
The Emonda is dead, long live the Gen8 Domane.
Too heavy for 2025
agreed, if this is highest price, bone stock it needs to come in under 7kg
Ha ha can’t even get hold of 2024 bikes and release a 2025
lmao they are hard to get a hold of becvuase new ones always being madee
@@GCPerformance18 I get that but don’t be asking for pre orders and then not delivering on them or pushing dates back to late August/September.
This is 3 different brands in the UK.
While excited cycling ur new Trex madone …. suddenly you wanna take a drink of water …. bottle got stuck …. u likely cause a minor accident
hahahha stuck in the hole
